Was looking for something good for to eat while in the area and this was the first spot to pop up and this is exactly what I decided on. Pictures looked incredible and the reviews were good so I gave it a whirl. It's like a mom n pop type of joint but not so much, there's a bit of seating indoors with a bar also. There's tons of old "memorabilia" of old alcohol containers and New Orleans themed decor. They have plenty of good menu items to choose from but the waitress said they are known for their roast beef. Went ahead and got that as well as the meat pies for starters and onion rings, and my girl got the shrimp poboy. The meat pies were good and cooked to order (we arrived at 8:30pm on a Tuesday), the onion rings kind of let me down but they weren't terrible. They're battered really thick and the inside isn't as crispy. Her shrimp poboy was outstanding, I only had a bite or 2 and I was quite jealous. The roast beef was really good and a bit messy, not too wet but messy. There's a reason the reviews are high like they are. The waitress was very nice to us and they had a couple of guys together just kicking the with another older woman there. It's like everyone knows everyone over there and that's a great environment. This place has a lot of old school charm out on River Road not far from Destrehan Plantation. The menu has a VERY extensive history of the evolution of this place into its current form and makes for an interesting read. The ladies working here were very friendly and gave great service. I had visited this establishment at their previous location and this was my first visit to their current location. The prices seem to have not changed since my last visit at their previous location and the prices are a GREAT value here so this is a VERY affordable restaurant and bar. St. Rose Tavern offers a selection of changing daily specials along with a selection of fried seafood plates and po boys. The medium shrimp po boy is the size of most other places large but had the shrimp a bit overcooked which made the shrimp on the tough side. The large 18 inch roast beef po boy seems like a lot of food and usually would give me the expectation I would have some left over. The roast beef po boy was imposing when I first unwrapped it and the French bread was perfectly toasted. The roast beef itself was good but there wasn't a great deal of it on the sandwich and there also wasn't a lot of gravy. The meat was adequately juicy but it just had a hint of gravy flavor that I wanted more of. The thin layer of meat enabled me to easily finish the entire 18 inches of the sandwich with no problem. As a point of comparison eating the "smaller" whole roast beef at R&O's leaves me far more full as there is a greater quantity of meat and the flavor of that po boy still leaves R&O's as my top choice for a roast beef po boy. St. Rose Tavern definitely makes a good roast beef and I will certainly return to this charming spot to sample more of their menu. read more

Nice place by the river. Looks like a normal house except for few signs, but inside has an old barn tavern feel. Mostly po-boys and few other items. The po-boy didn't come fast, but with toasted bread and strong flavor pulled beef. Good food with easy going down Mexican beer, the life is good by the river. Liedenheimer's bread. What else do you need to know? We had fried artichoke hearts, which were good (even with pre-packaged ranch dip). The guys with me had a catfish and a smoked turkey po-boys. They report "eh - pretty average." I had a stuffed shrimp po-boy. I've never seen that on any other menu. Sounded worth a try. The stuffed shrimp was basically a pre-made patty of stuffing, which was tasty, but not the home-made I was hoping for, and only a few tiny shrimp in the patty. Still, I'll be back. It was a bit odd that "dressed " at this place includes ketchup (only on the seafood, but not the others. Who does that?). No problem, just order with no ketchup. May not be the most stellar po-boy I've ever had (gotta go to Lafayette for that), but it's as good as any other in the area. I'll be back for more. And next time I'll remember to order fries. UPDATE: fries are hot and crispy. Not bad even if they are frozen crinkle cut. Shrimp po-boy is good - not the typical popcorn shrimp found on most po-boys, although they could be fried a bit longer. Omg this roastbeef melted in your mouth it wasn't any nasty deli meat thrown on there this was real roast good down with making a delicious debris gravy which I got a little side bowl and dipped that already delicious moist and juicy monster sized poboy in.. I also ordered a bacon cheese fry which was delicious, yes the fry's were the crinkle cut frozen type but they were cooked well and then smothered with a delicious mound