Amazing food and service. There's a lot of lemon flavors in the cooking style. But everything is fresh, cooked for a long time to bring tenderness, and all at great prices for the huge quantities. Nice ambience with the beautiful murials on the wall. This place is clean and laid back. Open late and tasting great, this gem of a Greek restaurant is one that goes largely unnoticed as popular joints along Ditmars take most of the business. However, during peak hours this place gets super packed with lines that don't exceed the door (thank goodness). Like Taverna Kyclades, they offer traditional style Greek dishes as well as outdoor seating in the summer time. The service is pretty good, but very rushed during peak dinner hours. Sometimes it might be easier to come after 9PM (they close after midnight after all) and enjoy a medium paced meal. Most of the things they have are premade, which may sound strange but most folks will notice upon entering that the entrance looks almost like a deli, except with a lot of Greek fare. If they are out of a particular item, especially toward the evening, consider it gone for the rest of the day. With that said, everything here that I've tried so far is superb. The spinach pie is not as amazing as Taverna Kyclades, but it receives an A- for quality and flakiness. The saganaki (fried cheese) is great, with just the right amount of crisp with ample amounts of cheese. The pasticcio, mousaka, and stuffed cabbage are all good choices. Like most Greek establishments, the entrees with their sides and with appetizers come out to be a feast. The portions here are awesome and one might want to consider loosening the belt a few notches down after trying one of their meals. Prices are excellent with the amount of food one would receive. Between 4 people - 3 entrees, 4 beers, 3 appetizers, and dessert wound up being $65 plus tip. 3.5* Big, modern Italian feeling Greek restaurant with no lunch special, so pricey for a ladies lunch. Loved that the big Greek waiter placed a dish of cut up lemons on the table-love the lemons. Also,, loved the Greek grilled pita. Ate: Antipasto platter- yes that is what it was called- meze really $10 Saganaki Salmon with lemon potatoes- $18.50 Samos wine $5 The mez was phenomenal with eggplant dip containing bits of feta and all were so fresh and good. Saganaki did not arrive hot, but was mega tasty. The salmon was a tad dry and I prefer my lemon potatoes a tad firmer. Loved the sweet wine. Ate here last week with the family. Sat outside. The staff were amazingly helpful and friendly. A guy who seemed like maybe the manager took a decent amount of time to explain the menu to us, took us inside and showed us a whole bunch of the dishes, helped us to decide what to have. The food was tasty, Greek / Mediterranean comfort food. I had a variation on Mousaka, and others had some lamb, a souvlaki dish and chicken / fish. We shared a couple of apps, the Greek salad was fresh and tasty. Best part of the whole experience was the fact that the manager took such good care of us all and came back to check on us regularly. They also were fairly relaxed and let everyone sit there chatting rather than rush them out.Then when we paid they brought us a free dessert bite covered in honey which was a nice treat at the end. read more

