Let me say that I LOVE the other joint in Islamorada we have been to both places multiple times. Last night was a bit of a staycation and we thought we would go down to the original. We got the Cobia bites buffalo shrimp and main was the almond grouper( I just wanted grouper but I guess this was the only way to have it. Cobia and buffalo shrimp were good. The grouper on the other hand was very sweet super sweet. I was not happy with the grouper and at $55 bucks was more than disappointed. The worst part is when we were driving back my stomach started to feel unwell. When we got back to the hotel I threw up EVERYTHING. I was then woken up in the middle of the night with it coming from the other side. Idk what is going on down south but we will not be going back to that one again. Very disappointed read more

Saturday Date Night!! Carol and I split an absolutely delicious stuffed Lobster dinner along with a coconut shrimp appetizer at The Square Grouper Bar and Grill this evening. Just a short ebike ride from our Venture Out site the restaurant opens for dinner at 5PM. They offer daily dinner specials with a sizable beer and wine list. We stopped by the original location and were thrilled. My husband had the yahoo and I had the square grouper. No complaints that is for sure. The fish was fresh and delicious, served with fries and cole slaw. The waitress Jenny was incredible very attentive. Everything was so good that we went again although we were staying in Florida City the ride was worth it. Second time I had the square grouper again and my husband had the shrimp platter. Yummy!!! Anthony our server was great. Very chill but super helpful in guiding us when we asked what he would eat on the menu. I got the grouper sandwich fried and added a slice of cheese which made it extra yummy. The sweet potato fries were also great along with the dipping sauce. Zero complaints at all about this experience. Food for everyone in my party was good. We also had the smoked fish dip as a starter and that was surprisingly simple and delicious served with chopped jalapeño, red onion and tomato and delicious little seedy crackers. Okay, first the food is always loved and solid at SG. Years of consistency, Love that. Unfortunately i had an annoying experience yesterday at SG in the middle keys. Not only did we only see our server one time to take our order, but he never brought our drinks, we had to ask two other people and finally got them 2/3 of the way through the meal. We needed a couple of other items and had to flag anyone down to help us. I wanted a dessert, but there was no place to order since no one tended to us. I call it a, " choppy" meal because nothing flowed. I know SG just returned from the month-long closure, maybe they are still on sleep mode? They will get it together again, I was just the guinea pig. read more

We had a really nice dinner here, and Shannon was our server -- she was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything went smoothly. We shared the Shrimp Fritters special with cilantro lime dipping sauce ($21), which were crisp and flavorful, and also split a Caesar salad ($15). The house-made croutons were absolutely fabulous and made the salad stand out. For mains, I had the Yellowtail Snapper ($44), blackened, with jasmine rice and fresh green beans. The flavors were excellent, though the portion was smaller than expected. My wife had the Yellowtail Snapper Piccata style, and while it was prepared beautifully, her portion was noticeably larger than mine. Almost made us think they missed a filet? Overall, the food was fresh and well-prepared, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. I noticed this restaurant while crossing over Cudjoe Key on our way down to Key West - I had no idea when we'd be returning to our campground on Grassy Key or if we've grab a bite to eat before departing Key West, well as luck would have it we decided to wait and give the Square Grouper Bar and Grill a try. Once we arrived I noticed the daily special was "meatloaf" no no no way was I choosing this no matter how delicious it could be - without seeing a menu I had already decided I was eating grouper and probably blackened whether that would be served on a bun or a plate. We walked in and wow it was not what we expected by the look of the exterior, this place is beautiful and somewhat classy inside and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the outside but the inside will blow you away. We were seated without a wait and greeted by Jenny who is definitely the face of this business today. She is so attentive and explains everything so if you have a question ask, she not only knows the menu she knows the dishes - we both ordered blackened grouper sandwiches with fries and coleslaw with their homemade tartar sauce on the side. I wanted unsweetened ice tea and she informed me their tea is passion tea so I decided on a Dr.Pepper which she served already poured in a glass of ice after asking if that was okay. The food was absolutely delicious the fish was cooked perfectly served on a nice bun with thin crispy onion rings piled on top of the fish - I ate these as a side, they are so good as are the unique fries and the tartar sauce is to die for. The service is beyond outstanding and the prices are reasonable and a great value, I did peek at a few other dishes from the kitchen and they all looked equally delicious, I don't think you can make a bad choice here - after one bite of the grouper I was convinced if it's on the menu or special board you're in for a real treat - including the meatloaf... read more

