Yes, you are going to pay a premium for shopping here, but in terms of variety - taste - quality and service, you won't be disappointed. We lived across the street for 8 months and Stadium became our defacto place to eat and shop. Definitely not the place to stock up on basics - but when you are in the mood for something hot and tasty from the deli, or the beer and wine selection, this is the place to go. Staff is super friendly and the butcher section is varied and fresh. Produce selection is varied, but trends to the higher side of price, especially the organic selection. This grocery store is the best and only one in the neighborhood. I like the various hot and cold foods. I always buy the veggie samosas and the sandwiches here because it's surprisingly bomb. It's super clean and organized inside. The price of goods might be a little more compared to a Safeway but you pay for good quality. The sandwiches here (although a bit expensive) are stellar. I bought a sandwich, and a bag of chips proceeded to the self-check our area, rung up my items and took them out front where ST provides picnic benches to eat. It was nice outside today so I decided to eat out there. After I was finished I came back into the store seeking a restroom to wash my hands. I inquired with the self-check representative at the time if they had a restroom, she annoyingly replied with "No" followed by a "restrooms are for customers only" in a stern, unwilling demeanor about her responses. Now I know she just saw me earlier while I was buying my lunch yet still I had to disclose that I am a "customer"..."I just bought a sandwich" which then she proceeded to give me the code for the bathroom. Although this may seem harmless; I was quite offended by not only her responses but her disposition and lack of customer awareness. I'm totally appalled and it's unfortunate this has happened because I will no longer be shopping here for anything anymore. read more

Well welcome to the throwback called Stadium Thriftway! 8 months ago we moved into the Stadium district in downtown Tacoma and needed a local grocery outlet. Little did I know we were in for a huge treat. Now as a former customer and huge fan of Metropolitan Market, I can honestly say Stadium Thriftway is now my all time favorite. The produce is amazing, just seems to be taste better and very fresh. The meat department is not bad, could have more stuff in the cabinet. Seems heavy on seafood. The real gem in my mind, the deli! Oh man, I eat lunch and/or dinner her probably 3-4 times a week. The taco salad, turkey gobbler sandwich, salt and vinegar buffalo wings, chicken enchilada. I can go on for days, every single thing I've tried has been well above average for grocery store deli food. Do yourself a favor and stop by! read more

These guys do a really good job in a small space, in a neighborhood that needs more than quicky-marts, but doesn't have too much space for a full-on huge supermarket. If you're shopping for ten bags of groceries to feed a big family for the coming week, you might end up driving farther to a bigger store, but this place can get any size household through a couple days. The parking is a bit of a merry-go-round, and there are a TON of new businesses on the block in the last couple years. The prices are not the cheapest around, and they don't have the widest selection. But the quality is there, and they cover all the basics you need from a supermarket, with several nice touches. They have full-on floral, produce, meat, fish, deli, bakery, and other perishables on offer. The packaged-goods selection is equal to most places in town, for staple items. The staff are friendly and funny and very approachable. In the summer, they have a barbecue once a week, and at the start of fall they have a huge sale on fresh lobster. I wouldn't buy 100% of my groceries here because I am stingy, but for quick stops where you're not completely re-stocking the entire pantry, this place is tough to beat. read more

Like many others, I'm in the position that Stadium Thriftway is my only walking-distance grocery store. The parking lot sucks, like so many parking lots in the Stadium District. Why are there always a million huge trucks down here? Who drives those and shops at Stadium? The selection is a little strange, I can usually find something that works for what I need but rarely the thing I went for. The store is far larger and far brighter than it used to be - a welcome change! Trick-or-treat time around here, though, is awesome. The store really goes out of its way to make sure the kids have a good time and they hand out some awesome goodies. This year they had a photobooth set up for kids and some posing pumkins as well. I really feel like they may not be as cheap as Top Foods or have as much as Metropolitan Market but they really go out of their way to be part of the neighborhood. read more

While shopping yesterday, I saw a hot pink "sale" signs in the kombucha case "buy one, get one free; I selected two bottles of Synergy, Guava, located directly behind on of said signs; I proceeded to self-checkout and scanned the bottles to find no discount registered; I asked the monitor clerk why no discount was applied, she asked me to wait while she apparently went back to the case; she returned and said the sign referred to "other brands next to the sign"; I told her to remove the items from my bill; BUYER BEWARE OF MISLEADING SIGNAGE THAT LIKELY RESULTS IN MOST CUSTOMERS BEING CHARGED REGULAR PRICES WHEN LED TO BELIEVE AN ITEM IS ON SALE! This is a nice little market. I stopped in on the recommendation of my friend who lives near by. She said that I had to try the Bimbo's meat sauce, which is apparently made weekly by the chef of the former restaurant. Having never been to the former Bimbo's or tried it, I could only go on her word of mouth. I picked up a large serving of the meat sauce (in the chill chest, about $12), and also found Bimbo's lasagna ($13). Over the course of a few days, I tried both. I have to say, while they are both great, I really loved the lasagna the best. It served 2 perfectly. There was tons of cheese on top, so I didn't add more, but I did cook it about 15 min. longer than recommended. Yum, as good as any restaurant. As for the sauce, I tried to warm it slowly so it wouldn't break, but ultimately it did become slightly greasy. It also is VERY intensely flavored. I only had it on noodles, but I think baking it into a casserole with something else (like lots of melty cheese!) to counter balance the intensity would help. Overall, the market is very cute and reasonably sized. They have an interesting liquor selection as well as a fabulous bakery. I would return for sure. read more

