This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. Wide range of food options and service is quick. Very casual eating environment and friendly staff. Portions are rather large and good for sharing. The octopus, grilled calamari, branzino, and imam were all fan favorites. I recommend calling in the imam before you get there because they run out fast. Great customer service! My family and I were surprised by the complimentary dessert (fried custard with powdered cinnamon). After expressing our excitement in getting the dessert we did not expect, they packed us 4 more slices to go on the house! This restaurant has nice ambiance and the staff was helpful & nice. The grilled octopus was a little bit pricey & a bit more charred than my liking but who can go wrong with Mediterranean grilled octopus!! The flavor was there and the meat was delicious and tender. Even the carrot paired with this dish was memorable. The lemon potatoes are a must get! For the entree- I've never been a big fan of mussels but I couldn't help myself from eating one after the other. They give you a whole big bowl of mussels so definitely worth your money. Mmm, Stamatis. Their grilled octopus is the best - thrown fresh on a hot grill and charred up, delicious. I like the yemista (sp?) - peppers stuffed with rice, the whole grilled fish, and the little fried fish. Also, their Greek salad is excellent. It was fine. There were 5 of us on a Saturday eve. We were seated around 6:30 and the place was less than half full. We were served our meals at about 7:45 - by that time the place was packed. It's loud. It's busy. It's full of families and big groups. The food is fine. The service was lacking. It's a classic Greek place - if you're interested in experiencing that OR if your family has been going for 30 years, have a great time. This is The ABSOLUTE BEST octopus I ever had... without discussion!!! I don't want to sound too excited but here I also had the best grilled Branzino. We had two carafes of Greek house wine, something between a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon blanc. At the end we had the free dessert with a Greek coffee and I could barely walk. Came here for lunch today with my husband. We had the antipasto platter, which we both loved. There was so much food we couldn't finish it. My husband had the Lamb Fricase which he enjoyed every bite of. Kept saying how tender the lamb was and that it was delicious. I had the Moussaka which was amazing. They also gave us free dessert (custard pie) which was a nice surprise. Our waitress was also really good and friendly. Highly recommended, we'll definitely return here. read more

Seriously, as a Greek / Canadian, this is as close as I can get to the Motherland. Loud, boisterous, amazing food, decent non-chalant service and the owner openly smoking at ''her'' table. Fantastic, authentic eats and quite resonable prices. If there's a complaint to be found, i haven't fount it yet in the over 20 times I've eaten there in the last 2 years since they moved across the street. I came here on the recommendation of an old Greek man I met on the plane over from London. He lives in Bay Ridge but comes to Astoria every weekend to eat. The fish were not quite as delicious as Kyclades but the lamb chops in avgolemono were uhhhh-mazing. Also great saganaki. Service was very accommodating of a large group, and as quick as can be expected with so many people to serve. I'd go back more often but it's a bit out of my price range unless family is visiting. read more

Food was decent but I have had much better greek food (avli, greek islands, kyclades). I was really turned off by the crumbled feta and refridgerated tomatoes. Skip the greek salad. The shrimp saganaki was delicious and the grilled squid appetizer was cooked perfectly. Too bad they forgot to serve it to me with the rest of my party's meals. By the time my food came out everyone else was almost done. Then they gave us a hard time using an Amex gift card. They gave some lame excuse. Give me a break. I have worked in the restaurant world before and took those cards all the time. The meal was over $100 and we came specifically to use the card. We urged them to swipe it and of course it went through. This is the second time I had a bad experience here but we were able to make a reservation and they were accomodating and understanding about my noisy 2.5 yr old niece. 3 stars read more

