We have spent an extraordinary amount of money in both of these stores. We rarely need to make returns, but we just had a recent instance of having to return 5 bags of polymeric sand because we decided to have the job done by a contractor. I saved the receipt and my husband went to the store to return the sand. It was a VERY UNPLEASANT experience to learn that there is a 90 day window on returns (with receipt) and NO EXCEPTIONS ARE GRANTED FOR A RESELLABLE ITEM such as polymeric sand! Needless to say, we have made our LAST purchase at Lowes and I will be sharing this VERY NEGATIVE experience EVERYWHERE I can.

And that's just the stuff I've bought over the past few months. They've got tons more stuff, most of which I don't even know what it is because I'm an unhandy city boy. Perhaps this is a small-town thing, but the staff here seems like they know...everything. They've got valuable advice if you want it, and I'm betting they can either come out and fix stuff, or know who you can hire to do so if you can't do it yourself. Allen and Palmer has a variety of employees that are experts on in home problems and answering questions. They also have several guys on staff that are Master level plumbers. James Decker works on the plumbing crew there and seems to know his way around anything mechanical, plumbing, heating, etc.... There is undoubtedly a bit of mark up on items purchased here. This is because they have to ship things so far. And indeed it would cost you more than the difference to drive to somewhere more urban to purchase the same items. In the 12 years they were on Broadway, I never visited; I have now. It's spacious, and it's got variety, and it's got room for even more once they backfill the inventory they perhaps lessened for the move. I think sharing the parking lot with The Fresh Market is a good thing, because you can now pair good food with good kitchen equipment very conveniently. I liked the selection of items and utensils in the store. I hope they put some focus on unique and specialty items, because otherwise they're competing with larger chains like Kohl's and Bed, Bath & Beyond, who can just inundate the market with inventory and coupons.
