You get lots of food here. I ordered the gyro's dinner: rice, 1 pita, mini salad and like 6 lbs of shaved gyro meat. So if you're a doomsday prepper, just order the dinner plate and I'm sure you can ration it to last a few decades. The reason for the 3 stars is the quality portion then. It's not bad, it just wasn't on par with some of the other Greek restaurants in the area, like Yorkies. I feel like it was just a lot of salty meat. The first few bites were great, but by the 4th and 5th bite, it really caught up to me. I also like it when they grill the meat for a quick char after carving it off the rotating spit. Well hell, this is Chicago Greek food on steroids and it totally rocks. Staff reminded me of the family neighborhood gyros places of times past. Old school gyros where they pay attention to the details, e,g. Crispy gyros meat, hot French fries, tzatziki with that hint of garlic (and mint maybe) and a Greek salad that will blow your mind (large chunks of feta, kalamata olives, cold fresh lettuce and an incredible Greek vinaigrette dressing). This place has been open at least 30 yrs and I can see why. They have the most amazing broasted and Greek chicken. Along with the best Greek potatoes ive ever had. The woman working the front is SO nice she gave us free Greek potatoes last time to try so if we liked them we can get them next time... Oh and did we its a pretty big place and very clean, there has been someone cleaning up every time we have been there , bathrooms too ! They make their hummus fresh and the rice pilaf is delicious as well. We are ordering chicken from them Christmas Eve. There isnt anything bad I can say about the place. So, I've been craving a gyro since last week when I had the horrible encounter with the worst kind. I convinced my peeps to go today for lunch. Yeah, I had the gyro with tomato, onions and lots of tsatziki!!!! It was yummy!!!! The fries were a little over done but I think it was just a fluke. I've had food there before, the souvlaki and burgers and they're great! My friends had a salad with chicken breast, souvlaki plate (the rice looked so good and it smelled like heaven!) and fish sandwich. No complaints and no left overs. That means good food! We're at a hotel nearby and stopped for dinner. I ordered the chopped steak plate with the rice and lettuce and tomato. Also ordered was a side of Greek potatoes. The potatoes were fabulous - flavourful, soft and filling; the steak was cooked well and not chewy at all. The rice was great too - plenty of flavour without being overwhelming as some pilafs can be. We haven't lived in northlake for a long time and we were in town for a wake. We probably haven't been in squabs for 30 years but it was just as good as before. I had Broasted chicken. It was terrific and large pieces. My husband had a combo. He said the sausage was on the spicy side just the way he likes it. We both have enough for another meal. If you live and/or work in the area, chances are you've hit Squabs up for lunch on several occasions in your electrifying and tantalizing life. Over the years, they've changed owners, remodeled, and expanded the menu a bit by serving broasted chicken and much more Grecian food. In my world, Squabs is a pretty good lunch spot, and not much more. There's no denying they make a damn good gyro. Plenty of meat, onions, and tzkasaksiski sauce (I don't know what it's called exactly, so I typed random letters. You know what I'm talking about though). But just a little bit of tomato, because God forbid, you don't want TOO much of something healthy to ruin your day. I also like their burgers and polish sausages. Another plus is they send coupons in the mail for some good meal deals. Very convenient in these times with the economy... (oh god I'm doing it again!). For example today they had $1.99 gyros. Thus by 11am, the lunch crowd started pouring in. But even though it was getting crowded, I still got my food faster than Burger King most times. "A-OK" sums up Squabs perfectly. Unless you're really into the Greek cuisine (which I'm not), there's nothing breathtaking about the food that has me dining here any more than once every couple months. Promising reviews, but a huge letdown. We found ourselves in the area on our way to watch the Chicago Bandits. The wife vetoing KFC, a quick yelp search pointed to this place. Given the high marks and the usual ability of most places to knock out quick eat meals; it seemed like a good spot. Meal 1: Chk Kabob Plate - No flavor on the chicken. I walked up and asked for some bbq sauce and was told its 50 cents; but she will let it slide this time. Hmm, as my entrée came with NO sauce, not even the typical tzaziki, I have to pay for sauce? How about I pump a gallon of ketchup from the container unto my tray and exchange that for a small container of sauce? All sauce comments aside, for a place that is supposed to do chicken right: did not deliver! Meal 2: Beef - dry and flavorless Meal 3: My son wanted the kid meal hot dog, but with chili. He was told that it