This market store has been in Tacoma, forever. I absolutely love that it's across from Stadium high school & downtown tacoma mars hill church. If you enjoy gourmet cheeses, assorted pastries, and a yummy deli, then this market is definitely for you! Prices are a little bit higher but for the fresh produce and lively staff, I am always willing to pay more. Also, if you go to their ice cream section, it is the most exciting part! They have choices from high end local creameries: full tilt, old fashioned custard, Lopez creamery, whidbey island ice cream. This store also offer free parking in their parking lot, making things a lot easier in a bustling city. Ask for a weekly flyer, they offer excellent cuts of beef and fresh caught fish. read more

Maybe my only suggestion is more options in the deli department for turkey? I used to by my meats at Safeway, and after buying here, I don't want to get protein anywhere else. It's so good. They run sales every week on something, it's fresh and tastes amazing no matter what we cook with it. This place has really gone down hill! I have been coming here for years and my last trip made me not want to return. I usually get a Taco salad with no shell. Well, this time the portion was 3x smaller for the same price. There was like 3 pieces of chicken and very little of the other ingredients. It was almost comical until I mentioned it to the young girl who obviously didn't care. After I purchased the tiny salad, I left and went to my car. As I was pulling out I noticed one of the managers standing behind my car looking at me crazy as I tried to pull out slowly. Finally, I pulled out and he immediately blocked off that parking spot. I parked my car in another stall and went back in to ask what the issue was. He said, "oh nothing just blocking off that spot." You don't know what trauma people have endured. I would suggest not cornering people in the parking lot like that ever again. I may not return at least for a long time until they get it together. I do not like you Stadium Thrift. I do not like your selection. Somehow you manage to balance carrying uninteresting "higher end" items with too small a selection of every day ones. I do not like your quality. The last deli item I picked up out of desparation was a pesto salad that walked the line of just being decent enough to make me shrug my shoulders. I bought some "high end" extra large avocadoes you featured, cut into them when I got home and they were mealy, putrid. The meat and bakery departments were better before your expansion...that in itself is saying something! I do not like your prices. It's not just about cost, it's about value. As stated, I shrugged my shoulders over the above mentioned pesto salad and cursed I spent $9.00 per pound on it...because it went to a party and sat barely touched. Your produce prices are high and no longer deliver the quality of old. Most of all, I do not like your lack of customer service. Granted, it was worse "back in the day"...I've stood, ignored, waiting to pay for things in times past while clerks have gossiped. I've sometimes watched staff be rude to people of color. I'm adding a star to reflect how awesome all of the cashiers are. They do a really good job and are always fantastic. I never leave in a grumpy mood and it's thanks to their genuine personalities and effort. Thriftway has a redbox competitor that releases hit movies prior to redbox, and at $.30 less per day rental :) Normally, the parking is scary! - Large SUV's and monster trucks in compact parking spaces and high strung, negligent dog owners impatiently circling the lot with their eyes bugging out behind square glasses... Honking in a hurry to get their $6 gluten free bagels... Geez. I honestly only come here late at night when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to drive. In desperate need of cheap overpriced wine. Other than the cleanliness of the store itself, not much stands out as great here. Employee wise it's bleak and dead on the floor, but the cashiers are very nice. Customer wise, someone is always at your heels with a cart or breathing down your neck. read more

I go to Stadium Thriftway at least 5 days a week. Often times I go for lunch, as they have so many options. I could potentially get something different every day of the week. Most often I get the California Club Sand which. Turkey, Avocado, Bacon...the perfect sandwich really. I am obsessed recently with the Northwest Favorite Salad. Mixed greens with bleu cheese, walnuts, cranberries etc. The burritos are very fresh and often generously prepared, sometimes bursting through the tortilla. They also serve soup, with at least 6 varieties a day and they change often. I love the staff working the deli area also. They are hard working and seem like really fun people. Happy Hour on Thursdays offer good deals, and Open House events keep bringing me back for more. The people working checkout are almost always friendly (I say almost because let's face it: everyone has an off day!) I always really enjoy chatting with them as I pay for groceries or Lunch. The coffee stand connected to the store serves Seattle's Best coffee which is OK but the ladies working the stand are always so sweet. They are all well humored and I always leave smiling. Yes, the groceries are a bit over priced. Heck, even lunch is over priced if you ask me. But I really enjoy my experience here regularly. I am happy to support the Thriftway. read more

