On a mission to return to the places that I loved when I first moved to New Orleans over 11 years ago, I landed on St. Joe's a couple times this summer. Once the closest bar to my home, I now live on the opposite end of town, yet I'm compelled to make a stop here whenever we're having an Uptown night. Especially on a Friday late afternoon/early evening because the bartender is a really cool lady and I've seen her masterfully handle a HH crowd. We were also in a slow summer evening it was fun chatting with her. They have a perfectly cold and bubbly Prosecco, which is really all I need but should I ever been in the mood for a blueberry mojito, they are legendary here. I also appreciate the back bar area although the last couple times it was a zillion degrees and sitting in an open air courtyard wasn't happening for us. It's incredibly nice out there when the weather is less brutal. In the meantime, I'm perfectly happy inside where it's a perpetual Sunday mass. I've been wanting to check this place out for YEARS. Finally went with a few coworkers after an event. This is my type of bar. Nice enough not to be pretentious but a lot of old features to feel like a good neighborhood spot. I love that they have a pool table, internet jukebox, and an outdoor space. The decor on the patio feels a lot different than the inside of the bar. I loved the bohemian feel of the patio space. The blueberry mojito tasted very fresh and light. Even the bathroom had cute, artsy wall detailing. This is my kind of spot. Looking forward to the next visit. read more

St. Joes is BACK OPEN AGAIN! It re-opened after being closed for Covid and then closed again for quite a long time. A couple of weeks ago, it reopened from Wednesday-Sunday starting at 4pm (check Google or their Instagram for their most updated hours). So happy!! I bartender in the area. Came in for the first time in a month or so to be told I'm banned. The reason according to the bartender is cause i had a heart attack after work while there (on my second beer) and an ambulance had to be called. I had been in after that and not had any issues so i wasnt expecting me and my coworkers to be turned away. So please guys don't have a medical emergency there. read more

This bar is in my top five list. They are known for their mojitos and is probably one of the first craft cocktail bars in the city before craft cocktail bars were popular. You walk in and it is a hole in the wall, but keep going till you reach the back patio. The ambience is great and filled with religious decor everywhere. It is fitting for a New Orleans bar. The service here is always great. They do not have food, but you are on Magazine Street, come here for a fresh mojito or two after dinner. read more

To be fair, there are also some asian influenced religious artifacts outside in the patio - and what a Great patio it is! This is another very cool place to hang out with friends in the afternoon and enjoy some conversation and a cocktail. Dark and quiet inside at the bar and light and airy outside in the patio. I've been by a few times now and wanted to make sure and throw down a good review for St. Joe's. It's a fantastic local bar with an impressive selection of spirits. Apparently they have a mojito you'll love as well, based off of the countless reviews on here raving about it. I particularly was just in awe of all their whiskey and scotch. Service was friendly. Usually it's two bartenders running things in the main room and they keep things moving along at a good clip. There's a great little outdoor patio area in the back, in case you get bottlenecked in the front room. They also have a bar out there though it wasn't serving the last time I came through. Probably depends on the crowd. it's a narrow little hole in the wall, unassumingly hiding on magazine, but come by for a sip and you'll surely be as impressed as I was. read more

NOW SMOKE FREE!! St Joe's is one of those weird little New Orleans places that I love. It's a total dive, but it has a few redeeming qualities: 1) The place is decorated like a rejected church. The crosses hanging from the ceilings and the dim lighting was enough to creep out this Catholic girl the first time I set foot in the place. Just sitting at the bar makes you think you are doing something wrong. 2) A good jukebox. Great tunes and although the place can get cramped, there is bound to be something in there that the crowd will love. 3) A signature drink. Here, it's the mojito. They have the regular one and the blueberry one. Don't ask me about either, as I don't drink liquor. I've heard they are good. I think I had one once, but I wasn't impressed, but trust me, I'm not the one to judge. 4) The patio. You can sit outside when the weather is nice and you'll feel like you are in a tropical paradise. The patio is decorated with banana trees and there is an outside bar, which is always packed (get there early) when it isn't in the 90s. 5) Everything else. A pool table, awesome atmosphere, nice people, and they allow dogs. What more could you want? Did I mention that the place is smoke free now?? read more

