I don't really buy anything but Magic cards there (and peripherals), but the comic section is up to date and they offer a subscription service - so tell them what books to pull and they'll be there waiting for you when you come in to pick them up. The Lair has recently started bringing in celebrities (from the comic and sci-fi/fantasy world) for signing events and meet and greets - for a store in the Bronx, this is a big deal! Magic the Gathering is now a big part of what The Lair does - and if you're looking to play on a Friday night or over the weekend (Standard, Modern, Constructed, Draft, etc...) this is your spot in the Bronx. For marathon sessions - caffeine and sugar filled snacks are available for purchase (most at $1 each). The owner goes out of his way to do right by his customers - all sorts of perks, give-aways, etc... And the regular customers are a pack of really great guys (I saw someone bring a girlfriend once - so females do pop in, but don't expect too many of them to be there at any given time). I wish I could give that fifth star, but the accommodations are cramped. It's not anyone's fault - the store was not set up to be a gaming space... But - as you might imagine - some people who play Magic are larger dudes who need space to spread out. And yes - there's a bathroom on site to use - but I don't recommend it if you're claustrophobic (it makes the store iteself appear spacious). Again - these are really only issues if you plan to play games (literally) at The Lair and are going to be there for multiple hours on end. As a straight store for shopping for your comic, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming needs - top notch. Highly recommended!

The store was empty and as we walked toward the back, there was a gentleman sitting in a small office. He grunted at us when we greeted him. When we told him we were there to see about some free comic books he said those were just for kids. When we told him why we were there - seeking donations for Comic Books for Justice, he grunted again. Whether he would like to donate or not, or agrees with our mission or not, it was the rudest customer service I have experienced in a long time. Had he shown even the smallest inkling of kindness, my wife and I would have shopped the store and likely made some decent purchases. In any event, be warned. This is not a nice guy and not a very nice place.

Liar and a cheat. Threatened me because I would not sell him a trunk load of 500 old Marvel comics for 50 cents each claiming I actually agreed to that. This geriatric mess of a person waddled around the counter with a baseball bat and everything! Totally unhinged dolt! The fact that a store…read morewith this kind of character and charm has decided to stick it out speaks to the commitment Corinne (owner) and John (GM) have to offering this unique blend of vintage movies, sports, and collectibles to the community. And like any brick and mortar store, profit margins are tight. That said, in numerous business encounters, I've found pricing to be beyond fair and reasonable. But this is not eBay, Amazon or Walmart. They simply can't "meet or beat" any price when their inventory might be limited in a certain category and/or procured at a price point they can't simply ignore. I would hope a community that wants to see stores like this thrive would appreciate that it must be supported, not by blindly overpaying for product, but understanding that much of the store's stock of merchandise has come to it through many channels and being ok with modest premiums on some (by no means all) items over what you'll find on the internet (where there is no tangible relationship between the parties and the transactions are cold and detached--where the provenance of more esoteric items is questionable at best). Unfortunately, I've seen the store have to put up signs discouraging haggling and rummaging through product. This isn't an ancient Arabian bazaar where you have to haggle for every dollar and deal or you'll lose credibility. It's a business with dedicated individuals trying to offer a welcoming and unique space while pricing the best they can within their modest profit margin targets. And this is not a clubhouse or an extension of your den. Please try to treat the store, merchandise, and humans working here with respect and graciousness. I promise you'll get it in return. And because this is not your play room, but a store catering to the public (many of which come equipped with video security), do not have some misguided expectation that you can berate or criticize the store, its pricing or product and maintain your "privacy". Others in the community who shop here can see and hear you, you're not in your house. And everyone has cell phone cameras that capture any number of public interactions every second of the day. If common decency has no sway over how you carry yourself in public, at least understand that you can't simply carry on with impunity and expect to be cloaked in anonymity. In short, I encourage my fellow patrons to please not let scrounging for the next deal or the impulse to try and nickel and dime the store, because it is unique and accessible, create an atmosphere like so many other impersonal chain stores. Where the desperation to get a better deal, and not (ever) to feel like we've overpaid, turns us into the epitome of lowbrow consumer who doesn't even seem to enjoy the experience. If we think we deserve better, let's try to act our best when shopping at Perfectly Centered and elsewhere in town, and we might just end up being right.

I figured they had to have it in stock. Especially given their massive online store presence. The spot is very unassuming and you have to go up a flight of stairs to get there, but once you get in, the space is warm and inviting. They have racks and racks of comics and trade paperbacks not to mention tons of bins to flip through broken down by character. Unfortunately they didn't have the issue I was looking for, but an employee was quick to look through their system. They did mention that they had it at another location, but it was basically their warehouse & it could be tough to find in person. He was, however, quick to suggest a place like NYCC. When I mentioned I was from LA, he mentioned that if I were to buy it off their website, they usually have discounts that would equate to free shipping. So, while I was unable to find what I was looking for, I was given incredible customer service. I really appreciate that they suggested looking for the issue at a con before even suggesting online purchasing. It showed that they care more about helping me find what I am trying to get vs just making a sale. It shows that they care about what they do and the comic book community as a whole. I'm glad I visited Midtown Comics. And If I am back in the city, I will absolutely return. Until then, looks like they're going to be getting an online purchase from me very very soon.
