My husband and I ate here on Sat, Feb 11, 2011 for lunch. Not desiring a heavy lunch, we ordered the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken. Our waitress, Linda, was very friendly and attentive. The problem we experienced was the chicken was not grilled, it appeared to be baked and was as dry as cardboard and just as flavorful. I was unable to eat more than a few bites and felt it important to mention as we were paying. We didn't mention it to Linda simply because the problem of not making the dish correctly needed to be elevated up. Upon checking out, the cashier was very apologetic and addressed the woman who was either the manager or the owner. She blamed US for the awful food indicating we should have mentioned it to Linda. Agreed, but she never took our concerns about not making the dish correctly seriously and brushed us off. We will return some day if in the area but have learned that in order to bring issues forward we'll do so at the table. Be aware. read more

The new Stagecoach Inn has been totally renovated on the inside. Very nice but no longer has the nostalgia of the past. Food is way overpriced. Small grilled catfish filet is $18. Chicken Fried Steak (size of your palm) was $16. Prime Rib was average size but very delicious going for $32. Strawberry Kiss ($8) was a letdown. Had to use a knife to break the meringue. Staff were very attentive and did a great job. Too pricey for me. Won't be back. read more

My wife and I have been dining at the Stage Coach Inn several times a year for the past twenty seven years. Our latest(and last) visit was Sunday October 22nd. A very disappointing experience. The following observations are given. Very cheap decor. Inadequate number of entrees and vegetable choices. Dessert choices inadequate. We expected an increase in price but double is not acceptable . For years I've heard of the legendary stagecoach inn, but they have been closed for renovations almost as long. Now they are back open, and it seemed like an ideal dinner spot while driving from Austin to Dallas. They have great cocktails and a solid local beer selection. We both had the four-course menu and enjoyed it very much. I had the tomato aspic with a side salad, a well-executed appetizer. The chicken-fried steak entree was Texas traditional, but a little on the dry side, especially since there was not enough gravy on the plate. Went for Mother's Day brunch yesterday morning, and your CHEF should be ashamed of themselves!! The descriptions on the menu was the reason we chose to spend that much money for a buffet! I don't think anything but the fruit salad even closely resembled what it was described to be. All the hot items were COLD, some even inedible. I smiled and told my husband that everything was fine, but he knew it wasn't. Our sever even had an excuse for the obviously burnt cheesecake crust, telling us it was a different kind of dark wheat graham cracker? $120 for two people for powdered eggs and pressed ham? We have paid far more for meals that were well worth it, but we won't be making the choice to spend it at Stagecoach ever again. read more

We spent nearly 30 years coming to the Stagecoach Inn. The only thing that the hotel has going for it is that it's downtown and easy to walk to the shops. The bed was uncomfortable and hard. There was no iron or ironing board available and our bathroom door didn't shut. There was no convenient parking. The front desk said that the owners want to keep it resort style so parking near your room will not happen. Which is annoying so if you forget something you'll have to walk back and it is not well lit if it's night time. All the greenery is a little much and seems very clutter. The grass around the pool was thick and all I can think is of snakes. We went swimming at night and there were no light to light the way and no light at the pool area to even see while sitting around the pool. Now, The Stagecoach restaurants had always been a tradition. I had easily made reservations on my phone. They sat us quickly when we arrived in the bar area. I didn't think to say anything because I mean it's a nicer restaurant and we knew we'd be paying $30 or more for our meal but we should have requested for somewhere else. We were hoping to have a nice family dinner with my 3 year old. As soon as we sat down two girls started facetimeing very loudly. It was irritating with their high pitch laugh but they finally left. We all got the chicken fried steak which looked very large but appearances can be deceiving. First couple of bites were just breading. I finally had to cut the breading away from the side to get to meat which was very tough. Mashed potatoes were good. The entree was not worth the cost. The strawberry Kiss was delicious. The worst experience came when our entrees arrived so did a loud drunk group of men. They loudly talked and laughed. Not kind of atmosphere we were thinking we wanted for our dinner. But it continue to get worse when every other word was an F word. Finally after about 10 minutes of hearing the F word thrown out multiple times I asked the waitress if we could be move. However, she said there was nothing she could do about a loud group of men and we couldn't be moved. Well, I then said if it continues I'll ask them to stop. So because they didn't want to lose money off of those drunk men they decided they'd move us. For a place that advertises a classier and more sophisticated type of restaurant that was not the type of atmosphere I was expecting especially for a meal that was more than $30-40. Apparently that type fowl language is acceptable to them. I've sat in several bars of a lower price point and have never heard people talk so fowl and loudly. I was definitely disappointed in our stay. We love Salado but will not stay or eat at Stagecoach again. read more

