Definitely one of the best and quirkiest sports bars in town. Super small, so don't expect some cavernous place like Professor Thom's or 13th Step or Village Pourhouse. Love all the different pennants, banners, and posters hanging on the walls and ceiling. The beer selection is all craft brew, and typically with more than a few ones that will catch your eye. And free food on certain game days/nights. And if there is no food, you can bring your own. While the bar is def one of my favorites, the TVs definitely could be upgraded. And no hard liquor, but I guess with all the good beers they have, you might not need it some picklebacks after all. read more

Standings combines two of my greatest loves to outstanding effect- sports and great beer. Where can you watch 10 games at once and enjoy Golden Monkey at the same time? And free pizza on Friday nights? I wish this were my living room. Except for one thing. Standings has that guy. We'll call him the Urban Sophisticate Douchebag. This is the guy that is not your average drunken frathouse douchbag. Now, this douchebag fancies himself an intellectual (not nearly as intellectual as he thinks he is). This douchebag clearly prefers "in" jokes rather than cavorting with strangers. This douchebag stares at you with the corner of his guy thinking "why are these people in my bar?" This douchebag joins in on drunken reverie by saying something completely condescending. I guess I might be dangerously close to becoming one of those. I used to go here every weekend in college because it was always dead unless someone was throwing a party there. the beers were expensive but varied, ask for a beer list and take a look at I think was a Belgian import that costs a few thousand dollars for a bottle and you have to make an appointment. I used to call this place Brewsky's for some reason, I don't know if it was always called Standings. I usually had a good time here, the bartenders were always nice and friendly, and there's a tv for games and stuff. Its very old school, if you want a great beer list where they have to go downstairs to get it from the stash and a mcsorley's feel with less people and some music, this place is down the block. read more

I've been here 3 times, each good experiences. Note: I am a Red Sox fan. I randomly found this place in my searchings for a good Sox friendly place to watch the Sox-Yankees game one Friday this spring. This place seemed good, and as someone who is into beers, Standings appeared to be the right place to go. I read that they had free pizza at 8 as well, so extra incentive. Well, I get there and it's a pretty small establishment and was pretty crowded (which makes sense given the night), but I still had enough room to stand comfortably and put my beer down. The pictures on Yelp do a good job representing Standings. The place has a ton of HDTVs showing different games, though the Sox Yankees game was the big attraction that night and the sound was on (note, they showed it on NESN, not YES, so extra points for that). I was going to meet a friend, but she wasn't coming till later, so before I get my beer I talk to the bartender a bit about the beers, and while I can't recall what I had, it was pretty good and the guy seemed knowledgeable. Was $5 for a pint during happy hour, $6 otherwise, and this is for good microbrews, which they rotate often (though for losers they still have Guinness and Bud Light... please don't get these when you have such great options). But yeah, that night was fun, lots of Sox fans and a great atmosphere. Oh, almost forgot, the free pizza was good and plentiful (they get different toppings too!) I went there another night after my friends and I were wandering after dinner and they wanted to go to McSorley's which was too much of a zoo that night for us (or maybe just me, blech), so we went to Standings. It was not a big game night and a bit late, so it was kind of quiet and we all had seats at the bar. So it turns out that not only is it a good place to catch a game, but also a great place to get a good beer and relax with your friends. Just to note, all 3 times I went, the beer list was basically completely different. The 2nd time they had a lot of beers from Stone Brewery, I guess because they had just had a Stone beer event (events dedicated to beers, another positive). The third time was Victory Brewery heavy. Oh, and even if you order something like Stone IRS, which is 10.5% ABV, same price. Yikes, this review is going on too long. Love this place. As a person who actively dislikes sports, I would be expected to actively dislike Standings. But oh, that's not the case! Why? 1) The clientele is tolerable. Unlike most sports bars, this place is not packed with slobbering meatheads who sit around broing each other while they pound Miller Lights. 2) There's no music. Usually, this would be a minus, but I find it's quite charming in Standings. For one thing, you can actually have a conversation, and for another, it somehow makes the practice of watching sports seem more serious. 3) Good beer selection. 4) Memorabilia that entertains people who have no idea what it is. Bottom line: if you hate sports and your friend suggests going to Standings, don't flip out. It's not the hell hole you're expecting. read more

