My friend Tina who lives in Brevard had told me about this place so I was excited to check it out for a weekday dinner. We worked up an appetite walking around the lovely town of Brevard checking out the various shops, art galleries and restaurants. They have a large covered patio with plenty of 2 and 4 top tables. The menu is really good so we shared a bowl of Brunswick Stew which was just excellent. Tina had the Cobb salad with the special Orange salad dressing. I had the trout stuffed with crawfish and topped with pimento cheese grits which was really good. It would have been nice if the waiter had advised it was bone in, yike! They are known for their specials developed by their Chef Adam Wilson of the Culinary Art Institute of Atlanta. They also have an interesting offer where you can buy a bottle of wine and what you don't finish you can take home. I understand they also opened a sister restaurant in Hendersonville, NC. read more

Wife and I to Brevard for a long weekend to see the mountains and chase some of the 400+ waterfalls. Spent the first day walking around town and wandered into a back courtyard hiding this gem. I thought, "Square Root, square root of what?" Deliciousness? That would mean it was only partly delicious, but... It was awesome. Lisa had the Shrimp and grits. The grits were a fried cake crusted in almonds and mixed with brie. It came with 5 large shrimp cooked to perfection. I had the pimento cheese burger. Cooked med, super juicy and flavorful. The homemade sweet potato chips were a great side. Ask for the chipotle ranch to dip in. We were there for lunch but if you want to go for dinner I would definitely make reservations. We enjoyed the most wonderful lunch experience at Square Root today! The food was creative, unique, exciting, and absolutely delicious! The staff was absolutely fantastic!John served us with passion and charisma! His love for the restaurant was so evident as he greeted us and served us so well! He recommended the Brussels Sprouts for an appetizer. They were perfection! My wife got the Hangar steak and I ordered the Peach Glazed Pork Flat Iron. The combination of flavors were thrilling and unforgettable! The dessert was the perfect finale. We ordered the coconut cake and loved every bite. Another highlight was our new friend, a local who eats there every day. His name is Thomas, and we all said he should be the next mayor of Brevard. Such a warm and friendly gentleman! The meal was so good we asked to meet the chef, and thankfully he came out. It was an honor to shake Chef Adam Wilson's hand and thank him for this memorable dining experience. We arrived at 5:45 (no reservation) on a rainy day! There was already a line and this was the 2nd restaurant we tried to get into! They did give us a table outside under the porch so we stayed dry. Absolutely amazing little spot. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. We came on Tuesday so we shared a half price bottle of wine. We ordered the flat iron pork - the flavors of the collards, peaches, boiled peanuts, and sweet potato gnocchi - all mixed together was fabulous. We sat outside and it was lovely. In Brevard for our wedding anniversary, after a day of hiking we stopped at square root for lunch. We sat on the patio with Taylor as our server, he was lovely, the food was delicious, and the outdoor patio was very relaxing. Our one issue: everything on the menu looked great it was hard to decide what to eat. Our solution: go back for dinner! *edit* we came back for dinner again the next night! At dinner we sat at the bar and Chris and Zora made the experience better then expected! They were both so welcoming. My husband got the lamb special and wasn't sure on the temp to order as we don't eat lamb often- Zora advised him on the house recommendation which was much appreciated! The atmosphere at the bar gives the feeling of fine dining in a neighborhood restaurant. The locals who sat near by us were also very welcoming as we chatted and were given advice on hiking trails in the area for the next day. I ended up having the hanger steak and my husband the trout. Came here while I was on vacation about two years ago and I still think about it pretty often. It was some of the best food I had while in NC. I forget exactly what I ordered but it had Tuna and some sort of sweet sauce. Restaurant has a great atmosphere, a hole in the wall vibe. I've been coming here over 6 years and each time our dinner entrees are amazing and the menu always excites. this weekend was my first visit over lunch and the London Broil sandwhich was melt in your mouth fantastic! Anne-Marie, Kody, and Zora all took very tentive care and the entire staff was very helpful of my disability and medical scooter needed to walk and get around. The atmosphere is so enjoyable and calm and the location tucked in the ally gives you an off the beaten path vibe. We came for an early dinner and started with the Bravarian pretzel board, which arrives with a large chewy, salty pretzel and a board chock full of goodies including meats, cheeses, olives, and pickled okra. For my main I had the fig and grilled chicken salad, which was very tasty, with blue cheese crumbles, grape tomatoes, bacon pieces, spiced pecans and pumpkin seeds. It arrives in a large savory herb tortilla bowl. Their outdoor patio space is nice and relaxing in good weather. The inside dining area is more intimate and moody, with exposed brick and wood architectural elements. sted. Crispy zucchini sticks as my side and I was in heaven. Lily helped us settle the desert debate and recommended the limoncello cake with whipped mascarpone cheese icing. And if course, a glass of limoncello from the bar was a perfect pairing. We enjoyed our meal so much and were sitting there enjoying our dessert and watching a man write the dinner special on the chalkboard: chimichura grilled octopus with whipped potatoes and honey glazed carrots. We visited this place on recommendation and very much enjoyed the experience. On a Friday night there was a wait so we enjoyed a beverage at the bar. Was impressed that all staff was focused on serving customers. We had stepped into the bar for just a minute when a waitress asked if we needed anything. Busy night and a small place and she took are order and served us before we were seated. The food was outstanding in presentation and taste. Found the square root on Yelp while on a weekend getaway with my wife. we read the menu beforehand and had already picked out a few dishes before we arrived. We arrived and were seated promptly. Everything was going smoothly until.......... We waited for about 10 minutes before any of the served acknowledged us. Not sure if there was confusion but a server came over and asked if we had been attended to. He picked up our table and proceeded to take really good care of us for the rest of the evening. For our mains we ordered the Peach Glazed Pork Flat Iron and my wife had the Square Root Salad with Salmon. Both of the dishes were pretty amazing. I am not a big peach fan but it worked really well. Great combination of flavors and the pork was cooked to perfection. The salmon in my wife's salad was also cooked perfect. I would come back here when I am back in the area. If the wait for a server to co e to our table hadn't been so long, I would have given it 5 stars. I will and have recommended this restaurant to others. Please support this business. read more

