Really good bagel with a generous amount of cream cheese and lox. I was so big, it was almost hard to eat - but delicious.

Good food is found at Jay Birds Bar & Grille located in Lathrup Village! So much so I dined here twice in one month with two different parties. Ironically, Brianna was our server both times. It's time to give her a raise for her hard work in serving. I had the catfish fillets, green beans and garlic mashed potatoes on my first visit and fried chicken wings and fries on the second visit. The food was well prepared with portions for sharing or a second meal at home. Note: Due to their limited seating, there is a 90-minute seating limit during busy times. Seating includes bar seating, pub tables and booth. Seating is not ideal for parties larger than 4. On my second visit, we had a party of 7 that we settled for two booths.

Until someone at the table next to us lit a joint, we truly enjoyed the outdoor space. My brother, however, warned me that the food was just meh and I find I will have to agree with him. The protein/meats were good. My problem was with the sides. I got the rice pilaf and green beans and I feel like it was false advertisement. The rice pilaf was just yellow rice. The green beans were canned, although the menu pic showed fresh. Both of them lacked flare or seasoning. I noticed the person we ate with ate all of his catfish but barely touched his sides (potatoes au gratin and corn) as well. Now my husband got the mashed potatoes and brussels. He raved about them. I grabbed a little of both to take home so hoping when I eat them for lunch tomorrow I'm as impressed with those as he was. Maybe they are the show stoppers?!? So the final factor is always whether or not it would return and I will say yes, there were several cocktails on the menu I really want to try. And it is conveniently located. I will try what our server recommended, the wings, and just keep it there.

First is that it has a big menu, which I don't always feel is a good thing as it risks not really specializing in one area. Well, I was proven wrong. The 'big apple' is a signature dish and one that comes up on many searches, so I went with it. From a regular pic, it might not jump out to you and you may think it's almost like an apple fritter (though nothing wrong with that), but it's so much more. It's almost difficult to describe. It seems like it was cooked in it's own unique bowl-shaped pan since it's crispy all around, including the edges that lift a couple inches. It's surprisingly light, almost like a light, airy crepe. Maybe even a bit like a Yorkshire pudding. Of course, it's sweet and the apple aspect of it was also better than I expected. Almost certainly real apples roasted in house added with cinnamon sugar and not just something prefabricated from a bag and warmed. We had a huge group of three families and everyone loved what they had. The pancakes were a huge hit and were true butter milk pancakes. Those, and many other things, tasted as though made with real butter. My daughter loved her crepes. The friend with me was really impressed with his omelet. It goes on. Another friend had never had potato pancakes before (such as latkes) and loved them here. So yeah, this place was a massive hit for me and about 15 others I was with. Will be back for sure.

I was dining alone, and what could have felt unusually quiet instead created a calm, relaxed atmosphere. I enjoyed the peaceful ambience and the opportunity to take in my surroundings without the usual rush of a busy dining room. The attentive service made the experience feel almost as though I were being personally catered to, and I walked out feeling very satisfied. One of the reasons I continue to be drawn to this restaurant is the Michigan salad. I especially appreciate that it is never made with iceberg lettuce, which gives the salad more character, freshness, and nutritional value. The salad itself was beautifully presented and very satisfying. My waitress was accommodating and attentive, never making my request feel like an inconvenience. Between the freshness of the greens, the combination of flavors, and the care shown by the staff, I thoroughly enjoyed every bite. By the time I finished, there truly was not a drop left. Dining alone gave me the chance to slow down and fully enjoy the meal, and the entire experience reminded me why this is a restaurant I enjoy returning to.

I was really disappointed with my recent takeout order from Red Olive in Southfield. I ordered two…read moresalads and two hamburger patties (plain, no bun or toppings). I expected to pay the same $4.79 to $5 add-on price that I have seen for other proteins like chicken or gyro meat in the past. Instead, they charged me the full $9.49 price for the complete hamburger sandwich for each patty. When I called to politely point out the mistake and ask if they could adjust it (since I did not receive buns, cheese, veggies, or anything else that comes with the sandwich), they flat-out refused to correct the charge. The staff was unhelpful and basically said that is how it is rung up with no exceptions. The salads were fine (fresh as usual), but paying almost double for just plain patties feels like straight-up overcharging. I have eaten here before and liked the food, but this pricing confusion and lack of willingness to fix a clear error left a bad taste. I will not be rushing back, and I will definitely double-check the receipt next time (if there is a next time). Save yourself the hassle and maybe go somewhere else for simple add-ons.

Located on a mall, there was plenty of complimentary parking spaces, a real plus in Royal Oak! The interior was sizable and quite cavernous. As it filled with diners, it got more and more difficult to hear members of our party. That said, it was sunlit bright and very clean. Our server, Anayla was absolutely the BEST: pleasant, patient, efficient and in the end..., provided separate checks! Though i only drank water (served without ice - Euro Style), my party ordered coffee and hot tea. Anayla must've known they would be draining their mugs over and over. Within minutes she returned with thermal pots for the pouring! I ordered the Smoked Salmon Fritata with a small arugula salad accompaniment. The salad was excellent - fresh and tasty. The frittata was nicely plated, with a dollop of sour cream in the middle. It a bit bland tasting to my palate. Payment is accepted via cash, credit or QR Code. All worked well for our group. Restroom was clean and stocked. I would definitely consider returning to First Watch again.

Other than that, the service and food were great. I go two of the summer specials and was satisfied with both. Very generous fruit bowl. So yes, I would go again.
