I couldn't believe there is a Staples located in Washington Heights. Well it is further out than the pedestrians in a quiet place than the main streets. It is actually underneath a parking lot. This Staples is very boring and not like the other locations with more stuff to buy. This one is more like copying and printing paper. I like Staples! Actually I have a strong predilection for office supplies, office products or stationery items since childhood as it reminds me of school including my undergraduate college days. I have a lot of pens (some were gifts), standard copier paper, specialty paper, journals, notebooks and 3 ring binders. It is becoming harder and harder to physically shop at a traditional brick-and-mortar office supply store due to the rise of ecommerce as competitors of Amazon.com. I have a Staples loyalty card for over four decades as I have spent a lot of money with this corporation. In less than several months earlier and now I have returned to Staples again... I'm back! I entered this business the second week of September where within the New York City metropolitan area is the beginning of the academic school year for Back to School shopping. There was a short line at the register for a female teenager who purchased notebooks with her father which sorrowfully reminisce mirrored memories with my own beloved father who purchased notebooks for me in my high school years. My father valued and appreciated education including lifelong learning who used notebooks. This location is accessible via MTA NYC Transit A train at 181th Street between 184th and 185th Streets in Washington Heights, New York, NYC. This Staples location is gargantuan retail space. I briefly wondered through the aisles but was able to attain standard copier paper. Printer ink cartridge prices has risen to the eternal sky for four decades of purchasing the same manufacturer (different model numbers through the years), but I still have the need as the essential component of a printing device. Color printer ink cartridge high exorbitant cost is verifiable egregious than black ink, but it is also another desideratum of mine. Every time a cashier rings these items at the register I always shrill a loud cry of utter financial pain ubiquitously as I have absolutely no shame. Will you share with my suffering? Customer service at the register by a young female associate is very attentive as she exhibited compassion with genuine empathy and understanding for today's plaguing egregious cost of living expenses who "price match" on her handheld device enabling to reduce my two items' respective prices. I am very grateful for this Staples associate who is very helpful, but did not obtain her name. The price reduced further as I utilized my loyalty rewards points for redemption. Wow haven been to a staples in a while. Just thought hey I can walk To Staples instead of ordering off of Amazon. Everything was fine for the most part. The lights are bright and the floor is carpeted, classic Staples. Now where things get hairy was during check out. We had to wait an unusually long time cause an old man was in front of us. I figured he was struggling to check out which was fine. We are chucking out, total wad $102 and the guy goes you want a $20 coupon for signing up. I'm like ummmm sure. Turn into I have to download an app and create a password while I'm standing there. This man was clicking on my phone to hep speed up process like he's done this 100x today... meanwhile a line is growing behind me. HES THE ONLY CHECKOUT PERSON. There's no hope for the people behind us. After I've given an arm and a leg and have a new app I didn't want we were able to leave. I then fought with my girlfriend after and really contemplated the purpose of life. Existential crisis and brown slushie snow all over the ground. I've lived nearby and have been a customer at this store for more than a decade. The staff in every department is consistently helpful and courteous, whether I am looking for a particular item in the store, trying to decide what kind of printer to buy, or trying to figure out how to print or scan documents. This is a busy location, and sometimes customers become impatient or frustrated and sometimes are outright rude and aggressive, but the staff consistently handles themselves well. They really provide exceptional customer service, sometimes under difficult circumstances. read more

Today my family and I had a horrible experience with a cashier. I felt really discriminated by the cashier, she was really mad just because my dad tried to tell her something and she couldn't understand what he was saying. She was very annoyed and pissed because she had to repeat a price twice. And let's talk about the manager, he/ she never came out when I was arguing with the cashier. I wish I could agree with Jason, who wrote the previous review. Here are the issues with this store, where conditions and service need improvement: 1. The store needs cleaning. Carpet and surfaces are dirty and worn. 2. Employees need to be present on the floor to assist customers, not in the back room. 3. Employees need training in locating merchandise so as not to waster customers' time. 4. There need to be more cashiers since there is ALWAYS a line, even when the store is not busy. 5. Someone needs to be on call so as to appear immediately in case a customer wants merchandise that is under lock and key. 6. The sidewalk on the side street (W. 184th St.) is always filthy, with lots of trash and garbage in the tree wells--even a dead rat last year. If it's the landlord's