Pan-seared Yellowtail Snapper with mashed sweet potatoes

When in the Keys...this is the place to experience! not what you expect but better! as a self-confessed foodie, I love finding obscure but delicious places to visit! The Square Grouper in Key West is not as obscure as unsuspecting place for a great place to gather, relax & enjoy without the overcrowded and ok food; here we experienced delicious fresh hot food, with an amazing & happy staff, and the perfect ambiance! The raw bar area is ingenious! And NO there is not a dead seafood smell!! There is so much detail and thought put into this place, you have to experience to understand!!! Our server was Kelsey, truly great at her job!! And we met Nate one of the managers, he is a gem and can tell you anything you want to know about this restaurant, food, and service! We will be back again and again! The four of us had 2 specials (Snapper - two different ways) and 2 menu staples....Mac n Cheese with pulled pork, and the filet with Grilled Shrimp! We had martinis (with marinated stuffed ) and a beer for libations! By the time we left....the place was packed with a long time...and worth it!

The food was fresh and the staff was great. It takes no reservations. It has a large outdoor seating area. We had three starters: spicy calamari, shrimp cakes, and egg rolls. For dinner we had fried whole yellowtail. The starter portion was huge and was suitable for sharing. The yellowtail was fresh and tender. All starters were delicious.

Was recommended this place by a local and it didn't disappoint! One of the places you can go to in order to get reliable local seafood. Delicious table bread to share. They can prepare your fish in a variety of ways, sautéed brought out the flavor well. A upscale dinner place that was well worth it!

Wow. First night and our first stop was this bustling popular eatery not far from Old Town. The friendly hostess took our name and number and quoted a 20 minute wait around 8pm on a Friday night, ended up being about half that and were so lucky to get two reserved seats at the bar - the most comfortable barstools ever.... Michael the bartender was prompt and efficient yet never felt like he was rushing us. His cocktails were worth every calorie - ha - the spicy peach martini to start and the luscious key lime martini to finish. We were also impressed with Keely who moved nonstop making these drinks for the rest of the entire restaurant right in front of our seats. Oysters were fresh and flavorful and we got an assortment from FL, MA and WA. Our entrees were blackened grouper and Cajun Oscar tilefish. The rice and green beans were a great complement to the fish and all were cooked perfectly. Best key lime pie we've ever had topped off the meal, and the spacious dining area was larger than it seemed when we first walked in. Outdoor seating also was available.

Amazing food. Grabbed a spot at the bar or we might still be waiting! This place is popular and for good reason. The red snapper was quite tasty as well as the filet had by my better half. Saved room for the Key Lime pie because, well why not!

Martini time! Get the blue cheese, stuffed olives too

Square grouper is an absolute gem to visit while in Key West. It's off of the main tourist drag, but well worth the search to find it. So good, we came here twice on our vacation . The Raw Bar, the fresh fish , the awesome menu selections including steak and delicious salads and a killer bar scene make this spot worthy of its five stars. They don't take reservations and I believe they're closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Show up early and put your name in and bonus, cocktail waitresses will come out to you in the waiting areas and deliver you a cocktail of choice. Yaaas.... This makes waiting so much easier. But here's a tip, if you offer to sit at either the raw bar or the cocktail bar, you will either get seated immediately or very shortly thereafter. We did this and Loved watching all the action. And the servers at the bar were all so incredible , friendly and efficient. You can really see the great teamwork in this restaurant. For drinks: we tried Gin Martini's with their awesome house made blue cheese, stuffed olives, a whiskey cocktail and some great white wines from their well curated wine list. Great Beers on tap also, You can't go wrong here they've got very talented bartenders. Apps: our bartender highly recommended the FLASH FRIED CONCH and it was out of this world. The best I have ever had. Absolutely tender inside, but crispy and perfectly breaded on the outside with a delicate garlic butter sauce on top add a squeeze of lemon , wow! So good We got this both times. Smoked Fish Dip : while in the keys, you must try the various preparations of fish dip and this was a good one. Salads: their salads really shine. We shared the Caesar salad and it was lemony with just the right amount of Caesar dressing and fresh grated Parmesan. Cashew Salad : tender fresh greens with an awesome vinaigrette and toasted cashews. Yum. Mains: we tried the triple tail dinner and the tile fish special. You were given the options of about four different styles of preparation here. You can choose classic, which is grilled, you can choose blackened, fried or with a sauce. We went with classic and the tile fish came with a delicious lemony beurre Blanc sauce. We also tried the grouper dinner and it did not disappoint. They simply know how to prepare fish expertly here. As you can imagine, we had no room for dessert, but their Keylime pie did sound quite tempting. Do not miss this fun lively spot to enjoy delicious Atlantic and Gulf seafood you will not be disappointed.

This was our fourth time to Square Grouper and every single time we go it is more fabulous than the last -- Always spectacular service! Always spectacular food and drinks! I would never a visit to Key West without having a meal here.