My girlfriend and I didn't stay here, but we did dine at the restaurant. Fine dining, this place is not, but it sports some excellent character. Everything looks in the establishment looks unchanged since the place was made over 100 years ago. The whole restaurant is in historic Salado, TX. There was plenty of places to go shop after, or before, your meal. The wait staff are extremely helpful and courteous. Make sure to pay attention to your waiter/waitress because the entire menu is told verbally. The building itself is quite interesting. There is a section in the restaurant that has a tree growing straight though it. The dress is not quite casual, but jeans are not a problem. Unfortunately, the place is quite a bit over priced. I don't want to pay up to and over $20 a meal and have my food come on plastic plates. Also, the entree was quite forgettable. Their hush puppies were quite amazing though. If you're in the area, I at least recommend that you visit the restaurant. Quite a few famous people have stopped through there, and it is someplace every Texas should see at least once. read more

Things have gone downhill here. This has always been a favorite spot for my wife and I when we are near Salado, but tonight may change that. Food - the food was fairly good (for the Stagecoach Inn - it is not a gourmet restaurant). We ate at 8:00 on Valentines Day, which was probably a mistake - menu choices were limited, and reduced as the evening progressed. Service - this has always been a strong point here, but not tonight. Maybe the server was new, but her style was not Stagecoach Inn standard. It took more than 5 minutes to get anything to drink - there was leftover, room temperature water in a pitcher on the table that we finally poured our self. When the waitress finally asked about drinks, having seen a bar there, my wife asked about a Bloody Mary. This seemed to confuse the waitress. After a long discussion with the bartender (which we overheard), she said they only had wine and beer. She left a sheet of paper with the bar menu (her copy), and five minutes later, I ordered a glass of cabernet and an iced tea. My iced tea had no ice in it. We were promised hush puppies for immediate delivery when seated, but... We ordered - the menu seem to be missing things others around us had ordered. (they recite the menu here). We both ordered prime rib, rare. Eventually, room temperature hush puppies arrived with the shrimp cocktail (which was "OK"). We had to wait for a fork to eat since the table was only set with two knives! Salad followed which was, again, "OK". We finally asked for ice in the water pitcher and got some. Good to know they did have ice. By then, the room-tea was gone - had to flag the waitress for a refill which came with ice. She told me if I wanted another lemon, to ask her for one! The prime rib was actually pretty good - and really rare! Needed to ask for butter for the rolls. Finally, she asked if we were ready for dessert (part of the meal) - when we said yes, she departed to see what was left. The list was half of what we had heard others told - since their signature strawberry merengue wad "cracked and turned to dust", my wife passed, I ordered a chocolate pecan pie that was mediocre at best. So service was about 2 stars. The final disappointment was paying the bill. We had to wait almost 5 minutes for a discussion with one of the staff regarding tipouts before we could pay. One lady asked how everything was, commented on my red shirt, and then walked away before I could answer her question. When I was finally waited on to pay, I did answer the question. They offered a 25% discount, which I let them do. We left having enjoyed the time together and the prime rib, but questioning what had happened. We had planned to do Sunday brunch there before we left town, but decided to see what else Salado has to offer. No reason for two disappointments in one trip. read more

The new Stagecoach isn't just reopened, it's upgraded! This is probably the first and only restaurant in Salado that gives its residents an option for a nice dining experience. I don't think the new Stagecoach is trying to be like the old Stagecoach, which is just fine with me! It's like a little piece of Austin was brought over to the small town. The food has been amazing every time I've visited. The cocktails are delicious, every appetizer is a great choice, the entrees are always cleaned off my plate, and OH my god the desserts. If you don't get the chess pie, you're missing out. This place definitely deserves a visit, and I'm very excited to see the hotel when it's completed! read more

