My wife and I visited Standard Sweets & Spices two days ago, our first visit since its reopening under new ownership. Relying on recommendations and samples provided by a very jovial and helpful owner, we ordered a takeout dinner which ended up being dinner that night and lunch yesterday. The food was so good we returned last night to sample more. Again, the dishes were delicious and the leftovers are today's lunch. Sooo good! The two-day order included: Fish Pakora (succulent seasoned white fish chunks deep fried with two sauces on the side); Samosa Chaat (yum); the amazing Butter Chicken; deeply flavorful Saag Paneer; delicious Garlic Naan; and a wonderful lamb dish that's not on the menu. We're lucky to have Standard Sweets & Spices in the neighborhood and will be back again very soon!
We have family that we often visit for Thanksgiving in this area, so we usually stop by here on the way home - I don't write updates to old reviews as often as maybe I should, but in this case, I feel like I need to, because they recently (as of last fall) became under new ownership, and it's rare to get to say that a place that was already great, just got even better. I've liked the place since we discovered it in 2013, but new ownership, among other things, is actually putting *prices* up for everything (though as of when we were there a few months ago, they were still working on it). The food is still the same - though the prices on their website are way more expensive than I'd remembered, it turns out that's because their website goes through some 3rd-party service that charges a bunch, fees that they then pass on to the consumer. The dine-in price was about what I remembered, ie very affordable for the quality. Their samosas still feel made in-house, are still great, and still make excellent samosa chaat (maybe eventually I'll get a different appetizer... probably not, though, it's just too good). We did try the lamb curry this time, which was a *little* bland, still pretty tasty - and great lamb). The store side still has the same great selection of hard to find Indian foodstuffs of all sorts (the main reason we stop here annually). The new owner, when she learned I hadn't tried any of the sweets at the front, despite it being in the name of the store, gave me a bunch of free samples, which was also smart of her, as now I'm totally in love with the milk bar, and am probably going to be buying more, roughly annually.) Super friendly person too - she was clearly excited to tell us about them and how they're made - and for the most part, they were all quite tasty (there was one that was just way too sweet, but some people probably like that one the best.)
Don't count this place out just because it's inside of a grocery store. That's where the best food spots are! The overall feel is very cozy and quaint and reminds me of eating at a home kitchen. The owner is extremely kind and helpful. The portions were excellent and the food was amazing. We were so full that we couldn't finish and had to take some home. Great Indian food in Fresno.
It's on blackstone and Dakota tucked into the back of a small Indian store. There's a little sitting area there and we ordered for dine in. They were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered the butter chicken, samosas, and garlic naan. Everything was really good. It was my first time dining in, but I normally door dash it when I'm craving it. Always good.
In the back of this tiny grocery market - which mostly consists of East Indian spices, grains, snacks, and baked goods - is a kitchen that serves up arguably some of the finest Indian dishes in town. The Samosa Chana is a must-order appetizer dish. It is a samosa dish served on top of chana masala, a savory Indian spiced chickpea curry that is a unique mixture of textures and bursting with flavors for the spices. Additionally, the samosas are some of the best I have ever had. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The potato and peas filling, with added onions and ginger, was thoroughly cooked yet remained very moist while piping hot. The crispy outer shell was not oily at all and had a soft center. It also tasted very clean. The owner of the store tells me that the batch of cooking oil is changed with every new dish in the fryer. This allows for a more efficient frying process, a cleaner taste, and no off-flavors. I have also never previously had Chicken Biyani quite as good as what I tried here. It is a flavor-infused rice dish with spices, nuts, and mixed with Tandoori Chicken. There were good portions of the savory chicken cutlets and the rice was on point: clean tasting, moist, and not too starchy. Again, the store owner says it is all due to superior cooking preparation using the best quality products. The rice that they use in this dish, he claims is the finest brand you can get. (The name of the brand escapes me at the moment.) He just happens to have this brand for sale, however, out on the store shelves near the front of the store. The Goat Curry was another delicious dish more people should be open to trying. Similar to lamb but more mild tasting without any of the gaminess. The meat easily fell off the bone and I was pleased with the portions of meat in the dish. Interestingly, both the store owner and the young lady that works the kitchen counter and busses the tables, as well as one of the cooks, are all vegetarian. So, obviously they cannot offer recommendations on the meat and seafood dishes that are prepared in the kitchen. Chaat is an appetizer or dessert dish that is a mixture of potatoes, yogurt, sweet spices, pieces of fried bread, chickpeas, and Dahi vada. It is a myriad of flavors and textures. I am not a huge fan of tart desserts but did finish the plate. Definitely an acquired taste for me. I am generally not too keen on Indian beverages, desserts, and bakery items. However, the pistachio cookie-like dessert - which I believe is called pistachio burfi - is a wonderfully crunchy, buttery, nutty fudge-like baked good. Another patron who convinced me to try it said it taste similar to a Chick-O Stick. She was not wrong. Usually, I will wait to try more of the popular dishes, like the Butter Chicken and Chicken Curry here, before I like to write my reviews. Unfortunately, it may be a while before I can make it back this way. As it stands now, Standard Sweets & Spices is a solid 4.5 and the best Indian food I have tried in Fresno so far. Moreover, all the dishes are very reasonably priced.
Love coming here. The ambiance and smell of their spices is wonderful. Music is lovely and calming. The gentleman took my order upon arrival. Enough space to stay and eat, but u decided to take it to go. I know their food will always be delicious, fresh, and full of flavor!
DELICIOUS FOOD. Don't be fooled by the dining inside a grocery store because their food is LEGIT. We've been here twice and it never fails. The menu is just the perfect amount of options. Come try them out !
I got to visit this special place. This is a grocery store and in the back they have the restaurant. They have seating available to enjoy the food there. I have always been curious about Indian food. So as always I open Yelp app and start browsing to see where is the best food at through my fellow Yelper's reviews. I came across this and started looking at the reviews and the suggestion and made my order on the phone. At first the app said it was closed but then I called and they said it was open. I ordered the samosa chona and it was a pouch kind of fried flower tortilla. It has spices and garbanzos with more condiments. It was so delicious. Really delicious!