was not an option. So he ended up getting two chili dogs and one fry: $8.70. Chili tasted from a can. Meal 4: Mostaccoli -well that one is really tough to screw up; unless you count the bread served with it being burnt and hard as a rock. Squabs is not my ideal kind of healthy lunch. It is close to my work and my gosh, everything is so tasty sometimes I ignore the number of calories in my mind and just dive into the food. I talked about Squabs with a few guys who have been eating in there. I could see their eyes light up and almost drooling when they talked how much they loved the food. Gyro salad is my favorite. Food's still good, but I've gotta ding them a star for surly staff and a laughably small restroom. I like to give Squab my lunch business every month or so (being that it's close to where I work); I'm a fan of the atrium-like dining area and their vast menu. The gyros plate, broasted chicken, and a couple other things are great, but the Italian beef wasn't super and the cheeseburger was uninspired. Excellent fries, though. And bottles of Trappey's Louisiana hot sauce is nice to see. On more than a couple visits, the fountain drink dispenser has been out of at least 1 type of pop, despite the fact that they feature red creme soda (!!), a rarity 'round these parts. Baklava (is it homemade?) is expensive, a triangle costs $3. Their listing of dessert states "when available", which is a necessary disclaimer since the lower half of items had the word -OUT- next to them. Bummer. Bread = 4 Circuses = 3.5 I've noticed the staff getting progressively grumpier. The smiles of the people at the register have faded considerably since my inaugural lunch outing (or is it just my imagination.....) And when I went to the men's room to rinse the germs of engineering off of my hands, I felt like Mr Incredible wedged into his Fiat-sized family car. Someone washing their hands at the sink will get clipped/hit outright by the opening bathroom door. Someone drying their hands stands directly in the way of whomever tries to use the stall. So, ballpark estimate, Squab's men's room has a maximum occupancy of 1 midget + a small puppy. I used to come here every other week, but that's gone down in frequency to every other month. I really enjoyed the food!!!! We ordered a pork Kabob, baked chicken quarter dinner that comes with rice, salad, and garlic bread & a gyro w/fries. Cashier was an older friendly lady who greeted and assisted us promptly. It took abt 10mins to prepare our order. We dined in & sat at a booth. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUSLY!!!!! So I've been to Squabs many times and just like some of the reviews I read from a year ago the food is WAY TOO SALTY!!!!!! The gyro meat you are purchasing, have that recipe redone because apparently nobody tastes what they are buying. Too salty!!!! Tonight I ordered 2 gyros sandwiches and roasted potatoes and ate a good portion of the meat and complained the whole time how salty it was then I complained that the tzaziki sauce was way too garlicky couldn't even taste cucumber. Then I pay 4.50 for roasted Greek potatoes and out of the 5 piece I couldn't even eat one and neither could my mother. I spent a total of 28 bucks and majority of that food went into the trash. Seriously quality control is needed in your kitchen. If you're related to the squabs in the city, they'd never do this to their food. For the amount of money people are paying for food now, at least have the quality to stand by it. I understand there could be short staffed ness out there and maybe things done in a hurry but don't damage your reputation by other cooks in the kitchen. Broasted chicken was very good, barbecue sauce was very good. Coleslaw was creamy but not a lot of flavor. Cheeseburger and Italian beef very good. Kids enjoyed their chicken tenders. However I was very disappointed when picking up my order to see two gentlemen walk in there WITHOUT MASK and being waited and and talking to what I think might have been the owner. Very disappointed after ordering $70 of carry out food and restaurant was not enforcing mask mandate to friends of restaurant and protecting their other customers. Your pita bread is going down in quality. It used to be soft texture and flexible. Now is hard and very difficult to brake. Also, gyros used to be the best in town, not anymore! As a new employee in Melrose Park I have been looking for a great places to eat during lunch. One of my coworkers Recommended that I eat at this establishment. Even though this place is known for gyros, I was told that the broasted chicken was to die for. The meal that I got was a two piece chicken, cole slaw, garlic bread, and french fries. All of this was for under eight dollars. The price point is absolutely amazingAnd the taste of the chicken reminded me of how chicken should be made. The flavor in the chicken breast you can tell that this place took a lot of pride in putting flavor into their chicken. I have eaten at this place twice and I've gotten the same meal both times.