Opa!! Say it. It's a fun word, isn't it? Too bad my Greek doesn't extend much farther but here at Stamatis, that's OK, or "ehn-dahk-see" as the Hellenics say. I always wanted to experience Astoria and with some friends' help - I had a great evening. My Irish half is so dominant - my looks, mannerisms, "hollow leg" - I sometimes forget I'm half Greek. This experience brought with it a rush of memories from my childhood and a smile to my face - the mention of lamb dishes like Stifado, others like Pastichio, Moussaka and, yes, smelling the whiff of Pine-Sol at the Greek market we stopped at beforehand reminded me of Mom's incessant cleaning w/ Pine-Sol, bleach and Windex when I was a child - I'm amazed Dad and I had any lungs left - or that the house didn't blow up! Anyway, Mom's much older these days and doesn't make 1/2 of what she used to cook up so this experience was a nice stroll down memory lane a bit. OK, massive digression - sorry. On to the food. Very good to Excellent! All appetizers were fresh and flavorful - Octopus, Horiatiki salad (cucumber, onion, tomato and feta), the dips, semolina bread - we had a feast before dinner arrived! My lamb chops arrived as I ordered - medium rare. Very good flavor. I could eat a dozen of them but sadly had to settle for four chops. The lemon potato wedges are a required staple. My friend's lamb with leeks was "Wow"! A braised lamb covered in leeks - really delicious and probably the best item I tasted. I was also impressed with another friend's eggplant dish. So completely happy with my first trip to Stamatis with one of my best friends today. She was visiting and we decided to head to her old neighborhood to eat before she went home. We went just before noon which was perfect the place was basically empty. The staff were very attentive and service was great. We ordered the Greek Salad, friend cheese and grilled octopus to start. Fresh delicious heavenly are a few of the words that come to mind. It honestly couldn't be happier! Then we shared the grilled lamb w potatoes. Perhaps the highest compliment I can levy on a restaurant is after a hearty Greek meal it's hard for me to distinguish whether I was dining at Stamatis Restaurant or at my mother's kitchen. When Stamatis is good it's very good. When it isn't very good it's OK. Yet despite the inconsistency you would do yourself a favor visiting this longstanding staple of Astoria's landscape. You can't go wrong by ordering the basics, which is what I did at my last visit just last week. I list my order for your perusal: Green salad (Romaine lettuce, scallions, dill, feta cheese, Kalamata olives and a basic oil and red wine vinegar dressing), scrumptious grilled octopus in oil and red vinegar, lamb fricassee (lamb stewed in greens, and avgolemono (egg & lemon) broth, and two sides of casserole prepared in olive oil and basic tomato sauce okra and string beans. The service was friendly but sporadic. Noise level was excessive but only because my companion decided to sit in the back room alongside a party of frat-boys. If we sat in the main dinning room the noise level would have been acceptable. Typically the fish and chops are fresh and made to order. The menu consists of traditional "Greek" fare that some other nearby highly regarded restaurants don't offer ( the majority of the items I ordered). Stamatis offers moussaka (baked eggplant, potato, spiced ground meat and bescimiel) pasticho (baked large spaghetti, spiced ground meat and bescimiel) and macaronia me kima (Greek spaghetti Bolognese) daily. So do yourself a favor and make sure you visit Stamatis on their "on" days. The trick is of course knowing when those days occur. Rest assured however their "on" days outweigh their "off" days. read more

The only issue was that they didn't have what both myself and my boyfriend ordered (moussaka and papoutsakia) which is what I really went there for but I can't complain after getting a complementary dessert at the end. My favorite Greek restaurant in NY and I've been to them all. Tip the chefs at the front a couple bucks and ask what's great tonight. They'll explain the dishes in front of you while you wait to be seated and they'll take great care of you. Once seated the place is simple, with kitschy decor, but knock-your-socks off fresh Greek cuisine, both land and seafood are top notch. Service is casual, but lightning fast and attentive. With a big service team sharing the load, we never find ourselves waiting for anything. The octopus is fantastic. The moussaka and pastitsio are great. Lamb chops are amazing, and MP fish of the day to share has always been a crowd pleaser without breaking the bank compared to many other places. There's a roasted eggplant in tomato dish who's name I can't recall, but is off-the-charts good, as is the lamb with orzo. Finally, for coffee/dessert, they bring a complimentary galaktoboureko: a wonderful flaky phyllo dough wrapped firm egg custard drizzled in light orange syrup. It's to die for. I call it "galactic booty call" it's so good (and because I can't speak Greek and it's close enough the waiters get it). read more

Stamatis is one of my favourite restaurants in Astoria! Why? It offers a variety of authentic greek dishes (especially moussaka which i love so much) and that greek vibe. The place is huge, they have indoor and outdoor, it fits over hundreds of people. Last night i went with 3 friends and we ordered: Greek salad, zucchini croquettes, dips, branzino, lamb, octupus and everything was on point. The service wasn't as good as usual but no compains! This place is like home. Greek home. The greek salad is not a traditional one(which is without lettuce) but always fresh and flavorful. Dont forget to pour lots of vinegar and some olive oil, then toss for a few minutes. Recommendations: -Grilled octopus is highly recommended. Its like octopus cream. yum -Lamb with orzo. My son and I had lunch here based on the good reviews, and the restaurant did not disappoint. Service was excellent, fresh bread and good quality olive oil for dipping were provided after being seated, and our water glasses were never empty. The Pastitsio I ordered was excellent and the portion was generous. My son ordered the Moussaka and thought it too was excellent. I was full after the main course, but the waiter brought over free dessert, Galaktoboureko, which was extremely good. An excellent all-around dining experience. read more

