What a (hidden) gem! This spot is spectacular. We were so glad it was a beautiful sunny day so we could sit on the patio, take in the view and enjoy the sunshine. The patio has a row of tables along the railing and not all can view the St John's bridge so we were excited to grab the corner spot with a view. There are covered tables which is great for when we return with Daisy, and if the weather isn't ideal. The food is plentiful and delicious; with the perfect beer selection to accompany. It's order at bar and your food will be delivered set up. The staff is friendly, kind and ready to assist. So glad we found this spot. read more

Nice quaint tucked away German restaurant and bar. Go up the stairs and find outdoor seating before entering a solid wood door into the bar restaurant. Order at the counter and they give you a number, staff was friendly. Bus your own dishes and glasses and serve yourself some water between your large beers. Plus the beer selection is available in up to 2.0 Liter mugs! The place is kinda small. With only a couple of tables that sit 6-or more. We arrived in Portland after a very long day of travel and were in desperate need of a good meal! We got there right when they opened, walked in and ordered. I was struggling a bit with what to order and the person that was taking our order was more than happy to help. Make suggestions. I ended up ordering Spatzle with a Bavarian Wurst, it was delicious! Now I have eaten a lot of Spatzle in my life (I consider myself a connoisseur) and this one was good but not my favorite. The Spatzle was just a bit cold and slightly dry but again it was good I'm just being picky. The Wurst was delicious and I highly recommend! I was looking for a German restaurant to take my brother in law to for their birthday. I reached out weeks in advance because it says to do so with parties of 8. I got a quick response from David who was very accommodating. It was slightly disheartening when we arrived at our reserved time they didn't have a table for us specifically. They said "sit anywhere" as they weren't busy but pretty much all of the tables (inside & out) were taken. We made it work for our party by moving tables around to accommodate. You place your order at the bar. We did a "family" style in which we ordered a number of options off the menu and enjoyed it together. Their fondue special was a good deal and we took plenty home in leftovers. The German potato salad was very mustardy (and I love mustard) but a little over the top. Not normally one to order Jägerschnitzel but it was very good (pork). The pretzel was slightly over done but tasty nonetheless. It was packed so service was as best as it could be. There were a couple of issues but they did their best. Overall this place is the "gem" I have seen in these reviews and with giving it a shot. We will be back with our doggies as it is dog friendly! Arrived in Portland and found this beautiful area just outside of downtown. Dog parks, bridges, brewery's, and lucky for us Urban German Wursthaus. We came in right around opening and of course started with some German beers. We ordered at the bar and I went with my favorite German class the Jaegerschnitzel which Crispy Breaded Pork or Chicken Cutlet (I did Pork of course) topped with a rich Mushroom Gravy, served over tender Spatzle Egg Noodles. We of course had to get an appetizer too and for that we went with the special they had that day which was Crispy Mozzarella Sticks with a Curry Tomato sauce. Just sounded too interesting to pass up. The Mozzarella Sticks came out pretty quickly. They had a nice beer batter, good cheese pull, and that curry tomato sauce was very good. Was a little nervous if it would work but for sure did. Wasn't overly strong but had that bit of curry bite that we enjoyed. Within 8 minutes my Jaegerschnitzel came out and it looked great and was huge. the Mushroom Gravy was nice and thick with a lot of mushrooms. I will say the Schnitzel was a little dry but having that gravy saved it. The Spatzle Egg Noodles were more Egg Noodles then Spatzle. Just didn't have the doughy chew I was expecting but still worked with that dish. The Urban German Wursthaus is for sure a place to come into for authentic German food and beer. If I live in Portland I would be here often because their was so much more for me to try. read more

This is the perfect spot to grab a drink while in St. John's! It is decorated with lots of cute German signs and pictures and has an excellent view of the St. John's bridge. They have a great selection of German beer and authentic German food. The bratwurst was really flavorful and served with tasty mustard and sauerkraut. There are a few German "inspired" places throughout Portland. Unfortunately as a born and raised German I would not recommend them. But that is to find in their reviews. This is about a little hidden gem. Hidden since you need to know and make a plan to go there, it's nothing you wander through the neighborhood and think "oh I'll stop there" Which is a pity, cause you should then I can absolutely recommend this. We had the Berliner Currywurst a truly original German street food and snack. Damn they are as close to the original as you can be. It's something for the curry (spice mix) fan! Very good. Their fries come with mayo another original thing in Germany. You can then also choose between a curry ketchup and a regular. I also had the schnitzel witch in the chicken version. All was good but it wasn't the best schnitzel I had - next time I'll have to try the pork version. My hubby enjoyed the very original potato pancake - they are smaller than we know them but the dough was just perfect taste wise. This was my first stop coming into Portland I heard this area was cool to check out. I forgot I had been here before for Accidental Brewing. It's right next to the water and the bridge north to another area I hear good things about. Wursthaus is tucked away in a warehouse district near the waterfront up a flight of stairs. They have a lovely outdoor beergarden patio area as well as a very traditional beerhall inside with classic imported german beers, some locals, and all the german hits. I got a triple sausage platter and a pretzel. The sausages were great (a bratwurst + currywurst) though the pretzel was just OK. A bit of tough exterior and not soft enough inside, could use a bit more flavor. But the spot is really cool and the sausages are definitely worth stopping in for. read more

