I'm so late in reviewing Square Deal Garage. We've been bringing our cars to square deal garage for 25+ years. This is probably one of the best repair shops in the area. They do top quality repair work. They are honest and upfront on what needs to be done. Back in January, we noticed that our car was leaking some type of fluids, and over heating. In a panic, we stopped by Square Deal, and they were to take us even though they were super busy that day. A few days later we had our car back with all the necessary repairs done. Fast forward to last Friday, I noticed some fluids leaking under the front of the car again. I took my car to Square Deal, and they ran all the necessary diagnostics and found nothing leaking or any broken hoses. It turned out to be condensation from the AC. The pricing is competitive and if they see something else that needs to be done other than the original issues, they would call and let me know before proceeding with the repairs. They are a family owned and local and conveniently located in downtown Pinole. Brian and Paunch(sp?) are super nice, helpful and knowledgeable. I can't say enough about Square Deal Garage. I have 2 cars serviced there . It was the previous year when the repair had to be done to be able to pass smog. This was my husbands work truck and after he died I kept it but don't drive it very much. Although I am older, I remember where i have my cars serviced. I guess its hard to imagine that a car that is older than 2000 year models has double the work needed to test it to warrant the double fee to put it on the machine. Thats okay, yours isnt the only business charging as much as they can. It was sticker shock for my truck not passing that had just passed smog the previous time. read more

Brought our Toyota Highlander in to diagnose noise coming from the front of the engine. I suspected it was the water pump. I dropped off the vehicle and within a few hours the service tech called me to confirm it was indeed the water pump and gave me the cost estimate of $1300. I made an appointment for early the following week. Dropped off the vehicle in the morning and it was completed by end of the same day. I got an alert on my car that the brake light went out. I took it in here and they did it right away. They only charged me $5.49!! That means they didn't charge me any labor. Ron & Pancho were great guys who helped me and told me the rate for a smog check was $54 which, is better than most auto shops that charge in the Bay Area. Called this morning and brought my 2017 Acura in for its regular maintenance at 1. They handle all the regular service on both of my vehicles (2020 Honda Accord) and always do a great job. Brought my car in as the engine light was on they told me is was because my gas tank cap wasn't closed all the way took 100 off the estimated cost.. Just bought thre car so asked them if it needed. Tune up.... they checked the spark plugs they sai I could easily go 20-30k more miles....you think of I took it to anyplace else they say that or say yelp we need to change all... Shotty repair work...look at the work after they do it since it will probably not be done right! Had transmission seal replaced since it was leaking the day I picked it up, still leaking even though it was minor, they told me bring it back if it continues leaking or gets worse, leak got worse and started leaving spots took back and they want to charge me to repair the shotty work they did they claim it's over warranty when receipt never told me how long was warranty, this place is just out to take your money, now I have to file lawsuit, save your time and money. I needed to have a STAR certified smog service shop do a smog test and certification for me. I found Square Deal Garage on the State of California's Bureau of Automotive Repair Auto Shop Locator website. They did not disappoint. It was easy to make an appointment. They quickly did the smog test and certification within 15 minutes after I arrived and checked in. They just charged me $54. A car dealership tried to charge me $199 for the same work. When I booked an appointment for a smog check the gentleman who answered was very friendly and gave me options for appointment times. The day of my appointment, I forgot to bring my DMV paperwork and the gentleman at the reception desk told me not to worry and he would copy the information down. It didn't take more than 15 minutes to check the smog for my car and I received a receipt and their system alerted the DMV that my car passed smog. I paid $53 for a smog check and received a printed receipt. My husband's car may be due next year for smog so we will definitely come back. Efficient, friendly and wonderful service! read more

I just recently took my car to Square Deal, but I've also been there a few other times in the past. From my experience they live by their name. You get a square deal. I wouldn't say they're the least expensive place to go but the quality of work is worth every penny. They're also very honest. There was one time in particular that they could have charged me for something and I wouldn't have been the wiser, but they told me I wouldn't need it. Anyway, I just had my timing belt, all other belts, and water pump changed. It took a little longer than estimated but it was done in a day. The car was so quiet I thought it died but no it was just running really well. The level of pride in quality professionalism is very obvious and I usually come away feeling that way. It feels like a real business as opposed to a backyard mechanic with a building. They're very busy so often an appointment is needed. That might be a problem if in a hurry but I have to say they have exceeded my expectations. read more

So I believe in helping out the local business, so I pay extra to have a high mileage oil change as well as a 30 point inspection on a car I just bought for my daughter. After awhile I see them drive my car around the block, I go into the shop and ask about my car. They tell me everything is fine. I asked them if they put my car on the rack and they say, "YES of course". So I ask them about the leak underneath my car. This is where the lies start flying and blaming ME for not telling them about the leak. Umm, wouldn't you notice this, if in fact you really did an "inspection". I sat at the coffee shop right across the street and watched my car being "NOT serviced". They NEVER put it on the rack, but then turns around and blames the tech for failing to do this?? During these crazy times, I was relieved to see that everyone was wearing a mask & they require you to do so too! Friendly & knowledgeable ....... especially about the computerized features of your car ........ I rolled in yesterday with a "change oil" message prominently on the dash & the super nice front desk guy reset it within 2 minutes!! This business is that time of old school establishment where you feel that you could roll up unannounced & get friendly service. That alone makes me a customer for life!