Great people & wonderful customer service. A little on the pricey side but they have grade A produce unlike other chain stores that have B grade or C grade i.e.(Wal-Mart). I would categorize the store as a boutique grocery store with ultra fresh meats and seafood's, great deli and the lunch counter is excellent. Parking is a pain in the ass as it is shared with three or four other businesses and with the addition of an apartment complex across the street and a restaurant upstairs soon to open, I can only see it getting worse. Thank God I live close enough to walk and make my daily pilgrimage down to get food/goodies for the day. Let me give an extra special five star shout out to the guy who runs the liquor/wine/beer/cider section of the store. Over the years he has brought it from ho-hum to sheer awesomeness and I applaud his efforts. read more

Thanks to your staff member, a female, first name starts with "J", working at the lotto/checkout stand on duty yesterday, I may have to say goodbye to the Painted Hills beef I mostly come in for. Our conversation went like this: Me: Hi! Could you please tell me where you keep the ice tea in bottles? Her: If we carry it, it's on aisle 7 or in the cold case. Me: Um, well, I looked over on the soda pop aisle, and didn't see it. Is that aisle 7? Her: I said if we have it would be with the pop. Me: Yes, I heard you, but is that aisle 7, or is there another pop aisle? Her: If we have multipacks they are on aisle 7. Singles, if we have any are in the cold case. Me: Lady, can you just tell me yes or no? Her: I already told you. Me: Ima gonna go ask someone else. Now, I just wanna buy my meat and get outta there. I move to another checkstand, where the guy asks if I found "everything". No, I answer, without elaborating. He asks if I want paper and plastic. I answer, pay and leave. Thriftway is the only optiion for groeceries in the Stadium District. With that said, it seems as if the higher powers have recognized this and adjusted prices becuase of its monopoly in the area. I live halfway between the Stadium Thriftway and the Proctor Safeway. I find myself wanting to support small business but I would rather the pay the same prices and go to Metropolitian Market. This is by no means a high end market. Imagine a smaller selection than the Proctor Safeway, but more expensive. I also don't believe the service is better either. Maybe because I am young they never cared to learn my name like all the customers that look like their worth money, but I don't feel like I belong there. I only go here on occassion now if I need something on the way home. Prices, service and selection are not great for a newly modeled grocery of this size, but their deli is decent. But again, go less than five minutes downt the road and get gourmet for the same price at Met. Market. read more

