We were able to get a reservation here for 530 on a Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy. I really liked the layout with the green tables and booths. The long mirrors on the walls made the space feel bigger and taller as well. First and foremost, I'm giving this place a 5 for the service as they really went above and beyond. It was not the occasional stop by to refill water and grab dirty plates. Our waiter provided great recommendations and offered me a small sample of a wine I had heard him recommend to another table after I had already ordered my orange wine. In terms of food, the bluefin tuna special was very fresh. We enjoyed the hush puppies and the swordfish belly. The fry basket had thin rectangularly shaped fries which were amazing. The only thing is I wish it came with more than two pieces of shrimp and two pieces of fish. The chargrilled oysters were also very good. The catfish sandwich was delicious, flavorful, and had a great sauce. The catfish basket, on the other hand, was lacking a bit in flavor. The mac and cheese was good, but nothing that stood out. The oysters were fresh and enjoyable. The restaurant does provide high chairs, which was appreciated, but there are no changing tables in the bathroom, so it's not the most family-friendly option for parents with young children. Also tried a new drink, the Freaky French which was tasty. Service again was outstanding, and the meal was great. We'd skip the ribs though next time for the qty and price point. Strange Delight was quite the delightful experience! We made reservation for 7:30pm on Saturday, which I highly advise because it was packed. Couldn't get a dining room seating, but managed to secure counter seats to enjoy the open kitchen concept. Our server Jordan was immensely helpful with his recommendation and service. We decided to follow most of his recommendations and ordered: COLD LOCAL OYSTERS (12): Refreshing and slightly briny. Each oyster was shucked well and made it easy to slurp. It paired very nicely with the vinaigrette and they provided plentiful of the horseradish. I did find these somewhat pricey at 4$ per oysters. CHARGRILLED OYSTERS (6): Notably what they're known for and for darn good reason. These oysters were thicc and flavors came very close to the ones I've tried from NOLA. They were seasoned well with the herbaceous butter concoction. Half a dozen was the perfect amount for us because they were indulgent and meaty. ARCTIC CHAR CRUDO: I could've done without this. This was a bit too rich for my liking. The richness of the aioli + cilantro pesto amplified the fat content of the Arctic Char. Felt like I was swallowing a spoonful of cream and the flavors didn't exactly mesh well. CRAB DIRTY RICE: Loaded with with crab and very easy to share. The dill balanced out the heaviness of the rice and the char bits gave it a very enjoyable texture. I was content with the amount of crab in the dish, but I did wish it added a little more flavor to the dish. MIRLITON SOM TAM: This chayote salad was a fan-favorite. Usually with these salads, I find the seasoning too overpowering or the fruit too ripe, but this salad managed to hit the nail in all categories. The sauce wasn't too spicy or sour, but balanced out the woody flavor profile of the chayote. The fried shallot and cashews added a nice crunch to the dish. BREAD PUDDING: The restaurant offers complimentary bread pudding at the end of the meal and I was looking forward to this the most. The bread pudding was decadent and sweet. I loved how the sweetness of the icing balanced out with hints of cinnamon. Although, I did feel like it needed something like ice cream for it to be the cherry on top. Literally the best charbroiled oysters I've found around NJ/NYC area. 5 stars for that alone.. Are we in Nola or what?! They are GIANT!!!! My wife has been really hyping this spot up the past few months after she had a great first experience. We managed to land a 5pm resy about a week or so prior. They do look like they do walk-ins though at the bar so come early if you want those. We ordered: - Fry Basket - 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters - Shrimp Loaf - Blackened Swordfish Belly I'll say the fry basket was my favorite just because I'm a sucker for fried seafood, but everything was great. I hate saying a restaurant uses quality ingredients, but at Strange Delight it's very obvious all the seafood and ingredients they source are quality. Everything is served piping hot and delicious. If you like seafood, especially cajun-inspired, the food will hit. But beyond the food, there were a few hiccups with service that were worth mentioning: - The time spacing between our dishes were kind of long, we later realized it's because the waitress forgot to put in our order of oysters. Thankfully they comped us free dessert. - At one point during the service, it seemed like front of house kept playing with the lights and turning them on and off for like 5-10min. Pretty minor, but definitely distracting. - The spacing between tables where we sat was a little tight. So when the table next to us got seated halfway through our meal, as they were making their way to the inside seat, they ended up knocking over my wife's drink. Not the fault of the restaurant, and it's cold so everyone has their winter coats on, but definitely felt a little cramped (but not like sardines, pun intended). Staff quickly replaced the drink though which was nice. Overall, I really liked Strange Delight! Had a couple quirks that made dinner service interesting, but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who lives in Fort Greene area or seafood lovers in general. NYE dinner Strange Delight was delightful! We unfortunately were unable to sit in the interior dining room and sat at by the bar instead. It was still lovely seeing how some of the food were put together. We started off with chargrillled oysters as a palate starter. Slightly different than my experience in NOLA but tasty nonetheless. Then had the spareribs which had a lovely kick. It's mouthwatering savory, and we left nothing but the bone. Next came the gumbo. I was so surprised by how filling it was. It was interesting that this restaurant does not have a number to call but they do have an automated system to confirm your online reservation. We got a good mix of food: - cured scallops - charbroiled oysters with breadcrumbs - swordfish belly - creole blackfish - Hokkaido uni The food came out pretty fast - one by one. The Hokkaido uni had too much onions that it over powered the uni. The rest of the dishes were good but nothing special. For the price you would think each dish would come with more components but it was a bit disappoint. The one dish that I thought was unique was the swordfish belly. The belly was so soft it felt like you were eating a firm tofu. Each meal always ends with a complimentary bread pudding as desserts. The bread pudding was actually the highlight of the entire meal. I just did a walk-in and they sat me in what felt like a walk-in section.. it was kind of awkward, bc everyone was sitting in the back. The service was good and very friendly. I love counter seating but since there were 3 of us we chose a standard table for easy socializing. I had the Having Fun since 1933 and it was a great choice. It was tasty and strong. This spot has become one of my favorite seafood restaurants. Everything on the menu was so good! We came for lunch and ordered a shrimp loaf with a side of watercress salad to share as well as two of the seafood & three that got served on a fun lunch tray. I love all the salad sides (watercress salad, Chinese broccoli salad, and shrimp salad). They were all amazing and it's awesome that they add dill to the salads which makes them taste super good. I also love the smoked fish dip and the blacken catfish. The ambiance at the restaurant was great and well lit. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this place! I came once for regular dinner and once for HH. I think HH drinks are the most worth. Upon walking in you'll see the bar and a few high tops, but the main seating area is in the back. HH is only available 5-7PM in the front area. Oysters are $2 during HH. There is a seafoo; tower HH deal but I didn't think it worth the price for oysters at least. The oysters are on the smaller side. The loaves are their take on poboys. While $27 is pricey for a catfish poboy, I've enjoyed it the 2 times I've had it (and split with another person) The shrimp basket is also delicious but only 5-6 shrimp for the whole thing. I think the $15 martinis during HH is the most valuable thing on the menu. I think there are 2 restrooms. Service is friendly, and they've given free bread pudding dessert the two times I've come. The blue fin tuna was delicious but is a 2 bite dish for $22. I recommend for the taste but only if price is not a concern. The trout dish was delicious with extremely flavored crackers. The fry basket was good but they didn't have enough catfish or shrimp in my opinion. It felt primarily like fries. The oysters were good! Came by for the good morning cafe popup which is from Monday to Thursdays 8-1:30pm. The hours make me crazy because I work in queens so there's absolutely no way in hell I could ever make it down unless I have the day off. I came by one day close to 11/12 and everything was pretty much sold out but I was able to get beignets. Staff was INCREDIBLE. The gentleman at the counter was soooo kind and answered all my probing questions about the best time to come for certain menu items and if popup hours or days might be extended. He was super helpful. Basically this popup will be continuing but hours and days will remain the same because both popup and the restaurant won't be able to run activities at the same time, which makes complete sense. Beignets were about five/six bucks for a handful and were fresh out the fryer and heaped with powdered sugar. They were definitely good but not super memorable admittedly but I will be back to try the restaurant menu and ONE DAY try the other breakfast menu items!!! read more