Great spot for food & drinks in downtown Brevard. We were here for lunch on a Saturday. I had the "Day After Thanksgiving" sandwich w/fries and it really hit the spot. For dessert we shared a slice of coconut cake. It took about 15 min for them to bring out the cake, which was crazy (we almost tab out before it came). The cake was beautifully presented, but I noticed some of the icing was melted. After digging in, the outer layers of the cake were very warm with melted icing while the center of the cake was cold. Can you say "defrost that frozen cake in the microwave". The cake was still tasty, but to me, defrosting cake in a microwave should not ever happen in a restaurant that employees chefs (maybe in the occasional truckstop diner). Although, this was disappointing I'm only deducting one star because everything else was executed well and the place boasts a modern, yet comfortable vibe. read more

After hiking in the mountains we chose lunch at Square Root. The food was excellent & the service was excellent. We started with an app of tuna nachos. It was basically sushi on a tortilla chip. The flavors of the tuna & hoisin sauce & seaweed came together in a very satisfying way. My main dish was a cheesesteak made with London Broil. It was superb. The sandwich was loaded with meat & caramelized onions & tender lean meat slices & melted cheese. For a side I had pasta salad which was delicious. The coating on the pasta was a cross between thousand island dressing & cole slaw dressing. It worked well. Basically all the calories I burned hiking I replenished at lunch, lol. read more

Sadly, this trip proved frustrating. We traveled from Georgia to visit Brevard. We have 1 child with celiac's disease (age 6) and 1 with a dairy intolerance (age 8). We always bring food for them to accommodate. Unfortunately, after our meal where we spent good money ($64), we were told outside food can't be brought in. After explaining the why behind our a actions, the waitress persisted stating that they had plenty of options which 1. I didn't see based on the menu 2. Nor would I trust a new restaurant's cross contamination efforts in their fryers or on their grill enough to jeopardize the remainder of the trip. The service aspects of this restaurant seem to be its greatest opportunity for improvement. read more

While you're walking down the main street of Brevard we looked down an alley and there are some wonderful restaurants down there including the square root restaurant. It has a lovely outside patio we ate inside it's absolutely charming. As soon as you enter there's a large chalkboard on the wall and it has some of the new eats for the day and specials. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. We were there for lunch and it was absolutely delicious the service was also wonderful. They ran out of dessert which was a bummer at least the one we wanted lol. Give it a try Brevard is absolutely lovely and Main is a great street for shopping and eating on. read more

Dined in and enjoyed our food and gracious server and hostess, Mary. Lunch started with a tasty poke ahi tuna appetizer. Flavorful beef soup that was almost like a stew. The London broil sandwich with delicious tender meat, cheese and au jus. Finished with a jar full of key lime pie stuffing sans crust and topped with whipped cream. What happened here? This was our 2nd visit to Brevard and to this restaurant. We put our name in at 12:05 and were told 25 mins...not her fault that it ended up being 55 mins because we asked for the porch...it was a nice day. We were there before and the food was really good so we recommended it to our friends. Out of the four of us we were all left feeling that this place is not a great restaurant. I ordered the steak burger...still don't understand what tan and black onion rings are ‍. I ordered it medium and it was way under. I told the waitress and she took it back to get another one. My bun bottom was wet and soggy and it even fell out of my hands because there was nothing to hold on to. The burger had zero flavor even with onion rings and BBQ sauce. My wife's BLT ...bread was old and stale and the bacon was not cooked for a sandwich. The waitress dumped a glass of water on the table...at least it was the iron mess so only my wife's feet got wet. Sauce for zucchini was, missing, plates served in a not appealing way. A real bummer of a meal. Also I think our waitress was a bit in over her head ...it was busy...which should be a good sign but not this time. Jacob, I appreciate your prompt response. The wait was mostly on us as I said earlier because we asked to be outside. Honestly we sat there for a long time while another burger was cooked, waited for silverware after our food arrived, waited for paper towels to clean up the spilled water and by then waiting to talk to a manager wasn't even in our thoughts...we were ready to go. The zucchini fries were the best thing we ate. The waitress did try to fix the things I posted and in no way are we people that are hard to please. My review was truthful from our experience...you guys were very busy and maybe too busy so that some things were overlooked. read more
