I don't remember how old I was when I learned that there were other donut places out there besides Spudnuts. I'm born and raised in Berea, and Spudnuts was always a staple. In fact, one could argue that I am alive and on this planet because of Spudnuts - my parents met while working there in the 1960s/ 1970s - dad driving the delivery truck and mom working the counter. (Sadly this does honor and distinction does not get me or my brother a free donut on our birthday - it actually gets us nothing at all! But I digress.) Spudnuts are named such because they are made with potato flour. This makes a fluffy and soft donut. They are made fresh each day in the store. They have a wide variety - crullers, sour cream, cake, Boston creme, Apple fritters that are a family favorite, and hubby's favorite - maple bacon! The staff, mostly high school and college students, are friendly, upbeat, and efficient. The value is remarkable - about $1 a donut. They are open 7 days a week. When I got to Cleveland I always heard a talk about east side versus west side. There's really no competition, clearly west has better doughnuts (the only factor that matters for which is the better side) if not because of Spudnuts alone (but also Krispy Kreme and Beckers). And I've tried ones from all around east side, and downtown, but these are the best. By far. These are so good you'll always want to stop by if you're in the Berea-area and it makes me dangerously jealous of all those who live closer than me. I need to build my next house next to Spudnuts. The doughnuts are very light and fluffy and their sprinkles are very fresh and big and they put tons of them on there, not the measly dozen you'll find at a national coffee and doughtnut chain (BIG sprinkle fan). And about a dollar a piece. I'm not really sure how you can justify less than a five star review for this place unless you ping them for not being open 24/7. Which, I get. Always love these donuts! Fresh and so tasty. The butter pecan is delicious! Velvety cream filling-not too sweet balanced with the salty nutty goodness of toasted pecans. I still rate it rather high BUT be aware their prices have increased SIGNIFICANTLY in the last year. I stopped by today and learned an apple fritter is now $3.00 .... Just a plain old donut is now $2.00 & it was not THAT long ago they were $1.00 ........ $1.00 was probably not enough but to double the price is too much. There was not a single car in the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. & usually there are many customers. They commented their costs have increased. I grew up on Spudnut Donuts, to the point that I didn't realize until I was older how unique their potato flour based rings of ecstasy actually were. My favorite are the Reese's pieces topped donuts, because, well... Reese's. Unfortunately, they only have those occasionally so I took off 1/2 a star. I feel as if humanity deserves Reese's donuts on a daily basis, not just 1-2 times per week. The other 1/2 star deduction comes from their "new" boxes. I miss the old square bakery boxes that they used for decades. The new flat rectangular boxes are just like every other run-of-the-mill donut chain. The plastic on the top sticks to the donuts, too. I grew up in Berea and yet somehow had never had doughnuts from Spudnuts until this week. That was dumb. I brought home a dozen for the house to share and by the next morning there were only two left. I'm a little embarrassed by the number I ate all by myself, but let's not linger on that topic and move on to the yummy details, shall we? The doughnuts were delicious. The old fashioned was crisp on the outside and dense inside while still retaining its lightness. The Boston cream style had a great chocolate flavor and the perfect amount of filling. We were in the area and decided to stop at this place for the 2nd time. I've heard good things about them. The last time we stopped the staff was friendly and the donuts were good. This time I was a little disappointed. The staff was a little sassy and short in their responses. I asked about the maple cream donut; I asked if it was like a cream stick, only round. "It is whatever it says it is." I asked if that meant that it was maple icing with vanilla cream. She said "It's maple cream filling" and her tone was cool and very short; as if she were annoyed. I then spotted the ones that said "cream" and asked for 2 cream donuts with maple icing. She packaged them and gave me my total. I did not feel welcome. I felt like I was bothering her by making a purchase. My husband and I both liked the taste and freshness of the donuts, but there was very little cream inside. A coworker had brought Spudnuts into work before and they were good. So, I was in the area and decided to give them a try. They are pretty good, they are a nice sized doughnut. Bigger than DD or Krispy Kreme. Like most shops, they sell out of doughnuts during the day and do not make more. I would get there early to get the kind that you want. I got the custard and chocolate cream filled doughnut. They did not have a ton of filling which was disappointing but still good. I would recommend stopping in if you are in the area but not worth driving out of your way for them. I would go back again if I was in the area. read more

After much talk on this little shop in Berea from my neighbor, I decided Sunday was a great day for a Spudnut. I walked in and was greeted by a nice young woman behind the counter. "What can I getchya?" "Two dozen spudnuts", I reply. Then came the choosing. Oh, such difficult decisions prior to coffee in the morning. From apple fritters, to glazed, to apricot filled, to Boston cream (YUM!), to coconut, to sourdough, to French crullers, and the list goes on & on. Did I neglect to say that all spudnuts are the same cost. Yeppers, there's no additional for the fancy-pants sprinkle donuts that I'm a sucker for. I had her load up the boxes & on to church choir for the real test. Hungary early morning musicians in need of a sugar-rush. Scene: Two very full boxes of Spudnuts sitting on the organ bench. In walk choir members. Eyes grow large. Smiles begin to form. "What is this?" they ask hopefully. "Just a little spudnut treat for this blustery morning", said I.