This is for sports and beer fans. Really good selection of craft beer. Lots of sports stuff lining the walls. Games on TV. It's small and I can imagine it gets packed for big games, but it looks like an awesome place to watch a game. It's hard to tell where the loyalties of the bar lie. There seemed like there was a Red Sox bias, and there was a lot of Mets stuff as well. But the was also a lot of Pittsburgh (all teams) stuff and the MLB standings which were written on a chalkboard had three exclamation points next to the 1st place Pirates and the last place Phillies listed as "sellers". Plus they had Iron City beer so I get the feeling there is a Pittsburgh loyalty. This seems like the kind of place where lots of different fans may claim a home depending on the game. Charming little bar with a great beer selection! I had the Abita Christmas and then Fisherman's something (I don't recommend the fisherman's...it tasted fishy (let me clarify - this was not a case of skunky on account of age or improper handling, this was just weird beer)). It seemed that they change it out pretty frequently. We had a connection to the owner, so of course I'm biased, and I was more than a few glasses in when we got here, but I loved the coziness. Probably my favourite sports bar in the US. I have come to look forward to visiting this place to watch games since first checking it our a couple of years ago. As soon as you walk in there are a few things that immediately grab your attention. The first being the array of banners, posters and paraphernalia hanging from the roof belonging to teams and colleges from all over the country. The second is the amount of HD tv's on the walls, meaning you'll never miss a game and depending which TV you stand in font of, the acoustics are worked out so that is the only game you will hear. The third thing you will notice is, hmmm, the lack of a female presence. But thats okay because you're generally coming here to have a few brews and watch the game with you buddies. read more