I had a few friends over from Atlanta the other night and they wanted some seafood so I decided to take them to Strange Delight. This was also my first time too. On the walk in it just looks like a small bar. We all looked at eachother like "where are they going to seat us?" I came during lunch time which had a smaller and more structured menu, but still had what I was seeking out. I started with the Curious George. A rum and absinthe based cocktail with a bold licorice flavor. Served in a tallish glass with crushed ice which mellows out the licorice especially halfway through the drink. I robust cocktail list with lots of creative signature drinks plus great bartenders that will make any of the classics. I ate the fried catfish sandwich with a side of corn bread. Catfish was savory and crispy. It was complimented by what I thought was the star of the sandwich - a banana pepper slaw. The sourness and acidity balanced out perfectly. Served on a thin milk bread. The corn bread was superb. Super crispy on the outside while crumbly on the inside. It was served with a sweet, whipped butter (I believe it was a brown sugar butter). Service at the bar was excellent. Bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. There is a gorgeous counter at the kitchen plus another nice counter at the bar. Plenty of spacious tables throughout perfect for groups of two to four. Sandwich and side was $28 and the drink was $22. The food here is pricey but, correct me if I'm wrong, a lot of the stuff here is just not served in New York. The hush puppies were better than most, if not the best, hush puppies I've had including the south when visiting (native New Yorker here). The chargrilled oysters were really, really good. Would be top tier if they'd used gulf oysters but whatever is freshest! Really enjoyed the shrimp loaf sandwich as well. The seafood tower is pricey but that fish dip with the spicy crackers is addicting. Even that endive salad was honestly way better than it needed to be. A complimentary piece of delicious bread pudding was a great way to end the meal! read more

