The noodles were crispy and fresh. Eggplant was spicy but not too spicy in fact it was very crispy and pretty ok and I take dumplings very serious and lemme say they're good but a bit salty and soft. This was relatively satisfying experience a bit on the expensive side but the staff are incredibly nice always checking on us to see if we needed anything else or wanted for food and tea. Came in a cold dark Sunday evening. I was walking around Forest Hills and didn't know what to eat. For once, I didn't have any cravings except hunger. After walking around for 30 minutes...looking at chicken - American, Korean; burgers -premium, non-premium; sushi; and ramen nothing was appealing to me. After asking if the restaurant accepts credit card, they said yes. If they didn't, I would have had to find a bank and probably left since I didn't want to walk anymore. They gave me a cold glass of water, which I quickly drank since I didn't know I was dehydrated. She refilled my glass while I perused the menu. Thank you so much! Finally saw beef and tomato broth which would be great for a cold day. Ordered and it came very quickly. This hit the spot without me knowing that this is what I wanted. I was in the neighborhood and decided to try this restaurant, which used to be on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Since I was dining solo, I just ordered their infamous soup dumplings. I had mixed feelings about their soup dumplings. The dough was thicker than the ones I had at Shanghai Zhen Gong Fu, and even Nan Xiang Long Bao or Kung Fu Xiao Long Bao. The flavors were well balanced, but there was not enough soup as I was accustomed to at the three places mentioned above. Service was rushed, and the staff was too eager to take my order. The ambiance of the place has a local vibe and appearance of being in the neighborhood for so many years. don't recommend this place at all. all the dishes were super salty and unsophisticated in flavor. the mapo tofu was laughable. the restaurant is super small, bathroom needs lots of work and looks like it hasn't been cleaned in ages, and all the chairs are metal and uncomfortable. they don't have any tables for parties over 6. the hallway in the back to the bathroom is really small, dark, and jank. what's the worst part is that one of the staff came to complain about a 10% tip, nickel and diming our party even though the food was lousy and the service was average at best. the lunch special looks good if you get one thing but i would not come back again. it's worth making the trip out a stones throw nearby to flushing for any medicore restauarant. would be better than our meal here. read more

I have never noticed this Chinese restaurant on Austin street until recently. So I swing by for lunch on a summer Thursday afternoon. Have to say it's a nice place to sit down and have a nice meal. For appetizers; I had the vegetable rolls that were super yummy. And for the main entree I had some delicious chicken lomein. Overall the food was super delicious and was served quickly. My lunch was delightful. The services were quick and pleasant. They had a lunch special as well. Overall the prices were affordable. I noticed a lot of folks did take out as well. The food arrives to the apartment in Forest Hills, and we go in!! We love variety but also love things that are consistently delicious and perfect every single time. Those items are: Scallion Pancakes, Chicken Lo Mein, and Crispy Sesame Beef. The scallion pancake is so thin, so light, free from being doused in oil, and full of bright scallion flavor. The chicken lo mein is the freshest tasting one with such high quality ingredients, and also lacking any mushiness in the lo mein and completely free of any oil. SPY C currently has a rating below 4.5, which is kind of like saying Galileo was rated poorly for astronomy in his time. The dry pot is exemplary: I add lotus roots, tofu skin, eggplant and other vegetables. The mortar crushed eggplant is one of my favorite dishes I've ever had in the neighborhood. I really think this is the best restaurant in forest hills. It's probably the main restaurant that I feel is "of note" in a culinary sense, one you'd introduce to someone who was really into food and wanted something different. This place honestly deserves 5 stars for the amazing and flavorful food, but I did not want to still point out that when we first sat down there was a very strong cigarette smell and honestly we were about to get up and leave right there but something told me to stick it out because the food would be worth it. Fortunately the odor did go away and our food came out so fast. Hands down one of the best hot and sour soups I've ever had! We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, and they were soo good. The garlic sauce beef and orange chicken were also a strong hit. The orange chicken was probably also one of the best I've had. I loved how crispy it was and the sauce was delicious. I'm still thinking about it all and would go back tomorrow if I could. I took vegetable fried rice to go for my boyfriend so I got to try it and we were also able to warm it up the next day to have for lunch and it was delicious. Now as I said not your average takeout spot because it is a bit on the pricier side. For everything, it was a total of about $70. I think this place was probably great when it first opened, but I have to believe that the original chef is gone. A few months back, I ordered scallion pancakes and a chicken dish - I think chicken in black bean sauce. The scallion pancakes came without any sauce to dip them into and they were quite greasy. The chicken dish came with tiny flat thin pieces of chicken that tasted undercooked to me. I had them throw it back in the wok to cook it more and when it came out, it still tasted really weird - the texture was horrible as if it was only fat or something. I could not eat it. I had them pack it up to go, but I tossed it in the trash. I don't know how you can blow a chicken dish. The ambiance is fine if you sit in the front, but in the back is a long narrow hallway and it's not very nice back there. Disappointing because I would love this place to be great. Forest Hills needs a great Chinese restaurant that's better than a typical takeout place. read more

