(Short Version) This review ended up being long, so for anyone that doesn't want to bother reading through it, let me simply say that I have 100% confidence in this business and feel very fortunate to have been referred to them. They've done great work on my car, I trust everything that they say, I've walked out of there paying less than I thought I would need to each time I've been there, and they're really friendly and awesome to work with. It's such a weight off my mind to know that when I have a problem with my car, it will be in great hands at Star. Also, I live in San Francisco - it's well worth the drive (or tow) to have Star work on my car. (Long Version) I was referred to Star Auto earlier this year by a friend, and my experiences with them have been excellent. I'm on my third Mercedes now, and the mechanic that I used to use moved out of the area in 2015, so I had to start from scratch with finding a new mechanic. I know nothing about cars - I never learned how to change my own oil, etc., and the one time I rolled the dice on a mechanic to replace my breaks, I walked away wondering if I had been fleeced when I was talked into approving and paying for other repairs that were discovered during that visit - to the tune of approx. $1k. Maybe I was and maybe wasn't - I simply have no idea. I've now been to Star on two occasions: - The Terrible Squeaking Noise Situation - When I was initially referred, my car was making a terrible squeaking noise which emanated from my front end every time I drove on uneven road or hit a small bump, etc. Thinking that it could be related to my suspension, I first I went to where I bought my tires - I needed them rotated anyways. They said they identified the problem, and gave me a quote that was approx. $800 (from memory) with parts and labor. At that point, on my friend's referral, I went to Star. I described the problem and showed them the quote. First, they told me that while all of the work that I had been quoted could be done on the car, only one thing was actually causing the noise, and that the other thing wasn't necessary to work on to fix the problem. My bill was only approx. $200 (again, from memory). But it could have been even less - on their recommendation, I had (whatever it was that was broken, can't remember the name of the part) the part replaced on both sides, even though only one was causing the noise. But Joe stressed that if I was only concerned about the noise, I only needed to replace one on the left side, which would have been cheaper. Anyhow, problem totally resolved. - The Jacked Transmission Situation - I just picked my car up today from my 2nd Star visit. Last weekend, my car became stuck in 1st or second gear. I called Joe at Star, and arranged to have my car towed to his shop. (BTW, as it turns out, he correctly diagnosed the problem on the phone before I even towed the car to him). It turns out that the problem I experienced with my 2007 E350 is, unfortunately, quite common for the year and make of my car. One forum that I was on said, "Having to replace the valve body will cost between $2,000 and $3,000." Joe only charged my $1,500 plus tax. If you need a Mechanic for your Mercedes (I've seen other brands of cars there too), do yourself a favor and make an appointment with these guys. read more

I LOVE these guys. I have had my car here for three (totally unrelated) issues and each time they have been FAST, HONEST, EFFECTIVE, COURTEOUS, and REASONABLY PRICED. The other day, I stopped in without an appointment when my check engine light was on. They found the problem (a loose vacuum hose) and fixed it while I waited (less than 20 minutes) and would not let me pay them anything. You just don't get that kind of service at any service stations around my house, so I drive 35 miles (or tow as the case may be) to take my car there anytime there is something wrong with it! I am SO happy with their service, I will never take my car anywhere else again. read more

I'm always too lazy to write a review, but this place is awesome. I have a 1994 C220 that just made it past 100k miles last year and started to have problems. I brought the car into Joe's care and I always get it back at the promised time with the problem fixed. Work that other places claim to require a week to finish this place gets it done within the day - that's how ridiculously good this place is. I read previous reviews claiming that they returned the vehicles fixed, but in dirtier condition such as new oil smudge marks left behind on the exterior or interior of the car. So far I have not experienced any of this. This is my place to go for all future repairs. read more

Everyone in our family takes our Mercedes, Lexus, Honda here for service since 2010. They are always fast and reliable with best price in town. I had to open a yelp account to comment on my recent experience at the shop. My dad accidentally crossed wire the jump cable when he was in a rush to leave. That killed the battery which my boyfriend could replace easily. However, after putting in new battery, engine light and slip indicator appeared and also the gas pedal wouldn't accelerate the car any faster than 20mph. Due to the acceleration issue, we didn't want to drive far so we check in with the autoshop at the corner of my house which is only 2 mins away. They tried to scare us on all sort of potential problems with the car and of course quote couple hundreds or more depend on their findings. My boyfriend decided to drive the car with emergency light on so we can go at 20mph to Star Auto Services. As suspected, the autoshop near my house was really out to cheat us. Star Auto mechanic diagnosed and figured it was the computer chip in the car that got fried when we crossed jump cable. They fixed the car on the spot for us at no charge! We couldn't have been more thankful and impressed with the integrity behind Star Auto work. Will recommend even more friends n family here. The relief of entrusting your car to a knowledgeable and honest shop is priceless. read more