This was my favorite restaurant in Key West. From the moment we walked in, I was impressed with the service. Every single employee we passed, both entering and leaving, greeted us or thanked us for coming. It created such a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the menu and specials. She made the entire dining experience wonderful. For food, we ordered raw oysters, swordfish empanadas, togarashi seared ahi tuna, whole yellowtail, and finished with a key lime pie. The oysters were good, though I personally prefer the flavor of oysters from the Bay Area. The swordfish empanadas, however, were absolutely incredible and truly the best I have ever had. The sauce they were served with complemented them perfectly. The whole yellowtail was crisp, flavorful, and cooked beautifully. The seared ahi tuna, which I ordered well done, was delicious and had a little bit of spice to it . We ended the meal with key lime pie, which was both tasty and memorable, easily one of the best we tried during our trip. This restaurant exceeded my expectations in both food and hospitality. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Key West.

Listennnnn. If you ever make it down to the FL Keys and fail to have at least one delicious meal at Square Grouper, that's on you. I had the pleasure of visiting at least two of their locations - Islamorada & Key West. Both had impeccable service and fantastic meals. I love the artsy vibe and I know I'm going to have a great time with some of the best food, no matter how big or small my party is. I haven't had a disappointment yet.

We finally got to try the Square Grouper this trip and it was amazing. My husband had the seafood stew and I had a lobster grilled cheese special. Both were delicious. The daily specials all looked great so it was difficult to choose. Our server, John, was excellent as well. We are looking forward to coming back on our next trip to Key West.

Square Grouper is a steak and seafood house with a raw bar and upscale feel with a street mural/graffiti vibe. It differs from the traditional restaurant scene in favor of a casual flair but treats patrons like fine dining does. The food is top notch, from the menu to the daily specialties and fresh catches. We got the ahi tuna and yellowtail snapper, finishing with the key lime pie. The price was reasonable for fine dining but the food was perfectly balanced and cooked with just the right amount of seasoning. Service was top notch and attentive without being smothering. They have the visits and checks down pat and are always smiling and jovial. Square Grouper is an amazing spot just off the water, but priced alike competitors on the water with less imaginative food. Get there before 7pm to miss the wait and long lines, but it's worth the wait if you are going to experience some of the best seafood in the keys. Also: key lime pie is a MUST. That is all: 10/10

Wonderful food and service. It was the best meal we had in Key West. We even tried to go a second time but they were closed that night.

From the moment we entered the restaurant to the long after time of our departure, she continuously greeted us with excitement, joined us in conversation, and even helped us capture moments in pictures. She really helped make this a memorable experience for us. Now to the food. So I have had Broils in multiple areas of the country. From Maraylamd, Texas and to the Low Country of Charlestin SC, but I have never had as tasty of Broil as I just had at the Yummy Crab in Key West Florida. I mean this place was absolutely amazing! The flavor of every piece of crab, corn, crawfish, shrimp, sasauge and potatoes in the dripping wet cajun sauce served in a bag to retain all that juice, flavor and aroma was all nearly too much to contain. So glad of all the wonderful places on the island we had to eat we chose this place. Thank you Jackie for your outstanding hospitality and service. You are amazing!

The spice they had for the boil had a sweet taste might have been the premade seafood boil seasoning. Thats what it tasted like to me .Wasn't to my liking. Something was eh about it. The fried oysters had a but if a fishy taste no go. I know a lot of places weights the seafood but the portions when they came out it was more like they added more corn and potatoes. For the price definitely wasn't worth it.

I was a little bummed we didn't get to see the view, but the ambiance inside is lovely too. Their menus light up which was so helpful in a dark restaurant. It was a beautiful evening, and we were seated with a lovely view of the waterfront. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and we were happy we chose this restaurant. Food: I always enjoy when a restaurant offers a creative and inventive cocktail menu. I won't go into detail on each one, but they were all very good, especially the Spiced Old Fashioned. At our server's suggestion, we ordered a couple of plates of the Grilled Ciabatta Bread. The bread was nicely grilled, and the roasted garlic manchego butter made it especially delicious. I normally try not to fill up on bread, but this was absolutely worth it. We ordered an eclectic mix of small and large plates. Some of the standout dishes included the Lobster Mac and Cheese, Swordfish, and Crab Cake. The Brussels sprouts took top honors, perfectly roasted without being greasy, full of flavor, and complemented by a generous amount of bacon. The one disappointment was the Pork Shank Osso Buco. While it was tender, it was only warm and a bit underseasoned. It was good, but not great, especially for someone who enjoys pork shank dishes. We saved room for dessert, and they were all crowd pleasers. My personal favorite was the Cuban Bread Pudding. The Chocolate Pistachio Crème Brûlée was also unique and delicious. Service: We had reservations for 7:30 and were seated promptly. The hostess and our server did a great job of making us feel welcome. The entire two-hour meal was well paced, and we always felt attended to. I was especially impressed with the backlit menu portfolios. They made it easy to read in the evening without guests needing to use their phone flashlights, which was a thoughtful and effective use of technology. Since we were celebrating a birthday, they placed a sign on the table acknowledging the occasion, which was a nice touch. It would have been even better if one of the desserts had included a lit candle. Atmosphere: The setting is beautiful. We were seated in a smaller dining room with several other tables. When we first arrived, there was a larger, very boisterous group nearby, and it made it difficult to hear our server. Fortunately, they left about 30 minutes into our meal, and the atmosphere became much more relaxed and enjoyable. Our waterfront view added to the experience. This was a very special evening. It was also the most expensive meal we had in Key West, so it was reasonable to have high expectations. With a few improvements, it could have been a five-star experience. Definitely a place we would return to.
