Five stars purely for customer service!! It's hard to find shops that are willing to work with you in special situations, and Square Deal definitely surprised me. I took in my 2000 VW Beetle with my brake and check engine lights on, and my car had been riding rough and pulling to one side. I had major work done on my turning arms and alignment from a shop in socal less than six months ago.. Turns out my turning arms were completely loose, wheels flopping about, and I needed an entirely new subframe. Though I declined to get work done (not because of this shop, but because I had already invested far too much into this beetle than the car is worth), the wonderful guys at Square Deal cut me a deal for diagnostics and labor, as well as let me store my car at their shop fee free until I could work out a dispatcher to come tow the car. I called around 2:00 PM on a Monday inquiring if they had any smog check appointments available. They said come on in at 3:30. I spoke with Brian and he quoted me about 30 minutes for the check. He was spot on. He called me 30 minutes later and I was out the door. Brian is a very nice gentleman and I would recommend using Square Deal if you have to get your car smog checked. read more

My boyfriend needed typical maintenance on his truck and called in advance to schedule a appt, get an idea on pricing, and provide the list of items he needed: alignment, oil change, tire rotation, fluids check, and brake check. I took it in for him and Bong was approachable and professional. He reviewed what we wanted to be done and pricing. About two hours later Brian called me back. He explained that they didnt need to complete half of what we asked for because the truck was in good top condition. No alignment needed, the brakes were great, and some extras that they checked were good so they took the fee off the bill. The price I was originally quoted went down by more than half. When you don't know much about cars, it's hard to find a garage that you can trust. Seems like everyone is trying to pull a fast one and charge you for things you don't need. This isn't the case with Square Deal. I have been told not to fix things more times than I have been told to fix them, simply because it wasn't needed at that time. Brain has the best service anywhere. I don't wish car trouble on anyone, but it's nice to have a place you can trust when problems come up. read more

I recommend this repair shop because it has A LOT of restaurants to choose from VERY close by. Mexican food Coffee shop and Hot dog spot. Plus a couple bars as well if that's your thing. This is by far the worst mechanic shop that I've been to. Not only are they sleezy but they defend their shady business practices of not actively disclosing (or looking for) whats wrong with your vehicle. I took my Honda over there and asked for an oil change plus diagnostic on the engine i.e. what the industry calls (preventative maintenance). They did the oil change and ignored the preventative maintenance (PM). I tried talking to the older asian guy behind the desk about what were the result of the PM and he said "What do you want me to do". I responded by saying "Does the car need anything else besides the oil change?". His english was really poor so he felt threatened and said bring back the car when it breaks down. I tried to simplify the conversation and asked him - "does the car need new belts or spark plugs?". He started to get angry and his body language was defensive. I took the car to the Honda dealership and they found a litany of issues with the car. That evening, I reflected on my naiveness by trusting my Honda with this garage for 2 years in the name of supporting small local businesses. I realized that this particular garage cannot be trusted. It is much more expensive to ignore problems with your vehicle (allow these issues to pile up) and then pay for a tow plus replacement of parts as opposed to just doing the preventative maintenance in the first place. Apparently if you have a car that you don't care about, just want oil changes and are happy paying the extra cost of tow + repairs after an engine malfunction occurs - then Square Deal is the perfect place for that. On the other hand, if you would want to be informed about issues with your engine and want a professional mechanic recommend maintenance items to your engine so that you are not on the side of the road, then DO NOT goto Square Deal. read more

Just had my smog check done here, and they were terrific. Although the garage was clearly busy, they were able to finish my check within an half an hour, over lunch. Officially saying don't go here. Found out today they misdiagnosed something on my car as well. I've been to them a few times and the theme seems to be recommend pricey work you don't need and while doing that they may actually fix the smaller problem too. Not good. read more

I've been taking our two cars to Square Deal for years now, and they've proven themselves extremely capable and honest time after time. When I had self-diagnosed a pretty expensive electrical problem them discovered a simple part change that fixed solved the problem. When other shops (visited because I needed Star Smog, etc), told me I needed expensive repairs I took that report to the Square Deal guys to get the work done and they told me that I did not need the repairs. They've never been late. They've never been wrong. They've always been helpful. It's also really nice to have a good shop in walking distance of home! read more

After getting incompetent service from 2 other local garages ($2K)since Oct. and my poor Trooper still suffering and tormented with a screaming alternator, jerky tranny and disasterous gas milage we limped, sputtered and rolled into Square Deal. I was diagnosed as having a fried alternator. I'm so disturbed as to why El Sobronte Towne Garage for $900 could not figure this out....instead put in a radiator and belts for a screaming alternator???? I'm with Julie B. Brian clearly runs a solid family business here. I've been twice for minor things such as oil changes and most recently a flat tire. He fixed the hole and clearly demonstrated integrity by not over charging or having me buy a new tire. Squeaky brakes and my car would stop while I was driving. I took it to Big O in SF on Mission where I've been going for 10+years since I work in SF and I would get one excuse or another. I've since moved to the east bay and Square Deal was in walking distance, I took a chance. The brakes squeaked beacause Big O put in shotty brake pads and it was just too much to drive into SF just for that. Square Deal said that the brakes would be a nusiance but they were working fine. They would replace when needed. The car stalled due to a part which they replaced within hours of me bringing in the car. So they give me a call that my car is ready for pick up. I get there and asked them which arm and leg they wanted or if they wanted my first born. Here I was thinking I was going to pay thousands of dollars and it turns out the entrie cost was below 400.00!! I'm definitly going back. read more

Great first and everlasting impression. It started with Bing charging my vehicle's battery to make sure it was good, then drove the vehicle around to see if it may be the alternator. I brought my vehicle in to get the alternator replaced and spoke to Brian and had the car for the morning. Brian called and stated that the alternator was good and just to replace the battery. The car needed to run for a few days to let all the sensors reset and collect data before testing again. They had me return the car to make sure all errors were clear. They have different stories than the other one when come to answers.
