I definitely think that just Janice is worth four stars. All the food was quality and the service was very nice. The location is very cute. Not quite sure why this place has 3 1/2 stars that they do deserve a full four. We ordered The burger, which was really good and we also ordered the short rib sandwich which was excellent and it came with the truffle fries. They really did a good job with the truffle fries because they actually tasted like truffle. I think a lot of places skimp out on the truffle and just Janice did not. The only thing I would say they could benefit from is offering free refills on the coffee because that's kind of standard and a lot of places. read more

This is one of my very favorite restaurants in Bergen county. The food is delicioous and always fresh. The menu is mixed -- offering incredible "comfort" food (i.e., meat loaf, short ribs, delicious crabcakes, fish tacos") along with chef's daily culinary specials. This has the look of a diner, with small but cozy booths and a nice front area with tables. You never feel crowded and the staff is just so attentive and eager to help you choose your favorite meals. Still love this place after all these years! Had Sunday brunch for the first time this past weekend. I've only been for dinner in the past. Going to bring my family back next weekend, brunch was delicious, plenty of options for the whole family, salads, eggs, sandwiches. I had a nice meal at Just Janice. The outdoor seating area was comfortable and the servers were very attentive and friendly. Ordered: Southwest chicken sandwich- $17- soft ciabatta, grilled chicken, cheddar, bacon and chipotle mayo. Very tasty! Asked for no cilantro pesto since I have an aversion to cilantro. Came with fries too. Avocado toast with smoked salmon- $21- mashed avocado, with smoked salmon and a fried egg on multigrain toast. It had a good amount of avocado on it. It was served with a side salad. It was a little expensive but I understand that the price was due to the premium ingredients used. It was a nice meal! Just Janice is located in the center of Ho Ho Kus with easy street parking. We came mid week and although it started quiet, by the end of dinner the place was bustling. The staff are super friendly and there are a lot of different specials. We started with the truffle fries with Gorgonzola dip. The fries were thin and crispy and the dip had a nice flavor and texture. For entrees we both did the special, I did the Lobster stuff ravioli and my friend did the half chicken with brussel sprouts and potato's. Everything had lots of flavor, and I like that my Raviolis were not over done with sauce. For desser we each got the special which was blueberry crumble with ice cream and whipped cream. The dessert was delicious, and if I wasn't ready to pass out from being so full I would've ordered more. The only downside is that the restaurant had large tables of middle aged women who obviously never left their house because they continued to shriek and cackle with laughter through out the second half of our dinner. I won't hold it against Just Janice though, they certainly couldn't help that these women didn't have manners. Can't wait to come back! read more

This has become one of my favorite restaurants. Love the atmosphere -- although it gets quite loud. Love the decor. A counter reminiscent of a soda shop. I can almost taste the egg cream. The food? THE BEST EVER. Love whatever risotto Janice is serving. Perfectly done and just delicious. Fish tacos? You betcha' baby -- fresh and you can have them grilled or sautéed. Crab cakes? Amazing -- freshest ever! Ravioli?? GORGEOUS. I can't gush enough. Well -- the Desserts are killers. Save some appetite for THAT. I highly recommend Just Janice. As a cheap breakfast diner-like experience this place would earn 5 stars. They are confused about their identity. It kind of wants to be an upscale dining experience that can charge outrageous prices, but the atmosphere falls far short. The food, while good, is far from the excellence I would expect for the prices you pay. $200 for brunch is insane at a place like this. $3/plate cake cutting fee? Give us the knife, we'll cut the cake thank you. 20% gratuity in tiny print for a party of 5? Is this your first business? Restaurants typically impose gratuities on parties of 6+. Check your bill before handing over your credit card. Ownership doesn't believe in the "customer is always right" mentality of owning a business or working in sales. It's also way too crowded. They sat us half in the walkway which meant the waitstaff kept bumping our seats. Cut your prices by a third and it might be a better value. read more

First time here and found it to be great. We were with a large party, and our server was very accommodating since a couple people arrived late. She was very attentive and knew the menu well. The ambiance was chill and nice but not too fancy. BYOB was also a plus, enabled us to splurge on the delicious appetizers. The clams oreganata were especially good. For my entree I had the pork chop. I seldom order pork but I'm glad I did. It was perfectly crusted and crispy on outside and juicy on the inside. This place is awesome in every way. *The Vibes: fantastic. It's rare to find a place that feels like home, but this place does it. It's quaint, quiet, and the same employees are always there so you become a "regular" pretty quickly. * The Staff: everyone who works here is very nice and attentive. They seem to all handle every table, I'm not sure we've ever had one dedicated waiter (which I'm perfectly fine with). This ensures that if you ever need something, someone will pretty quickly get around to you and take care of it. * The Food: the food here is just amazing. We arrived within 5 minutes and were seated promptly. Unfortunately that is where our experience ended. We were given no menus, no drinks, no water and no service. We were left at the back table for just over 20 minutes before we decided to just get up and leave because it didn't appear they would ever remember that they seated us. read more

