Came in looking for a simple vegan option. The guy behind the counter was really behind the counter as we rang the bell several times to get service. Ended up with a Hummus sandwich. I am pretty lazy and even I know that spreading hummus on bread is the easy way out. Not really a deli feel to the location either. Walking in, you are surrounded by overpriced Sharpie art. Really. I haven't even had the sandwiches yet, because this review couldn't wait, so this is based solely on service from a guy who has been in customer service/restaurants for many years. 1. When someone calls in a to go order, get a name. Then, don't act annoyed when the person has to describe their to go order to you. Also, a simple greeting when someone calls/a please or thank you, wouldn't hurt either. 2. Don't wear flip flops when preparing/serving food. Not just gross, but also a health violation 3. If you don't feel like smiling, that's one thing but spinning the pay screen around like some immature disgruntled teenage is just stupid. OK, I have to admit that walking in I was a bit skeptical about this place. It was pretty much empty except for these two old men griping about Obamacare but I ordered a half sweet potato and avocado sandwich and a half Cuban to have tomorrow. The mixture between sweet potatoes and the honey mustard sauce is amazing! The price is pretty cheap considering how much you get. Stumbled across this little discreet treasure while shopping in Benson. At first I thought it was a record store. Then I saw the word "deli", and thought - "interesting". Stepped inside and the aroma of toasting bread swept me off my feet. Carried me past the local artists work straight to the menu on the wall. Diverse flair on the deli sandwich and boy was it DELICIOUS!!! A lone young woman was slaving away at the assembly counter - bless her heart. The food was fresh, hot, and well priced. This is an awesome lunch spot if you are anywhere near Benson at lunch! Or dinner or late night... I took my co-worker here after reading Giggy and Will S' reviews and getting hungry. I was shocked by the great smell when we walked in and the prices are MORE than reasonable. Service was good and the menu is high quality and inventive. I took one star off because my carnitas sandwich could have used a little more seasoning, but for the same price as the chains and twice as good, it is the place to be for sandwiches! My suggestion to the Star Deli owners: Raise your prices. Your stuff is more than good enough for an even $5 for a half. Thanks for a tasty lunch and I will definitely be back! read more

This is my favorite sandwich place in Omaha, hands down. I first got a taste (get it) of this awesome place after a late night out. I thought that maybe I loved it so much because it was 1am, I had consumed several drinks, and what ISN"T good at that time?! But no, for real. It was amazing. Since then, I've gone back five or six times to pick up lunch, dinner, and late night bites. My go-to is the Turkey Pesto on white Italian bread. The turkey meat they use is thick and tastes like it was freshly sliced. Topped with melted cheese and creamy pesto, it's a big sandwich. They toast it and the result is mouthwatering deliciousness. A half order is definitely filling, but go for the large and you can save some for later. Or eat it then and be extra happy. Seriously. Go here. read more

There is so much to say about this place! Every sandwich is amazing-made fresh to order and great ingredients and flavor combinations. While you eat you can also enjoy local art and hear some tunes! Hot diggity, my new favorite sandwich place is right across from my new favorite pizza place. Star Deli doesn't skimp with their ingredients and it's obvious that their commitment to local ingredients pays off. Just using spring greens instead of regular iceberg puts their sandwiches a notch above chain-runoff like Subway and Jimmy Johns. The service can be a tad slow as it's usually just one guy by himself so fiddle with your smartphone or something but the wait is always worth it and the prices are fair. I called ahead for my take-out order because I've read the reviews, but still ended up waiting about 10 minutes for my two sandwiches. The bright interior and artwork on the walls gave me something to look at while I waited. The woman who took my order was super welcoming and it honestly looked like she was doing all the expo (wrapping up sandwiches, bagging orders, taking phone orders) and that was the cause for delay. I have previously called for delivery and been turned down due to their not being enough staff. I think that's the root of the waiting issue--not a lack of initiative but a lack of bodies. Had the french dip on the baguette, which was soft, chewy, and packed with meat; the cubano was equally good. There was some housemade baked goods that looked like they'd make for tasty desserts. Because the location is in Benson, parking can be tough, so be prepared for a walk! read more

