Our first visit, 3 months ago, was a whole lot better than yesterday's visit. We stopped in for lunch I had the grilled catfish with green beans and corn on the COB. My wife had the special, Beef stew with Corn Bread. The catfish was very good and tasty both sides were good. The beef stew left a lot to be desired my wife was looking forward to it. Then she started picking out the meat with all the fat and grizzle on it, which ended up being 85% of all the meat in the bowl. we told the waitress about it and she seemed put off about it. She told the cook and the manager. A little while later she brings a small bowl out with " what she said the cook said had lean meat on it." the first three pieces I took off had more grizzle on it. Sorry not cutting it, the manager never came over to the table to say anything or acknowledge the problem. A little concern would have been nice. went to pay the bill and the girl at the register said she could charge me half price for the food. I guess that is the best they can do, so it would seem all they want is your money and not trying to fix the problem. we will never cross this threshold again wishing you the best in the future. read more

We took 25 people to Oscar Store after a funeral. There was one waitress for us because they were very busy on a Saturday. She provided superb service! First she took the drink orders and turned those in. Then she took the appetizer orders and turned those in. Then she got the meal orders. Everything came out very timely--drinks, appetizers then the meals. Perfect. That's some good restaurant staff teamwork. Every meal was delicious, no one had a complaint. The staff is so friendly and we were seated immediately. Our server took our drink order and appetizer order right away. We started with the Fried Mushrooms and they were really flavorful and served with home made ranch dressing. We also tried the fried Squash which was really good. The Fried Pickles weren't bad just not our favorite. My grilled chicken salad was probably one of the best salads I've had! Portions are large and we left with plenty of leftovers. My daughter had the steak and LOVED IT! This hidden gem is definitely a place we will go to again when we're back in Texas. read more

The food was pretty good. I had the fried catfish, baked potato, and coleslaw. I forgot to take a picture. I've never had coleslaw like theirs, I wouldn't say it was good or bad. I also got coconut cream pie and a pineapple pie to go... I'll do another review of those when I try them. The service was great and the ambiance has a fun family feel. Stopped in for a late lunch, and ordered standard Texas diner chicken fried steak and fried catfish. Entrees came with two sides and choice of gravy. also ordered some fried squash as a starter. Service was fast and friendly, and the meals came out quickly. Everything tasted great, and the portions incl the squash, were very generous. Had to get a couple of doggy bags to take home. All the fried items were very fresh, didn't taste like everything was dumped into the same prep. They also had several dessert options, but will have to leave to next time, we were too full from the meal. Plenty of parking, outside out back is set up for live music, and they have alcohol options if you'd like. Old time paper check to table, pay at the register on the way out. Oscar Store 02-10-25 I have been wanting to try this place out for a couple of months. The timing never worked out or my grandkids didn't want to try anything new. We finally made it! And am I happy we did. The friendly staff sat us as soon as we arrived. They took our drink order and appetizer order right away. Oh My Gosh! Our Appetizers, The Fried Mushrooms were flavorful and served with ranch dressing. The Fried Squash is totally awesome. It also was served with ranch dressing, and my daughter ate them with honey mustard. The Fried Pickles were good but not that exciting. Don't get me wrong. I'm just not a Fried Pickle person. Two of my grandsons really liked them. We ordered for our meals: The Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Home cut Fries, and a roll. The steak was tender and flavorful. That was my dish and I really enjoyed it. The Chicken Tenders, with Gravy, Fried Okra, and Huge Onion Rings which were cooked perfect! Chicken was moist and tender. Good Batter. Locals restaurant place for gathering! Staff was tad overwhelmed as nothing but big groups but with that they were super welcoming and you never felt rushed! Was in the Temple area today on business around lunchtime. I Googled "best restaurants in Temple" and Oscar Store popped up with the reviews stating "best chicken fried steak hands down". Well, that's a mighty bold claim I've heard MANY times before, and I've literally tried them all over Texas. I wanted to check out this mythical place for myself. I got the CFS plate with mashed potatoes and fried okra. Holy Cow!! It didn't disappoint! Chicken Fried Steak Plate 9/10 - the meat was a thicker cut than most. I personally don't like the beat to death, paper thin sliver that's all crust. This my friends was a CFS with substance. The meat was seasoned well. The batter was crispy and well flavored. The gravy was above average and very good. I really enjoyed it! Mashed Potatoes 8/10 - good consistency and texture. The flavor and overall vibe of the potatoes was they were homemade. Gravy was same as CFS. Fried Okra 6/10 - nothing special here. Seemed like run of the mill frozen okra. They were still good though. Roll 9/10 - not sure what kind of roll they put in the plate, but it sure was good. Almost seemed like a honey butter flavored roll? Service 9/10 - everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Can't say enough about the small town hospitality! Thank y'all! Atmosphere 8/10 - old building with rustic charm. I think it was built in 1932 originally. Lots of cool items inside and out. Overall 9/10 - highly recommend you try it out if you're in the area. Heck, we might road trip from NB to try it again! It's worth it!! Great ribeye! The fried jalapeñoes and fried pickles were good also. The wife enjoyed her fish as well. The waitress was young and inexperienced, but made up for it with energy. This iconic place is a throwback to the 1930's and 40's , a cool relaxed atmosphere and great food. I had the chicken fried chicken which was awesome and my husband had chicken fried steak. Both with baked potato (a nice size) and onion rings which were hand-breaded, thick and perfectly deep fried. What a treat! Was too excited to get a picture of my food. My adult son is a big hamburger fan. While he was visiting, I took him to Oscar Store to try their burger. We were both impressed. The hamburgers were large; the toppings were very fresh, and the meat was superb. You can tell the meat is fresh, not frozen, and the patty was thick and juicy. We also had fried pickles which were light and crispy. The staff is friendly and quick, and the atmosphere was laid back and inviting. We will definitely return to try their other menu items, especially the steak. read more