Went for NFL kickoff. It was pretty crowded in there, but I got a seat at the bar so it was fine, save the loud drunk people yelling in my ear to get a drink. Good beer selection, and the free pizza (!) was pretty good I think. Better than I was thinking free pizza would be. Plenty of TVs so it was no problem to see the game from anywhere. And they had the sound on, not that you could really hear it but still. I liked that they posted the Sunday schedule for each TV (plus which game would have sound), so I think I may be back just for that. This is bar none, the best sports bar that I've been to. I've been religiously coming for about 3 years now, from back when I lived in Jersey City to now that I've moved to Midtown West. Plenty of local options in Midtown West, and I have to admit that I take them sometimes. However, when I'm looking to watch a game or even just hang out, I come down to Standings. Great tap lines serving American craft beer that is constantly rotating - I haven't been in about a week, so I have no idea what's on right now (but even if I wrote it, it'd be out of date pretty much immediately). But look for things like Six Point Righteous Rye, Two Brothers Heavy Handed IPA, Lagunitas IPA, etc. For the less adventuresome, they have Bud Light and Guiness always on tap as well, but if you drink one of these while I'm there I will personally make great fun of you :) I love the "music" question below the review. If you're expecting music (other than maybe the Monday Night Football theme - hey, someone might like it :D), don't come here - they have the sound on one of the TV's, and never music - that's what makes this so far and above any other bar. DISCLAIMER: If there's a Red Sox game on, don't expect to have the sound on anything else :). They do have enough TV's to watch all of the football games on Sundays (I think, I tend to avoid it unless I can get there early since it tends to be a madhouse because of this). Oh, did I mention free food? Every Friday night, there's free pizza (ordered from Ray's around the corner). We were hoping to watch the FSU-Clemson game and the guy (manager?) was only putting it on one TV with three TVs for the ND game. The bartender had no personality and she would only get you a drink if you somehow got her attention while she was standing in a corner staring into the distance. I heard her tell another patron that she didn't like football; and she works in a sports bar, really? Standings is a sports mecca. It's a shrine to all the happiness that sports create for their fans. I don't care who wins. I hope your team wins, because you care. Sometimes I hope the Cal bears win, because I care a lot about them. What I truly care about is cheering, is jeering, is drinking, is having a wonderful time. Standings has more spirit in its little bar than every cheer-leading squad I've ever known; here I have learned why sports are important to our culture. It gets busy on big game nights, but is a cozy neighborhood spot on other nights. No meat-heads, no no-necks, no lame college boys doing shots - no shots. Just really awesome domestic micro-brews (and bud light for when you need a breather round, football can go all day) and a likelihood for free food. Check the website for schedules of crazy beer and team related events. Beers are $6 each, which is reasonable- it's Manhattan. Disclosure: I work here. Disclosure: I will mock you for ordering bud light, because it's gross and you're afraid of good beer. If you don't see a game on, ask the bartender nicely- you'll probably get to watch it, unless of course, the bar is totally packed and every screen is already taken. Just ask. If you don't know the beers, ask the bartender to help you find something you like. Refer to beer styles by flavor (malty, hoppy, mild, sweet) not color, which rarely has much to do with taste. Drink things on tap. No matter what, come ready to meet the kind of people you wish hung out in sports bars. Smart, interesting characters, who really really know their teams, love their teams, and are in it to win it. One of my favorite little haunts in New York. When I say "little," I mean it. Like, barely move your elbows in either direction without hitting the walls little. Like, make 3 steps in any direction and you may end up in some other bar on this block. But its size adds to the character. The beer selection is small, but it's all microbrews. There are many special theme nights throughout the year with regional beers and free food. Plus, there are enough TVs to go around for any sports fan that walks in. I once asked them to throw on a Canadian Football game - and they gladly complied, despite puzzled looks from fellow patrons. Stop by Standings, but don't take your friends. I am going to echo the majority of the reviews here without being redundant (I hope). This is the anti-sports bar of sports bars...Let me explain. This is not Blondie's. There aren't throngs of Ohio State fans looking to drink a gallon of Schlitz and punch someone. This is a tiny place that fans of good competition and great beer go. I have a real soft spot for this place mostly because they are one of the only places in the city that a) understands my Alma Mater's athletic tradition and b) makes itself available to my fellow alumni and I on game day. I went to Boston University where the only relevant sport is hockey...College hockey does, in fact, exist, and whenever there is a big BU game televised, they always show it. And for that I am appreciative. Bartenders are always nice, beer is always great, and the space itself is very cool. During commercial breaks from the games, I always have to be tapped on the shoulder when the action resumes because I am gazing at all of the cool flags/tee shirts/jerseys adorning the walls and ceiling. The atmosphere is fun, especially if you are part of a throng of alumni watching a big game...but it's also fun when the attention of the bar is split between games and you hear cheers four feet away from you, causing your eyes to dart all over the different TVs. The name Standings is entirely fitting. It's a small place, but what it lacks in space and an actual food menu, it more than makes up for in terms of character, the ability to see any (NFL) game you want, and great patrons. The 8 LCD TVs give you a 270 degree view of all your sports! Can't beat that! It's a great little no frills place. I'll be spending many NFL Sunday afternoons here. I came of (drinking) age believing that there is only one type of sports bar: the loud, crowded, frat-tastic, meat market type where the Coors Light flows like Gatorade being poured on the unsuspecting coach's head as the clock ticks inevitably towards victory. Being an alumnus of a Big Ten school and native of the Midwest, this bleak genre pervaded my formative college drinking years. Then 3 years ago I moved to New York and found Standings. It's truly a special place for real sports fans and real beer fans. No well drinks here, ladies and gents, just a great, constantly rotating selection of American craft beers. An interesting cast of regulars, fortunate drop-ins, and knowledgeable bartenders populate. Great small-town, basement sports den feel with something for even the most obscure (e.g. "IDAHO...YOU WILL NEVER WIN THE WAC!!!" is written on the men's toilet wall). It doesn't take more than one sitting at Standings for your favorite team's game to realize that there is more than one type of sports bar out there, but that this may be the only one of its kind. read more

AHH! Wandering into this sports mecca on a night like this should probably be some kind of religious experience. I mean, the place is wall-papered with banners representing almost every college and pro team, there are TVs mounted EVERYWHERE (all playing the Yankee game on this evening) and the place just screams out comfort and beer and a sort of coolness. (I hear there's free pizza on Fridays?) Anyway, all this sort of didn't matter on this evening when I realized the place was also jam packed with hard core, vigilant, angry PHILLIES fans who were screaming vile, unmentionable, vitriolic slurs about Mr. Jeter and his pinstripes. My heart starting beating faster and faster and I used the anger management techniques I learned in 10th grade health class to keep cool. However, this all became too much to handle after the bottom of the 6th sooo... we headed to Dempsey's and watched the game with our other kinfolk .... and, I mean, that's what it's all about. Pubs aren't really my thing, however, Standings is a great little sports bar to watch a game. People really get in the mood! I popped in here last Saturday night, since McSorley's got too crowded for my friends and they decided to move location and finish watching the Cardinals v. Red Sox game. Yes, place got a little rowdy--understatement of the month--when Uehara threw that last pitch. But, in all, not a bad way to spend an hour or three, alone or with friends. The beers are decent and reasonably priced. The decor, like others mention, is an organized clutter of sports memorabilia and rather fits the atmosphere. :) read more

