Enthusiasts take great care of their cars, and we're constantly looking for a great shop because we typically go above and beyond the factory recommended maintenance. Star Auto Service is the place. Their customer service is impeccable. Joe is outstanding, honest, and upfront with his quotes and service. Despite being very busy, you don't get the feeling that your car is being rushed through. They definitely do their jobs right. Star Auto's pricing is VERY reasonable, and their mechanics are technically knowledgeable. For those looking for a more technical review, read on: As an example, I recently brought my BMW 135i in to have them diagnose a complex problem, the very common, but expensive to fix, turbo issue (low boost 30FF code). Many places would read the code and simply jump to the turbo as the problem. Ouch on the wallet! As an enthusiast, I know that there are MANY other things to check before going to the expensive option of turbo replacement. Star Auto did just that. After inspecting the vacuum lines, they started with a boost leak check to ensure the vacuum is good. Passing that, they then swapped the turbo solenoids to ensure that's not the issue. Passing that, they even went as far to inspect the ECU wiring. Everything checked out. Unfortunately for me, it looks like it's the turbo after all. But how many mechanics do you know would go through all that trouble (4+ hrs of diagnostics) for you? Finally, and most impressively, there was no pressure from them to fix the turbo because the car drives just fine otherwise. They were ok with me waiting till I've saved enough to have it replaced later. Wow!! And that's why Star Auto receives 5 stars. read more

Hello This guy's are the reason why I decided to create a yelp account. Well it's being a while now since I got my 04 BMW M3 E46 work on by this guy's however they did a great job. Originally I took my car to get a set of paddles as well as new door handle put on. Pricing was very seasonable since I got all the parts I just wanted someone to put them on for me. The guy that worked on my car even let me get in there with him and help out which made my experience very fun as he made me a part of it. Joe represents the type of mechanic / business owner that you want to have on your side. I learned he has lots of experience including his early days working at dealership service centers. I have an older Audi A4 that has needed plenty of mechanical TLC. It sprang plenty of slow oil leaks that needed to be addressed. Joe and his team did their best to locate the sources of the leaks and replaced several items. It worked for a couple of months, but there were more leaks to be addressed. Joe took the car in and addressed the rest of the leaks at no cost. He's an honorable, easy-going guy who is not looking to take advantage of a situation. I would not recommend taking your car here. I went to get my ignition lock replaced and was told that the part cost $192 because they only replace with original dealer parts. My normal mechanic told me that this typically only cost in the $50-60 range and the lock cylinder that was put in my car was aftermarket. read more

i'm loyal to european cars & with luxury cars comes luxury upkeep....for years & years i have taken my cars to the dealership because i didn't trust smaller auto places to take care of my needs. sure dealerships rip you off but at least you can complain to a higher authority if you are unhappy with something. but do they really need to charge you $250 to get the wheels on your 3 series bmw rotated? seriously? a friend recommended that i go see joe @ star auto because i was complaining about how much i paid just to get the tires rotated on my bmw. to be quite honest, i was a bit skeptical about the appearance of the place when i pulled up but after having my car serviced there, i realized that these people know what they are doing, do it well, are very professional. they don't waste a ton of money on a fru-fru lounge area and/or starbucks coffee machine so that's why they don't have to steal your money to make a profit. i'm done paying for the "service advisors" cute polo shirts & fancy bmw notepads. star auto all the way people! read more

Star Auto Service is a place that works on luxury cars, I took my car here on recommendation from my brother who has a luxury car. I must say I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of work that was preformed on my vehicle, which by the way is no luxury car. I had major problems with my car and and for most people it wouldn't have been beneficial to have it repaired, but with the work that was done and the price I was given, it was well worth it. Just with the work that was done, (not to mention replacing things that needed it and I didn't know they needed replacing and not getting charged for it!) I am able to get at least another 3 to 4 years of use out of the car. If you are in San Jose and have a luxury car, take to Star Auto Service and make sure you see Khit, Joe any other qualified mechanic and you will not be disappointed! read more

I called in requesting help for the THIRD time. Talked to Joe again and he helped me with SRS light, ESP module that is fried, and both my ABC valve block. This time I had an alternator problem. I was quoted 480 for the parts, another shop quoted me 690, and the dealership (Beshoff Motors) quoted nearly 1k for everything without labors, which for something like this can be 400+. (Short Version) This review ended up being long, so for anyone that doesn't want to bother reading through it, let me simply say that I have 100% confidence in this business and feel very fortunate to have been referred to them. They've done great work on my car, I trust everything that they say, I've walked out of there paying less than I thought I would need to each time I've been there, and they're really friendly and awesome to work with. It's such a weight off my mind to know that when I have a problem with my car, it will be in great hands at Star. Also, I live in San Francisco - it's well worth the drive (or tow) to have Star work on my car. (Long Version) I was referred to Star Auto earlier this year by a friend, and my experiences with them have been excellent. I'm on my third Mercedes now, and the mechanic that I used to use moved out of the area in 2015, so I had to start from scratch with finding a new mechanic. I know nothing about cars - I never learned how to change my own oil, etc., and the one time I rolled the dice on a mechanic to replace my breaks, I walked away wondering if I had been fleeced when I was talked into approving and paying for other repairs that were discovered during that visit - to the tune of approx. $1k. Maybe I was and maybe wasn't - I simply have no idea. I've now been to Star on two occasions: - The Terrible Squeaking Noise Situation - When I was initially referred, my car was making a terrible squeaking noise which emanated from my front end every time I drove on uneven road or hit a small bump, etc. Thinking that it could be related to my suspension, I first I went to where I bought my tires - I needed them rotated anyways. They said they identified the problem, and gave me a quote that was approx. $800 (from memory) with parts and labor. At that point, on my friend's referral, I went to Star. I described the problem and showed them the quote. First, they told me that while all of the work that I had been quoted could be done on the car, only one thing was actually causing the noise, and that the other thing wasn't necessary to work on to fix the problem. My bill was only approx. $200 (again, from memory). But it could have been even less - on their recommendation, I had (whatever it was that was broken, can't remember the name of the part) the part replaced on both sides, even though only one was causing the noise. But Joe stressed that if I was only concerned about the noise, I only needed to replace one on the left side, which would have been cheaper. Anyhow, problem totally resolved. - The Jacked Transmission Situation - I just picked my car up today from my 2nd Star visit. Last weekend, my car became stuck in 1st or second gear. I called Joe at Star, and arranged to have my car towed to his shop. (BTW, as it turns out, he correctly diagnosed the problem on the phone before I even towed the car to him). It turns out that the problem I experienced with my 2007 E350 is, unfortunately, quite common for the year and make of my car. One forum that I was on said, "Having to replace the valve body will cost between $2,000 and $3,000." Joe only charged my $1,500 plus tax. If you need a Mechanic for your Mercedes (I've seen other brands of cars there too), do yourself a favor and make an appointment with these guys. read more

I was introduced to Tommy by my dad who has had his Mercedes worked on by them for several years. I had a check engine light and an engine idling issue on my 2009 Mini Cooper S. Tommy reassured me that he can fix the issue and he did a great job! Gave me updates daily on the progress, he found that the PCV valve was broken and that my valve cover was also warped, he replaced all that within a day. When I came to pick up the car, he showed me all the old parts that were replaced and went through the entire car to make sure I didn't need any other maintenance.