I have been to Their sister restaurant and loved it.i have been to a place with the identical name In Jupiter fla and enjoyed it.i was shocked to be so disappointed with this place. We had coconut shrimp and tuna/avocado egg rolls A's appetizers. The shrimp were ok .when eating the other App,I could not find any tuna. It was like fried avocado in pasta shell.sooo disgusting. The blackened wahoo was very good ,but a bit on the tiny side. For 2 diners who did not. Have any alcohol ,we were shocked when we found out Thanh bill Including tip was Over 180$. Wow! I've been trying to stop and eat here since 2021, I always missed when they were open! I finally got the chance right before new years to stop as I was heading out of key west. I sat at the bar, the bartender was friendly made some recommendations and of course I got the grouper sandwich, sautéed. He recommend fried as his fav way to have it but sautéed was second best. I was in and out in about 30-45 mins, it was starting to get busy, so I hit it at the right time. It's nicer on the inside then I expected and I'd for sure make a point to stop Again. read more

They had Wahoo which is one of my favorite fish to order. I wish I had ordered it grilled (well, I did), then I changed it to fried. It was still very good, but a little on the crispy side. My husband had the conch chowder, very spicy, but very delicious. He also had the fish dip, which was very good. Service was quick. We were traveling to Key West and finally got to the restaurant at 2:23pm. The host said we had to order quickly as the kitchen was closing at 2:30 in order to prepare for dinner. The fish tank was a nice addition to the feel of authenticity that is was mainly a seafood restaurant. We enjoyed it very much. The key lime tartar sauce is a nice addition to any fish. read more

After a four hour drive from Boca towards key west, we were looking for an interesting roadside seafood joint to hit for dinner before getting to key west. Reviews guided us here and it did not disappoint. After about a 30 minute wait, we enjoyed the fried mozzarella appetizer, dinner salads, fish of the day (mahi, grouper) and fish stew. I had the small fish stew portion and it was plenty, so the larger size can feed 2 people - plus the red curry sauce was delicious. It's a good stop on your way to key west. read more

On our way to Key West we stopped for lunch at Square Grouper. Their restaurant in Islamorada was closed on Tuesdays so we visited the Cudjoe key location. The restaurant was busy at the lunch hour yet the place was clean and service was attentive. A specials chalk board showed the fresh daily fish available. Mahi and Tile fish were available on our visit. My brother had fish tacos with grilled Mahi. Two nice sized tacos came with fries or a side salad. He said the tacos were great. I had a salad with blacked Mahi added on top. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. Fresh fish tastes so good! This place serves really fresh seafood. My nephew ordered a chicken sandwich. He never varies from chicken. Even in a great seafood town like here. He said it was so much better than the chicken he had on South Beach. Square Grouper is a wonderful restaurant with really fresh fish. Even the chicken expert thought the place was the best! read more

While a large group of my family and friends were visiting the Florida Keys for a week, we enjoyed the Square Grouper so much we went twice! It may have had something to do with being the closest restaurant to our VRBO. It was also very easy to get on the waitlist online before even showing up to the restaurant. They were quite adept at handling our large party of 9 during both visits. With the majority of the group being older, we preferred when we were seated in the dining room as opposed to when we were in the bar area. The bar area was much louder, so it wasn't as easy for everyone to converse and enjoy each other's company. However, the food was so good it didn't bother us that much. Our group was a big fan of the Square Grouper Seafood Stew so much so that some of our group ordered it both times that we came to the restaurant! It was delightfully creamy with just the right amount of kick. It comes in two sizes, but the small was the perfect portion for one person especially when we supplemented with a few appetizers. For appetizers we enjoyed the flash fried conch and the fried calamari. Both were deliciously light and crispy in their own regard, but the ponzu and wasabi drizzle on the conch was so tasty it had one of our group literally licking the plate. On the second visit I ordered the pasta bowl with spaghetti squash and local fish. In the description it mentioned a pesto sauce, but I was a little disappointed it didn't come across as flavorful as I would have liked. If you have a large group on Cudjoe Key, look no further than the Square Grouper for your dining needs! read more