St. Joe's kind of freaked me out. Maybe it was the religious symbols on display, but something in this bar made me feel a little uneasy. It kind of felt like God was looking down and judging me when all I wanted was a few beers. Despite the overwhelming guilt I felt, the bar was not all that bad. The patio area seemed very cool, but was too crowded to try and hang out there. The main bar area was large, but too narrow to hang out with friends without being in someone's way. The selection of beers was pretty good, including several reasonably priced specials. Bartenders struggled to keep up with the large crowd, but were friendly. While I don't think St. Joe's will become one of my regular haunts, if asked, i would come here again. read more

I like this place, its a cool spot to visit , but not a big fave of mine since im a beer drinker. The atmosphere is a bit odd and uncomfortable. I am raised Catholic, so that means built in guilt. There is alot of church stuff in here that is a bit unsettling to me. Its cool, dont get me wrong, just strange. Its not like drinking beer at a Church fair or spaghetti dinner in a cafeteria. So because im a beer drinker, I have a overwhelming urge to expand my taste and drink cocktails like a grown up. This place is known for the mojito and by golly thats what im gonna drink. I tried a minty kinda mojito. Alot of fuss went into it. The muddling and the pomp and circumstance was neat and cool. I was feeling like a sophisticated adult already. All quality stuff went into it..... but....just wasnt the thing for me. I tried another one, different flavor....think it was a raspberry concoction. Was tasty but still i am longing for a beer. If mojitos is your thing or you wanna try one, I believe this may be the place to try it. There was no eye rolling when ordering one, the amount of time and work put into each drink is a labor of love and the staff seemed unfazed by it, so that would be my biggest reason to recommend visiting St. Joe. SMOKE-FREE: On a quest to cool off after shopping Magazine Street, we were in search of a smoke-free bar and found St. Joe's. Thank you fellow yelpers! BLUEBERRY MOJITO: Even if you aren't a mojito fan, this signature drink deserves a try. It is by far the best mojito I've ever had with a crisp and refreshing taste. I watched the bartender use a muddler to crush the mint leaves and blueberries together so that they marinated in harmony. It was amazing how meticulous the bartender was - he seems to have a talent that many mixologists are lacking these days. Another couple at the bar saw our amazing drinks and decided they wanted blueberry mojitos too! FRESH: After speaking with the bartender, I learned that they use fresh juices for their drinks. This can transform a drink from average to superior. It's the extra steps that St. Joe's takes that makes them stand out. PATIO: The back patio is a nice place to chill out and is a good escape when the bar gets crowded. The decor on the patio is funky and eclectic with Chinese lanterns hanging above a church-like setting. I guess I can always go to confession after I sin with too many blueberry mojitos! read more

I don't get why this is classified as a dive bar; it's not super classy, but it's definitely not dive-y either. It's in between, a regular bar. The blueberry mojitos are good, no questions asked. I love the church decor but I'm not a religious person so they don't offend me. The bartenders are okay, it can be a PITA to get their attention sometimes. I prefer this place earlier rather than later and during the week because the crowd can become a bit hipster-y. I do like this place but I just wanna sit down, have a drink, and chat. When this place is crowded that can be difficult. So, great blueberry mojitos, great decor, NON-SMOKING (LOVE IT!!!), so-so service, hipster-y crowds later at night and on weekends. I'll definitely be going back here but I won't say a lot of that has to do with the fact that I live within walking distance. They do have 1 TV so it's a good place to watch Saints games if you want more low-key and non-smoking. read more

