When Father Mario arrived at St. Stephen Church, the choir that sang at his masses tagged along with him. My sisters would talk about how different the services are because it's so lively and peppy now! Time seems to pass by quickly! TRANSFORMATION OF A BUILDING The entire building, next to St. Stephen Church, used to be a convent for the Sisters. Currently,the Chapel of St. Catherine consists of offices, a kitchen, meeting rooms, and the Chapel. I really appreciate the new doors, the updated chairs, wider sidewalks, covered pathways, and the fabulous stained glass windows! Much of the renovation is because of Father Mario's carpentry, gardening, masonry and other skills and talents. He really is the Jack of All Trades! His vision and business-mindedness has really improved the building! There's free parking, air conditioning, and a convenient restroom. Go early to secure your seat because it can get crowded - especially on special occasions such as Feast Days. If you're lucky, there may be snacks after mass - just bring something in case there's a Social Hour! Don't be surprised if you're invited to Bible Study; or Adoration on the first Wednesday of every month! MASS SCHEDULE: Daily mass (Monday through Saturday) is at 8:00 am. Instead of having mass at St. Stephen Church (2747 Pali Highway in Honolulu, HI), the parishioners celebrate mass in this cozy and intimate setting with acapella singing. Sunday mass is at 7:15 am. For early birds, this mass features a guitar and singing by a few choir members. There's no space for the piano and other instruments. MELTING A COLD HEART I admit that I'm a bit resistant to change. The former priest was okay - I was just used to the routine. So - when Father Mario arrived 25 months ago, I thought that he was trying too hard. Why did he want to talk to me all of the time? Why couldn't he get my name right? My brother in law (BIL) felt the same way. One day, when I saw BIL at morning mass, in his sheriff uniform, I realized how Father Mario's sincere friendliness can get a non-Catholic to join in the celebration. In that instant, it all came together and I was able to accept and understand... So - if you're curious and/or you want an interesting experience, come to the Chapel of St. Catherine!

Since it was our first time we were given beautiful prayer beads. While we waited for service to begin, a few members approached us with heartfelt greetings. "Not too much, not too little, but just right." Children's artistic drawings of the Easter story were posted around the sanctuary. "Well done good and faithful servants. Well done." St. Patrick Church - in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii - was the chosen site to Bless the ashes of my cousin, Robin, because she had attended the attached Elementary School and had gone to mass here with her parents and siblings. It was the best setting because St. Patrick Church is the home parish for my cousin's family. The free parking lot, historical architecture - including grand archways colorful stained glass windows, excellent acoustics (the soloist: Robin's younger sister, the readers: Robin's mom and elder sister, the pianist, and the harpist sounded heavenly), and solid marble foundation - were much appreciated! There was no air conditioning. I sat near the open doors at the back of the church. The cool April morning breeze was sufficient. I saw electric fans along the walls which are probably used in the summer. The restrooms were outside and to the left. I didn't use the facilities and didn't hear of any complaints. Father Clyde presided over the Prayer Service. He was efficient and personable. He had listened to Robin's husband's eulogy and made appropriate comments about the sweet, young couples' partnership in his Homily! I had met Father when he signed the Guest Book. He welcomed us (there were four of us at the Reception Table) and kindly asked if we needed anything. Outside, on the covered walkway, a table was set up for each guest to take a bento lunch home. The tradewinds were gentle and the sunshine was warm. It was a beautiful day at a wonderful place which held many memories for my cousin, her classmates, coworkers, friends, and family!

This was my 1st visit to the church during Sunday mass. My previous visit was for a wedding many…read moreyears ago, My family and in-laws were here for my nephew's baptism. We sat on the pews which faced the altar. The baptism had a candle lighting that was done by the god mother of my nephew. The father read from his handbook about for the spiritual message and process. Some people were hot because there were not enough windows inside so air can come nor any electric fans. People had to use a manual fan. Anyways, Samoa church choir sang in English. I thought there was a certain dress code that people needed to follow. Some people wore jeans and slippers. Overall, there were nice stained glasses.

