I had a 1970 Mercedes 280sl that I owned for 10 years. The first week that I owned it, I was referred to Bob at Star Motors by the Mercedes Benz Club. He was wonderful. I paid him to look the car over and give me advice about what was important to take care of immediately, and what could wait. I purchased an after market air conditioning kit and he installed it flawlessly. I live in Potomac, and one day my car stopped working in Bethesda. Rather than take it three blocks away to the local Mercedes dealership, I had it towed to Bob at Star Motors for worry free service with professional integrity, knowing that they would solve the issue with spot on diagnosis. I was correct. He found the loose ground wire and I was driving the car the very next day. Finding an auto shop with this level of integrity and customer service is rare. My car broke down at the end of the work day on the Friday before the Christmas holidays. It just conked out mid-turn at a 3-way intersection. Some good samaritans helped me roll it into a parking lot. After checking YELP, I called Star Auto. They were just closing but after a brief conversation, Bob said he'd come over to see if he could get my car started. He arrived quickly and gave the roadside repair option a good try -- but no go. So we called a tow truck. Bye, bye car. Then Bob showed what a gentleman he is an offered to drive me and my groceries several miles so I could make an appointment. Now well after his work hours on a Friday night and a four day closure for Christmas. The shop reopened on Wed. (after the holiday) and both Bob and Tammy kept me posted on the diagnosis (which was a mystery) and the estimated cost. There was clearly something wrong with the electrical system. When a fuse was replaced it blew immediately. But Bob was determined to figure it out and was even willing to have a call with my long-time, trusted shop. After lots of research and noodling, it was decided that the main relay needed to be replaced and so the part was ordered. Bob drove to PA to get the part over the weekend so the job could be finished on the following Monday as promised. He added an hour to the bill and explained it. I'm guessing he spent a lot more than an extra hour on my car between the diagnosis, getting the part and making the fix. And, the car is now running as it should - thank you Bob, Tammy and the Star Auto team! Finding this kind of customer service is rare indeed. If you're in the Towson area, Star Auto works mainly on foreign cars. You can't go wrong here...give them a try! read more

So I drove my car around for 2-3 months and got used to the stiffness. However i got married in April and my husband drove the car and was surprised at how stiff the handle was. He asked how I drove this for 3 yrs like this. He convinced me to call Star Auto to talk w them. I spoke w Tammy who again was very helpful and told me to bring the car in and that they would have a look. I took it in, I guess one of the guys drove it and I was told that it was fine and not stiff. Thinking.."ok whatever", i brought the car home. Next day, my husband drove it again, comparing it to his car and said it is really stiff and that I should talk w them again. So I talked to Tammy again and she asked me to bring it again. Bob, I believe he's the owner, drove it and said it was indeed stiff. However since the warranty is only for 2 yrs, they were not sure if they could get the parts for free and said they will speak w the sales rep and give me a call. I waited for about a week but no call back so called yesterday and left a message since nobody was picking up. Tammy called later and left a VM saying the good news is that we can get the parts for free but the labor fee will be $716 and alignment fee will be $125. I was happy about the parts being free but was shocked at the fact that they would charge me for the labor fee and alignment fee. I thought since they got the parts for free, they would waive me the labor fee and any fees related since they are the ones that put in the defective rack and pinion in the first place and told me to drive around and see. I understand that its been 3 yrs but I feel that they should have asked me to bring it in right away to drive it themselves, not ask me to drive it around for like a month to see if the stiffness gets better (I'm no expert in cars and how do i know if the stiffness I feel is stiff if I get used to it?). I obviously got used to it and didn't realize it was abnormal anymore after driving it for so long. I feel that since they placed the defected rack and pinion in the first place, should replace the whole thing for free and waive the labor fee and do this for free. I just called and left a message for Tammy to give me a call back. Hopefully Bob can do this all for free in their good faith.. I mean I wouldn't be in this place if they placed a GOOD non defective rack and pinion in the first place. I really do appreciate Tammy though for doing her best to get this sorted out for me. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. I rarely ever write reviews for ANYTHING I do unless it has stricken me extremely necessary. This is one of those cases. A snowy weekend in Towson left my entire car covered in a layer of ice. I got into my car and after some defrosting tried rolling down the (automatic) window. It didn't work, so I removed some ice around the edges and tried again. It slammed down into the door and would not come back up. After some research my father came across these Yelp reviews and suggested Star Auto Service. I took my car here and they told me I needed to replace the Window Regulator and it was going to cost $491. I told Star Auto that I didn't have the funds (being a student) and asked if they could at least prop the window up, since it was snowing and raining at the time. They said it wasn't possible to prop it up and proceeded to give me a $63 labor fee for doing absolutely nothing, which was understandable... I guess. We took my car to my father's work (he's in the Coast Guard) and he had some friend mechanics owe him a favor so they checked it out. Apparently, the regulator was fine and intact. The window was just off of the hinges like we expected and was a quick fix. Calm and collected I called Star Auto Service back up and after a short conversation they returned my $63 back. I'm sure the other posts are written by Star Auto themselves or maybe lucky customers that have had the better end of the deal but, I will go out of my way to prevent others from going through what I fortunately avoided. This event would have went a lot different if I had paid the $491 and found out it was for nothing. FOR ANYONE THAT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE READING EVERYTHING: Star Auto Service lied and said my window regulator was broken and needed replaced when the window was actually just off of track. They tried charging me $491 for a job that was only worth the labor. Please do not support this unjust type of business. read more