I was getting tired of the standard Chinese fare when I discovered Spy C on Austin street. They have an interesting and varied menu. My favorite so far is the fish with basil. It is flavorful and delicious. The staff was very helpful as I was not familiar with this style of Chinese cooking. So far I have enjoyed each dish I've tried. Came here for dinner. I was hesitant to come because I thought everything was going to be spicy, but there is definitely a mix of different types of food and options here. Anything can be adjusted to whatever a range of spicy you would like. We tried dry pepper fish which was super spicy, but delicious. We also tried to the dan dan noodles. It was a little bit on the smaller side, but tasted pretty good still. We also got the scallion pancakes with beef which were also really good. They also have a few alcohol options like beer and wine for pretty cheap. A carafe of sake is $8 here. The also have a beer happy hour that's not easy to make (believe it ends at 6) with $3 beers, but the rest of the stuff is still reasonably priced without the happy hour. The service here was really good, and they were super friendly. It was a bit empty when we went to the vibes were chill but still nice. Overall, a pretty cool place. Food was excellent, service was even better. I've been meaning to try this place for some time but always ended up opting for ramen, this time I made sure to give them a shot and wasn't disappointed. It's not much looking from the outside, however the quaint decor on the inside is pretty chic with hand drawn murals on the walls, nice ambient lighting and ample seating space. Upon walking in to the restaurant I was greeted and offered a seat where ever I wanted. The server brought over some menus and a glass of water and offered to take my drink order. I saw a separate drink menu on the table and opted for a Sapporo. It's mostly a wine and beer establishment and they don't have any draft beers. After looking at the menu I opted for my usual favorite which is a spicy dry hot pot. Basically, meats and vegetables cooked in chili oil with both chili peppers and Sichuan chili peppercorns. The resulting combination of both hot spice and numbing spice known as Sichuan cuisine. The meal was excellent, food was well prepared. For the hot pot, each item ranged from $5 - $6.50 and for one person they recommend between 4-6 items. I picked five, but try didn't have the tofu skins so naturally I wasn't charged for it. My one gripe is that prices were a bit on the high side for the portion and being charged for rice at a Chinese food place doesn't seem to sit well with me. Overall I spent a bit over $40 for the meal and a beer. I took about half home with me in their provided containers. In summary, I would likely come back to try more of the menu and provide further updates, of the items I tried so far, it was on par with other establishments that I've ordered from before and others were offering more items in the hot pot for cheaper and including the rice. Still, I'm happy I came in and decided it was worth it to try them out. read more

Mouth-watering, delicious goodness in my mouth. The fish pieces were tender and perfectly cooked. The spice level is tolerable considering I cannot handle spice well. The tofu was soft and bouncy. Let me preface this by stating that as a true foodie I don't mind spending money on quality food. Spy C Cuisine missed its mark by a long shot. We were truly baffled by the incredibly small takeout portions that we received. Luckily I ordered food from another restaurant to add to our dinner. My hunny picked out the items he wanted us to try. I ordered Beef Garlic Sauce Style, General Tso's Chicken, Beef In Pancakes, and two orders of White Rice. I couldn't help but instantly become angry when I looked at the tiny laughable take out portions. The food we received was definitely not enough for two people or to have leftovers for the next day. The beef garlic sauce style was tasty but needed more beef. The general tso's chicken tasted like orange chicken (not a fan), and the beef in pancakes was too oily. We've definitely had better. We only received one order of white rice instead of two. Oh and I was charged for each rice. I used my 50% discount via UberEats which brought the total of our meal to $45.35. This is hands down, the BEST Chinese food place in all of Forest Hills. We were thrilled to discover! My favorite dish is the eggplant with brown sauce. We also love their scallion pancakes. I love to order their egg drop soup and my husband is a big fan of their hot and sour soup. My husband has tried a few of their dishes and of course I take a bite. I am loyal to the eggplant in brown sauce dish as it is the best I have ever had and that is my favorite Chinese food dish.