Last time I went in there I waited 20 minutes without even as much as an acknowledgment. The place was empty and three people were standing in line. Mind you this was after I'd already ordered once and tried to pay, but the counter guy said he couldn't break a fifty at five in the evening so I had to walk across the street and break the bill. I'm a local and quite frankly they won't get my business again if I'm not important enough for you to stop slicing tomatoes or smoking a joint in the back to take my order, then I'm not coming back. read more

I was on my way to my usual Benson eatery, Baxter's, and I just happened to park in front of Star Deli. I had no idea that it was there but being the person that I am, I decided to check out the Yelp reviews. As you can see, they were great, and a sandwich felt like it would hit the spot. So, sorry, Baxter's and your oh-so-delicious tater tots, maybe next time. I ordered the Long Beach club on baguette. It took a few minutes which gave me some time to peruse the art work on the walls. After 5-10 minutes later, I was off with my sandwich in hand. My first thought was that I should have ordered a half because it was huge. My second thought was that it looked delicious. And delicious it was. The smoked turkey, bacon, cucumber, avocado and everything else made for a great sandwich. I must say, it's a deli that I've always walked past and written off. Benson has a lot of great restaurants so I never felt the urge to stop by a deli. With that being said, I tried star deli for the first time today and was incredibly impressed by my sandwich. I got a half order of the "stampede" which includes roast beef, the red onions, greens, cheddar cheese, and "horsey mayo" incased in a nice toasted wheat bread. I don't know if it was the rain or if I was just really hungry, but I found this sandwich plus a Coke Zero combo pretty damn satisfying. Environment--a little empty at 1:30, but the experience of being surrounded by urban artwork while sitting on retro-ish furniture and eating a sandwich is kind of cool. Overall, good place for lunch. It doesn't look inviting at first but ended up being a good place for lunch. I look forward to trying their other sandwiches as well. read more

By far the worst roast beef (French dip) sandwich I've ever had. The meat was grey and tough -- and inexplicably thick-cut. If you have tough meat, don't cut it thick! Every bite I took, a giant slab of tough, grey meat would fall out of the bun, still attached to my mouth. I gave up after three or four bites. Terrible. I went to tell the clerk, but nobody was to be found behind the counter. I rang the bell; nothing. Then I walked outside. I found a guy standing there, SMOKING. He wasn't the clerk I had ordered from, but I asked if he worked there. He said yes. I told him it was the worst sandwich I've ever had (which was no exaggeration). He said nothing. I told him that they need to slice the meat thinner if they're going to use such tough meat. Again, nothing. I walked away. Didn't even ask for my money back. No interest in ever setting foot near this place again. You should follow suit and never go there. read more

Got the Long Beach, BBQ chips and a Diet Coke here on my first visit. My friend and I decided to venture away from where we normally go to lunch, and we were thoroughly impressed! My friend got the French onion soup as a side, and said it was spicy... But it didn't bother me! I would stick with a sandwich (on French baguette!!!) Customer service was great. Spartan sandwich shop in the growing Benson strip, they offer good sandwiches for a premium price. The actually food was good; meats were seasoned and cooked well, veggies were fresh, bread was good, though a little too thick for my liking. As stated previously, the interior is very basic, with artsy paints and prints adorning the bare white walls. The whole set up of the dining area was interesting and occupied by older pieces of diner furniture. The server was nice and helpful, but was alone. So, she was handling both the cashier and making the sandwiches. The shop was not overly busy on my visit, but the sandwiches took quite a while to come out 15-ish minutes. Maybe I am impatient and should be willing to wait for good things, but that was a little long for me. Add another person in back and problem solved. A friend and I are taking a pottery class in Benson, so are trying out various places for dinner in the area before going to class at 6:00. Last night was my night to pick where we'd meet to eat, and I chose Star Deli after reading some rave reviews on Yelp. We got there a little after 5 p.m. There's a lot of interesting art on the walls, and since the guy who was working was busy making someone else's sandwich, we got a chance to look the art over. After a few minutes, he was ready to take our order. My friend ordered the Muffaletta and I got the Cuban, both on the baguette (you have choice of three different breads, whole or 1/2 sandwich). So there are complaints about how long it takes to get your food. It's not "freaky fast" (there was only one guy working, and he not only worked the counter, but made the food), but it didn't take all that long. Plus, you have art to look at while you're waiting! And the "wait" is well worth it...these were not chain sandwiches, nor did they taste like they'd come off a production line. We both ordered whole sandwiches, and could only eat 1/2 (saved the other half for lunch!) My Cuban was hot, fresh, full of flavor, and just plain delicious. My friend equally enjoyed her Muffaletta. Get it to go, or sit at one of the tables (not a lot of seating room, and it's nothing fancy, but very sufficient) or at the counter overlooking the street. For around $10, a whole sandwich plus a drink (can or bottles - soda, juice or water are available) was a fantastic deal. And I have that other half to look forward to for lunch today.... read more