First, I question why I am writing this review. Most of the people who go in here probably do not know what Yelp is. Generally has a much older clientele. We had Thanksgiving dinner here, 2012. I will go through the stages of the meal in order. Arrival: It's an old house, historic, and this atmosphere is really what the place is all about. That's about the best thing they have going here - their past. Staff was courteous and relatively professional. Tables were set with water carafes, napkins and silverware set in a bit of a formal manner. However, and this theme permeates everything in the restaurant, a second glance reveals the apathy of the staff and owner. The silverware was that out of a refractory, the dishes were mostly plastic. There were not enough utensils (go Google place settings, owner...) Three options were given for dinner: turkey, ham or "leg of lamb" We ordered one turkey and two lambs. Appetizer: shrimp cocktail or fruit salad. Salad: garden salad or tomato aspic salad. We all ordered the "shrimp cocktail." This arrived as 3 shrimp on top of lettuce on a plate. Yes: three. No, just three - laid flat on the lettuce. Stunning. Has the owner EVER seen a shrimp cocktail??? Ok, so now the salads arrive. Tiny - served on a bread plate. Iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber. Not terrible - just tiny. About what you expect from central texas small town restaurants. The main entrees: Here is why I am writing this review. The "leg of lamb" was served as sliced lamb. I don't think I had ever seen lamb sliced like this - it was sliced like sandwich meat. I'll assume this must have come from their food service distributor like this, because I highly doubt they would have gone to the trouble to slice it so thin. Very dry, and of mixed moisture levels. It must have been heated on a flat grill first. Frankly: Disgusting. Like something out of a high school lunch system. Turkey: It was better, just somewhat dry. I think they cooked their own turkey. Cut in strange sizes however. Just FYI staff: you generally slice turkey, in long slices, in case you have been asleep your entire life. Entrees included some fried apple or banana dumplings, which either came from food service or had been sitting around -long- time. The best thing on the plate were the peas. Then desert: We ordered the strawberry thing (which apparently they are known for) and two chocolate pecan pies. The strawberry ice cream deal is good. The only thing in the entire meal we can say is actually good. The pie arrived at what I would call a "half slice." My fathers was super thin, mine was just odd shaped and not very long. What? Is a three year old cutting pies back there?? Not only that, if you make your pie, then use a LARGE pie pan and make a restaurant grade pie. The pie was made with a small pie pan, and then they were trying to make each pie go as far as possible. Pitiful. For $6 you can do better folks. ---- To the Proprietor: Take some pride in your work. The restaurant is currently a joke. I realize that operating a small restaurant in small town Texas is difficult, and volumes can be low. I also understand that much of your clientele just doesn't know better. However, many people have heard of this restaurant. Imagine what would happen if you were known as not only being 'old' but also 'wonderful' and 'delicious'. Seriously, aspire for greatness - not survival. Go hire just *one* person with some training. Someone from a culinary arts school. Or use the Internet if your too cheap to do that. Learn how to cook a leg of lamb (it's not hard - and it will be cheaper than food service - tip: you leave the lamb on the bone.). Learn how to brine a turkey. Tell your staff to slice and serve meats correctly. Bring in a consultant for a few days. But do SOMETHING right. Here is the sad truth: I think the owner knows exactly how to do things right, and just doesn't care. I believe they will just continue to take money from old folks as long as they can, while putting in as little effort as possible. Seen it happen in a hundred other small town restaurants. I noticed a AAA Diamond / Platinum plaque at the front. No idea how they got this. This meal was ~$22 per entree, plus deserts and coffee. read more

The Tradition is gone (So Sad) After being a regular visitor on Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, and other special occasions, the unbelievable has happened all of the special things that made The Stagecoach Inn Restaurant special are now gone. Half Grilled Pimento Cheese Sandwich is now one of the Main Courses? It is served with Banana Fritters that have no flavor. First time I have ever seen one left on our table. Prepare for smaller portion sizes and higher prices, more like a click establishment you would find in a big city not like a small historical city like Salado. I think the beer and wine is more important than the food. Service we very slow and food was cold. Wish I could say more good things but my on my Strawberry Kiss meringue was so hard I could not eat it. Was worried about breaking a tooth. Maybe you should change your name to more meet the type of establishment you are looking to become and let someone open back up the real The Stagecoach Inn Restaurant. Made our comment to a manager but could tell he didn't give a hoot. I was craving shrimp cocktail, tomato aspic & hush puppies so I headed up to Salado. I have been going there since 1980. Boy was I disappointed. Shrimp cocktail is no longer served. I received two hush puppies which didn't taste like the originals; they were sweet. The tomato aspic was completely different. Then there were only 2 entree selections on the "Traditional menu". If you wanted something different, there was a $13 surcharge. The chicken fried steak had a smokey flavor. But the strawberry kiss was close to the original. Saturday morning at the 11:00 opening was a first opportunity for my wife and I to revisit the reopened Stagecoach inn. We like what they have done to spruce up the interior, but that is where the honeymoon ends. We were expecting to order a full dinner as we had done in the past, but were met with a brunch menu. We had intentionally had a small breakfast so we could enjoy a full meal in Salado. Rather than leaving for another venue, we decided to try the brunch. My wife ordered a simple eggs, bacon, and home-frys and I ordered what I thought was going to be eggs Benedict. I should have taken a closer look as their version of the dish is baked potato, brisket and plain eggs on top. Now is where this restaurant fell completely apart. Being one of maybe two tables seated in the restaurant, It took an exceptionally long time for our order to come to the table. The items on my wife's plate were cold, the plate cold, and the meat served as the bacon did not meet expectations as bacon. My plate cold, the baked potato was hot, but the eggs were not poached. It looked like the kitchen attempted to let the eggs cook on top of the hot potato. They would not pass a health inspection as cooked. Overall, the coffee was great, our waitress was good, and the manager did comp part of the bill. Based on the overall experience, the manager's apology will not prevent the Stagecoach inn from being removed from of our special restaurant list. read more