This place is close by St. John bridge so you will be able to see the bridge from the dining area. We got our lunch order inside and grab water with number to find a seat for us to use. They bring the food to us when the food is ready. The sauce for dipping fries is surprising because it's mixed curry and ketchup. It's a great place for a meal. read more

What's not to love about Urban German. The atmosphere is very German pub. it's fun to sit drinking a Rothaus Pils and look at all the pictures and advertisements the owner has brought from Germany. We bring my mother in law for lunch on the regular because she is full German and says Urban German is the only authentic German restaurant left in PDX area ...beside Edelweiss Sausage & Delicatessen which, is more of a deli. My mother in law is actually Heidi whose mustard is sold at Edelweiss. When at Urban German we ordered a JAGERSCHNITZEL and a Schnitzel sandwich. Heidi loves it and says it's authentic just like she would make it. The mushroom gravy is delicious and the spatzle is cooked perfectly. We also love that the chef makes his own sausage. We were craving German food on a date night and decided to check this place out. It was amazing! The inside is very charming with lots of German/Bavarian decor. Our waitress was awesome and went out of her way to make our evening special (she brought us a romantic candle when we told her it was date night and then she stuck candles in our dessert when she found out it was our anniversary). The food was so good! We started with the Poutine, for dinner I had Chicken Jaegerschnitzel, and my husband got the Duo Wurstplate (German Bratwurst and Bavarian Bierwurst) with pommes frites, then ended with the Applestrudel. If the Jagerschnitzel in Germany is a 10, at Stammtisch in SE Portland a 9 and at Gustav's a 6, then the version here is a 7. Breading and portion were very good, but the sauce was just missing a bit of "pop." The spaetzle had a different shape. Overall, I'd order it again. The wheat beer poured in the appropriate shaped glass more than satisfied. Thank goodness there were no boring McMenamin's pint glasses to be found. Service was friendly. Really awesome spot to find, right across the street from Cathedral Park in St. John's! Attached to Occidental brewing in a really nondescript building. Up the stairs you will find the biergarten. Really awesome German bar and incredibly delicious German food. I ordered the vegan wurst which came with sauerkraut and mustard and the chicken Jägerschnitzel. The mushrooms and sauce on the schnitzel was so good, the schnitzel itself was perfectly cooked. The vegan wurst was surprisingly delicious. I don't eat beef so I was trying the other options and was happy with the flavor of the vegan wurst and was pleasantly surprised with the menu having vegan options in the first place. Great beer menu and a liquor selection that's great as well. Can't wait to come back in the warmer months and enjoy the deck in the sunshine. What a hidden gem! This place sits deep in the cut but it is such a sleeper. We went here after brunch. Just happened to be walking in the park and ran into this place. We had our dog with us but the place is DOG friendly. You can sit outside on the deck or inside, the deck is awesome. We didn't try the food even though I love a good Brat. The food looked looked so I will definitely go back and try it. We had a couple of drinks that were really good and my wife had some beers that were priced really well. Was a test if I remembered any of my German from ten years ago. Came in on a Saturday afternoon looking to enjoy a beer on what is considered a pretty hot day in Portland. Walked right up to the counter where you can order beer and food. Paulaner is one of my favorite German beers and they just so happened to have a wide selection for their Oktoberfest special. Didn't try the food but they have all your hearty , traditional German meals on the menu. I saw an assortment of Späetzle, Wurst, Schnitzel etc. the food looked quite good and came in a healthy portion. The frites were beer battered and perhaps some of the best french fries any of us have ever enjoyed anywhere!!!! After moving cities I was really missing my favorite German Bar so I was glad a friend recommended Occidental where we came here for some brews. Really like the vibe of the place with plenty of outdoor tables to enjoy the view of the St. Johns Bridge. If you're feeling cold they have some covered but the indoor space is also open. Would recommend the outdoor tables near the edge for the best view if you're up for it! As for how it works, you come up the stairs and order inside for both food and drinks. Once you order you get a number for them to bring it out but you clean up after and place in the bins they have outside. Get a nice flight for $15 to get a mix of what they have on tap. I enjoyed the kolsh, an ale, and some of the lighter beers they had on tap (can't quite remember the exact names ): The menu is pretty extensive as well with your classics of brats, pretzels, but also great to see that they had SPÄTZLE!!! Not super common so you know I had to get it with the fried onions. I also got the GERMAN "CLASSIC" BRATWURST which paired nicely with each other. Would highly recommend the SPÄTZLE again since the noodles were cooked well and held the gruyere sauce. The only thing is that I wish the portions were larger for $17 haha. Can't go wrong with a brat as well and they have a nice crunch. Might opt to get the SPÄTZLE with a side of another brat next time. The pretzels and schnitzels also caught my eye but didn't get them this time around so you know what I'll be ordering at my next visit. Throughout the hour we were there on a weekend most of the tables got packed. Dog friendly as well at the outdoor patio so you can enjoy seeing a few pups. read more

The large sample plate had succulent roast pork and a traditional schnitzel that we all agreed was really good. My husband has been to Germany twice. We've been to many German restaurants and have truly liked only a few. This was the first place he said the food tasted like he was back in Germany. I think that's the best compliment one can give. His favorite meal is döner, but I can never find that. From my perspective, no complaints. I love beer, especially German beer, and they have it. They have food, and I love food. And I didn't want to leave. We don't make it to Portland ever, but if we come back again, we will be back.
