The best part about this place is the karaoke. Food is overpriced and not very good. Drinks were alright. But they have some killer singers show up on the weekends for karaoke. Cool vibe, but a small place. If you go with a group of friends good luck finding seating. We have 4 people on a Friday night around 6:30-7 and had to sit on these high bar stools the whole nice. I was really excited to try this place and very disapointed when I finally did. The food tasted like it was fried in 4 day old oil, and it took 30 minutes to get when it was just appetizers. My beer, that was in a bottle, was flat and the waitresses were too busy taking smoke breaks to even check to see if we needed refills. My girlfriend and I came because we wanted somewhere close to home (Auburn) and we had an entertainment coupon, LOL. We headed down to the family dining area...it was freezing and smelled weird. The menus were sticky. I tried to be patient. There were only a couple of tables. The waiter was cool and said they were re-modeling. It looked like Hurricane Sandy had blown through. We decided to move upstairs which was a little better. Lots of regulars. Menus still sticky. Juke box music, video game thing at the bar. Girlfriend had the special and it was ok, i had the fettuccine it was ok. It's just kind of run down I guess. The staff is cool. Apparently the singing is fun on weekends. We won't be back, but I guess you have to experience it if you live in Auburn. read more

My husband and I moved to Auburn less than a year ago and have been to the Spunky Monkey twice. Once for dinner in the downstairs area and once for drinks and entertainment at the bar. Both times were enjoyable for many reasons. Dinner was somewhat private, not crowded, good food and the staff was great. I especially enjoy the peanut butter smoothie/shake. Upstairs for drinks I would say the specialty drinks taste pretty good, a little on the sweet side and pretty spendy. But we enjoyed a few of them nonetheless. Save the hate, this place exists for the guy drinking a pitcher by himself at the corner table and the girl at the bar fixed on her phone drinking long islands for 2 hours. Karaoke 7 days a week? We decided to try out the restaurant after hearing it was on Restaurant Impossible. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. The menu is very simple-- burgers, soup, salad, and two kinds of pasta. If you are going to only offer a few items, those items are expected to be really good. A small burger and 4 jojo's in a tiny grungy building did not constitute an $11 burger. This was our first time in the place although we have lived in the area for years. The inside of the building was nice but there is no way that with no curb appeal they are going to be able to attrack the kind of patrons that their prices and atmosphere desire. Our meal was disrupted by loud visitors who were visibly drunk upon arrival to the bar. I don't predict success and we will not be back. read more

WOW - pleasantly surprised. Have had this place bookmarked ever since it was on Restaurant Impossible. Having lived in this area all my life, I've never gone here (or had the desire to). Took daughter #1 on a Saturday night at 10pm - the bar was packed - we went downstairs to the basement restaurant and it was completely empty - asked the chef if they were open and he said yes and sent a server over. The place is really cute (RI did a good job giving it a face lift). The chef turned it our server since upstairs was super busy (loved the karaoke choices - had me and Sissy laughing the entire time....). I had the Monkey See,Monkey Do to drink and it was really good (didn't lack alcohol and was $8). To eat I had the black & blue burger and Sissy had the onion burger - they were delicious!! on toasted brioche buns with perfectly medium rare patties and excellent condiments. There were only 5 JoJo's but they were big and turned out to be the right amount and were delicious - $11 was a more than fair price. Chef said we should try the cesear salad and brought us out a small plate to share - it was AWESOME - it has there secret dressing that only the owner knows the recipe to (it is very garlicky - which I loved). Am definitely coming back for lunch and having a cesear salad sooner than later. We ended the meal with the banana bread pudding (and got one to go). This is the one item I thought was overpriced ($7 each) and wasn't very good but daughter loved it. We will definitely be coming back here. They're embracing the bar concept. Rot has it the Restaurant Impossible make over out them in more debt than ever. They are now a hard core Karaoke Bar almost every night. They are doing okay for what they are, but they're definitely suffering from an identity crisis. And the owners are absentee again. This place could make it as a bar, but only with owners who are " All In" and know what they are doing. Someone with deep pockets and a vision needs to buy this place really bad. read more

