I read bad reviews but gave them the benefit of a doubt and decided to go. I purchase a dozen bagels and a small cream cheese. 2 - salt 4 - plain 2 - everything (most places put them in separate bag) 4 - Asiago I did not pay attention to what I was charged until I saw the notification from my credit card when I got home. $28.06. I felt that was a very excessive amount. I called and was told that they have posted that Asiago bagels are $1.25 extra. I opened my first restaurant 33 years ago. This place was great 20 years ago. They keep getting a little worse. I got some poppyseed and sesame bages and they just did not taste right. It seemed like the dough was salty or had someing wrong with it. The bagels seemed to rise a bit more than usual and there was not wuite enough browning to provide the right level of chew in the crust and that deep flavor. 20 years ago this place was amazing with about 20 varieties of bagels and a full menu including sandwiches. Now it's on its 10th or 12th owner and sells about 4 varieties of low quality bagels that are poorly formed and have no hole in the middle. Also, the place is filthy. I never go to Elaine's bagel after passing by the window and seeing all the bugs along the windowsill. My husband who used to love Elaine's circa 1999, thought he'd try it today. Thank you lady working at Elaine's for supporting my long time decision of traveling farther than Berkley for better service and quality. 1. Only half the bagel options were in stock. 2. The lady stayed on a personal phone call while my husband and son looked at her waiting for service. 3. The lady huffed and puffed as my husband told her the order. 4. Then took his money, tossed the change on the counter, picked up the phone which she never hung up, and proceeded to talk about my husband on the phone. I will tell everyone about this experience. With Panera coming soon, I'll be able to get bagels, good service, and only go a bit further. Competition is fierce out there. Small businesses can't afford to lose customers because their staff is unprofessional and offensive. read more

Elaine's has been the "go to" place to buy bagels in the Berkley area for as long as it's doors have been open. The bagels are DELICIOUS.....a great mix of perfectly baked outside and soft chewy inside. The variety is amazing and none of the flavors disappoint. As for Jess who gave a one star review: You failed to state that you work and/or own the business directly across the street but instead of parking in front of your own business, you hog the spot in front of Elaine's blocking HER business for customers who have difficulty walking. What a mature way to "complain", writing a nasty review of this wonderful establishment. One can only hope Karma is real for you, Jess. Elaine was truly upset with your negative review as she asked you NICELY after your repeated ALL DAY parking (9-5) in front of her bagel shop. Some people are just nasty and hateful. I've been looking for just a decent salt bagel for years and I finally went to Elaine's and was so excited to see they not only had regular salt bagels but also the salt bagel sticks and they were better than decent! Our PTO has decided to provide bagels to the children and parents prior to school once a week. After speaking with Elaine's Bagels - who currently provide the bagels for another local school - we had made arrangements to have the bagels delivered, pre-cut prior to 6am. This Wednesday, with numerous children and parents waiting for bagels for the kid's breakfast Elaine's bagels did not show up until 7:45am. The person we were speaking with lied about the fact that a driver was on their way. We were told the driver was "stuck in traffic" around 7am and that they would be there in approximately "15 minutes" and yet did not show up for another 45 minutes!!! In addition to this the bagels they delivered were not pre-cut and Elaine's was unwilling to even apologize for their terrible service. The bagels tasted fine but I would definitely NOT recommend anyone who cares about customer service to use them - especially if you need the bagels for an important meeting or gathering. read more

Elaine is nothing fancy, but it near the house. Unfortunately it changed a great deal over the years. Gone are the great special bagels they used to have on a weekly basis (sun dried tomato was great) and the staff isn't nearly as friendly and don't seem to care much. That all said, their coffee is decent, their breakfast sandwiches are pretty good and the must treat the Berkley school district pretty well because they get a weekly order. My husband went in to purchase bagels and when he went to check out he places cream cheese in the counter. The rude girl said what cream cheese so you have in you hoodie pocket? He said no cheese cheese and pulled out kleenex and his keys. She said nothing and handed him his bagels! She accused him of stealing cream cheese! So this was my first visit here and I arrived nice and early at 7am looking for some fresh bagels. I prefer smaller mom & pop shops over the larger chains as the quality is usually better and you support local businesses. The good: It looks like they make their own cream cheese spreads. I got Onion, Plain and Honey. All were delicious. Price point for a dozen bagels is under $9 so that is outstanding. The not-so-good: The bagels. Yup, the main product. I bought 2 dozen for the office and I had a raisin bagel. Myself and other coworkers found the bagels to be dense and chewy. My jaw actually hurt after eating one. It is really not great... I ordered a latte and she filled the cup with brewed coffee, steamed the milk and added the milk to the brewed coffee. Bagel was toasted but still cold. Give three stars only because I enjoy the bagels, but the staff is very rude! When I come in I don't feel welcomed and I'm never greeted. When paying for my bagels, my card declined due to a error with their cash register. The woman told me "my card declined and that I don't have any money on my card" I felt that was super rude! when I told her to try my card again, the cash register processed my transaction and the employee walked away not even apologizing for the statement she made. I used to eat here in High School. It involved running from class to beat the lunch crowd, not beating the lunch crowd, eating a very messy veggie sandwich while running back to class, and ending up with honey mustard all over the place. It isn't a bad place, and the sandwiches are fine, but the bagels (which is the most important thing here) are way too big and doughy. I guess you get a lot for your dollar in one sense, but they are just too much. New York Bagel sets the standard for bagels around here. But if you are in the area and craving some carbs, Elaine's will do. read more

Seriously, Elaine's? What happened? I used to go here as a little kid, getting dropped off by my mom for bagels and hot cocoa before school as my sister and I toddeled our way down the street, fat and happy from our breakfast. Over the last several years I've noticed the place get dirtier and dirtier and today they were selling Daisy Brand baked goods. For those of you that don't know, that's the half-baked crap they sell in gas stations. My server not only asked for my order three times and the subsequently screwed it up, she yelled at me for not catching her mistake sooner. And if you feel that it's anything less than a felony to charge 1$ for cream cheese, please gimme a little more than a dollop, sweetheart. Definitely NEVER going back. read more
