    Onion Rings
    Tanya O.

My family went for dinner on Friday night. We were seated fairly quickly. As someone said in another review, the service wasn't bad, but it was odd. Our waitress took our order without writing anything down, but didn't seem confident that she would remember what we ordered. She did and there were no errors. The lack of confidence just felt odd. The food was delicious. Not pictured is the beignet bread pudding. So good!!! It didn't have raisins (YAY!), it had a crisp crust, which I loved, and the sauce was really good. I will definitely get that again. Next time, I think we might get our food to go.

The service was definitely lacking. First as we were being seated the hostess said follow me and didn't wait for us to get up from the very dark waiting area. So I followed her into the wait station because she didn't show us our table. She pointed, we sat down. We then sat there for over 5 minutes for our server to come and take our drink order. Our server, I have no idea what her name was because she never told us, then took our order and then came back and informed me they were out of roast beef. This was 5:30ish local time. So we started with onion rings, which I highly recommend! I wish now we would have tried the gator spring rolls too but a girl can only eat so much... just wait.... Well they were out of roast beef. I know, I know, it's a Cajun restaurant but I've had so much Cajun I just needed some good ole beef. So I ended up getting a grilled chicken poboy. Chicken was seasoned well but was too thick and tough for a sandwich. Plus the bread was hard which made it even harder to eat. The chicken just kept falling out of the bread and I ended up eating it with a knife and fork. It was HUGE! 12" at least! And it didn't come with a side dish. Cut the sandwich size I half and give me an option of sides and for the price I'd pay the same. Honey enjoyed his dinner but didn't get what he ordered! He ordered Half and half and ended up being served Thibodaux which is stuffed crab and crawfish in cream sauce. He says it was delicious. We didn't care he didn't get what he ordered because we watched a lady at the table across from us sit and wait for her dinner until everyone else at her table (4 folks) were done eating. (Her boyfriend/Hubby's dinner got cold while he waited for her to be able to eat too and they both ended up taking their full dinners to go). Also the server who took our order was not the same person who put our order into the kitchen. We know this because she came back and asked about our side orders because she couldn't read the other girls writing. The restaurant still looks mostly the same as it did when #RestaurantImpossible got through with it. There was an ugly couple of two x fours just hanging on the wall behind me where a Gator sign used to hang, as seen on RI. Hang a picture there already! Plastic over the oars that separate the center of the restaurant which I'm sure was there because of COVID but really not unnecessary. And it was very dark in there! Idk if I'd eat there again. There are SO many 4+ starred restaurants in the area. Maybe it was just a bad night. Somehow, I don't think so.

Very convenient location right off base if your wanting something close. It looks fun and inviting on the outside. On the inside it looked cleaned and well laid out. When we first walked in we weren't sure if we were suppose to just sit or wait to be seated there was a hostess table but no hostess or a sign anywhere that said "please wait to be seated" or "please seat yourself" so we stood around for a bit until someone finally came out. She wasn't very friendly, it was kind of awkward, I instantly lost interest in being there. The waitress was even more quiet and dry. The food was okay I would recommend the food if you like seafood. The place was clean but the service really killed it for me. It's ok, I guess, if you want something quick or to go.

    Shrimp & Grits

So have been here a few times and it's been a good experience for the most part. In fact last time we came in my son ordered the shrimp and grits and really liked them. Well yesterday I bring my other son in and he orders the shrimp and grits and it was a mess. In fact he couldn't eat it as you can tell by the following picture. I asked the server if this was normal cooked this way and she said I'm not sure I don't work in the kitchen. So I responded with but you bring it to the table. She replied yes that's how they make it. We have eaten shrimp and grits before all over this city and this is the first time it looked like a butter gumbo with shrimp. So eater beware if this is how they normally present this dish. If it's not train your staff better

    Jambalaya pasta - my FAVORITE!!!!
    Katie H.

I may or may not (...okay, who am I kidding? I totally do) have an obsession with the food at this place. We live on base right down the road so whenever I'm craving some yummy home cooked southern comfort food, this is THE go-to. We've been several times since we moved here and our experience has varied... but the food has been consistently amazing. The service is just okay. It's better when they're less busy, which is true for most places it seems, but almost non-existent when it's packed. The wait will be long, your drinks won't be refilled, nobody will come to check on you... but when those glowing golden trays of deliciousness come out, you'll forget alllllll those things that put you off about the place. My absolute favorite menu selections here are the Jambalaya Pasta (or Pasta Jambalaya? You get the idea) and their fried pickles. The pasta is SO DAMN GOOD. So flavorful, spicy, and - don't kill me - but I order it without shrimp as I'm not a big seafood eater. The dish still has chicken and sausage which is a perfect meat combo for me! We've also tried the soft shell crab (delish), Caesar salad (delish), onion rings (just ok, too light and flaky, not greasy enough for my liking), Alligator sausage (surprisingly good, the first time I've ever had gator) and the crab came with a potato on the side (also delish). Aside from the food, the atmosphere is pretty neat. Taxidermy on the walls, a really cool bar setup, and a video poker room. When it's not busy, we've seated ourselves without an issue but when it's busy, we've waited for an employee to direct us where to sit. My only complaint is that it's a little crowded and when it is busy, you can hear the conversations of everyone around. Very little elbow room. BUT, parking is ample... HUGE lot dedicated just to the restaurant and it's so easy to get to. Love this place and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a place that will fill your belly with great food and have you leaving with a smile. P.S. the food is pretty inexpensive, so your wallet will be happy, too!