Ordered a plate of their special Screamin pasta for $10. It was bland and oily. The serving was small and when I commented on it, the wait person said they measure it all out by weight. That doesn't really explain why the serving was so small. Ordered an ice cream dessert that was supposed to be a take-off on the old fashioned banana split. They held the bananas on the side by our request. The rest was boring. $7 for that? the two cocktails we ordered were almost devoid of alcohol. We could barely taste it. WOW! Wasn't really sure what we'd be walking in to. Maybe a Tiki bar? Dive bar? Either was fine with us! IT WASN'T EITHER! It is a cute, clean, small bar and grill. The Bartender/Wait Staff was amazing! We're sure she has super powers. She waited on all the people in the room (25?). We ordered another beer. She had it to our table before she even had time to walk back to the bar. It was a bit freaky! The atmosphere was reminiscent of a place say downtown Chicago or Birmingham! Everyone was so nice. NOW to the HIT of the evening.....we were expecting bar food. Boy were we wrong!!! OMG the food was spectacular! My friend had the flatiron steak and loaded potato. He ordered the steak medium. I went here the other night for karaoke. This bar was really fun. The Karaoke DJ was so nice and so were the bartenders. I had such a good time and I loved that everyone seemed to be comfortable with singing and enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was so friendly and welcoming. 2 stars because I have experienced better, however I did have a good time with the people I came with. The karaokee was interesting...as it always is at karaokee bars ha ha ha. I do like the new remodel, its nice. Service was just a little slow, it was pretty busy so I can understand that. This night they ran out of Fireball and Jager, which are pretty popular drinks these days you'd think a bar would stay well stocked in this area. Had they not run out of Fireball I probably would have stayed until closing what can I say...thats my drink of choice...with Jager being a second ha ha ha. I have been an Auburn resident my whole life. I always drove past and wondered. So about 2 years ago I went with my g/f on a Friday night for a bite and a couple of drinks. It was ok, but a couple rude people turned us away. But the place seemed ok. Then we heard about the food network's remodel and decided to go back on a Thursday for karaoke. We found the place fairly crowded, prices were higher, pool tables were gone and it just had a weird vibe of trying to be all Artsy Fartsy, but failed. So when we heard they had changed it back to closer than before the remodel and was doing karaoke 7 nights a week, we decided to try one more time, since we do live very close. That was their third strike. It was awful, and we will never go back. More rude people. A deaf guy who the wait staff said was a regular, and "Don't mind him" wouldn't keep his hands off my g/f while she was singing. I ordered the cheesy garlic fries and what a mistake. How does someone screw up fries? The fries themselves were ok, but crazy small portion for $6, but they were cold, covered in raw cold cheese and RAW chopped garlic. Not even from a jar. I'm talking RAW! sitting on cold grated cheese and cold fries. Garlic needs to be cooked a bit to start the caramelizing process, and the cheese should be melted. Or at least be put on hot fries that kinda melt it. At least warm it? Raw garlic has a way of turning your mouth numb like you just ate something poisonous. 24 hours later and several tooth and tongue brushings my mouth still wasn't right. And as the designated driver I only ordered a diet cola. It was dark, and it had fizz, but something wasn't right? I drank it, but when I went back to the bar for a refill after getting tired of waiting for the waitress, I mentioned it to the bartender in a very polite, constructive way. I asked if she had changed the syrup or CO2 tank in the last half hour? And she said no. I then let her know, something was off. Not terrible, but not right? She then informed me that instead of buying Coke or Pepsi products, they buy RC cola. How much money do they save by buying a cheaper brand of cola? I can't imagine ordering a rum and coke and getting RC cola? read more

Hadn't been to the monkey since the remodel and we loved it. We wanted a quiet Valentine's Day dinner and got it. The restaurant downstairs was not overly packed. The hummus appetizer is flavorful. I had the Spunky Monkey Pasta with shrimp - it had just the right amount of veggies and was delicious. Our server was nice and attentive but didn't hover. The Spunky Monkey has really made some improvements. I was there before the remodel and it was so bad we literally walked out the door and didn't stay to eat. I made a reservation almost a month in advance for my boyfriends birthday. I asked several questions about whether or not I could bring food, decorations, if I'd need to put down a fee to reserve the downstairs area for the party. They okayed everything except (obviously) bringing your own alcohol. My friend and I show up the day of, set everything up, a few guests show up early, and then a bunch of random people come in and start playing pool and they serve them drinks and food. We are confused about why people are being served in an area we'd reserved and then the owner comes down and tells us that none of this is approved. She made one of the guests feel uncomfortable by trying to imply some kind of blame on her. Then she says something about a fee for bringing the food. I tell her I made this reservation three weeks ago and she says she needs 15 minutes to figure out what to do. When she comes back she pulls me aside and in summary calls me a liar; that there was a reservation but no one told me that I could bring food besides a cake, that I didnt give her the right head count and that as long as I don't remember who I spoke to on the phone, there's nothing she can do about that. So she can either charge me $2,000 for the fee that should could get for having food there or I have to get rid of all of it. Now, I Ubered there and we didn't have anywhere to just store all of this food that was supposed to feed about twenty people. So we end up packing everything up and putting it all in a friend's trunk. They gave us free shots. Lol. Which was nice, but didn't really make up for the time and money several people put into planning the event. I run a business myself, I understand the concern the owner had because she was not licensed or certified to patron the party we had intended. I get it. But as a business owner I would never have dealt with things the way she had. There is no circumstance in which you should find it acceptable to take out your frustration on a customer. I don't care whether or not you believe they're lying about a situation. You act apologetic and you inform your staff to prevent the incident from occurring again. That's how you keep business. You don't alienate someone that was willing to give you thier hard earned money and especially not the guests that had absolutely nothing to do with the situation. You lost several returning customers as a result. read more

The place is awesome on your way to a concert at white river. Servers are fast and friendly with the cold drinks and hot food. Have yet to have something that isn't excellent. Their calamari is made from the steak and not rings and tentacles which makes it so tender, as soon as I saw it on the menu I had to try it. Delish!!!! Burgers rock and the salads are huge. This time we had all pre funk for the concert which was mac and cheese triangles, calamari, kalbi steak bite and fried zucchini everything was awesome. read more

I have never had a bartender be this rude to me, I came in for happy hour at 5 30 to a nearempty bar and was told to wait while three bartenders where just chatting for about five minutes, I ordered a drink and played a few rounds of darts, when I wen to pay I was overcharged, and when I corrected the bartender I was told I was lying because she got there at 6 and I had to prove I was here before 6 because I used my phone to check in at 5 30 and she said they have no happy hour prices for imports , I had to show her the menu. she ended up cursing at me and throwinf a wrinkled dollar at me... that still didnt cover the prices. it not about the 50 cents I was shorted, I just cant recomend a place where the bartender calls you the f word when she is wrong. aside from that they have some ok dartboards. read more

Great food! Friendly staff with awesome service! However, if you want to Karaoke here...don't bother if you're not a regular. They add your name to the list, then push you towards the bottom throughout the night to add their regulars first. Super disappointing! This is not the first time this has happened to us. Maybe they should do the old "first come, first serve" process. Sitting here for 2 hours and 21 min still waiting to sing.