I enjoy attending the sacrament of reconciliation here as well as the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (conducted in Latin). My humble membership in the Latin choir here had not only deepened my understanding of the Roman liturgy (both Extraordinary and Ordinary forms) but it also has improved my knowledge of the Latin language, improved my chanting and polyphonic execution, and improved my reading ability way past the level of reading I was at back in college as a member of a scholastic choir. Since music reading (a.k.a sight reading) is just like any other kind of reading in the fact that proficiency and mastery is a direct proportion of how often you practice, participation here and at the monthly First Friday and First Saturday liturgies has truly improved my poor skills. The wonderful people here have truly made an impact in my life. Music liturgy aside, this is a fairly nice parish that's welcoming and steeped in history. Current pastor, Fr Steve Nguyen is a young, straight forward priest who is pastoral, kind and well steeped in theology. His homilies are hard hitting and based on bedrock truths... they force me off my "complacencies", away from my selfish tendencies, and towards greater actions of love and service to others (note: Christ also taught that complacency and comfort is not the path to heaven) Highly recommend a visit here if you're in the area and looking for a Peaceful place to worship our loving Lord and true God. I really like the big screens that show the songs at appropriate times - this eliminates the need for hymnals and thus being better for the environment! I also enjoy the air conditioning - the two churches that I visit in town do not have a/c. Sometimes I see coworkers at mass - it kinds strange seeing them outside of work - like...hey!! what are you doing here? Oh, yeah - you have a life, too! Father Herman is a good guy. He's humble and down-to-earth. It's easy to understand his homilies - which is important for me. I had met him in person as I went to a class at St. Ann's with my co-worker, called "Catholics Returning Home". We both learned a lot. I never went to Sunday School because my elementary and high schools were Catholic. Recently, I had an emergency & I needed a place to go have a good cry. It was not during regular church hours, but I tried the door of the chapel... it was open! I spent a few minutes by myself in the presence of the Lord, reflecting on the meaning of life and pondered the mystery of death and why my friend, Lucille, was taken from this earth in such a strange fashion. I was able to compose myself and write a few lines in the Book of Special Intentions near the door of the chapel. I felt at peace and that my prayers would be answered... Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May Lucille's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

St. Ann's is a perfect example. Granted Fr. Herman is awesome, but I think it's because he is a true local guy. He went to Damien for high school! Not to say that priests from outside the state aren't great, but being effective at connecting with the local people is a great help. That's one of the main reasons why I give this place 5 stars. St. Ann's is a newer built church so it has the ac and projector screens etc. I do find the ac on the cooler side, so I try to have sleeves or a sweater on. This makes me think of the churches in Italy where it's required to have your shoulders covered when you enter. Parking in the lot is adequate, but be prepared to wait to exit after Mass. If you need to be somewhere in a hurry, park on haikū road, but careful crossing the street if you're on the mall side.

She attends Sunday service here because it's less crowded, has free parking, and is convenient for her. I decided to have an adventure. I drove out to the Kahala area and sit next to my friend. It was interesting because most of the mass is in English and some parts are in Chinese. Father Paul greeted us in Mandarin. One of the readers spoke in Cantonese. The Homily by Father Paul started in English... Then, he switched to Mandarin and presented his Homily again. Instead of using missalettes (prayer books), there are overhead monitors that display the prayers and responses in both English and Chinese. That's cool! I really enjoyed the music. The male soloist and piano player were quite good! I wanted to sing along, but my friend whispered to me that singing is not encouraged because it could potentially spread COVID. Hmmm! The doors were all open to take advantage of the natural cross ventilation from the tradewinds. The ceiling fans were also being used as well as some floor fans. The statues were intriguing! I was able to recognize St. Christopher, St. Francis, St. Therese, Our Lady of Fatima, and Mother Mary! It was a comforting feeling to be in the presence of greatness! Overall, I had a great experience here! Maybe I will visit more often because it was calm and pleasant!

But, it makes me so sad to see such a beautiful gothic church only to walk in and see giant tv screens on the back wall like it's some kind of conference room. It also breaks my heart to see a choir loft with no choir, and a beautiful organ with no one to play it. Then on top of that, the music is recordings of a piano playing sappy 60s songs and butchering the ancient hymns of our faith. This beautiful parish has so much potential and it would make me so happy to see it flourish with a full choir and an organist and a more reverent liturgy with incense. I will be praying for a restoration of this parish and the diocese.

The only downfall causing me to give it four rather than five star rating is the music ministry is very substandard and is screaming for help and more importantly, new leadership. A brand new state-of-the-art Allen organ, an organ the could mimic a very large pipe organ, was installed in the choir loft about 15 years ago when the church had undergone a major renovation. Very sadly, there has never been a COMPETENT (emphasis strongly added) ORGANIST to play it on a regular basis for Sunday mass. There some that have come to play it sporadically (far from consistently), however they are very overwhelmed and are unsure how to play it. To the best of my knowledge the organ is been sitting idle collecting dust. To its credit, Sacred Heart Parish is not alone in the Roman Catholic Dioces of Honolulu, when compared with other Catholic Dioceses across the US mainland and abroad, the diocese Honolulu has done a very paltry job (if any at all) at taking care of organs, pipe organs, and organists in general and that stems from the leadership at the top. Members of The Kai'ulani Choir sang beautiful hymns throughout the service, and a loving Hula was performed to start off the evening's program. What a spiritual experience it was sitting in this church, looking around at the Altar and the stained glass windows, feeling the cool evening breeze flow through the sanctuary. Although I'm not a religious person, I would consider coming back for a Sunday Mass.
