YES! Finally, St Johns has a hardware store again. We stopped in this morning and picked up a few things and perused the store, and I am impressed! It looks small from the outside, but it's actually quite spacious, and well-stocked and organized. Along with the fasteners, plumbing, paint, electrical stuff and tools you'd expect to find in a hardware store, they have lots of canning and cleaning supplies, kitchen gadgets, pet food and other necessities for our animal friends, and gardening tools/accessories. As it's newly opened, they are still getting some stock in. Employees are super friendly and helpful. The fasteners section is not as large as Parkrose, but they do have stainless steel and metric stuff, and we'll definitely be coming here first rather than driving across town when we need some specialty item. And most importantly, we now have a neighborhood alternative to Lowes Desperate for small projects! read more

This Ace is your quintessential neighborhood hardware store. You are always greeted by smiling faces at the ready to help. Although the store isn't as expansive as a Home Base or Lowe's, they almost always have what I have needed, and at competitive prices. Owning my place is a newer experience for me. Instead of calling the manager at my old apartment for things to be fixed, I'm on my own. Ace has me covered. If I bring in the broken part, or take a picture of what I need they are happy to take me to the replacement, and tell me how to fix whatever it is. It would be tough to beat their service. To add to the cool small town-neighborhood feel they have free popcorn and a couple of sweet Golden Retrievers. There's a sign on the popcorn machine instructing you not to give the dogs popcorn, but that doesn't stop them from making eyes at you as you grab a bag. They're super cute. They have a bunch of cool things at the cash register, some of which you had no idea you needed until you saw them. I have ended up with a Moonstruck chocolate bar and a cool very compact flashlight for my key chain. I was tempted by the multitude of heirloom vegetable and flower seeds in a display. This Ace location used to have really great customer service. Not sure if there was a change recently, but I had a pretty bad experience. I had a key made, the guy that made it seemed distracted. Turns out the key didn't work, when I looked at it later the ridges matched up but the new key was the wrong size, too short. I went back the next day and an older lady with long hair was at the counter, I explained the situation. She looked at the key and said there was "no way we made this". Even though the copy key was marked with "ACE" right on it. I didn't have the receipt, since it was for work I had to turn in the receipt to my company. She left and came back, reluctantly said she would make another key but that I needed to bring the receipt next time. No "sorry for our mistake" or anything like that. Well there won't be a next time, as I don't appreciate being called a liar after having to take extra time and go out of my way so you can fix your mistake. read more

While I can't agree more with everyone about St. Johns needing a hardware store, that alone won't get you 5 stars. What will, is the awesome customer service every time I've been here. So many times I've wandered around the big box hardware stores trying to find someone to answer a question for 5-10 minutes. But they are always never to be found, or busy with something else. Not so here at Ace. Just try and throw a befuddled look around the store, guaranteed someone will ask you if they can help you. Some items are very competitive with the Lowes and Home Depot, while others may be slightly more. This is more than offset by the time saved by literally walking to my local hardware store. read more

Almost there. Four Stars. Good selection.. very knowledgeable staff... customer service is top notch. This is a very new store, and as such there is a learning process to know what the customer values, what they don't. Pricing is pretty much 'list pricing' until they figure their market out. But the convenience is wonderful! If chain store pricing is WAY lower than Ace on any given item, talk to the owner and negotiate a lower price. Bring along a copy of the bigbox web price to compare. The convenience of not having to make that half hour trip to the 7th ring of hell has to be worth something, but pricing must be realistic. And yeah, support this store. We felt the loss for a long time when St Johns Hardware closed. Big box competition was part of the cause. Lets not go back to those days. read more

We have been wanting a hardware store in St. Johns ever since the family that owned the previous one retired a little over ten years ago. This is not a big place, but it is well-stocked with a well-chosen selection of items. The staff here is helpful without being "in the way" and often help me come up with solutions to the everyday tasks I go to a hardware store to solve. Really, when it comes to a hardware store, a big part of the value is the expertise of the staff. Yeah, I might be able to save a few percent on the price of that if I go to one of the big box stores, but good luck finding anyone there who knows what it is and what it does, much less where to find it. read more

These guys are great. Hardware store is as good as any other ace, and the service is great. My notable experience was with making a copy of the key for our Scion. Dealer wanted 200+, other hardware stores would either refuse to try, or, like OSH, quote an incredibly high price (90-120) because "MICROCHIPS!". The guy at this Ace ACTUALLY CHECKS MY KEY with an RFID dector, no rfid, makes me a $3.00 key that works perfectly. And Dogs. read more