responsibility, then it's up to you to the store to get after the landlord. I'm really hoping the management of the store can be overhauled. So went to buy two 2TB internal hard drives, was greeted by someone who told me where they were. They then pawned me off to someone else who then got busy so I was pawned off to the original person who was helping me. I was then accompanied to the front of the line where I waited for the counter associate to get free. The person who was holding the product box suddenly disappeared and then I was called to the counter. I took the empty is she had left behind and went to the counter. The person then said, oh yes we have to get that for you. So I waited while they helped TEN customers. After that the lady told the person who was next to her, what happened to this and showed him the empty box. He said what looked like "I don't know". This review was written WHILE WAITING for them to figure out just WTF was going on. This is a staples problem and not a sales associate problem. Out of SIX counters, only ONE was open. These huge corporate box stores literally pay slave wages and don't keep their stores adequately staffed and yet reap huge profits for their SOB CEO's. I'm still waiting for the product 15 mins later while the associate still chats along with her co workers while I type out this damn review in front of her face. Pay nothing, you get nothing - hear that corporate staples. Your brand is pathetic and you're just like a utility company now, we only use you because we have to. You hire just about anyone to work at your stores and don't care what you pay them so they don't care whether customers are happy or not. This location is an embarrassment to the Staples brand. Here's why: I went in today to do the simplest thing possible: Print ONE copy of a two-page letter on a color printer, using heavy ("resume") stock paper. First, I waited ten minutes while the sole person behind the counter dealt with some UPS drama--the kind that just never seems to end. Okay, fine, it happens. So I asked a floor staffer if they could get someone behind the counter. Answer: "She's the only one behind the counter." Thanks, no really, Thanks. I waited a bit longer. Then I saw a woman who looked like the manager. I asked her the same question. She told me that even if someone DID help me, that I would have to put in the ORDER and come back. What she brilliantly suggested is that I go buy a $10 or so package of the paper I want to print on (waiting on another interminable line), then print it myself. Genius, shear genius. I went and got the paper--but skipped the line, figuring I'd pay for it on my exit. I went to print the doc, and the screen said "Unreadable format, ask clerk for assistance." For a MS-word 97-04 file? Really? Game over. I left. This place is a joke--and I'm going to say it always has been, but it's pretty much the only game in the neighborhood. I cannot figure out what the problem is, but I always leave this store irritated or without what I need. Today, they had no replacement soda stream cartridges and the cashier had no idea when they would have more ("maybe like in a week?") I waited in line for ten minutes to find that out, which is a modest line there. The store is organized and a few workers are friendly and helpful, but on the whole service is indifferent and while they purportedly offer shopping, printing and other services, it's not easy to use them or get help. I've waited 15 minutes to drop a package and get a receipt, at least 15 to pick up a copy job I submitted online and was paid for...and so on. I try to avoid going but they are in the neighborhood and most of the little local shops are closed. read more

TIP: If you are coming to make copies, bring your documents on a flash drive instead of logging into your email when you get there. You'll have to pay to use their computer. The systems were having issues during my visit, so there was a very long wait to check out. That being said, many of the associates were working together to try and remedy the issue. 2/5 because I called before coming, and the associate did not tell me I would have to pay to use the computer if I didn't bring a flash drive. Yes, the store needs a TON of work. But the staff is a pass for all wrong with the esthetics of this location. Whomever the young man behind the printing desk is (thin w/ glasses) is a gem. I've never actually needed his help but have seen the miracles he's performed for a whole host of issues. And the worst, they don't carry the right size CO2 cartridge for my SodaStream, even though they are supposed to be a supplier. I've been there 5 times and each time they somehow manage to be out. At Fed Ex it was $6. I went to this Staples branch because I was in the vicinity. I wanted to print some photographs from my email and was directed to a nearby computer. You have to put your credit card in and they charge you .30 cents for each 2 1/2 minutes. I told them I wanted to print on high quality paper. SO, I sign in, find the photos and have to wait for them to load the high quality paper in. I print, then tell them that I need another 11 pages of the high quality paper. They load it 10 minutes later, all the while my credit card is being charged. I print, then nothing happens. I let them know - meanwhile, my credit card is still being charged - and they saunter over a few minute later and determine that the printer is out of ink. The 2 workers and the supervisor were slower than molasses. More than that, they didn't care. Consequently, I will NEVER return