Five stars goes to the most wonderful food spot in all of Benson. I don't know when I found this amazing shop, but I have for sure been going here over two years. The Rachel, Long Beach Club and the Muffuletta are my favorite sandwiches to get there. Sometimes I get the half, sometimes I get a whole, however I always get it on the Baguette. The baguette is the perfect crunch that I have been looking for on every sandwich in life. Bravo, Star Deli, bravo. They always have the best customer service when I am there, even though it might take a few extra minutes than other sandwich shops, this place does it right so it is worth it. When you are there waiting for your sandwich, you can walk around and look at the local art that is for sale on the walls (that is what I do anyway). I can't recommend this place enough. Star Deli has the most delicious soups I have ever had! Tried a butternut squash curry soup and it was the most harmonious blend of flavors I'd never have thought to try. I've had several of the sandwiches and not been disappointed in any though the sweet potato one on flatbread is my main go to, paired with whatever amazing soup I am lucky enough to be blessed with that day. The art on the walls (which is local and available for purchase) is always changing so you can browse while you're food is being made for you. Happy eating! read more

Nope nope and nope. My sandwich had "bits and flakes" of turkey instead nice slices. Where was my cheese? Where was my bacon? No taste. It tasted kinda funny actually. I only ate half of it. Too bad because the sandwiches SOUND awesome and they support and sell local artists' stuff. I've tried this place over and over WANTING it to be so good and, well, it just isn't. There aren't a lot of places to eat lunch in Benson either. It's a shame. read more

Two of my friends and I met here on a stormy, wet night before attending another outstanding Sunday Roadhouse concert at The Waiting Room around the corner. At 7:00 PM we were the only people in the place. After a friendly greeting and some explanation from the young man behind the counter (for some reason I thought this business shared more than a former location with Worker's Takeout). What Star and Worker's share beyond that is a very reasonably priced, absolutely world class sandwich experience! I had the half French Dip and if I have ever had a better one I certainly can't tell you where or when. The bread had the perfect crust and texture to stand up to repeated dipping in a perfectly executed au jus. The beef was thinly sliced and wonderfully tender. Perfect in every way, and for 4 bucks it will be on my A list from now on when I find myself in Benson! read more

The food here is DECENT at best but the service makes it not worth your time. I'm not one to base my opinion of a restaurant on one visit, but after three or four failed attempts, it doesn't deserve another shot. I've actually only had the food once because the second time I walked in, I was rudely informed that they were "out of turkey and wouldn't be getting more" and the third time (at lunch on a Friday) was told that my basic deli sandwich would take "at least 30 minutes". HAVE MORE THAN ONE PERSON WORKING! I live minutes from this place so would really like to make it a regular sandwich stop, but I've given it too many chances, and it has failed every time, so I won't be back. read more

Damn good sandwiches! $8 gets you a sandwich the size of a foot long sub but with way better quality ingredients. We tried the French Dip, Pork Carnitas and Don Rocco. Will definitely be going back for more sandwiches in the future. The Don Rocco was rather greasy but that wasn't a complaint of the two guys who ate them. Just a forewarning. read more
