Visiting from California where bagels are often just sad, chewy bread circles pretending to be something they're not. Then I met St. James Bagel. And my carb-loving soul ascended. I ordered not one, but TWO bagels because self-control left the building the moment I walked in. * Egg Everything toasted with cream cheese: So good it whispered sweet nothings to me. * Classic Everything toasted with cream cheese: Basically the bagel equivalent of a mic drop. Both were perfectly toasted, with that magical combo of crispy outside and chewy inside, like they were handcrafted by a team of angelic New Yorkers in the back. By the time I finished, I considered proposing marriage to the staff, or at least asking if they offer long-distance delivery to California. Spoiler alert: they don't. I am relatively new to the area and you know how important it is to find the right bagels. I've been to a few in the area and hands down it's St James Bagels. Not only are the bagels devine, the staff are friendly and smiling (!) even day after Christmas. I'm not one to write a review but props to the owner. He is running a wonderful shop and must treat employees well. The ambiance is great too. It's like a chalet style. And even when it's busy the staff is moving it all along with ease. Got a bacon, egg and cheese on a toasted everything bagel the other day and it was out of this world. The bacon was perfectly crisp (not burnt), egg cooked perfectly (I hate when it's over cooked) & bagel so delicious and toasted the right amount. The sandwich was warm and delicious. I got 2 scrambled eggs with bacon on an egg bagel. The bagel was fresh and soft, definitely made same day. The bacon was crispy and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The inside looks clean and the lady behind the counter was extremely friendly and made small talk with me. She seemed very attentive with guest dining there. I went there based on other yelp reviews and was really disappointed. I asked for crispy bacon and specifically said not well done and burnt. But I got well done and burnt. The eggs whites were runny and I asked for a toasted bagel. I saw the girl who helped me toast a bagel, but that's not the bagel my sandwich was on. It was too dense, doughy and chewy. Their everything bagels are sparse lacking any flavor. It took 20 minutes to get the sandwich and was not worth it! The people are nice though. read more

With 24 Hour Bagels (Bagel Gallery) apparently closing at the end of the year, St. James Bagels has been a reassurance that I'll be able to have a go-to bagel place--even if it won't be open 24/7. I'm not sure what the backstory is, but at some point, it seems like this place just straight up replaced Bagel Paradise. The service inside is very quick and efficient... one person handles your order from beginning to end, very typical of deli-type places. The prices are reasonable, as a bagel with butter or cream cheese will only cost you about $2-3. They have a pretty impressible variety as well, including the massively hyped rainbow bagels that became popular in Brooklyn in recent years. Yesterday, my girlfriend and I got a french toast bagel with cream cheese and a rainbow bagel with butter from here, respectively. The rainbow bagel had a super interesting, but good taste--nice and savory? I really appreciated that they did not overly lather the butter on, but instead gave a reasonable amount that complemented the bagel itself. I got to have some of the french toast bagel too, and I have to say, it tastes freakishly similar to what actual french toast tastes like. I'm a bit conflicted on how I feel about that, but I do have to give them mad credit for getting their flavors down. This is the kind of place that well encapsulate what Long Island bagels are about. As I saw people come in and out, I thought to myself that this would be the kind of place to go when you need to feed your kids and their friends after they wake up from a sleepover. That's a long way away for me, but that's the essence I felt here. read more

I found St. James Bagels through the Yelp app, and the excellent ratings sold me. I put in a catering order for a bridal party; bagels, muffins, fruit and coffee for the "girls" room and bagels, lox and coffee for the "guys" room. The order arrived, promptly at 10 am, and was brought to the respective rooms and set up. The presentation of the muffins (with some rainbow cookies thrown in!), bagels and fruit was lovely, and all the necessary plates, cups, creamer, etc. were with the order. Both rooms were so pleased to have this lovely spread to start their day and wedding preparations! I'm sure this place is great for bagels and breakfast food. My wife and I ordered a cheesesteak and a cheeseburger and that's where this place falls short. I ordered my cheeseburger medium/well and what I got was a frozen patty, that came out rare. I sent it back and when I bit into it I was greeted by a non-seasoned chewy piece of frozen meat. Not good at all. My wife's cheesesteak was freshly cut but over cooked and completely bland. The meat was dry and without flavor. Like I said, if you're going there for breakfast, it looks like a great place as evident by the lines of people for bagels. But skip this place for a quick lunch. read more