So this place was recommended highly. It was OK, but overrated IMO. All inside seating with no views. You could be anywhere. Prices are among the highest we've seen in the Keys. I had a salad with the blackened grouper added. The fish was very good, but the portion was pretty small. Wife had the coconut shrimp, which were large. She enjoyed them. Went to this restaurant in Islamorada for dinner and loved it so much.- we had to try this location on our way to the Key West airport! We didn't order much, but started with the tuna appetizer which was sooo good. Loved the peanut sauce it was in and was just enough to give it good flavor! My husband and I split the Philly cheesesteak after seeing online recommendations and it didn't disappoint! Was so tender and fresh!! My daughter ordered the blackened chicken kid's meal and the chicken was incredibly tender. Can't wait to go back next time we are in town! read more

We went upstairs to the lounge and hit happy hour , 5 dollar stone crab claws and 20% off all cocktails ... the key west old fashioned with Papa pillar rum instead of bourbon was a hit and my wife's cosmo was perfect , we added 6 claws which had a claw cracker and picking fork added ( nice touch) as well as soft shell crab sliders , yum , we will be back !! read more

But once we sat down the wheels came off. Kept passing by this place and finally decided to swing in for lunch. It was fantastic. We had swordfish special, grilled with banana pepper compound butter, chicken wild rice soup and house salad. Loved it so much we came back next day for dinner. We had a little wait so went upstairs to another bar in the same building. Well hidden but worth a visit. These guys know what they're doing with crafting cocktails. Beautiful space as well. Back down to dinner and I would have given 5 stars except for one of the signature dishes fell short. The food was really good and the portions are big. We had the almond crusted grouper and it was delicious. We also had the tuna / avocado spring roll. Not an item I'd order again. It had no avocado that I saw and had only a regular spring roll flavor. Not good with fish. Sorry. The Ceasar salad was nothing much but the lettuce was very fresh. Our guest had the skirt steak and they both loved it. For dessert we all had the brownie with ice cream and I'll tell you what. It was enormous and fantastic. The service is why it's getting a low star rating. It was latter at night but the server was rushing us and then never showed up again. So we sat for awhile before we could cash out. The place inside and out looked super cool and modern. It has been one of the cleanest restaurants I've eaten at here in the lower keys. Nice good. Our fishing guide highly recommended the Square Grouper Bar and Grill for date nights while staying in Little Torch. We visited the bar upstairs for a pre dinner drink, I will say the bartenders here are artists! Our drinks were phenomenal and they make the different infused simple syrups in house, which is pretty cool. We then moved downstairs for dinner and we're blown away with the food. I ordered the pasta with blackened shrimp and my husband got the grouper. Both were delicious! They had a banana bread bread pudding on special this evening, it was so yummy! We decided to try this place on Cujo Key. We got there at 5 and lucky got a table before it filled up. Our waiter seemed very attentive, at first. Almost rushing us to get our orders in. Skip the bacon wrapped shrimp. He had told us there were 10 shrimp, but only 3 were served. If we had seen him again before dessert, we would have questioned him, but he was MIA. A disappointment for 20. My coconut shrimp were ok, but I think the fryer was a little hot, because they were very dark. And the dipping sauce was just strange. The grouper was delicious. When we went to order dessert, the waiter tried to talk us into cheesecake, after we told him key lime pie. His demeanor was just a bit off. We went to two Square Grouper restaurants- Islamorada (dinner) and Cudjoe Key (lunch). Both were excellent and had great service. For dinner the Swordfish special just melted in your mouth and the Oysters Rockefeller app was a hit. For lunch the blackened fish Reuben wrap was a hit. read more