I've been here many times. Another couple and I went tonight and we got the bill and there was a$10 charge for bread. I've never had a charge here or at any other Italian restaurant for bread. When I think of Janice I think of two things. The girl who dated Ross on and off for a few years on "Friends" and a restaurant that tries to be New York Times rated. While Janice was funny on Friends, it was disappointing as a restaurant. Looking at my experience one year later reminds me of my immediate feelings then as well as my feelings 12 months later; the same. Entrees at NYC pricing with the amateur technique of a home cook. A party of eight at 6 PM on a Saturday night. Who goes to dinner this early; my in laws that's who. While I am not a fan of early dinner reservations, I made the journey from Astoria to Ho Ho Kus for this family event. Our table was situated in the front of the restaurant with seating east to west. Now I have to mention this because the width of the restaurant is maybe 25 feet wide. The length of our table and the booth by the wall, left about 2 feet wide space to walk by from the front to the back. Think about it, 24 inches between the end of both tables for servers, busboys, food runners and guests to walk by. Every time someone did, my wife's left shoulder and my right was bumped into in one form or the other of a butt, an arm, a hip. Someones body just hit us through the 2.5 hours of this annoying experience. Now, that was my highlight of the evening. As the floor manager (I believe to be the owner) preceded to greet every guest from behind us. Every time someone walked in, he would greet them with a warm welcome. Dude, walk around from the counter to the front door and give them that warm welcome. Let me tell you, I met everyone in Ho Ho Kus that night. Door open; hi there; come on in; everyone in our party just stopped and looked; 2.5 hours of this. Entrees lacked the imagination of an experience chef. Average at best, zero presentation and the most simplistic entrees imaginable. Rib eye served with Pomme Frittes was as inspiring as the same steak bought at the Shop Rite down the road and served at home. Visually unappealing with beef and fries on a plate. While the lamb chops were cooked to perfection the sauce was a molasses of sweetness. A saturated sauce that overpowered the essence of the lamb. The brussels sprouts was again amateurish. Something that could have been executed at a higher level. Over cooked, but still hard. Again the imagination, did not do justice to a lobster bisque that was just liquid in a bowl. Presentation did just that; it lacked presentation. Overall, Janice is the little engine that wants to play with the big leagues, but lacks the imagination of simple entrees executed right. If your looking for simple American entrees with NYC pricing. Janice has a niche, as evident with a full restaurant on a Saturday night. The balance of atmosphere and food falls short for me. I am a fan of simplistic food and entrees, but execution should be at a high level. Tip Parties of 5 or more may be seated in wrong locations. Restaurant does not do a good job with large groups. Tip Mr. Owner not cool to ask a party of eight to leave immediately after spending a good dollar in your establishment. I mean, check paid and 30 seconds later telling the host "party has to leave". Four of us ate dinner here Saturday night (3/8/14) and while the place had a good vibe about it, the food & service were not up to par unfortunately. We started out with the appetizer special - artichoke heart bottoms w/bechamel sauce & calamari & beans. Both plates were plunked down on the table with no serving spoons or plates for us to put the food on. We flagged the waiter down who then brings 3 plates instead of 4! The artichoke appetizer had no seasoning & the calamari was like eating rubberbands. The rest of the calamari dish was ok. All night the waiter was disengaged and not attentive at all. The bus boy was wonderful - he should be promoted immediately! For dinner, the steak was the best entree - really good. The cheeseburger that someone ordered medium rare came out medium well, the pork special was bland and the fish taco's hardly had any fish in them - all lettuce. The rolls that are given at dinner are excellent. We called the manager over to explain our disappointment but he did not seem to care and nothing was taken off the bill and OK that's fine but then offer a free dessert or something. Overall, iIt was clear that the owners were not around & that the wait staff do not put pride in their work. I dine out a lot and I have not witnessed a restaurant that had such terrible service or food that was uneven - uneven - I mean - some things were good and some things were just terrible. A shame because I dined at this restaurant a couple of times a few years ago and I remember it being A LOT better. read more