Before I give this review, I want to make something very clear... this is my first review of any establishment ever. I am no "Karen" as they would say, and specifically made a Yelp account to make this review. I have been a loyal customer to St James Bagels ever since its inception. For years my family, friends, and I have been getting bagels and egg sandwiches. Everything from the service, food, ice tea, coffee has been fantastic and I would've never thought in my wildest dreams I'd be making a review like this. Unfortunately, that has all changed over my last few visits. Many little things were adding up over a recent short period of time and TODAY was the nail in the coffin. Me and my friends ordered 3 egg sandwiches and a bagel over the phone. Whoever was on the phone taking my order was clearly not paying attention whatsoever, constantly repeating our orders back wrong and me and my friends joked in the car about how our order is definitely messed up. When I arrived the place was decently busy, a few people in line waiting, I have seen it 10x worse. Like I said earlier, I have been coming here for years and understand that when this place gets very very busy and I completely get how it can get very stressful for the staff. Being a veteran of the restaurant industry, I 100% understand how it can be. People are a**holes, I get it. But today was just not one of those days. I could easily see that it was a moderate, maybe even a slow day. When I approached the counter, it took the entire staff at least 7-8 minutes to even make eye contact with me. I literally began to lean on the counter with my debit card out like I was at a club ordering a rum and coke. I know because I was constantly checking the time because I was already running late for work. I was consistently being moved over for walk in customers and not a soul acknowledged my existence. I could see my bag labeled on the counter and all they had to do was ring me up. Finally, after waiting, a kid whose job probably wasn't even to ring my order up saw I was waiting awhile, apologized and rung me up. I said it's fine, totally wasn't a big deal. I found out then that they raised the price for an egg sandwich. Look, 5.80 was already a steep price, but now it is way over 6 dollars for a SEC/BEC. I was confused but again, not a huge deal. What happened next was really what pissed me off. For years, SJB offered either an Ice Tea, juice, or small coffee with their drinks. Today, I found out its extra now to get one of those. I was very disappointed. Now instead of my egg sandwich being 5 bucks and change, WITH THE ICE TEA, its now about 7 dollars. I'm not a cheap person, none of my friends are, but are you guys kidding? Up charging 50 cents??? I just find that absolutely ridiculous and cheap. After declining to pay the extra 1.50 total, I asked the kid who rung me up if the bagel I ordered was in the bag, he said yes, I took his word, so I left. When we got home, every egg sandwich was made incorrectly and guess what, the bagel wasn't in the bag! My SEC had ketchup, my friend got the wrong bagel with no butter like he asked, and my bagel was covered in sesame seeds. I have a moderate allergy to these seeds and needed to take Benadryl after eating my very ketchupped egg sandwich. I developed bad tingles in my throat that now won't go away for the rest of the day. (This part is mainly my fault as I should have checked before eating, but why does my PLAIN BAGEL have so many seeds on it. Do you guys not clean the counters? Or maybe even separate the bagels??). And to add all of this up, one of the workers, who already has a sh*t attitude was handling the bagels with his bare hands and a fellow customer and I saw the incident at the same time, made eye contact, and shook our heads in disbelief. I am in no way a germ freak and could care less personally, but come on man that gross as f*ck. We were severely disappointed and the last thing we said before parting ways for work was "We need to find a new bagel place". Besides now being the most expensive place in town, the service has gone very downhill and the petty cheapness has gone too far for us to handle. I am very very sad to say that me and my friends will not be returning to St. James Bagels for the time being. That is easily 6-7 loyal customers whose families will also no longer be coming in, who are no longer loyal. This is not the first time the service has sucked over the last few weeks, and I pray you all get your act together because your food is too good for this sh*t! read more

A Few days ago I walked in trying to get breakfast, I stood in in front of the cashier for about 5 min trying to order and 2 employees walked right by me and saw I was waiting and never was asked if I was being helped nor they would be right with me. Great place in St James. Huge parking lot, finding a spot won't be an issue. Once you walk in you are greeted by friendly staff eager to help you. You are blown away by the selections of bagels they have to offer and the deli selections. The coffee stand is basically make your own the way you like it which is a plus. There is limited seating in the place only about three to four tables available for seating. I ended up ordering a sunflower bagel with egg whites and bacon. Everything was cooked to my liking! I have been to this place about a dozen times. I will not be back for the 13th time,,,allow me to explain. I order a bagel maybe two. Chances of them getting my order wrong 97.2%. I think okay it happens and I won't hold it against them--next time I'm there I say my order slow and even ask if they want to write it down. Guess what? Screwed up again. It's such a shame because this place is so close to my home and I literally pass this place daily. It could have been such a good thing but how many times can you give me the wrong sandwich or the wrong bagel or forget items. Cmon. Owner should be on premises to oversee and correct before more people just pass it by too. read more

Been here twice. Very good bagels, good coffee and good muffins. The service is quick. Just a bit confusing when you walk in. There is a big front counter and a line by the register. I am not sure which 'line' is the right one, but I get ordered on quickly. They know how to move the crowd. Sunflower whole wheat bagels are my favorite. They use real butter, not that whipped fake stuff. My kids said the cream cheese was fresh. Coffee is self serve and they have about 5 tables. Each bagel is served in its own little paper sleeve, dd thought this was cool. Very happy to have a bagel store back in St. James and this is a good one! read more

While visiting a friend we decide to stop by for some rainbow bagels. Seeing how these bagels are so popular I was pretty excited to give it a try. We stopped by early morning around 1030 , line inside moves rather quickly. Bagels we had all rainbow bagels with , cream cheese & jelly , strawberry cream cheese , chocolate cream cheese & regular cream cheese. I had mine toasted with cream cheese & grape jelly , I must say bagel was amazing nice & soft bagel plenty of cream cheese with the jelly very good. I was surprised at how good the Strawberry & Chocolate cream cheese was , good strawberry as well as the chocolate. As for the place not very big with a small seating area. Plenty of options for the bagels aside from cream cheese good to know. Recently stopped by again & tried the Egg & Cheese on a toasted rainbow bagel ... Very good taste wise nice soft toasted bagel was delicious. Service was good & prices are decent. read more