My family used to come here to these Highland-Scottish type Festivals in the summer. It was great fun to see all the bag-pipers and rock-throwers with their kilts. There was also a stage coach play ground in the back. As a kid I enjoyed that, actually I probably still would lol !The dog races and other festivities were fun too! read more

Went for lunch... wish we got the hush puppies, they looked great, everyone there who seemed local were ordering them. I got the burger with steak fries and my wife got the club sandwich. Everything tasted great and it's a really beautiful place, they must have spent a ton to remodel this old place. I was almost dissuaded if going after seeing some of the reviews on yelp, but glad we went anyway. Would definitely go back! Give it a shot! I was taken by my kids for an overnight stay in Salado at the Stagecoach Inn an shopping. It was a wonderful experience. Of course I loved being with my kids but the staff made it so easy that all I had to do is spend quality time. The rooms we so peaceful and clean. We ate dinner and breakfast at the inn and both were just wonderful. The best part about the stay was the staff. It was the same group who greeted us at dinner and then again at breakfast. What a wonderful place to work and it shows in their friendly attitude. I will most definitely go back to shop and will include another stay at the Stagecoach Inn. Wonderful Experience. read more

A nice change from the grandma look it had before. The food was delicious and I was happy the way they used to recite the menu to you was gone, but the food was pricey. We didn't get the hushpuppies, but did get the strawberry kiss. I was happy they kept some of the nostalgic items on the menu. It has gone to POT! I have been eating here since my parents brought me for special celebrations as a child on our way to Austin. We ate there yesterday and things have changed for the worse!! Now they have printed menu's most things ala carte. That Strawberry Kiss we all loved is now $4.95 unless you orderd one of the 20 to 25 Dollar all inclusive meal like a 6oz chicken breast. Gone: Shrimp Cocktails, Tomato Aspic, TWICE BAKED POTATOES, and the tasty little rolls they used to serve. What the have now: Mexican Food, you can order enchiladas, they also have a lot of complaining customers and yesterday an abundance of flies. They have nothing you cannot get for a lot less money at a Golden Corral. The new menu makes dining here very costly. For those that like things old fashinoned you will love the carpet, and wallpaper both are very old and worn out. The Air conditioning was having issues yesterday. I spoke to a long time employee and she told me the ladies that work there are not making the tips they used to, and the owner does not want to hear any customer comments. Have been coming here sporadically for about 17 years whenever I'm in the area. Service is okay...no gripes, nothing great. Last Saturday was probably my last intentional stop there. The restaurant is poorly managed and a little worn around the edges. Time and lackluster management have taken a toll. Food was about a 3 on a scale of 10. Not worth the $$. Hush puppies were dried out, barely warm...probably left over from day before. Nothing was made from scratch. Dinner rolls were dry, old. Dinner at Stagecoach Inn used to be worth the drive. This place ruined my Mother's Day dinner with my mother and grandmother!!! We arrive at 6:15 for our 6:30 reservation and they were already sold out of prime rib!!! Then after waiting 30 we got drinks. You could not order the famous cornbread sticks unless you were getting the four course meal. Waited an additional hour for salads. Then when we finally started getting food it was ok and sub par. They gave us rib eye for the same price as the prime a $4 discount. Big whoop! My brother ordered his steak med rare and it can out WELL done and his gf ordered a sandwich it came out BLACK. They took both back to then kitchen, and came right back they were out of rib eyes now!! They offered him a " left over fillet from last nights special" after 2-2.5 hours he would of eaten anything at this point! They ran out of the type of beer my brother had also and his second beer had to be different brand. My husband and mother both ordered a burger and it came out with plain white bread because they had run out of Brioche buns and apparently cheese because it was meat and bread. Kids burgers at least had cheese but the burger was way over cooked and tough. Finally we get to dessert the famous Strawberry Kiss it comes out so tiny and with chocolate ice cream because yet again they ran out of something else vanilla ice cream. I really felt bad for our waiter none of this was his fault. He was embarrassed we could all tell. The place was NOT BUSY AT ALL! I can see why! It was comical at best for ruining our special day. The manager came out and did offer a 50% discount on our meal. The manager was also embarrassed he said for their lack of being under prepared for a holiday weekend. But we will never go back. They were more worried about preparing for their Mother's Day brunch on Sunday that they did not give a crap about us on Saturday. read more

