The apartment itself is pretty spacious (we had only a one bedroom). There is a washer and dryer within the complex so that is nice and convenient. The apartment is very modern and clean. We had one parking spot, but if guests ever visited there was never an issue with parking (since there is a park right next to the complex), and not to mention it is dog friendly! The area is nice and quiet. It is conveniently close to the 805 freeway. It could not be better located and was amidst a lot of shopping, restaurants, breweries, transportation and schools that are walking distance. The grounds and facilities are kept clean by friendly courteous workers. The landlord was extremely accommodating, friendly, and quick to answer any questions. My husband and I really enjoyed our time here and I would recommend it to others. If we had gotten stationed in San Diego we would have renewed our lease.

However, for the price, it has *tons* of character, and given the location in the heart of downtown, it's a decent value. The units are large and open and really interesting with lofts and open concepts. What is GREAT about this property is the management -- specifically Shalom! When I have a problem she listens. And if she can possibly fix it, she does so, immediately. She respects the tenants and makes us feel heard. For example, my fridge recently stopped working. I have rented for *many* years, and had it been any other property manager I've had over the years, they would have tried to nickel and dime me and make me go away. They probably would have tried to convince me that my 15 year old fridge was actually new, told me to adjust the temperature and come back in a few days. Meanwhile, all of my food would be spoiling. Shalom however listened to me, asked me to send her a photo of the fridge, confirmed "yup, it's over the hill old," and simply ordered me a brand new one within the hour. Period. No bullshit, no bureaucracy. She's fantastic. Shalom really cares about her tenants. There have been several instances like that now where I expected to go in and have to "do battle" with the landlord, but she just listened, said "yep, that's a problem, I'm sorry you have to deal with that," and "I'll get it fixed. Are you available today?" I have rented for decades now, and it is rare to find property management like this. Yes, the property is older and occasionally there are some issues. But with her looking after everything, I know we are well taken care of. She's a gem.

Big windows, in-unit washer/dryer, elevator, underground parking, all appliances, a small gym, security gates plus it's well suited for anyone who wants to walk out the door and get where they're going. But that's just the building. You can take a tour and decide if it suits you. What we really love is the property management team. Vicki, has been the Community Manager for 7+ years and has her finger on the pulse of the entire operation. Always with a smile, but also with a genuine interest in making sure residents' issues get resolved when they arise. In our first six months here, we've been amazed at how quickly our questions have been answered and how efficiently the inevitable move-in issues were handled. Then there's Carlos, the on-site Maintenance Supervisor. Everyone loves Carlos. He responds fast, assesses the situation, communicates every step of the way, and gets the job done. We've had a few things here and there that needed fixing, and every one of them was taken care of the same day. He can fix almost anything, and if he can't, he already has the vendors lined up to tackle the problem. No hedging. No stalling. He just gets it done. Together, Vicki and Carlos manage the 50+ units and the surrounding common areas. You can tell they're a team - and a damn good one at that. We love living here. Why should you pick Strauss over every other apartment building in the Bankers Hill/Hillcrest area? Because they don't have Elaine. There are also several bus routes nearby, so if you're a bus commuter like me, this location was great! And close proximity to Balboa Park just cannot be beat. Every neighbor we met was delightful, and if you didn't want to hear your neighbors, I swear not one time did we hear anyone through the walls. You would forget you even had neighbors. According to the website, it says that "Sorrento Tower is an independent-living apartment community that is conveniently located in the Clairemont area of San Diego." The tower can be seen for miles and it is located near beautiful Tecolote Canyon Preserve. Very close by and within a comfortable walking distance are stores, banks, restaurants, and a public library. Sorrento Tower has on-site management and maintenance personnel. A shared laundry facility, library, and media room, along with plenty of activities keep residents busy and enriched. All tenants must be pre-qualified, background checked and wait patiently on a current waiting list. I think Sorrento Tower is mighty nice. 4 YELP STARS nice.

Props to Jacque Mierop for always being available and attentive if any maintenance requests were needed and for communicating so effectively. After moving out of state, the checkout process was easy and my deposit was forwarded by mail promptly further demonstrating the professional of the manager(thanks again, Jacque for always doing things promptly).