Ordered the seafood platter - 3 items - fish, shrimp, and stuffed crab with fries to go. See the picture for what I actually received - 1 piece of fish, 5 shrimp, some mangy fries, and two crab cakes. I understand we are in hard times and I support when I am able and can. However, this is not a seafood platter. It's more like a $15 plate not $22. Really disappointed because I like Lil Gs.

Great place to eat and was so good We came back for dinner. Service awesome Food great quality and taste Clean restaurant and peaceful We had catfish, which was perfectly fried, potato salad and Cajun potato, seafood gumbo and potato shrimp soup. Everything was so good, we came back twice. Would have come back again if they were open Sunday. Keep us the great work! We will be back.

This was actually my first real seafood boil experience, and it was my wife's first seafood boil as well, so we really did not know exactly what to expect. Thankfully, we had Jaden as our waitress, and she was amazing from beginning to end. She was attentive, friendly, patient with us, and helped explain everything since we were both new to the whole seafood boil experience. Having someone willing to help you instead of making you feel like you should already know what you are doing makes a huge difference. We went with the all you can eat special, and when that food started hitting the table, we knew we had made the right decision. There was a ton of food with shrimp, snow crab, blue crab, sausage, corn, potatoes and everything covered in some seriously good seasoning. The seasoning was one of my favorite parts because it had plenty of flavor without taking away from the seafood itself. My favorite was definitely the shrimp. I could have kept eating those by themselves. They were seasoned perfectly, had great flavor, and were easily what I kept going back for. Then we tried the charbroiled oysters. I have to say that oysters really are not my thing, so I was not expecting them to be one of the highlights of the meal. I was completely wrong. These were awesome. The charbroiled flavor completely changed it for me, and I actually enjoyed eating them. My wife was impressed too, and that says a lot more than my opinion because she grew up eating oysters in New Zealand. If she says the oysters are good, I am listening! Another thing we really appreciated was that we never felt rushed. We sat there for around an hour and 15 minutes eating, cracking crab legs, trying everything, talking, and just enjoying ourselves. Nobody made us feel like they were waiting for us to leave. Jaden continued checking on us and making sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. And yes, a seafood boil is messy. By the end of it, you know you have been eating! But that is part of the experience. You are cracking shells, dipping seafood, getting seasoning everywhere and enjoying every minute of it. For someone who would normally say this type of meal is not really my thing, Salvo's completely changed my mind. Great seafood, awesome seasoning, huge portions, a relaxed atmosphere, and excellent service from Jaden made this a great experience for both of us. We will definitely be coming back. Next time I already know where I am starting: bring me the shrimp and those charbroiled oysters!

I wanted to eat here, really I did…read more I was in town last week for work and a coworker and I made the 45 minute drive from where we were staying to Salvo's. Google said they were open, but when we got there, we found out they were closed and on vacation the week before the 4th of July. I'm not really mad about that but there was nothing on their social media about being closed or away that week. I called a couple of times on our drive over and no one answered but the locals we worked with said this place is hopping during dinner time, we just assumed it was really busy and they couldn't get to the phones. A little better communication would have been appreciated, especially in a city where tourism is such an important industry for them. I'm sure the locals who eat there all the time knew they would be closed that week, but us out of towners did not know. So I'll go right in the middle, three stars as I can't really judge them on their food. However I work in a customer facing field too, and communication with your customer base is key. That really bummed me out. Maybe next time.

I went today with family members and we all ordered different items from the menu. Everyone was well pleased with the flavor of the food and the amount of food on the plate. I like fried egg plant and today I ate the best egg plant appetizer that I ever had! Fried thin and crispy with a honey glazed sauce. Wow! It was great. Let me tell you something. We just finished a swamp tour in the Louisiana bayou -- gators, cypress…read moretrees, Spanish moss, the whole magnificent thing -- and we were hungry, a little wild-eyed, and in desperate need of a meal worthy of the morning we just had. Restaurant des Familles delivered in every single way. We ordered the crab cakes, the turtle soup, and the étouffée, and I am not being dramatic when I say all three were absolutely out of this world. The crab cakes were perfect -- crispy outside, sweet and fresh inside, no filler, no shortcuts. The turtle soup was rich and deeply seasoned in that only-in-Louisiana way that makes you close your eyes on the first spoonful. And the étouffée? Silky, buttery, loaded with flavor. Every single dish tasted like someone's grandmother made it with love and a lifetime of knowing exactly what she was doing. But beyond the food -- this place is just beautiful. Tucked right into the bayou, quiet and unhurried, with that warm Louisiana hospitality that makes you feel like a welcome guest rather than a table to turn. We walked in as road-tripping strangers and left feeling like we'd found one of the best kept secrets in the whole state. If you are anywhere near Barataria, whether you just came off a swamp tour or you made the drive specifically for this -- stop here. You will not regret a single bite. Restaurant des Familles is the real deal.