I've been on a Greek food kick recently and when my friend suggested our dinner date be at Stamatis I was quite eager to come here after seeing all the great reviews. We came Friday night around 7:30pm and the place was filled but we were able to get seated very quickly. I ordered the baked salmon with lemon potatoes and my friend had the pork soulvaki platter. Our dishes were cooked and seasoned well and the portions were generous. We could hardly finished the whole meal before getting our complimentary desserts. These desserts were heavenly. They were these soft cream wrapped with phyllo dough and drizzled with honey? Not exactly sure what it was but it was delicious. The service was great here as well. The food here is great and very on-par with Kyclades but without the hour and a half wait. The fish is all cooked well and the flavors are simple but delicious. We had the stuffed cabbage app which was delicious and the meatballs app which was flavorful but a tad dry. The baby shark is our goto and the scordalia that comes with it is great. The seafood platter was good with a variety of seafood and fish, but at $30 it's a bit much and not a huge portion. The place is pretty large and can accommodate large parties. There is a little backyard section that can be fully covered by a retractable awning. Why it didn't get 5-stars: 1. Cleanliness is very important to me, but I can be forgiving at times depending on the situation. What I can't forgive is the blatant laziness of not cleaning areas around the table. I don't want to look at the caked on gross food that has splattered on the wall over the years right next to me. 2. My friends kebabs came out the same time as our seafood dishes, but were obviously cooked first and therefore cold when they got to us. Cold souvlaki is unacceptable. 3. The way they set up the tables around us, created a tight space and the dirty dish cart that kept coming through the restaurant didn't fit and we kept having to move our chairs to make it fit. They need to be more considerate and have a better system when it's packed. read more

The food here is amazing and authentic but what sets this spot apart is the best servers. There really is a homey vibe about this place and the service is amazing. The menu is pretty extensive but everything we got from the vegetable platter to the pork souvlaki and pastistio were incredibly flavorful and the prices are very reasonable. Wow, what a feast!!! While visiting the area on vacation, our family had one the greatest meals we've had in a long time at Stamatis Restaurant. It was like stepping off the streets of Astoria and stepping into a local restaurant in Greece! We tried a little bit of everything as a friend ours ordered a sampling of some of her favorites on the menu! There wasn't anything that we didn't like. I have been going to Stamatis for many years. The service is always impeccable and the food excellent. They really go out of their way to make sure each customer has a good time. We went today with our 4 month old baby and they made sure they accommodated our rather large stroller and even offered to lower the air conditioning if it was too cold for the baby. All the fish was fresh, moist and tasty, we got here at a decent time (7:30pm) on a Saturday night without reservations and we were immediately seated. Saturday night over the Labor Day Weekend we took a shot and drove to Astoria despite the fear of traffic on the way. We got street parking a block away and casually strolled up 23rd Avenue passing Telly's Taverna and finally arriving at Stamatis. Upon entering we immediately notice the major makeover of the restaurant interior. Used to be bright lights and white walls and now it was subdued lighting with freshly painted murals on the walls which we found out were hand painted from photos the owner took in Greece. A beautiful job and a more comfortable karma eminated from the space. We were immediately seated and our waiter was right there asking for drink orders. We got a bottle of Greek Retsina, our favorite standby for Greek Food. On the table was a fresh basket of crispy bread and Greek EVOO for dipping! For Appys we ordered: *Tiramusalata- Creamy and delicious ! *Spinach Pie - The best! the warm flaky phyllo was filled with creamy spinach and was outstanding. They dont serve pita so the bread went well with the Tira dip and salad.. Then we had the Cucumber and ripe Tomato Salad with Feta - Another outstanding rendition far better than others we have had. For mains we decided on Fish: Bonnie G., had a huge Grilled Swordfish Steak with a side of Giant Lima Beans...Fish was perfectly cooked and juicy! she requested a side of freshly diced garlic clove and we used it with the fish for an extra kick. I had Grilled Whiting with a side of Okra....An excellent choice for a modest $13. You remove the only bone and its pure white fish heaven!