to this Staples, and would advise you to do the same. This is in stark contrast to my documented experience at the Riverdale Staples yesterday. And the worker there was 85! Oh, how prescient I was. Here Is that review: 5/17/2018 One of my pet peeves is the decline of customer service in practically every situation I encounter: restaurants, bars, utility companies, etc. So, it is refreshing when someone provides not only good, but exceptional customer service. Such was the case when I went to this Staples branch earlier today. I am a notorious pen saver. There is just something about writing pens that I love. The other day, I decided to clean house and went through my entire collection of pens (google the Collyer brothers), which numbered in the hundreds. I divested myself of the overwhelming majority of them, opting to donate them to local agencies. However, I was stuck with a problem. Some of my favorite writing utensils had no ink. As I entered Staples, Andrew, the lovely elderly gentleman, asked if he could be of assistance. After 25 minutes, we found all the refills I was looking for. He was patient, engaging and reminded me of the customer service that was prevalent when I was a kid. During the course of our conversation, I asked if he minded if I asked his age. I would advise you to go to any other Staples in NYC and definitely NOT this one. The customer service is awful, it does not exist. This location is the only one remotely near where I live, though I'm never in the area. One day I had to print documents in a hurry since my printer was not working. First their printer would not recognize the PDF files on my flash drive. Second, when I went to print from one of their computers, someone had left thick, glossy paper in the printer which ended up being the paper for my print job. I had to run, and was annoyed that I had to leave without my prints anyway, and the woman behind the counter told me I could come back to get a refund for said error, since the line was too long to process it then. Third, I come back two months later because I could not get back there any earlier, and because I used a staples copy card to print that job, apparently I could Not get a refund for their mess up. Unless I find another receipt from that print job with a SKU # on it, there's no way to prove that those papers were printed at their Staples, so they're denying me a refund, even though I showed them the receipt from the money I put ON the card to print that job. Now, I like Staples. However, this incident has been nothing but a headache and the people behind the counter could care less. Don't come here if you're in a hurry to print, don't use a cash card in the computer, and plain and simply, don't come to this Staples. I don't want you to have the experience that I had. So I was looking for an item from staples and I found the item but I wasn't able to physically obtain it because it was only shown for display. I found an employee that works there and asked her do you have this item. She said "come over to the counter and i'll give you the item there". I then said thank you and she said you're welcome. I then waited for her to get the item near the cashier and lord and behold she came with the desired item fairly quick, quicker than I expected. She gave me the item and I thanked her. I went to the cashier to pay for my item and he said have a good day and I said you too. Overall I had a great experience shopping at this particular staples. The employees were nice and they were pretty quick. Also they're pretty laid back people. Just don't ask them to Copy & Print your papers. read more

It's a fairly large Staples with parking on the roof. I've seen cheaper office supplies elsewhere so I just go here for printing/copying. Plus that you can email PDFs and you can just pick it up. Big minus that if it's not a PDF (e.g. a Word document) they will charge upwards of $2 for a single page for "formatting" and though they claim that copies are 11 cents (both on signs all over the store and when you ask an employee), it's actually 12 cents. read more

Wow. This computer/printing workstation is a joke. Every single time I go almost none of the computers or printers are working. Don't bother asking the employees for help. I'm already being charged by the minute on the slowest computer to exist since dial-up internet but then trying to get the attention of a sales person for help while the meter is running is hopeless. Once you have their attention they will most certainly not help you. The girl behind the counter literally didn't even turn around to acknowledge I was speaking to her she just shook her head no. It is, literally, either a freak act or supernatural force of nature that must keep this viscerally unnerving store open. I went there today to try out office chairs, but found the floor models were decrepit and the various features didn't work on any of them. The staff had vacant stares and wandered in and out of the store as if they were under some kind of mind control. An employee told me that "the school sales had ruined the chair display." I imagined demonic children deliberately destroying the 'chair display.' Children of the damned, no doubt. The decrepit and viscerally disturbing ambiance was enhanced by floors that I don't believe had EVER been cleaned and items on shelves that I had an ominous feeling were inhabited by poltergeist. The staff wandered around as if they were in trances, which further reinforced my feeling that this store was caught either in a time warp or under satanic control.