What a wonderful place to experience authentic Greek cuisine! After hearing multiple raving reviews, my friends and I came here last night for a birthday. For appetizers, we had the eggplant with a delicious garlic spread, muscles (that were probably the biggest muscles we had ever experienced), and octopus. For dinner, we had lamb, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. The portion sizes were quite large and everything was mouthwatering. On the side we had perfectly cooked dandelions and lemon potatoes. My favorite part however, was the complimentary dessert after food(I have a major sweet tooth)! Besides the tasty food, we were also very impressed with the service. The place was pretty packed for a Tuesday night, and we never felt rushed out. The waiter was very attentive and polite. Would never eat here again. I should have known from the upkeep of the bathroom. When I mentioned it to staff member they replied "that's not my job". Umm ok. Called on multiple people to be waited on. Lamb chops had to be sent back because they were practically raw. Their complimentary dessert was heated up so much that it was basically sauce. Our waiter George was the best...he took excellent care of our table and was always there to answer questions and make excellent menu suggestions. This is a first class place. The food is very fresh, the service is point on. It is Greek with amazing Greek specialties. I really love the food here and the owner is an absolute doll. I do however have a few minor suggestions which I feel would improve the overall patron experience at this fantastic Greek restaurant but before I get into that let me tell you some of my personal recommendations for menu items. The absolute best thing I tasted here was the grilled octopus. Order it! You will thank me later. It was tender yet nicely charred and you can tell the timing on the cooking was so precise. No rubberiness or unwanted textures, great flavor. I love it so much I'd order two of these and just make it an entree. The seafood combo was pretty good two and is a close second but I wish they would have provided a utensil for removing the meat from the king crab. That was rather messy because I ended up using one of the kebab skewers from my chicken souvlaki to do so. The flavors overall were mild and it arrived piping hot. I recommend giving it a few minutes before digging in. The scallops could have used slightly more sear but other than that it was stellar. The chicken souvlaki was also fantastic. I asked for it well done because I love that char flavor but they served it just right but I was fine with it because the chicken was incredibly juicy. They generously provide three skewers of chicken. They add peppers and onions which adds a bit of flavor and they don't overdo it on the oregano which is another plus for me. It comes with a mini salad. I asked for feta on top as well but they didn't bring it. When I asked the waiter he said feta was extra and I guess he didn't hear me when I asked the first time. I would have told him it was okay. The meal comes with potatoes, rice or salad. I asked if I could have fries and he said it would be fine but the fries actually came out much later than the meal and they weren't the homemade Greek style fries that I am used to. They were just standard. I probably should have went for the potatoes or rice but now I know for next time. They also did not provide any ketchup or anything else for the fries and by the time the server came back around I'd eaten most of them without it. I didn't want to let them get cold while waiting. The tzatziki dip was the bomb but normally when serving a "dip" you also provide something to actually "dip" into it no? At most greek spots they provide toasted cut up pita so I was confused when nothing came out with out. We just ended up using the toasted table bread that was served at the beginning of our meal. The bread was fresh and toasty with a dash of ambrosia olive oil and herbs. The dolmades were great. My friend said she enjoyed her baked clams. Clams aren't my thing so I didn't try them. I'd never had greek wine before and the taste was a little unusual. Not in a bad way but it was sweet and tart at the same time and it was almost like the flavors were competing with one another rather than complimenting each other. My friend requested swordfish but they said they were out and recommended the filet of sole instead. The sole was great. It had a slight crunch of the outside and tender meat inside. She also requested potatoes but they never came. I think part of the problem was our server lacked attentiveness. Before we could finish our sentences he was already walking away. It was like he had selective hearing. I asked for water refills three times. We eventually had to flag down another waitress for our water. I mentioned I'd been waiting for the water for a while and she apologized. The same server also asked if I was done with my plate and I said I wasn't but he took my plate anyway. Me and my friend just gave each other a confused stare. He also told us that we had to order our appetizers and food at the same time and couldn't just order the apps and wait to decide on the dinner so we ended up with way more food than we could eat. As it was our first time dining here, we were unsure of the portion sizes. Overall the portions are generous but the pricing reflects that appropriately. It was my friends birthday so they sent over a free carafe of white wine and some dessert and came over with a lit candle and sang happy birthday. That was very sweet of them and my friend was thoroughly surprised. We were not asked if we wanted to order desert because they had already overheard about the birthday and wanted to help us celebrate. I was already quite full so I saved my dessert for later. We asked for to go containers for our food and they were packed together even though we had requested them separately. The container came smashed up like someone placed something heavy on top it so the plastic lid was not sealed tight on the aluminum pan. Fortunately there wasn't anything saucy inside to leak out. I will return for the food but I would urge them to tell their servers to be patient when taking orders and pay attention and care to the small details to make the customer feel well taken care of as this had potential to be a 5 star experience. read more

Hurts me to write this. As you can see from previous reviews, I am a big big fan! Unfortunately my last visit was less than stellar. For starters no one ever filled our water even though we asked multiple times. We were drinking beers, so it not like we were being cheap! We ordered a bunch of apps and some items came out super quick, like shockingly quick. That was nice, unfortunately the other items took 40 minutes, specifically the grilled seafood. It was awkward at the table as no one was able to eat at the same time. By the time the rest of the food came, the poor bus boy had already tried to box up our food 4 times. The server could have cared less, never apologizing. The seafood, octopus, the $23 octopus was dry and over cooked. We had to ask for our check multiple times, it just wasn't our night there. There wasn't anyone of authority to tell, even though there was an abundance of servers. There is usually a manager on duty that runs the floor, didn't seem like that was happening. My friend and I were craving Greek food and we happened to be in Astoria. Stamatis had good ratings, so we decided to go. Although we felt awkward because we were probably the only two Asians in the restaurant, we also felt very much welcome! The waiters accommodated us when we asked for outside seating-- the back wasn't exactly outside outside, it's more of an open area with an open sky. Nevertheless a cute classy atmosphere and the food was amazing! I loved the texture of their tzatziki sauce, and enjoyed my pork souvlaki platter. Everything was seasoned perfectly-- loved how the food was not salty as restaurant food often is. We ended our meal with a complimentary dessert: galaktoboureko. My boyfirend and I decided we would go to every greek restaurant we could find, so about a week ago we went to stamatis on broadway. We were seated in the first room, i think theres a second one also which looked a little more traditional. My boyfiend said that he felt like he was in a diner because of the purple or green light ?? above our heads. We started out with a green salad, the fetta didnt really taste like other fetta i have eatenit was weird but overall the salad was decent. The kalamari was really tasty, but the tzantziki was definitly not my favorite. We also ordered a seabass which was yummy with lemon potatoes which were ok. Great food. My first time having Greek food. The Greek Salad was awesome and the bread was good. I liked the cheap white wine they had, tasty, especially with the meal being served. I probably could have drank a gallon of the stuff. I wish i had wrote down the name of the dish i had. But it was stuffed eggplant with meat sauce, i know that.
