The food at Stamatis is amazing!!! I would prefer to hit Stamatis over some of the seemingly more popular places in the neighborhood. They are consistent, the wait staff is great and to the point and the food is great. If one were to ask what is good there, I'd probably reply with: "the Greek food..." The Chicken Souvlaki platter is good and a classic. The Spaghetti sauteed vegetarian is also very good. I have eaten both the next day as leftovers after not eating all my food and been very pleased. There is a great selection of seafood. I have had a mixed vegetable dish that was a little more hearty than the one that appears on the menu and it was wonderful. I came here with my wife and kid for the first time and they made me feel like I was a regular. Excellent service, and extremely nice. Felt like an actual original NYC restaurant. They make you feel like you're family. We were seated right away without reservations. The place looks small from the outside but it's huge inside. The food was excellent. Everything tasted fresh. Be prepared the portions are huge. Come hungry. Chicken and pork slauvaki was juicy and tzatziki sauce was to die for. Spinach pie had a perfect balance of feta and spinach. The pastitsio had delicious bechamel sauce, a hint of nutmeg, excellent. Rice was also good. Probably my favorite Greek place in NY, also may have gotten my 1 year old into Greek food as well. Very European feel, nothing is rushed, the bill came because we asked for it. Normally when something is free it's mediocre but their dessert that they surprise you with teleports you to your favorite childhood memory. Not even kidding. Highly recommend. AMAZING Greek food! Stamatis felt super authentic and everything on the menu looked amazing. Our group of 4 was able to walk in on a Friday night with no problems. We ordered the beets, fresh sole, fried feta, lemony potatoes, papoutaskia (stuffed eggplants), and grilled octopus. One of my top 5 places. This places really makes you feel like home surrounded by family and friends. The food portions are huge and I always have leftovers to take without breaking the bank. Great meal here! We sat outside and had just a lovely afternoon! We got the medium Greek salad and it was plenty of food for two people, was really fresh and delicious. We also got the shrimp in red sauce with feta dish (I can't remember what it's called) and that was excellent! It took a bit to come but came out super hot and delicious. We also got a free side of bread that had lots of olive oil and herbs which was also great. The carafe of wine seemed like a good deal to us so we did that too. I truly do not understand what people see in this place. I grew up in Astoria and am no stranger to Greek restaurants in the neighborhood. I had actually never been here. When I was invited to a last-minute dinner gathering here one evening, I was hesitant at first but I figured the old-school charm would win me over -- and who doesn't love good souvlaki? I was wrong. The restaurant itself is incredibly outdated. If you like sitting next to windows caked with dust, highly flammable curtains, and a steady draft in the winter, then this place is for you. But hey, I've eaten in plenty of dives, and some of them had amazing food. So, maybe I shouldn't judge a restaurant by its curtains? Wrong again. Without going into a novel's worth of details, the service was turtle-speed slow, the food was subpar, and the prices were astronomical. Worst things of the night: Someone at the table ordered a fish dish and they neglected to inform him of the fact that they were out of that fish. When he sat there as the only one missing a dinner plate, it was only then that they realized they should have told him. Whoops. He ended up having to pick food off other people's plates. But that wasn't all! We had an extra guest at our table -- a dead bug. Yes, you heard me correctly. Imagine how queasy we all felt after that plate got passed around the table (we were there for so long waiting for things that we needed a little entertainment.) Dont understand why they have such a crowd of people. I guess some people just like bland greek food. The servers are so serious except one gentleman. The lemon potatoes were good, the dries sword fish threw me off because it was flavorless and i was yold it would have more flavor than broiled. The greek salad was notmal. The lentil soup was good. Our waiter really cared about my infant and catered to him but the restaurant had no changing table. Very disappointed being that im a mother that takes her child out to every dinner. We usually go to Astoria Seafood for Greek seafood or Abuqir for Egyptian seafood, but Stamatis was a nice refreshment and new restaurant! The service was great and the food was really tasty. We were a group of 5 so we ordered a bunch of different appetizers including spinach pie, fried smelts, grilled calamari, and Greek salad. The fan favorites were definitely the grilled calamari (amazing!! Except it came with the bone inside the calamari) and the Greek salad you put the olive oil / red wine vinegar yourself. The bread that came with the appetizers was amazing olive oil bread!! For my entree, i had the grilled salmon with fries. The salmon was cooked well and not overcooked. I come here a lot because my Greek parents live nearby. Expect big portions of classic Greek food at reasonable prices. Remember that you can check out the food under glass as you enter. I often get the moussaka (and take home the leftovers). I usually substitute a veggie for the lemon potatoes (to avoid carbs). But the potatoes are really good. The chicken or pork souvlaki is good too, with an ample serving of tzatziki sauce and pita. The Moussaka and the Pasticcio are very dependable. As is the roast chicken. Also the lamb avgolemono (in lemon sauce) is a standby. One of the few disappointments I've had there was beef with orzo--it was overcooked and bland. I would definitely take a hard look at the fish before you order. My friend had dry sardines once. They have decent house wine which goes down easy the more you drink. And every meal ends with a complimentary freshly-cooked Greek custard pastry sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The atmosphere is fun. On weekends you'll find the tables full of extended Greek families and Astoria hipsters. read more

We sat outside and ordered an array of dips to start with fried zucchini -everything was delicious - though my two favorites were the tzatziki and an eggplant dip. All came with pita (though the pita was slow to appear) and we ordered a delicious large greek salad. For the main course, we ordered a red snapper(we actually ordered two, but they only had one large one - perfect), stuffed cabbage as well as lemon potatoes and greens. My friend raved about the place and having experienced this place for myself I can certainly understand why! I came here with a group of 4 for a late lunch and we were seated immediately in the center of the airy, spacious dining area. The interior was lovely, fillled with gorgeous paintings of Greece, dolphins and more. Though it was a little on the loud side, we were still able to hear one another without having to raise our voices. The ambiance was cheerful with a feeling of calm, due to the blue lighting and the white / blue color scheme. We were served complimentary garlic bread which was thick and warm, however a bit tough. My friends ordered a side of beets and Greek salad, along with their meal. I tried a bit of both and they were tasty and fresh. The beets were soft with nice herb seasoning. The Greek salad consisted of crunchy lettuce, red onion, tomatoes, olives and plenty of crumbled feta cheese. There was olive oil, vinegar and pepper for the dressing - Simple, yet delightful. For my main course, I decided to go with the grilled salmon with lemon potatoes, which was absolutely delicious - Perfectly cooked, made with olive oil and seasoned with oregano. The ingredients were not complicated but everything mingled together so well. The salmon was wonderfully tender, slightly crispy, very juicy, and mouthwateringly flaky. It was a generous size and the price of $23 was reasonable. The lemon potatoes were served on a separate plate and pretty enjoyable. It had a distinct lemon and peppery flavor and was smooth. We were given free dessert of galaktoboureko, a traditional Greek dessert of semolina custard in phyllo dough. This was incredibly delectable! It was flavored with a hint of orange and tasted of custard, thin phyllo and very sweet syrup. It was divine! Our waiter was great - Friendly and knew the menu well. One thing to keep in mind is that the food takes awhile to prepare, probably because they cook everything fresh so I didn't mind too much. However, it is best to come when you have plenty of time to fully enjoy the feast you order. I would definitely return, as there are so many yummy sounding offerings on the menu. read more