The restaurant was awful! First we had to wait well AFTER 11 am when they supposedly open, to be allowed in. They acted like it was busy, making us wait for a table but it was not full at all. We had a party of 11 and they had to put some tables together. Two in our party were sitting between two tables which were of different heights but when we asked for an additional table, the waitress refused saying if they added another table, THEY would not be able to get around. Mind you, the dining area is very large and there were only two other small parties in the room! Then came the horrible chicken broth appetizer. It tasted like hot water that had had an onion boiled in it. Not chicken taste whatsoever! The hush puppies WERE delicious, however. When several in our party wanted lemon for their tea, Cheryl, our waitress told us "no, there's no lemon". Giving her the benefit of the doubt and thinking she was just ignorant, I asked if they had limes, she said they did not. The $16 chicken fried steak was of normal size (not as big and bad as they describe it) and, it as well as the gravy were good. The vegetables, however, were peas and carrots from a can and a boiled potato! The corn muffins were doughy and not flavorful. Also, when a male server brought the tray with our meals on it, he literally dropped it on the side table, like he resented having to carry it over for Cheryl and/or the OTHER, very nice waitress helping Cheryl. I noticed the nice waitress, looked at me and seemed embarrassed for his behavior. Dessert was not impressive and when I asked if I could have my peach cobbler and ice cream with the ice cream on the side, Cheryl said only if they had cups. Mind you, this is a giant restaurant; it was NOT full; and I am sure they have dishes. She brought the ice cream in a plastic cup like you put ketchup in for take out. I did not mind but found it odd that she was so unaccommodating. At the end of the meal, several of us went over to where the Christmas tree was and took our picture together. Then we peeked around the corner and noticed a water and tea serving station with a very large bowl, FULL of lemon slices! I was so incredulous, I had to get the other ladies to come over and look at it! When I told the cashier what a horrible waitress, Cheryl had been, she defended her by saying that she found it very hard to believe! Needless to say, I did NOT leave a tip and noted the service was bad on the ticket. Ed H. is right that the majority of clientele probably do not use Yelp but I just feel better having written this. I will NEVER go back there again. I joked that maybe their best restaurant plaque was really made by one of the neighboring artisans! And, in fact, the staff at one of the stores identified several "good" restaurants for us in that area and did not mention the Stagecoach Inn as being one of them. If you want to stay in a $19.95 per nite motel, this is the place for you, because that is the value you get. And, the restaurant is equally bad. Got to McDonald's and get a good meal.. The restaurant and the motel are living off their legacy. We ate at the restaurant 5-6 years ago and the food and the service was excellent. This time it was a -1 star. The motel - The TV is a 21-27" CRT tube, vintage 1960 (it doesn't work unless you turn on the light switch by the door, then it totally stopped working), the mattresses are horrible (as though they were bot at a bargain store in 1950 (and they are held together with duck tape), the A/C is noisey, the carpet in the room is old, old, old, the wallpaper in the hallways in peeling off the walls, etc. etc. The only time I have had a worse experience in the last 60 years is when I stayed in a motel that didn't have heat when it was 17 degrees. We have been coming here for many years mainly for a special occasion and sadly gave up on it since the menu and service is gone. The quaint atmosphere and verbal menu is no more. The meals are not bad, a little expensive and nicely decorated but we won't be back. read more