At first I wasn't a fan. Initially it seemed like an over priced Safeway. I am now a regular and a fan! Here it is section by section, department by department. Produce: The produce selection is always fresh and in good condition. Priced a bit high sometimes but overall good quality. Flowers: I am slightly obsessed with their flower section. They always have all the seasonal flowers/plants and exotic plants and flowers you wouldn't expect in a grocery store such as Gingers and Heliconias. LOVE IT!! Deli: I am in luuuove with the Maui Wowee panini! Like I said in my "Quick Tip" it is an orgasmic experience. A nice crisp panini smothered in wowee sauce sandwiching ham, provolone, and artichokes. Noch, noch! If the Maui Wowee isn't for you the Chipotle Club is pretty good too. I suggest ordering your sandwich before shopping as it takes about 5 minutes to toast. Across from the deli is the soups which pair perfectly with the hot sandwiches. The selection is changed daily and there is even a hot line to call ahead to see what the soup selection is for the day. Cheeses and Cold Case: Great cheese selection and the cold case carries a great selection of noodles, pasta, salads and much more! Frozen Food: Ehh I have seen better but it's not bad. They do carry quite a bit of organic frozen food. Meat Department: AMAZING! Good cuts, quality, and service. They rarely have short ribs however and that has been a big bummer for me but with a little therapy I have been able to move on. :) Beer: Great selection of growlers to cases. Decently priced. I live close by so I walk to the store which is good because the store has been nicknamed "Theft"way due to the high prices. The thing that troubles me the most is the lack of customer service in the deli section. Often the employees seem to go out of their way to avoid helping customers and deliver at best an attitude of "I don't care" that really detracts from the store. Given that it is the only grocery store in Downtown Tacoma the attitude seems to be "what are you going to do? Go someplace else?" This is too bad because even though it has been remodeled it could be so much more. If you live close by it is the best choice we have. I bought deviled eggs here and a Red Barron pizza. When I want something tough, I think of my starting quarterback, my Ford truck (built Ford tough), or even some kind of repair made; but, not a deviled egg. I thought, maybe it's just that it was refrigerated too cold? While I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, I knew other deviled eggs were refrigerated and tasted delicious! They are the first thing to go at ANY party you attend. It's always a sure win to be the dude showing up with DE's. Your stock immediately rises. You could probably break an expensive vase and still leave smelling like a rose, all because of the deviled egg! That's how remarkable the invention of the DE is. Sorry Alexander Graham Bell, I know verizon thinks you're all that, but not me, you have to take a back seat to the almighty Devilled Egg! SO...the take home message? Yep, don't be the dude showing up with DE's from the Stadium Thriftway, because if you break a vase unintentionally, you surely will be forking out some cash for it's replacement. If you've never been to a Manhattan grocery store and you live in Tacoma, then come here. The size, prices and selection are the same. Every aisle is cramped because the store is so small. That's where the similarities end, though. The employees are friendly and helpful. They have a decent flower section, an indoor coffee stand (if you don't want to pay Tully's prices) and often, in the afternoons, an employee will fire up a grill and cook you lunch :D. I try not to shop here because it's expensive. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that they gave me a great discount when I bought huge bunches of tulips for my wedding 2 years ago. I hate to pay retail on almost everything so I thought "what the hell..." The florist was great. She gave me a great deal on bouquets of tulips, loose bunches of tulips and wedding party corsages and boutonnieres. Think it's tacky? Don't knock it until you've priced regular florists... There were some awesome variety's of cheese, and several items that you just won't find in regular stores. I've read through some of the other reviews. I have to say, "not in the best area" is sort of far fetched. For Tacoma, this is one of the nicer areas. As for pricing, some have stated they are high. Well, as it is a down town locaiton they are of course adjusting for the real estate locale. Prices are as they would be if this store was IN Seattle. While I do appreciate this Thriftway for the specialty deli and the incredible assortment of cheeses, I have to throw back a star for the seafood department. I wanted to make hand crafted cab cakes for my husband and I. When I called this store (as they are minutes away from my work), they stated they not only had fresh KING crab but that it was better/easier to make crab cakes with that than the lump crab meat I was inquiring about. It's my first try so, sure. Why not. On that trek, the gent went on to say that they actually make fresh crab cakes for purchase and are pre packaged the same morning and for sale in that dept. I have an hr commute home to Seattle from Tacoma, am 7 months pregant and while make crab cakes from scratch sounded more than appealing-when offered the easier route of buying fresh crab cakes pre made sounded like an even better plan. Imagine my dissapointment after venturing here, getting the cakes and some other side items, then getting ALL the way home to realize-they are maybe 1/3 crab meat but also filled with shrimp. Wish that guy on the phone had mentioned it. I made up four crab cakes, my husband and I each had a little bit of one crab cake and we tossed the rest. For future reference, please label your "crab cakes" as "seafood cakes". That's actually what they are. I won't come back to this store. $60 in groceries when I could have gotten crab meat and my other groceries for half of that on my way home instead. Side bar: Their customer service is pretty great, aside from this incident I've always had accurate service with a smile. read more

This is the neighborhood grocery store, and I tend to frequent Stadium Thriftway. Yes, I will sometimes go to Safeway if I've got a big shopping trip in store for cheaper prices but it's so nice to be able to come here (late too!) and pick up a package of bacon for late night BLTS or their homemade soup on a cold day. They aren't the least expensive grocery store, but it can be worth it if you're short on time. The cashiers and workers are always friendly and I can usually find what I want here...not a good selection of hard cider though! Their deli selection can be pretty tasty as well. read more

I've heard about this place and driven by it countless of times as I have never had a need to shop here since I don't live in the area but since I was next door waiting for my truck, I decided to check out what all the hype is about their infamous Deli?!? I have co-workers that rave about this place and I've tasted a couple of things from here and they were pretty delish. I hadn't had a bite since breakfast and it was going on 3pm so my eyes were going everywhere, but I wanted chicken and something my toddler could eat too, so I went with a meal that included a thigh, leg and jojos for $3.99, not bad? They have both baked and fried, I opted for baked and it was very tasty and juicy. I added a couple of their salt & vinegar wings that I've had before because I just couldn't resist! YUM! The deli was steady busy but moved fast, I didn't even get a chance to look at ALL the yummies but if I'm in town again and need a quick bite I will definately stop by again. read more

Living halfway between Stadium Thriftwasy and Met Market, I increasingly come here (another advantage is its proximity to the Parkway). The Met's remodel seems to be going in full rococo direction now with the prepared food section taking up the bulk of the entry. I guess this is what people want. I enjoy the Thrifty post-remodel (it's now been a couple years). Much improved meat and fish section, beer section is great, and if you want prepared food, they have great sandwiches.
