I have recently decided to make it "policy" to visit any NJ eatery twice before reviewing, since so many subsequent visits end in disappointment, or a WTF? moment. Not so for St Eve's. We came here a second time for an early New Years Eve dinner and we were very impressed with the quality of food, service and consistency of dining experience. This coming right after dining at two different Michelin star restaurants during our Xmas trip home to California. Given the night in question, it was always going to be a Prix Fixe menu, but there were several options for each course. Each course was a 4 out of 5 in terms of flavor and quality.... which for Jerz is pretty damn awesome, particularly at the $70 pp price point. BYOB without corkage, and the interesting people watching (some 60 year old guy complaining about the "bitch that unfriended me" from Facebook being the icing on the cake) made for an entertaining evening and I would be hard pressed to recommend a better restaurant in Bergen Count (and therefore NJ as a whole) to take the spouse / significant other for a romantic meal, with good food and great service. I don't ever advocate coming to visit New Jersey, but if you come, come to this place! read more

I stumbled on this restaurant when I found out Chef Steve Christanson was opening up a restaurant in NJ after his stint at The Citrus Grille. My friends and I went to celebrate the summer. We ordered two appetizers: The filet mignon with egg, and the grilled oysters. I don't even LIKE oysters, but it was DIVINE! The filet mignon is reminiscent of a haute version of breakfast in my early age. Service was very attentive. We ordered four dishes: Hangar steak, leg of lamb, salmon with artichoke and black truffles, and the chicken with foie gras. I had the hangar steak and it was tender, and juicy and it was extremely satisfying. What I loved about the dinner menu is that you can still order a small plate if you wanted to order more of a tapas than a complete 20-bite meal. My friends enjoyed the rest of their dinners, especially the salmon and chicken and we were ready for dessert... We ordered the root beer float and butterscotch pudding. The root beer float was sweet and oh so satisfying on a hot day and the butterscotch pudding reminds me of my grandmother's, but more sophisticated. I highly recommend St. Eve's. It was a pleasure to share that special food with my friends, and my experience was above and beyond what I had at Citrus Grille. The decor was absolutely stunning and I felt like I was at home with intimacy. This place will only get better in time! I look forward to being a repeat customer! read more

Came here for dinner reservations on Valentine's Day with their special menu. Ambiance and presentation are on point. Prices are a bit high, but you get what you pay for in a place like this. Food was pretty solid for the price, but not amazing. Then again, that may be down to the dish in question. If I find myself here again, I can see myself being satisfied with whatever else I would get. As far as date night spots go, not a bad pick at all. read more

Good food but quite pricy. Service was fine. Waiters and staff were all friendly and polite. Scenery was very rustic and gave off a barnhouse kind of vibe. The food tasted fresh and delicious. Ordered the special braised shortrib which came with mushrooms, mashed pitatoes, turnip, goat cheese and veggies. Tasted pretty good but regretted my decision instantly when I tried the duck which my father had ordered. For dessert I had the flourless chocolate mousse cake with mint chip ice cream it tasted okay. Overall the quality of food here was good. I may come back some time. read more

Great little spot! Love the interior whoever designed it has great taste. As for the food... Everything we had was amazing. Fresh Mozzarella with the most perfect tomatoes ever.... Grilled octopus, ahi tuna and filet mignon ravioli!!! Saved room for dessert too. Creme brûlée that surprised me. The top was just a little hard and the custard was warm!! AMAZING! Once I called to make reservations, they told me where to park and its BYOB (there is a store right next door you can easily buy it from). They also called the day before to remind me of our reservation. Once we got there, we were immediately seated and the server poured our wine for us. We had one of the specials which were the oysters as well as the filet mignon ravioli- both were perfectly cooked and had a fresh taste. For our entrees we had the scallops with shrimp and I got the duck. The food was coked just right. All the flavors came together really well. Oh and the music was a plus! Perfect for a date night! Not impressed and not returning to this less than average farm to table style BYOB in downtown HoHoKus. Made a reservation a month before Mother's Day and had to wait almost 30 min after the reservation time to be seated. Many appetizers/entrees were already sold out during the prime dinner hour (6.30pm). My appetizer, spicy beef rolls with a creamy avocado wasabi sauce on shredded cabbage were just horrible. Over cooked to the point of a dry overly crunchy texture, dried out meat, with flavor that consisted of just heat. I've had better Totinos snack rolls. Main course was Opa (Hawaiian moon fish) that was cooked well and passable and tasty , just too much going on with respect to flavor composition. Dessert was another disaster... strawberry rubarb cobbler with ice cream. Imagine, if you will, hot preserves sprinkled with a scant amount of dry oatmeal and a scoop of bad tasting cinnamon ice cream. Totally Inedible. Bottom line: Too many great places to dine in this neck of Jersey to ever try again. read more