I originally didn't didn't think too much of this place. It's a bit of a snug fit at times and I used to run into waaay too many of my classmates here. But blueberry mojitos = love love love. Hands down, one of of my favorite drinks ever! That brisk crushing of a few blueberries just really compliments mojitos. I think because blueberries kind of have a subtle mint initial bite - am I the only person who thinks this? Probably. It's a shame that the bartenders meticulously meter out their pours for all the drinks, but I'm willing to overlook it, just this once. On weekdays, particularly mid-week, this place is outfitted with mostly locals and it doesn't get particularly jam-packed. It's not exactly a college hang out bar during this time period, thank sweet Jaysus. I feels like a friendly subdued neighborhood bar. You can mostly keep to yourself or strike up a conversation with the nearest local near to you. The adorable patio (complete with it's own bar are) remains mostly empty, but if you desired more isolation - check out it. St Joe's is definitely a dive bar - a little shabby, a little unkempt, but yet not dingy feeling. Being a dive bar aficionado, this perfect balance appeals to me. During weekends, this place can be quite the place to be. It's a little more dense with the college and law school crowd. It was often the after stop or pre-really going out destination for me in my heyday. Service can be painstakingly delayed on the busier days and the there's a single toilet bathroom for the ladies, which can be a pain in the butt. But really, check out the courtyard/patio. Simply adorable with the dozens of Chinese lanterns. I highly recommend this place to anyone hoping to get away from the usual Magazine Street bars. read more

This is always a pretty consistently good bar with a decent crowd. They have gone non-smoking in the main part of the bar but they allow smoking on the back "patio" which isn't really much of a patio as it is all enclosed. They have a pool table crammed in between the bathrooms and the men's bathroom is among the smallest of any bar in New Orleans. They are noted for their mixed drinks and particularly for their blueberry mojito. I've never seen this bar get slam packed like some other establishments and it always seems you can generally find a place to sit and relax while you enjoy your drink. read more

Parking is a hassle because it is on Magazine but when you do find a spot you can get drinks and dinner without driving. Did I mention the blueberry Mojitos? I love that it's smoke free inside! My favorite part about hanging out here is outside in the patio. Even though it was VERY cold this past Friday night, I preferred sitting out there than inside because it wasn't as packed. They were very nice about us bringing in outside food. I was there from 7-10 pm, and I slowly saw the place fill up, but it was full-ish already when I got there at 7. I don't know when happy hour ends, but it starts when it opens. I don't know all the beer prices, but the happy hour prices for beer was $3.50, and $3.50 for well drinks. Blueberry mojitos (super yummy, and fresh blueberries too!) were $6.50. And you spend at least $10 for a credit card. which isn't too bad if you open a tab for the night. read more

Even though it's Uptown, I'm a fan of St. Joe's Bar. However, because it's Uptown, it's on the other side of the earth, and therefore I don't get to hang out here very often. It's a laid back bar, non-smoking as of recently, with a pool table inside and a nice patio outside. There's probably a lot of smoke outside nowadays, since people can't smoke inside the bar. It's located across the street, more or less, from Whole Foods. That's about all I can think of to tell you about St. Joe's. Good place, good people, inconvenient (for me) location. read more

Finally had the famed blueberry mojito.. it was good, not great. Now, I don't know if you know anything about muddling, but it does not mean crushing the blueberries to an untimely death. I also don't think it had much in the way of liquor, to be honest, and at $6, I want to get at least a full shot (which seems difficult in those small glasses). I prefer Three Muses' strawberry mojito personally (which is $7-8, twice as big, and has significantly more fruit/flavor). Other than that, I like St. Joe's atmosphere, it's dark but not too dark and loud but not too loud. I don't get the hype. Maybe not so much on Yelp, but I've definitely heard that St. Joe's was the greatest shit ever in some circles I run with (or.. around). Stopped by on a Thursday night to watch the Lakers game and it was mad packed with obnoxious douchebags pushing up against me. What? Okay. I'm sitting on this stool already so why are you pushing me over, asshole. Ended up leaving and watching the rest of the game at home. Beer selection wasn't bad but the bartenders were way too rushed and it took forever to get a pint, even sitting at the bar. Decor was cool. I like the crazy chandeliers done up in huge oversized Xmas ornaments for the holidays and the ornate Catholic paintings. Prices were fine but too much compared to the Red Door (although this is Uptown). I might give it another chance but probably not of my own accord. read more

