I had a wonderful experience at this bakery. I picked up the Asiago bread and garlic bread, along with a carrot muffin and an apple muffin, and everything was absolutely delicious. The breads were flavorful and perfectly baked, and the muffins were moist and fresh with just the right amount of sweetness. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind, making the visit even more enjoyable. You can really tell they take pride in both their products and their customer service. We have driven past the Great Harvest Bread Company for years, and even had coupons that I carried around in the car until they expired. Today we were once again driving by with an unexpired coupon for a Buy One Loaf and Get One Free and decided to stop in to check out what they had on their shelves. We felt welcomed with a friendly greeting and they proceeded to feed us some samples of the breads and other baked goods. The problem for us was that everything was fresh and tasty and we could only choose a couple of things to take home. In the end we decided on a loaf of the Michigan Cherry Walnut Bread and a loaf of the Nine Grain Bread which we then had them sliced for us; regular for the Michigan Cherry Walnut and Texas Toast style for the Nine Grain. When we arrived home we immediately dove into the Michigan Cherry Walnut Bread and quickly devoured half of the loaf; it was so fresh and so soft and so delicious that it didn't even need butter! Since my kitchen is out of commission with the exception of the refrigerator(water leak), I decided sandwiches were on deck. Thus the need for great bread so I hopped on Yelp and found this bakery. They have a monthly selection of bread ( baked daily). I missed out on the sourdough (all sold out) and got the wheat bread (my attempt to have a healthier sandwich). I also added two cookies (oatmeal raisin (for a friend) and oatmeal chocolate chip (for me)). The cookie was tasty. Once I got home I made my sandwich and it was worth the trip. I love that they offer it whole or they'll slice it for you. I haven't ventured into the other breads yet, but they have quite the variety. I love this fabulous and delicious bake shop! When I come into town, I love popping into get a sandwich and a brownie. Everyone that works here is kind and helpful. They do traditional loaves and specialty seasonal and holiday flavours, and I have yet to find one that failed to hit the spot. Black Irish soda bread for Saint Patrick's Day is just the thing to go with a hearty stew. The decadent pesto cheese loaf makes the perfect pairing for al fresco Italian dining. Honey wheat is an all the time treat, and Great Harvest would make a convert out of Cookie Monster for his new favourite snack. If we had one in Ferndale, I would roll in there every morning and come away clutching my prized loaf like the crown jewels of the Netherlands. Loaves range from $4 to $8, including free slicing with every purchase. Take advantage of the time to glance through the pastry case and ogle the giant rice krispie squares, tarts, and selection of muffins and dessert bars. My secret weakness, enhanced by intense cravings and hunger, are the cheese sticks. Just one won't satisfy you, and unlike Lay's potato chips, the consequences for eating several include a long nap and groans of satisfaction. Great Harvest Bread is one of those places that makes moving to a new town feel like home. Although it's a chain, each GHB I've ever been to has a small-town feel about it. I've been to their bakeries in Bozeman, Montana, East Lansing, and Burlington, Vermont. Great Harvest makes the best honey wheat bread I have ever tasted. And it's good no matter the location you visit. The breads are made from whole grains and simple ingredients in an earnest, wholesome, low-tech way. The resulting loaves are superbly dense, filling, and full of amazing flavor that is downright delectable when toasted and buttered with real cow's milk butter. Although I often use it to make sandwiches at home, I love taking the honey wheat bread, which I get thick sliced, and using it to make French Toast, or to grill it and brush it with a mix of organic honey, real butter, and a dash of orange zest. It makes for an amazing snack with some fresh fruit. Their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are also amazing stuff. The employees at this Birmingham location are incredibly sweet, and the bakery has a lovely open floor plan so you can see the whole bakery. Be sure to ask for a sample of any of their breads in display with a large tub of real butter. And for those hygiene freaks among you ... the whole place is sparkling clean. I'd eat off the floor. I LOVE Birmingham Great Harvest! Every bread I've tried has been incredible. The other baked items (cookies, muffins, cake,) are equally delicious. I've never had a bad bite! The lunch sandwiches are also fantastic - everyone should try out Great Harvest for lunch. In addition to healthy, wholesome, delicious products, the owners and employees are amazing people. Stopped in to have a sandwich and I was a bit disappointed. Typically I love the multigrain bread but this time it was definitely not fresh. ummmm....how can I be the first person to review this place? Have you been there? It's a utopia of fresh baked bread, hippies, the most scrumptious muffins and magical morsels called "Savannah Bars". There are always samples of the breads they make daily (there are the basics they make daily but special ones too), every person working there wears their tie-dyed shirts and yoga pants well while maintaining a laid-back, friendly approach to helping you pick the perfect loaf of bread. They also offer me a dog treat every time they spy our crazy puppy waiting for us in the car. I should also mention that this particular GHBC is located next to a bagel place that makes excellent bagels but some of the worst baked goods I have ever had. I don't know if that makes their oat bran muffins with fresh blueberries in them 1000% better, but it can't hurt. So the bread is amazing, the service is great but why do I really go there? These amazing gifts from above called "Savannah Bars". You have a crumbly brown-sugary platform for tart raspberries, peaches and other fresh fruit that's been baked on top. They are simply AMAZING every time. Whatever bread you are eating, it is woefully inadequate compared to what they're making. Skip the grocery store next time and pop in to the Great Harvest Bread Company (and grab a Savannah bar if there's one left!). (P.S. I can't say enough great things about Great Harvest Bread Co in Birmingham. This is a family owned and run business and it shows because the level of care given to the art of making delicious and wholesome bread and food, and to their customers too is something you only see in business owners who care, and have young children of their own. I have friends who travel from Macomb to the Birmingham location because they say it's the best. I agree. There are family owned recipes only found at the Birmingham location. The staff are always friendly and willing to offer generous samples. I LOVE their pumpkin chocolate chip bread (seasonal) and their zucchini loaf. Their cinnamon swirl is also awesome and makes for fantastic French toast on the weekends. Both my kids have also been to field trips at GHBC and I cannot express enough how impressed I was by owner Tina's enthusiasm and wit. She had the children enthralled and the parents laughing. Finally, I'm disappointed to see a review complaining about the long line... Doesn't that mean the bread is great!!?! I'd rather wait and get great bread than rush in for substandard product! I did the Veggie on white because it was the only vegan option available for sandwich but you can buy a different loaf and have them use that bread. Great breads and muffins. They have little bits of the day's special on the front counter to entice you and it truly does entice. I only make it out there about once a month but I always buy more than I can reasonably use (the spinach feta bread is yummy!) but I discovered that they keep well in the fridge. Currently, I've got the Cinnamon Swirl and Cheddar Garlic in there though the Cinnamon Swirl won't be there much longer. By the way, they slice the bread for free. read more

I've never before been this excited about bread! I work across the street from here and a co-worker and I usually go for daily bread runs. I never thought that regular ass bread could be so delicious! The staff is friendly and if you ask them what's in the bread you're eating they know it exactly. This morning I received a warm welcome and then (even better!) a full slice of warm bread with lots of real butter. Orange Cranberry..fabulous! No teeny tiny bite to sample: A full, fresh-cut slice. With butter, in case you missed it the first time My peach muffin was tasty and the tuna sandwich was so nicely wrapped that it was still yummy 7 hours after purchase.
