Spending the night in this beautiful little community and walked across the street for dinner with the recommendation of the lady at our front desk. She was spot on. The food was really good. I had the broccoli cheddar soup and house salad. My husband had the Stampmill burger special with blue cheese and really liked it and my mother-in-law had the grilled shrimp and potatoes. Have been here twice, it is consistent. The food is O.K., but nothing really special. I have a co-worker that is a regular, but he does not cook. The waitstaff was friendly enough, but the food is just alright. I had the beef tips on a skewer both times, and they were seasoned with a Worcestershire sauce, which was O.K., but lacked any creativity or originality. This building is absolutely beautiful and full of character and history. Beautifully maintained and really nice. Unfortunately, that's where the good ends. I ate here this summer on a date and it was arguably the worst meal I've had in 10 years. We actually watched the 'chef' pull the frozen burger patties out of a sysco box. The buns are wal mart grade, the bacon like burnt cardboard, our food was absolute garbage. We had an appetizer, 2 'burgers', I had 2 beers, my date a glass of wine, and our bill was $52!!!! Are you kidding me???? I always try to support small business but this was just too gross and over priced. I may go back for drinks but I wouldn't give my dog their food. read more

Have been to the Stampmill many times (including once staying in the suites above - see my review on TA), for both dining and just hanging out at the bar. I highly recommend it (especially over most of the indistinguishable places in nearby Deadwood). The staff (servers Kim and Courtney, and cook Dusty) were always on the top of their game, apparently happy to see me and not visibly annoyed by my constant BS. Kim is big into rocks and makes some kick-a jewelry from it - if you want to score some points with her and learn about South Dakota geology at the same time ask her about her latest finds/creations (which will often be in one of her pockets). Dusty and Kim are also into panning for gold, convenient for their present location, and have some interesting stories about their adventures in both the area and their earlier life in California. Oh yeah, and they consider themselves pirates and have and will again live in an RV roaming the country... Owners Amy and Kevin were usually around (Kevin is the chef and Amy fills in in the front where needed), and always make a successful effort to make their guests feel welcome. Dozens of times Amy listened to me tell her how to improve the business (usually by opening the doors at 6AM so I had a place to eat breakfast), and that to the end she was able to decline my advice graciously is a testament to her host-worthiness. They also have some interesting stories to tell - ask Amy about the van and car that parked outside her house at the end of a Cloquet, Minnesota cul-de-sac... And the bar customers are often an enjoyable mix of interesting locals, all with their interesting life experiences, ex-locals and/or part-time residents, and vacationers and people just passing through. Oh yeah, the food and drink. I ate here often and was usually very happy and certainly was never disappointed. Kevin has a daily special and daily home-made soup which were always spot-on, and from the menu I really enjoyed the blue cheese burger (an import from Minnesota), home-made chili (especially in a bread bowl), and the BLT. My only complaint was no Juicy-Lucy (another product of Kevin and Amy's home state of MN)... Come on, adding that was perhaps my only worthwhile piece of business advice! Amy has come up with an awesome Bloody Mary recipe, which can be a meal in-and-of-itself, and she and the others make a great martini. Stampmill always has on tap a few microbrews, at least one of which is a local, in addition to the usual assortment of beers and spirits. If you're in the area Stampmill is well worth a stop. (And if you visit Deadwood and don't make it up the four miles to Lead to see the spectacular Open Cut, next vacation don't waste your time and instead go to a town with real casinos...) read more

The service was good and the full bar was nice. Chairs are comfortable and I really liked the atmosphere- very casual and inviting. The menu offered some good options and we enjoyed the appetizers. I don't know if it's South Dakota? Or what? But wine, beer, and mixed drinks were really reasonably priced- in my home state they are triple the cost. read more

After being very disappointed with the tourist trap of Deadwood, we proceeded three miles up to Lead where my husband had cleverly made our hotel reservations. Such a relief to be in a real town after the faked up Deadwood. We were tired as we had also visited Devils Tower and driven from Sheridan. Stampmill is right across the street and that's about as far as we were willing to go - not getting back in the car. The menu is simple but what we had was well prepared. I had the burger which was cooked a little pink just as I asked. Sweet potato fries were yummy. Hubs had the pork chops which were moist and tasty. He liked the wild rice with it. And our margaritas were excellent. This is not a special occasion. fine dining place, but it was perfect for us tonight. The service was very pleasant. read more

We were staying at the Town Hall Inn and they recommended this place. We have been on the road for 3 weeks and this was one of the best meals we have had. This restaurant is pretty good and has nice atmosphere in a historic building. The staff was always friendly. Food is typical South Dakota fare - burgers, steaks, etc. I did enjoy their buffalo chili-topped fries. They did raise their prices a while back and it's hard for me to justify going there now. Probably the ridiculous two years of main street construction hurt them. Hopefully they can get back into the swing of things. read more

it was worst experience i have had, the food was so old that they had to call their wild rice fried because it was so old. the veggies where cold and the sauce on the chicken was so thick i had to use a knife to get to my chicken. .......wow i can't believe that they are in business read more

Just had a really nice Sunday evening dinner on the side deck at the Stampmill. The special was a seared prime rib with mushroom & marsala butter sauce, refried wild rice and fresh buttered almond green beans. Everything was prepared to perfection - a delicious refry of Saturday night's leftovers in this small but charming former mining town! The service was friendly and efficient.