Made a reservation a week ahead for a Friday night and had an amazing meal here! One of my favorite restaurants that I went to this year. The food is fantastic and the service is exemplary. I tried: + Having fun since 1933 cocktail + Classic gin martini + Curious George cocktail + charbroiled oysters + fried oyster loaf + smoked fish dip + fried shrimp basket + the salad + bread pudding My absolute favorite dish was the fish dip, followed by the charbroiled oysters (which didn't only taste like cheese and salt for once!) and shrimp basket. Would get the oyster loaf again, too. Bread pudding was also incredible and it's such a nice touch that it's complimentary. Cocktails were really solid. Finally, they let us move to the bar in the back to finish our drinks (and we befriended Chris the bartender). Most popular places will just kick you out in order to turn the table but they couldn't have been more accommodating here. read more

Had a lovely special occasion birthday dinner here. The drinks were excellent, starting with some stellar martinis. Oysters Rockefeller were sold out, so we "settled" for some excellent raw oysters and some charbroiled ones as well, which were nicely succulent. We shared several small and large plates here as well, starting with a smoked fish dip that was just exceptional--rich, smoky, all sorts of umami--just an incredibly delightful snack--and the fish entrees--both the roasted salmon an the blackened swordfish belly--were exceptionally cooked and well crafted--particularly liked the salmon, with the sweet punch of the grapes. The only thing I didn't really care for was the milk bread sandwich, which they sold us on. Now I'm no native, but I've been to New Orleans many a time, have close friends who have lived down there, and have never heard of milk bread being a thing in the land of the po' boy. It sounds like something Charlie Kelly would invent, and in practice feels like an excuse to throw a sandwich on fancier Wonder Bread but charge $27 for it. Thin bread, a soggy and odd sandwich with unappealing iceberg lettuce--a rare mis-step here. Again, not sure what the Big Easy analogue is here, but if it exists, I feel like they could do a better job elevating these sandwich offerings. The setting here is indeed a delight (not just a clever restaurant name!). The front room (where we sat) has high tops and counter seating reminiscent of a sushi bar, but as you venture further walk back, it gets darker, and there is a small middle room with more standard and intimate table seating, but then the back has a lovely bar and more tables--an extension of the dining area sure, but felt pretty unique--felt almost like three distinct, unique, and cool different restaurants. Finally, be warned, while there are a few other options, it's probably not a viable or desirable option for anything but drinks if you are not a seafood fan. Far from an issue for me, but one of my friends who is not a big seafood fan had a few sides from the potato and veg side options but probably left kind of hungry! read more