of melted cheddar cheese and topped with loads of crunchy REAL fried crumbled bacon they were so good and had a side of ranch for dipping. St Rose Tavern is no longer in St Rose and is actually in New Sarpy. The old St Rose Tavern is now the Truck Farm Tavern and is in St Rose. Confused? Me too but the New Sarpy Tavern doesn't have the same ring to it or the history so St Rose Tavern it is. St Rose Tavern is part bar and part poboy shop/neighborhood restaurant. The menu is a few fried apps, salads, a couple pasta dishes, a big selection of po-boys and usually a daily special. On my last visit I got the grilled ham and swiss poboy which comes on Leidenheimer bread tells me they are real poboy shop. The ham was thick country ham, no deli slices here and the cheese was thicker as well none of that Kraft thin slice stuff. It hit the spot. The sammiches come in 3 sizes, small, large and I believe regular bread or bun. The sodas (no beer it was a work lunch) are in cans not fountain(boooo). Within the last year, the original St. Rose Tavern closed due to issues with the landowner of the property it sat upon. It looked like it would close for good, but earlier this year it found a new home a few miles upriver one town over in New Sarpy. The new locale looks pretty similar on the outside- complete with a tongue in cheek sign notating it's St. Rose Tavern now in New Sarpy. The inside has a similar kind of funky feel with its signature mismatched tables and chairs but the place has a slightly upgraded (less vintage feel) and some of the original vintage knick knacks and signage are no longer there. The food however is still the same, and there's even a sign to say that prices have not changed, which is nice. The roast beef po-boys are great and I'm a fan of the loaded fries. They also serve a lot of locally brewed beers. If you're out in the River Parishes, its worth stopping in at the new St. Rose Tavern on River Road. read more

The flavor was very delicious, one of the best I've ever had! But, the amount of the roast beef was thin. According to my friend, the amount of roast beef is now much less than at the former location. The bread was crispy and light. This is the "new" St. Rose Tavern. They relocated from their home of almost 70 years in St. Rose to a new location in New Sarpy. The new place is about 7 miles west of the old location on River Rd. (head west from 310 instead of east). The old Tavern was a sleepy, divey, bar/ restaurant with no aspirations beyond a comfortable eating experience. Recall that St. Rose Tavern was named on the 10 best roast beef Po-boys competition the Picyune ran a couple of years ago. The new place is much nicer, cleaner and less run down while still retaining the character. 8 - 10 seats at the bar, another ~25 table seats. It's family owned with no obvious interest in getting bigger. I've eaten hear a couple of times since the opening. First time was lunch in the first month - pretty much a disaster. This area supports the Norco industrial complex. Starting about 11 AM on weekdays, several thousand people want to eat lunch and several hundred of them head to the local restaurants. The tavern was not (and is still not) staffed to handle an influx of 50 - 100 people over the course of a couple of of hours. I heard it was slow, but assumed the bugs had been worked out when I dragged a group of 6 there for a Friday lunch. The food was fine, but just too slow for the work crowd. It took an hour to get in and out. Only one person working the bar and the floor and the phone and the take-out business - you get the idea. I noticed in passing by that the lunch crowds have diminished considerably in the weeks since then. I guess that is a good thing. Saturday evening about 6, dinner for two. Very casual, very friendly atmosphere. There was about maybe 15 - 20 people there. Amanda was working the floor, the bar, the phone, the take-out business - all very routine. She juggles well, touching base with the tables regularly, anticipates customer needs and services multiple tables at a time. I think the menu is pretty much the same. I noticed it included deep fried artichokes, something I wasn't familiar with so I gave them a try along with fries and a poboy. I do understand the southern axiom that anything can be deep fried. I think that artichokes disproves that truism. The french fries are nothing special, the poboys are tasty. I'm particularly impressed with the bread, they manage to keep it fresh regardless of the time of day. A couple of drinks, appetizers and po-boys takes an hour. It's a pleasant, leisurely affair. There is a slow stream of pick-ups and table turnover. Work that into your thinking, if you want to eat quickly, order ahead. $46 for two including drinks and tips. read more