Open space that feels both modern and rustic at the same time. Started with a sweetbread appetizer with crispy polenta and balsamic onions, fantastic flavor but only a tiny amount of sweetbreads, which was disappointing. Roasted beef shank main was phenomenal, portion size was ample and the dish simply worked well together. Newly renovated liquor store in the same building makes BYO even easier. Entrance is in the back, which can be confusing but is adjacent to ample parking. Will return! read more

Whenever we are thinking about going out for din I always add in a quick.... "How about St. Eve's?" I absolutely love the cozy feel and trendy decor along with the food of course. We once asked if the barn doors were just for display to which the server opened the doors and showed us that there was another room of tables inside. They should leave it open all the time! The sophisticated menu changes often but always remains small. The dishes aren't for everyone and puts some items together that don't work in your head but work on the plate. Go in with an open mind and try EVERYTHING. I don't even like kale but they had this kale salad with fruit and other trinkets in an amazing dressing that is my favorite salad on earth. I never liked scallops when I was a kid and gave them a second try here in a lemony white sauce -delish! The filet mignon ravs are always a winner with others although I'm personally not crazy about them. Portions are tiny so smaller groups of 2-4 work best in my opinion. Overall everything feels and tastes fresh with an authentic farm to table feel to it. Plus there's lots of tables outside in the summer. Go out and find this hidden gem. read more

I have had a few lovely meals here, but my last one was superlative. This restaurant just keeps getting better. The hostess and staff were friendly and attentive. Our salad appetizer was a wonderful combination of beets, greens and cheese. The veal special entrée was mouth-wateringly yummy! Also, the décor is lovely -- tasteful. As a native from South Jersey, I look forward to visiting my (90-year-old) grandma with my mom in her childhood neighborhood. We typically order Chinese take-out or visit the local Diner. But this past Saturday, my grandma was in the mood for picking up a good bottle of wine and having a nice dinner with her girls. She had been to St. Eve's twice before with my aunt from Virginia (side note: the two visits were several months a part and the waitress remembered my aunt and grandma!) The ambiance, decor, and wait staff were all fantastic! We showed up right when they opened for dinner (5:00 PM sharp!) and they warmly welcomed us, even without a reservation! Mom ordered the burger--it was good, but she wished she was more adventurous with her selection. Grandma ordered the half portion of the scallops and ate every bite! She always says she doesn't really have a sophisticated palate but when it comes to her favorite thing to eat, she knows the good from the great and she loved it! I ordered the pasta dish with succulent shrimp and clams in a garlic lemon sauce with garlic bread crumbs, half portion. When it first came out, I almost laughed at how small the portion was. I didn't expect colossal portions, given the place is refined and upscale, but since I held out all day for this meal I expected it to be bigger. NONETHELESS, I was thrilled with every bite and very full when it was gone! The papardelle pasta was a perfect pick for the dish and really satisfied my hunger. We all split an icecream cookie sandwich for desert and really enjoyed it! Of course, getting to spend quality time with my favorite people in the world is usually a wonderful time, but the St. Eve's experience made it a stand-out memory for me and my family. read more