So i called numerous shops on a sunday for quotes on my Mercedes Benz. On monday, Joe from Star Auto was the only one to return my call and give me a quote. The price quote was very fair and he said if i brought it in that morning he could have it done. I dropped off my car around 10 and they had it done by 3.......This was a difficult job as well. This review is long overdue. I had taken my Mercedes to Star Auto back in December 2015 sometime around Christmas. I was having some major problems with my Mercedes right at Christmas time and I had never had to bring this car into a shop for any mechanical problems, so this was a first for me. I went online to find a trustworthy mechanic that specializes in Mercedes, and I came across Star Auto and started reading there reviews. I was really impressed by them, so I decided to give them a call and I sure am glad I did. I spoke with Joe, the shop manager. Lets just say I was a wreck, everything seemed to be going wrong and falling apart for me and it was about a week til Christmas. Joe was so professional and just a really nice person, he listened to everything I had to say, he put my mind at ease. I arranged a time to drop my car off, at first I was skeptical of the location but you can't judge a book by its cover. Joe let me know that he would be giving me a call with an estimate and what needed to be done, he called the next morning. So I know my car was needing a service B my brakes were starting to grind and electrical was malfunctioning etc. The day I dropped my car off, I forgot my cell phone in my car and when I realized I gave Joe a call and told him I had no way to get back over there to pick it up. He said well were do you live, I can drop it off for you, no problem. So I gave him my address and I had my phone within 15 min. I was so worried about finding a trustworthy mechanic until now. Kevin, the main mechanic is thorough and professional, just an honest person that put my mind at ease. These guys know there business and do s great job without breaking your wallet. Took my BMW here to replace the brake pads. I heard of this place from a friend who used to go to Joe even before he had his own shop. Yes the place doesnt have the waiting area with coffee/donuts and all the other free goodies the dealer has. BUT guess what, those aren't free! Wonder why the dealer cost so much? they have to pay for thos donuts and nice waiting area some how! The price was close to 40% what they were charging me at the dealer. The mechanics all used to work at the dealership for either BMW or Mercedes. Joe is fair and he uses the same parts the dealer uses. No courtesy car while you get your car done, but no inflated price too! read more

The owner, Joe, used to work on the Mercedes we bought from a private party. No mechanics were available for a pre-purchase exam, so the seller offered to have Joe do it for us at our expense. I called Joe myself prior to our appointment and he confirmed that he would do the pre-purchase exam himself. We arrived on time for the exam, and Joe changes the story to, "I have no time for a pre-purchase exam". Then why the heck did the jerk tell me 30 minutes before that he DID have time? We proceeded to question Joe about the mechanical state of the vehicle, which he has worked on for several years. He told us the vehicle had "No major problems" and showed us a service record showing only minor maintenance issues like oil changes, leak repairs, etc. What he neglected to tell us was that the automatic transmission was in serious need of a rebuild, the A/C had no refrigerant, the fuel lines are leaking, and the steering arm needs a rebuild. Also, my mechanic says Joe never bothered to even clean the engine compartment after repairing the leak, so there is oil and diesel fuel all over the undercarriage which will cause the existing hoses to deteriorate. Shoddy work by Star Auto at best. Total cost of repairs will be about $3500. I call that a "MAJOR PROBLEM", so I can only surmise that Joe lied to help his customer sell a car. Not the type of business I would patronize, nor should anyone else. Frankly Joe, you are a lying, incompetent piece of poo. read more

I was told to go here by the used car dealership I bought my bmw from because they said that they would take care of my check engine light and they would take care of the cost. When I brought it in Joe said it would be ready the next day only to pick it up and have the engine light come back on within 10 min of driving it. I had to take the car back then was told it was a VANOS problem which I don't understand why he didnt catch that the first time he "fixed it" but my car had to stay there for a week and not once did I receive a phone call with any updates. A month later the light goes on again so I decided to take it to a different shop which found 4 problems which he said had been there for awhile. I told them about my supposed new parts that I recieved and the new auto body shop said the parts didnt look new and the previous shop confused a VANOS problem with what actually was 4 completely unrelated problems. Very unprofessional and not reliable. I will not return here, not trustworthy at all!! read more

I came to Star Auto after my mechanic and the dealer failed me. It took my mechanic 3 attempts and several hundred of dollars to diagnose the problem to my 2008 Mercedes ML 350. Even then, the job was too big for his shop. So he suggested that I take my car to the dealer. I got a quote which floored me. There was no way I was going to pay for that. I started looking for other shops on Yelp where I met Al with Mercedes Connexion. He told me he does not do this kind of work but highly recommended Star Auto. He has known and worked with Kiet and Joseph for awhile. All the customers he had referred to Star Auto had been very happy. He added that they specialized with the work related with the engine. In my case, it was the balance shaft. Taking my car to Star Auto is one of the best decision I ever made. They are accommodating; they told me to take the car in anytime. They are fast; they finished the work in 1/2 the time the other mechanics and the dealer told me. Looking back, it seems like the other shops and the dealer were drumming up how much work it was so they can charge me more. They are accurate; the repair was completed exactly in the time and cost they quoted me. They take the extra step; my brake light was not working and they fixed it for me at no charge. My car runs so smoothly now that my wife and I keep telling ourselves that the car feels like new.