Everybody knows that Professor Thom's is a Red Sox bar. I'm not sure that everyone knows that Standings is a Red Sox bar. It might also be a Mets bar, and the bar of numerous colleges, but what I think is glorious is that this place is a Red Sox bar. Not only that, they actually have the audio of the game too! Standings is actually really small, but every time I've gone it has been crowded but comfortable. It's a lot less busy than McSorley's down the street, and seems nearly as old. They have a number of great beers on tap and I try to stop in whenever I'm in the area. read more

My guess is, and it's probably been said before, it's called Standings because that is what you and your drinking buddies will be doing all night. When I say this place is tiny, I am giving it a complement. It's about the size of coat check closet. So if you get there on a busy night (any kind of major sporting event) you are going to be rubbing elbows. That being said, if you are headed there for a game that you want to be with fans it is the place to be. What kind of fans, that could change any given night. The decor? There isn't one spec of wall or ceiling showing, it is just covered in anything sports. At one glance it would appear to be a Chicago bar, take another look, now it's Boston, what's that over there? Maryland Terps gear, any team you can think of may be represented here. I was there for the US Soccer debacle vs Mexico recently. The atmosphere was cool because it was packed but everyone was into the game. Which started out great, so it was a blast. By the end of the night... meh.... but that's what a sports bar is. It gets a 3 because they did have some nice microbrews on tap and a sign that said Free Pizza 8pm on Friday. Otherwise it gets a Deuce. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it dive bar made for sports watching and beer drinking. Crammed in the same block as McSorley's and Jimmy's No.43, this similar bar provides a rotating beer selection and several tv's with all the games on. Seating is limited, although this usually isn't an issue on weeknights. No food here except some beef jerky they sell - which is delicious. But they'll let you ORDER IN. That's service! read more

I have no idea how people have given this place such a high rating. It has shaken my faith in the Yelp system. I don't live in NYC, but I visit frequently and have many close friends there. I know most of the great places known only to "locals" and I'm always in search of the real New York City feel. Standings is basically a poser and does not live up to it's self professed grandeur. Allow me to cut to the chase, it's average at best and is not worth the cab or Uber fare. The owner and his team want you to think the place is unique and cool. There appears to be a following, but I can't understand the attraction. Is it a cult? I was recently talking to a couple of bartenders about one of their own, Mike. He's the hardcore Boston guy. Gary runs a great real ale sports bar...one of a very few in Manhattan. The bar is a mecca for football and baseball but you can find pretty much any major sporting event on one of the 20 TV 's if it's taking place whilst you're there. The range of beers changes weekly and is kept in excellent condition. The bar is very small and has a friendly local feel, Gary often has special nights offering things like free pizza or similar. - The only thing I can say against it is they don't like the Yankees...they're Boston/Mets fans. It was mostly young 20 somethings (which is totally fine but I definitely felt my 26 years there) I wouldn't be sad to go again if my friends wanted to hang there, but I would not be the driving force behind it. read more

Went here for the EURO 2012 Final and the viewing accommodations were great. Some friendly people at the table next to us ordered a TON of pizza and wings and were generous enough to share the wealth. We got there about 45 mins before kick off and grabbed a table right by the door. All was fine until the place started getting crammed with people. The poor little A/C was blasting air but to no avail. If you're one of those people who doesn't like the swampy-shorts feeling or sticky shirt to the back feel, then this place is one you may want to avoid on a crowded afternoon. Standings only saving grace was the beer selection. $6 a pop wasn't too bad for a hole in the wall bar and I did like the opportunity to experiment (New London/San Diego Pale Ale) outside of the norm. Would I go back? Sure. But I won't recommend this to folks on a night where you know lots of people from the area will be there to watch a big match or contest. read more