Went for the first time last night with friends who highly recommended place. They were right on the money with this! Decorated plain but elegant. Waiter (whose name I forgot) was knowledgable and friendly. I had a kale salad special for my appetizer that was amazing. Two kinds of kale, Brussels sprouts, shaved Parmesan and war, bacon dressing, delicious! Husband had a grilled shrimp appetizer off the menu and enjoyed it. For my entree I had the lamb sirloin special which was out of this world. Seasoned and cooked perfectly, it was like butter. My husband had filet mignon which was also cooked to perfection. Portions are very generous. We shared a peanut butter mousse in brownie tart for dessert. Work of art and if you're a peanut butter/chocolate addict like myself, this was amazing! We forgot how good this place is. The meal we had last night with friends was an A+ experience. The meal was very close to what we were used to at the Citrus Grille. We will back sooner than later. They have gone to a smaller menu selections - with super interesting specials. Very interesting blends of flavors and textures. Arrived to a packed house and found that it was well deserved. This was my first visit to St. Eve's and I will be back. The appitizer special "Filet Ravioli" was spectacular. Our main courses consisted of an amazingly good seafood special that consisted of Sea Bass & crab meat in a lemon butter sauce as well as a "melt on your tongue" Veal with mushrooms and crab meat in a brown butter sauce. This restaurant would have scored 5 stars had not a friend's Yellow Fin Tuna dish not been bland. The first thing I noticed was the decor. It was beautiful! I wanted everything for my house! I had the house salad which was a colorful medley of seasonal produce, the dressing was delish, it had beets, grapefruit and mesculen greens. For my entree I had scallops over a potato purée and truffle essence. Outrageous. The dessert menu didn't wow me, but we got a fresh cookie plate anyway. It was ok. Went recently for dinner with a group, seating was tight for a group bigger than 8. We really enjoyed the appetizers. We had one of the specials, the goat cheese fritter and the mussels. The kitchen was slammed you could tell. It took longer than usually for apps which was a little annoying. Dinner was delicious however some of the dinners didn't come out on time. Went back to St Eve's last night. Our service was wonderful and no wait for a table which on pervious visits we always had to wait. I just wasn't impressed with the food this time. I had a red snapper special and the fish itself was very good but there was just way too much going on on the plate. My husband had the duck and it was over done and the same with all the vegetables on the plate. Our apps of stuffed figs and carpaccio were really good and was a delicious apple crisp. Wonderful dinner. Chic inside decor but we ate on the outside patio on a beautiful evening. I had the crab cake appetizer which was fantastic. Laura had the warm peach salad special which she very much enjoyed. Had the flat iron steak which was cooked perfectly rare with a nice crust. Laura had the soft shell special and raved about it. Service *** Capable with no glaring errors does enough to get by. Food *** It feels like they are trying too hard. Every plate had so many different textures and flavors that I found it hard to really enjoy anything. Goat Cheese Fritter appetizer comes buried under greens on top of what I think was an eggplant coponata drizzled with balsamic. The goat cheese looked pink so we guessed there was Sundried Tomatoes in it. The Mussels were abundant but tiny and the Green Curry sauce had a strange chunky texture. The Filet Mignon Ravioli just tasted like Pot Roast. Value *** BYOB which keeps the cost down but the entrees get expensive quickly. $38 for a steak (I didn't order) seems like NYC price level. For two with tip $90. Overall *** We hoped it would be great but did not find that to be the case. Jammed together tables, over-prepared food, pricey makes it just another restaurant. read more

Had a wonderful celebratory dinner on a Saturday night. All of our appetizers and entrees were excellent. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the venison special melted in your mouth. The flourless chocolate cake and mint ice cream was not as expected. It's not your store bought ice cream. It was home made with fresh mint giving it a mild fresh mint flavor. I was surprised to see reviews that patrons were rushed. Our service was exceptional. It was busy as usual for a Saturday and by no means were we rushed. The server was very attentive, polite and friendly. We were also surprised that there was no corking fee for our wine. Yes it's expensive. For those with complaints about the price, look at the website menu to get an idea. We knew what to expect and a wonderful dinner. read more

With everything going on and staying in quarantine for 2 weeks we needed a treat and we were so happy to see the St. Eve's was open and doing curbside or delivery. We opted for the delivery and everything came quickly and was absolutely delicious. Everything was packaged up nicely and the driver was protected, had gloves on and kept his social distance. I couldn't have been any happier and that was before we even started to eat. We placed a big order off their new menu, got the steamed lobster which came with French fries, slaw, clarified butter all in separate containers as well as fresh grilled corn on the cob. The presentation for delivery was amazing. Also ordered the fried oyster salad, lightly fired oysters and there were a lot of them too! Our favorite red & white endive salad with apples, candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles, dressing on the side. The pecan crusted chicken breast was cooked perfectly! It had a crispy exterior and was super moist inside. Cant forget the Crabcake, now my wife is from Maryland and this is her favorite local spot! My first experience at St Eve's was with a group of co-workers for a work dinner. I was very nervous to take my co-workers here, as they are a group of foodies and I had never been here before. I had heard many great things about St. Eve's, and having lived in Manhattan for years with many of the worlds best restaurants at my finger tips, I was in charge of choosing the restaurant. So, on my recommendation all 8 of us were on our way. The initial thoughts of the menu were not fantastic, however once the dishes came out, everyone was extremely pleased. The flavors of each dish were robust and left us wanting more. The service was friendly and answered all questions that were thrown at them in regards to the menu. I've since returned twice, each time taking a friend that had never been there. I haven't had one complaint and am looking forward to my next experience at St. Eve's. read more

I really wanted to give this place a great review but my experience here was not very good. The apps were the highlight as we had the mussels (thai style), half portion of the filet ravioli, and the Jumbo Alaskan King Crab Timbale. All three were good but the Timbale was more of a salad than anything else. Now for the entrees. My wife had the ribeye steak and I had the Veal special. The steak was slathered in blue cheese and it was too overpowering. You could barely taste the steak. The veal was just meh. Probably not going back with all the restaurant options nearby. read more