Tammy is very accommodating and helpful and the work is always done right. I recommend all of my friends. What compelled me to write this review? I brought my car in think something was REALLy wrong with it. They could have easily said it needs a new this, that, and another... I wouldn't have known the difference and I'd have paid it. This place was awesome! I called to get a Maryland State Inspection they fit me in the same day I called. I got there and they started my car right away. I was in and out in less than an hour and very satisfied! I brought my two kids with me and they brought them crayons and gave them snacks while we were waiting. Thanks to fellow Yelpers who gave Star Auto wonderful reviews, I was inclined to try this auto shop out. I've had awful experiences in getting my Audi properly serviced at Valley Motors in Cockeysville (too many trips to get to the root of a problem in addition to a lack of confidence in Valley Motors' mechanics). I was at my wit's end and decided to try Star Auto to tend to problems that the Valley Motors couldn't fix. I'm very glad I followed my instincts. I brought my 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro in to Star Auto this morning and was given such wonderful service and personal attention. The mechanic (Rocky) explained my car to me in more detail, even showing me exactly how some of the parts interfaced with each other. How many times has a mechanic allowed you to see the car from their vantage point? Even before the moment I walked into the door, I knew this shop places a high emphasis on customer service. All of my emails were promptly handled by Tammy. When I walked into Star Auto for the first time today, it felt like I was welcomed into a family. No more Valley Motors for me. I highly recommend that if you give Star Motors a chance to work on your car. As one of the reviewers mentioned, this shop is non-descript. I've driven past it countless of times. But it's what's inside that really counts. And inside you'll find staff who have been there a long time, who have deep expertise, and who don't rip you off. In fact, I was told by Rocky that I didn't need to have as much work done to my car which saved me lots of money. He even thought to fill my spare tire while he was doing my oil change. Best mechanics, hands down! Need a state safety inspection, this is the place! They will not rip you off. My inspection took only 45 minutes. I've also had an oil change done and new tires put on. Hit a pot hole on the expressway on Weds night creating a large bulge on the sidewall of front tire. Called Star on Thursday morning to schedule a replacement. Tammy offered to get the tire and schedule me for later that afternoon! I couldn't get there that soon (I work in PA) but scheduled it for Fri morning. In and out in about an hour, included balancing and an alignment check (I asked for the realignment but Rocky had it checked and said it didn't need it, no charge!) This is the second A8 that I've owned and have had both serviced by Star for the past seven years. Wouldn't consider going elsewhere. read more

My daughters in school in Towson. She was coming home for break March 2016 when she noticed oil service was overdue. I checked some reviews, found a place nearby but they were too busy to take her that day or schedule the next day. They did say she could wait but her schedule prevented it. I called Star next and they told me they were busy but if she left it they would get her a ride to school and have it done before she left for break. Sounds good! Told them make and model and synthetic oil. Was quoted $59.99. Daughter picked up car, bill was for $92.95. Called to complain, they told me they were sorry, quoted me wrong price over the phone but next time in I would receive 10% off service coupon. Next Time? Doubtful. read more

Would never recommend this place!!!!!!!! I would not like to give it any stars!! I'm a young female I went there by myself because my car was not running well on the way to work. Having seen the great reviews on yelp I went to them. All the quotes they were giving me seemed very high! But not knowing the area well and being pressed for time left me with not too many options. In the end they charged me $150 for a diagnostic check, something that typically costs about $50. And $50 for an oil change, I typically pay in the mid to high 30's....I confronted them about the huge jack up and they played dumb... They also were unable to tell me what was wrong with my car and said that it could be several things and they wouldn't be able to figure it out until they actually did the several things they assumed it was... LADIES please do not feel comforted by the woman they have at the front desk, she is the biggest scam artist and is not looking out for anyone. She puts on a good song and dance. In regards to the other reviews that are listed here, and after my experience with them, I believe they were written by people close to that business or people who work there. I would not recommend any female to go there and it is not much of a family place, it's a dump. In the end I paid $200 for an oil change.... read more