When folks think about Texas this is the place I would think they have on their mind. Very cute rustic exterior with just as rustic interior. Went today for the first time with family. We pulled up and the parking was already full. Which I find to be a good sign. We walked in and the front desk person pointed out a spot and we went to it. The menu is perfect not over crowded with immense options just enough to give you range. Our waitress was very quick for it being so busy. We all had a salad to start and different variations of the chicken fried steak plate. The salad is nothing to write home about. Basic iceberg lettuce with some tomato's (which now that I think about didn't taste grown in dirt, more like the ones from H‑E‑B grown in water) some onion and your choice of dressing. The cool part was when they did bring them out they brought a full bottle of dressing. (I love a dressing) I tried the onion rings / fry's and dinner roll All which were amazing. Definitely homemade. The onion rings had a perfect batter to onion ratio I feel and the fries hot and fresh. The roll WOW It reminded me of family holidays. The chicken fried steak was ok. Definitely fresh made to order the taste was a bit bland but that could just be a me thing so take that how you want. Over all I definitely would suggest hitting up this very Authentic Texas feeling place. read more

Fresh, hand cut, not frozen, barely needed a knife, no residual bits I couldn't chew! Awesome. The patty melt was great too. The onion rings were awesome and had the best "bite through" ever! There are those who say that the politics of this place should cause you not to go (apparently far right). Then there's me, because they have some of the best onion rings I've ever had. Seriously....great food overall. I often stop by on my way home from work to get the chicken fried steak sandwich and onion rings to take home. The meat can't be contained by the bun. It's massive. Breading on the steak and onion rings is perfect. Steak is tender. There's so much that I typically cut it in half and make two meals out of it. If you haven't been, give it a try. Worth a short detour off 53 for a treat. And four stars because occasionally there's such a line at the checkout counter it can take a while to get your take out order. Love the drive out that way , if the solar farms were not on my way it would be so much nicer ! I hate that there on prime farming land !