Yup. They got it. Friendliness, helpfulness, yada, yada. I don't need to repeat what all the other reviews are saying, but I would like to recant a story. Me (calling at 8:05pm):"Hello, are you guys still open?" Ace Lady: "No, we closed 5 minutes ago......but what can I help you with?" Me: "Oh shoot, I have a plumbing problem (go on to explain it) and I need a part for it, but that's ok, we can make do for tonight (having worked in service most of my life, I NEVER want to be the last-call-we-are-closing dudette). Ace Lady: "Hey, not a problem, we will be here for another 15 minutes cleaning, why don't you come on down and get the part." Me:"...................no it's ok, you really don't have to do that...." Ace Lady: "Don't worry about it, I'll put the part you need up by the register, it will be here when you arrive." Damn. That's like an inspiring, tear-jerking episode of the Andy Griffith show in which there is never an appearance of Gomer Pyle or Barney Fife. It's like when you come across an internet video of a guy with no legs who decided to persevere and compete in the Olympics. Better yet, it's comparable to when Susan Boyle got up in front of the mic in Britain's Got Talent and we all sneered cynically, but when she open her mouth and began singing, we felt a deep sense of shame for ourselves coupled with elation over every heavenly note. Even better still, it's like flipping through the channels late at night during the holiday season, frustrated that your in-laws are sleeping in your bed, and hating the whole idea of Christmas, when the final scenes of Its a Wonderful Life comes on, and although you've seen it 100 times, you find yourself drenched in your own tears, dripping melted ice-cream (your favorite comfort food) all over the carpet. That shit is is so good. It's make-you-fall-to-your-knees-and-cry-out-to-God-because-your-heart-is-bursting-with-love-again good. The staff is helpful and knowledgable for finding what you need, but when I went to pay, their chip reader failed, and when I asked them to just enter the information, I was told that they "don't do that anymore". I was directed to the ATM next door, which charges 3 dollars for transactions. It's not a *lot* of money, but it's a pretty bad way to treat your customers. I don't know if their point of sale system is from the 1700s or if they just want to operate a cash business, but they need to get their act together. read more

Everyone is SO helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Garden department is small but their small indoor plants are well priced, healthy, and there is a great variety! I've lived in many different Portland neighborhoods for 5 years and this is still the only hardware store I go to. read more

A perfect fit for St. Johns. Very (like VERY) friendly staff, owner, management. I liked that they had kids from the neighborhood high school playing music for their grand opening. I appreciate them starting that relationship with our community. As far as service goes: I've worked with Devin and Mike on different things and both have always been respectful, resourceful, knowledgable, and creative in brainstorming solutions. This is exactly what I come to a neighborhood hardware store for. I'm happy to have this resource so close by. Great selection, too. Nice to be able to get some nuts and bolts without having to go to far. (like Jantzen Beach or Portland Meadows). Free Popcorn, they just ask you don't feed the store dog. I rented a carpet cleaner that turned out to be defective (leaking water out the back) and dirty (so filled with dog hair, gook and most likely fleas). We took pictures and videos to document the damage. Upon returning it we received the most apathetic customer service from the assistant manager. He offered to credit us back half the charge and with glazed eyes kept saying "that's all I can offer you". Incredibly unacceptable. We should have charged them for having to get the carpets re-cleaned from their negligence. This St Johns gem has definitely lost it's "we're happy you're in the neighborhood" sparkle. And all over $22!! Ridiculous. It's left a 100x sour taste in our mouths. read more

The service here is amazing!! I experienced some of the best customer service this Christmas season. I ordered a Christmas tree stand online a week before I was to pick out my tree for ship to store. The weekend I was to pick out my tree I received a call from the store that they had accidentally put the stand on the store shelf and sold it to another customer. To remedy this, they found one at another local store, and the owner of the Ace Hardware here in St Johns delivered the stand to my house personally, apologized for the error and wished me happy holidays. WOW! In the middle of the busy retail season, this kind of service stands out all the more. Grateful to have stores like this in our neighborhood! read more

I have done a lot of business with this wonderful neighborhood hardware store over the past three years. The knowledgable and friendly staff always provide outstanding customer service. Two recent experiences really stand out for me. First, I was purchasing some white paint to redo a room. The paint specialist could have just rang up my purchase, but she asked some insightful questions that prompted me to change both the type of finish and the tint to ensure that I achieved my desired results. Second, we had a problem with a valve on a propane tank and they responded quickly to see if it could be fixed or needed to be replaced so that I could get right back to barbecuing! ....and the dogs and the popcorn. I can't remember someone hustling this hard for my business. Lawn mower died and I found one I liked on Ace's national website. Called the store and somebody told me they had it in stock. So I arrive at the store to learn from Devan that no, they don't have it. He was bothered that I had made the effort and drive and started calling other Ace stores to see if they had one, saying they'd go get it and DELIVER it to my house. Finally he said he'd get it done and call me. In the end he found one at a non-Ace store and apparently convinced them to sell it at the Ace price which was $60 cheaper and got them to hold it for me. All this effort to help me and he didn't even get the sale. You bet I will buy plenty more from the St. John's store and highly recommend you take your questions and needs there. read more

Customer service at its best. Recently had some shingles come off the roof. Construction buddy (feed the chicken) gave me some pointers and told me what I needed. Went to Ace in St. Johns...at 6:30pm I walked in behind another customer. The cashier greeted us both and gave us both clear directions on where to go for our needs. As I walked to the directed location in the store, I heard her in the background telling someone of the two customer's needs. Next thing you know, I've got a guy, in a red smock and radio ear piece walking to my location. He engages me and asks how he can help with my roofing questions. LOVE IT! I told one person in the store and everyone now knows what I need. He walked me through some steps to aid in the repair process. Pushed me in the right and best direction to fix the problem and said if I had any further questions to come on in or give the store a call. Great service from walking in to cashing out. It's nice being able to find some real goods, with real service. Back when Fred Meyer wasn't owned by Kroger, they had tools and hardware not made in China, but it's been garbage since, and that happened around the time that the Ace closed. It was always an ordeal to drive 5+ miles just to get the smallest thing, having a hardware store this competent, that stocks things made in America when possible, with a surprisingly broad selection..it's a dream! read more
