They take in items that would otherwise end up in landfills and make them available to people who can repurpose them. Resource Depot furthers its mission to leave the planet a little cleaner through workshops, events, and community partnerships. Their Pam Sartory GalleRE showcases local artists' upcycled artwork, while the Materials Marketplace and TrewasuRE Boutique offer repurposed items for sale. Their goal is simple yet impactful: provide materials to those who can use them while promoting sustainable practices and creative expression. Over the past 25 years, Resource Depot has kept an estimated 95+ tons of materials out of landfills, all while raising environmental awareness. As an educator with a limited--or sometimes non-existent--budget, a place like Resource Depot is a lifeline. Schools often can't provide enough supplies for students, and what little remains in the resource closet has to stretch for weeks or months. In the thrift area, I found an incredible variety of affordable items: games, holiday decorations, books, home goods, art supplies, faux florals, ribbons, artwork, and more. The paint alone was worth the trip! If you want to see a child light up, just offer them the chance to paint--fortunately, they had the Crayola washable kind I needed. Shopping is flexible and budget-friendly: a small bin is $5, a large bin is $10, and if you purchase eight large bins, you get one free. Teachers also receive a 15% discount on regularly priced items (not bins). These are prices anyone can afford. Resource Depot is truly a gem, and Palm Beach County is lucky to have such a creative, sustainable, and community-focused resource.

Antique Row…read morebegan as a handful of antique businesses that sprang up in the 1970's in an area that had been on the decline. By 1979 there were seven dealers on the 3700 block of Dixie Highway. Antique Row received a boost from a 1990's Architectural Digest article declaring it the best place in West Palm Beach to find treasures from 1920s Art Deco to mid-century modern. By 2003, Antique Row was drawing comparisons to the Rue de Beaune in Paris and New King's Road in London. Today trendy restaurants have joined the antique stores and there is a popular annual street fair. Patricia's Gallery is owned by the Countess Patricia Pingree-Clouet, a French curator, designer, and collector who hand picks antiques to mid century items from private collections, estates, and homes all over the world. Patricia worked for five years in Paris for the fashion house Coco Chanel under Karl Lagerfeld. Some of the items in the store Patricia designs herself. Prices are more than I can afford but I had fun looking. While I was browsing the gentleman working gave a very interesting lecture on Victorian era spoon warmer cups. They were filled with hot water so you could dip your spoon in and heat it before eating your soup during a time when the kitchen was often far from the dining room. One of the stores clients collects them and has repurposed them as individual flower vases at each place setting. I had never heard of them before so it was interesting to learn about them. I wish I could have stuck around for more stories. Perhaps another time.

Dishonorable business! Over the holiday weekend, I informed Patricia via Chairish that I had…read moreclients interested in a $$$$ table, and asked her to place a hold on it until the payment went through, which she did. The price at that point was $3400, and my portion of that was $340 - which is all I get paid for this sale. Because of the holiday, it took until Tuesday for my clients' payment to clear. At that point, I made an offer and inadvertently put in the retail price instead of the trade price. As soon as I sent it, I realized the error and messaged her, letting her know what had happened and asking her not to process it. I also tried to contact Chairish for help but their customer service is pretty much non-existent at this point. You cannot get ahold of them for days at a time. Nonetheless, the payment went through. I then messaged Patricia to ask her to please refund me the $340. She has declined to do so, saying that it is 'out of her hands' - which is patently ridiculous, since she can certainly mail me a check. I will not be buying from her again, and I am going to continue to pursue this matter.