I ordered delivery from Strange Delight last night and the shrimp po'boy was delicious. The shrimp were still plump and juicy (even after delivery) and the bread is amazing. They also gave me a piece of their bread pudding (I think); whatever it was, it was delicious. I can't wait to try the restaurant in person. read more

Very cute new spot with an interesting twist on New Orleans seafood. Came to have the seafood and three lunch with a friend -- we had a reservation on a Sunday at 1 pm but seemed like there were empty tables for walkins -- and overall everything was very tasty. While the dishes do include fried fish and sides reminiscent of indulgent NOLA staples nothing felt heavy or flat out "unhealthy" -- even the fried shrimp I had were non greasy with a crispy cornmeal crust and more shrimp than batter by far. The fish dip is incredible, herby and smoky and perfectly accompanied by spiced fried saltines (genius idea, would eat a bag on their own). Standout sides: the broccolini salad (with nutritional yeast, a bit of a healthier twist on broccoli salad) and the amazing sweet potato w pecan (not TOO sweet -- only wish there was more of it!). Only side that was a bit lackluster was the tamaki gold rice, which came out a bit cold and tasted and looked like...plain old white rice. Would get extra fish dip next time or double the sweet potatoes! Desserts are individual little portions, sort of like pickup hors d'oeuvres -- we wanted to try the cinnamon bun but they were out of it, so had the cream cheese creole tart, a nice little bite. Overall a nice chill place for lunch and for a seafood fan like myself a nice departure from other places in the 'hood! read more

Had this placed bookmarked forever finally got to go after my hair appointment so glad that I did!! However look closely or you'll miss it!! The menu is very simple yet constructed well wish they would add a gumbo dish just for that extra Nola touch. I have bbq oysters and char broiled with the shrimp basket not pictured, the bartenders in the back 10/10 and helpful they had this good one similar to Prosecco but sweeter I need a bottle. The vibes everything about this place is just will be back to try the loaf sandwich!! read more

Delightful! Big fan of the food, the ambiance, and the interior decor! Lunch is a fun option because you can select the "seafood and three" platter which is your choice of a seafood main and 3 sides. The fried shrimp are fried beautifully on the outside and succulent AF inside. The catfish nuggets were a softer fry on the outside, not as crispy as the fried shrimp, but the catfish did not taste fishy! Big fan of the Mac and cheese, which is tiny elbow pasta and had saucy school lunch Mac and cheese vibes, in the best way possible. Collards were a banger, and actually all the veggies were great- Chinese broccoli salad was fresh with a nice crunch (bonus protein from nutritional yeast!), and the watercress salad had nice umami to it from the dill and parsley. The red beans were savory and the fried potato were surprisingly thin and delicious (we were expecting wedges, but think thick chips but not crunchy). Also shoutout to the NA martini, which was delicious (but full disclosure, while it's reminiscent of a dirty martini combined with martini with a twist, it was much lighter and more refreshing than either, and not really an oomph mocktail, if you know what I mean). The restaurant is beautiful and I'm obsessed with the 100% yellow bathroom, which is such a vibe. The music was slightly loud and if you get seated in the front of the restaurant during the winter, beware that it gets pretty chilly whenever anyone goes in and out of the restaurant! read more

I've been following Strange Delight on Instagram for about a year now, so when we visited the city of course we had to stop by! I was excited to be in town for the last week of their Live Laugh Loaf series and the Jaeki Cho mackerel sandwich did not disappoint. Also loved the crispy fries and crab fried rice special that we ordered, and the free piece of bread pudding at the end was such a nice touch! Would love to explore more of the menu the next time we're in town :) read more