I am *always* down to get some mojitos at St. Joe's bar. Now that they've gone smoke-free, I am going to do my best to make a few more visits. It's (I think) conveniently located one block from Jefferson and Magazine at Magazine and Octavia--across the street from Slice, Whole Foods and Pinkberry. Besides bomb-a** mojitos, St. Joe's has a great selection from the bar and for beer on tap and in bottles. I suppose parking can be tough, but I recently discovered a parking lot behind Slice meant for a number of Magazine Street shops that was empty when I walked by. Don't be hesitant to push your way past the bar if it's crowded because there's more room in the back (including a pool table, rest rooms and an outdoor seating area). The bartender has been there for years and he takes his time making the mojitos which is the *right* way to make a mojito. It's muddled to perfection and he probably has carpel tunnel from all the muddling he's done throughout the years. Probably my favorite uptown bar. St. Joe's has a great jukebox, chill atmosphere, with a long bar room that leads to a pool table. Keep walking and you get to a good sized dimly lit patio, which is dog friendly. The bar tenders know what they're doing!! Located on the Corner of Magazine and St. Joseph is a lovely little place called St. Joe's. The outside isn't that grand looking, but they have a pretty cool sign, so don't let the outward appearance worry you. Inside it's great. It's small, sure, but there is a fully-stocked bar and the perfect amount of ambient lighting. And if you have any sort of Catholic background, you'll notice the many little church-like things used to decorate (like pews, crosses, and candles). The front area is not that spacey, so when the crowd comes in, I suggest you move to the patio area in the back. It has a very cathedral-like feel to it. Don't worry about getting cold in the winter because they have heat lamps as well as a separate bar to keep you warm and toasted. I'm sure the other reviews for St. Joe's mention their famous beverage: the Blueberry Mojito. It's absolutely delicious. It comes in a snifter glass with mint leaves and crushed blueberries on the bottom (and it's only $6!). This is definitely my drink of choice when at St. Joe's. But be careful! They're so good that they can prove to be pretty dangerous (unless that's what you're going for of course). If you haven't been to St. Joe's yet and you love mojitos or blueberries, you definitely should try this place. read more

St. Joe's is a perfect Uptown crossroads, hip old school Catholicity up front, pool table crammed in halfway with a slice of open air patio in the back, rounded out with a strangely pleasant pagoda-like hall. The bar is not too divey, not too hip. Just about right. Great for getting in an actual conversation, but not dead by any means. Mostly younger crowd most of the time - but the pool table sports some interesting patrons at times. Friendly and easy-going bartenders. The single walkway along the bar gets packed at times. There's really no night of the week that couldn't conceivably include a brief stint at St. Joe's for one reason or another. I know a person who goes there to read early on slower week nights and one who even gets some light schoolwork done with a beer in hand. A versatile neighborhood bar. read more

In my great pursuit of "my bar" I tried St. Joes one weekday night. Inside bar is pretty standard and surprisingly unadorned. I'm not sure what I was expecting after reading all these reviews. Something more polished probably. I agree that the beer on tap selection is totally rockin' and the blueberry mojitos are delicious. The back bar seems like a nice place to hang out too. Best part about the bar is most certainly the jukebox selection. Jazz, blues, etc. My problem: My friend and I were dressed nicely and I tipped adequately (generously, even) yet the bartender consistently served his regulars first. And I'm not a jerk. Is my money not green? Not appreciated, you aloof bartender. Remember, 3 stars = A-OK. When I walked into St. Joe's last night I was overcome by an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia... it is true what they say, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. I always took St. Joe's for granted because it was the dive, hole in the wall bar down my street, but my god you don't see places like these anywhere else in the nation! Its tiny. When you first walk in you have the bar to your left and a very tight hallway/pathway leading to the back, where a pool table is crammed in...it gets cozy in here, definitely not a place to watch a sports event, it is more of an intimate environment. The decor is amazing! a mixture of baroque and New Orleanean, with weird religious artifacts hanging from the wooden walls (including a copper angel and a drawing of virgin mary) The back porch it's absolutely beautiful. They have an asian garden feel going on with beautiful red lanterns hanging from the gazebo-like hut where the back bar is located. The furniture is the typical wrought green iron patio furniture, and there are cute Buddha fountains in the corners. I have two words for you to remember: BLUEBERRY MOJITOS ... their signature drink is absolutely divine, and they use fresh blueberries to mix with the fresh mint.... hmm an elixir of life! The service is a toss up, sometimes they're in a good mood, sometimes they're in a bad mood, but they always deliver. read more