A sit down restaurant/ grocery store. Food took about 15-20 mins but cooked fresh. We ordered butter chicken (a little on the sweet side) and chicken tikka masala and that was my favorite ! So spicy so delicious. Ordered fish pakora and also samosa. Both delicious however my only gripe is they didn't give me the green chutney dipping sauce for it which I love. This is a grocery style place that has a hot food counter in the back. I browsed the grocery aisles the first time I came inside here but didn't buy anything, this most recent time was with a friend and we ordered food at the counter. He got the butter chicken, fried cheese (I forgot the name of this one), and garlic naan; I got samosas chana and shahi paneer. Everything was DELICIOUS and fairly priced for the food you get! Both of our main dishes (butter chicken & shahi paneer) were about $14, don't remember the exact price of the smaller items but they were $7 or under. There were a few other people that came in while my friend and I ate, mostly it was just us two sitting though. I especially appreciated the water jug dispenser that was by the counter. I had a sore throat when I came and was able to make myself a hot tea (bag brought from home) :) read more

Love. Love. Love this place. It's the platonic Indian spot. Delicious, homemade food at the back of an Indian grocer. I had like 5 dishes. All insanely delicious. Standouts were butter chicken (obviously) and samosas chana. This is my go-to from now on when visiting Fresno. I'll probably go out of my way to go here. Drooling as I type this. Need an excuse to go visit Fresno! read more