Way before Steve (the Chef & Owner) was named one of the "Best Chefs in America" by the first-ever industry peer review guide to chefs, his food was great. We just had a small (10 adult, 3 child) event at his restaurant and I have nothing but good things to say. The premium party menu we chose was delicious...from a shrimp with pasta appetizer to a citrus salmon entree. On top of that, the staff was great. They were so attentive and weren't disturbed by our kids breaking a a plate, or screaming every now and again. Luckily we had the place to ourselves since we booked the first possible time for a lunch event. Other people started to come in during our dessert, which was also great...a Flourless Chocolate Cake, but by that time we were almost ready to go. I've been a few times with my wife for dinner, and would also recommend St. Eve's for a night out. read more

This is my first time. We had an early dinner and the service started out fine but got worse thru the night as the place became very crowded. My starter of oysters was not a winner; while the oysters were excellent the scallop civiche was overpowered by too much pickled ginger. My lamb was perfectly cooked but the vegetable 'pasta' was overpowered by too much pesto and the sweet potato gratin was undercooked. My husbands short ribs were very good. Dessert was untimely-one item took 21 mins to be served so by the time we got the late item we were done with our tea and coffee. Getting refills was difficult-no offer we had to grab a person for the coffee. I never got my tea. Tea was a bag in hot water-for these prices i would expect better. We do plan to go back and try it again and I will try it for lunch too before passing permanent judgement on this new place. read more

I hope the owners are reading this because this restaurant is so pretty - we want it to succeed! We've eaten there twice now along with friends... both times the appetizers were simply as wonderful as can be. However.... both times the entree's were just ok. I love to order fish and found the sauces for the fish (salmon and tuna) were just too "rich" for fish and probably better suited for meat dishes. This was our fourth or fifth visit and probably our last. Each time there is always something amiss. Previous visit had a dish with fried plantain crisps--tasted rancid, other dishes were off. Service always seems to be an issue. This time the menu has a starter listed as Lobster and Crab Timbale. Every definition of a timbale is some food item COOKED in a shell or mold. This was a ice cream scooper of the seafood in the middle of the plate a la chicken salad plate in a diner. Asked server what was the base for the scallop and shrimp entrée--was it sautéed, oil, etc? Server says yes, it is in olive oil. When presented, swimming in cream. Mentioned to the server you never said anything about cream and he responds he did, but 4 people at table never heard him say that. Asked if it was possible to replace with grilled swordfish but server says, that is a special so it will take a while. Grilled fish takes a while??!! So kept dish and scrapped off sauce. Ordered dessert, 1 cappuccino, 2 espressos. Never brings cappuccino. Must request again after 20 mins--server says he did not hear. Attention to detail is missing across the board. Menu on website is not current--if you are going to post menu keep it current. Under the News window on website it has Father's Day and Mother's Day listing from 2 years ago. Same thing for the special Rose wine dinner. It is a shame because setting and interior are lovely and BYOB is a positive. So wish this was a consistent experience. read more

We went there a couple of weeks ago for an early dinner with friends as a party of 4 at 6pm. My wife and I ordered appetizers of Mussels and Beet Salad. Both were very good. The Mussels were in this delicious light cream sauce but they didn't provide any quality bread to enjoy the juices. it came with 1 slice of crusty baguette the size of a silver dollar. I asked for more bread and they brought out dinner rolls of white bread. Not terrible but not acceptable for what I was eating. For the entree I had the Short Ribs and my wife had the scallops. Both were cooked perfectly and tasted very good. The problem I have with this place is the service. The waiters were inattentive and just stood by the door chatting and looking around. There were only 3 tables filled so it wasn't like the place was packed. When you're paying 16 dollars for an appetizer and $25 for a main course you would expect quality service. Example: They didn't clear the table as we finished a plate and didn't even clear the table before they brought the main course. We had to pick up the app plates ourselves to make room for the main course. If the prices were $8 and $12 I would be OK with this but not at these prices. Until they get the service down I won't be going back. read more

4.5 stars but i'll round up! We love BYOB restaurants and it is rare to find one serving a continetal gourmet menu, most all are Italian. Prices are on the high side but they need it to survive with no liquior revenue. Salads, fish entrees all excelent in taste and presentation. read more

This place was magnificent. I wish I had written a review sooner because seriously, I wish I could remember everything. We had a mushroom/goat cheese crepe thing that was to die for, and my husband had a homemade pasta and seafood dish. Seriously, the place is gorgeous, food is delicious. It's pricey though, and the crowd is leaning towards 30's and up. I would go for lunch one day if you want less crowded and to experience the food. read more