Food was great well balanced spices, cook was making bread by hand(A+)owner came out and greeted us. And you don't have to get dressed up to eat here. Paid $20 bucks for my butter chicken and garlic naan.I left with a full stomach read more
After a day of checking out the new exhibits at the zoo we were ready to grub! We opted for something different that we couldn't really find in bakersfield. When we pulled up my wife said "this is a store". Correct! But the back has a kitchen/restaurant. After waiting a few minutes I ended up having to stick my head into the window and say excuse me. We went with the Garlic naan, butter chicken, goat curry and tika ( extra spicy). The employees asked us to look around and offered some tea while we waited for our food. The food was pretty tasty. Not as good as the Punjabi food truck in bakersfield for sure. Butter chicken - Everyone loved it , very tasty! 5 stars Tika- decent flavor , but it wasn't in a sauce which I am used to. It also was not Spicy! 3 stars. Goat curry- I am an uncultured fellow and dislike goat, blame my mom. She always tried to trick me into eating it as a kid telling me it was beef. My parents and wife thought it was tasty. Garlic naan- nice texture, definitely not enough garlic flavor on it. 3.5 stars. I would be back for that butter chicken. It was fire! read more
I ordered to go and I am not disappointed! Feeling bit under the weather so I wanted my favorite comfort food-aloo gobi! I've been told Standard Sweets & Spices has amazing butter chicken but I usually stick with tikka masala and I can't believe this is the first time after so long-the flavors are insane and the consistency of the sauce is perfect!!! So creamy and not greasy(as can be the case sometimes). The aloo gobi is cooked to perfection, so incredibly soft JUST before it gets too mushy. Everything is piping hot. I never eat the basmati rice but it looks and smells so good I may have to dig in. Speaking of, other restaurants charge more and don't include rice so there is already a great plus in value. I also ordered a hot chai and threw it over some ice :) Will be back for sure! read more

The chaat papdi and the chile bhatura were both delicious and were ready quickly. They have a good seating area where you can eat in, and they serve you with real plates, not disposable, which I appreciate since I try to limit the use of styrofoam in my life. I'll definitely be returning to try some other options. read more

Standard sweets & spices is one of our favorite spots! As soon as you walk in the store, you're greeted by the owners of the store and met with a variety of both fresh and packaged groceries. The groceries they sell are both imported and local goods. Their imported goods are decently priced and unique. They range from produce, freezer meals/foods/ grains, snacks, and more! In the back of the store, they have a restaurant where they serve some of the finest Indian cuisine in fresno. Their butter chicken is some of the best we've ever had. Creamy, tasty, and the chicken is super tender. The garlic naan is also a favorite, although sometimes the order is a bit light on the garlic. When checking out, the service is quick and nice. They have a glass case by the register with a variety of Indian sweets that are definitely worth trying. Each piece is sold by the pound, so they get a box and fill it to your liking and with what choices you'd like. My favorite sweet has to be the pistachio burfi. It's totally worth stopping by and checking out whether it be for the groceries or restaurant! read more

If your in search for some Indian cuisine around town this place has a fairly good menu and their garlic naan is really good! Price is pretty adorable and you get a plate of rice with most orders which we didn't know so of course like always, we over ordered lol. Small seating area so don't show up here with a huge party as they are a small grocery store but do provide some extra chairs and table to eat in the back, staff/owner here is very kind and friendly as well. read more

COVID-19 phase: My mother ordered a samosa, spicy chicken, mixed veggies and garlic roti. The worker was nice that took the order. The worker was nice. The place was pretty clean. They are not allowing food to be eaten there. Chairs are up. It smelled really good with the food cooking. We waited while they made the food fresh. Checked out and the worker was nice and welcoming. The spicy chicken tikka was really great! It had peppers and the chicken was cooked perfectly! A lot of flavor! The veggies were fantastic! Again, so much flavor! The samosa was amazingly delicious! So tasty! The white rice was fresh and good too! Loved the garlic roti too! Just a delicious lunch! My mother thought her half was "nice and fresh with good spices and good food!" You get a lot of food. Lots of delicious leftovers for many meals! Good service and delicious food! They deserve every star! Highly recommended! read more
