First impression of this place was how pretty the interior space is. I did not expect it to look the way it does from the outside. It's quite a spacious area. It is also FAR cleaner than most nail salons I've been to. I walked in to get my dip powder acrylics off and they did a very thorough job. After all the product melted off, my nails were looking RATCHET but my shellac manicure was amazingly done and I really appreciated my tech's attention to detail. Tri is one of the sweeeeetest people I've ever met and I really enjoyed my conversation with him while I was here. I echo what others have said about the location - not awesome parking and not a particularly distinguished neighborhood, but once inside, Star Nails doesn't disappoint. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon, and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a full set. The lady who did them was efficient and nice, but not overly chatty (a bonus for me). It was ok but the fact that the technician kept changing made me question what was going on. Turns out, only one person knows how to do fills. Having them do my nails, it was aggressive. It felt like they're sanding than just my nail beds. Filing felt like they were going to cut me. Seems like they used the same filing with everyone the fact that it's fully white. Very friendly. Not my best manicure. I had some gel removed and went to regular. She removed with only grinding and then did not buff my nails smooth. Then she only put one layer of clear coat on my French manicure. They felt rough (of course) so I asked for a second coat which has always been a normal step other places. She did without hesitation. The nail tech who worked on my toes gave me an 8 min pedicure for 28$ just so she could go back to the front and sit. Days later, I have an ingrown toenail. Pros: The people working here are for the most part polite and friendly, the location is very convenient for those who live in the area, the interior is surprisingly nice- better than many nail salons in Seattle, and they now have a very extensive selection of polishes and gel colors. There are tons of chairs, so they could potentially have quite a lot of people at the same time, but there are never more than 6 or 7 people working at a time, even on weekends. Cons: It's so hard to make an appointment! When you call, they say "ok", don't take your phone number and when you show up you still have to wait 30+ minutes because they will take anyone who walks in the door before you. The language barrier is tough, that is part of why making appointments is so frustrating. The most important part of a nail salon is cleanliness. I don't know how they sanitize their metal tools, but they do take them out of little sealed bags. I bring my own files and buffers because I know they reuse theirs. I prefer to get my fingers and toes done at the same time and I can't make sure that will happen because of the aforementioned language/appointment issues. I like this place and the owners, it keeps getting better, but still could use some improvement. A block or so from rainier community center. We come inside and immediately are greeted and tended to right away (imagine my surprise ---on a Saturday morning, super busy, yadadada). I seriously take my time picking polish and they are not rushing me at all! Getting to the point--- the pedicure was great!! I had a gentleman and can I just say?? He put in work on these babies!! Scrubbing, massaging, the works! I love it when the techs do what they're supposed to do and clean my cuticles and get in there! The tools were clean and sanitized, PLUS! The chairs were relaxing, PLUS! The place didn't smell, PLUS! AND! They were nice. Not overly excessive with the "where you from?", "what you do?" Questions. Pleasant. The place is actually peaceful with it's decor and ambiance. There was even a TV and QVC was on! I'm a sucker for QVC. Not like that mattered though. Manicure was pretty awesome. Dude knew what he was doing. And I got a great neck massage too! Anyways. For a regular pedicure set me back $23 and a regular manicure $15. All in all it was great! Who doesn't like to get pampered. No up selling of add-ons, tons of happy regulars coming in, and I walked out thinking my nails looked great! I'd come here again, and suggest it to my friends. Heck! I have been going to this business for ten years for one service- eyebrow waxing. Lee is the owner at Star Nails and she is a perfectionist at eyebrow waxing. I have not found anyone in ten years who can give me a guaranteed perfect eyebrow wax every time. Here is the catch. This is a difficult review for me to write due to my history with this business. Star nails is in a low income neighborhood and you are almost certainly going to encounter unpleasant and loud people. Over the last 10 years Lee has upgraded her salon to a very clean and impressive interior design. However, the location hasn't changed and that is tough for me. I have tried the manicure and pedicure services and they are terrible. A young man serviced me and my nails were crooked, uneven and poorly painted. I feel terrible for Lee because she is a hard working business woman and she is really trying to maintain a professional business. Unfortunately, until the location changes I do not believe she will be able to avoid certain distractions that take away from the feeling of being pampered. You did a really good job. I decided to pre-clipped my natural nails at home; I don't trust people with my nail shape. Overall experience was good. This is my first time dealing with an acrylic set, for years I had my entire soul prepared for this moment where I receive a completely transparent, mini almond nail shape. My only complaint is the length of my nails -- my mini almond looks and feels like a mini almond on steroids which I'm not so sure about due to the fact that I currently work inside of warehouse which requires me to use my hands to lift merchandise from area to another ... and to be honest I don't want my nails to bleed. This place is way nicer on the inside, and you will have to look for street parking. I'm searching for a new nail place and this one comes close. The staff was very friendly and I loved the woman who did my pedicure (they use the cheese grater to get calluses off - seriously the best way). They did my pedicure and manicure at the same time which I can see some people appreciating for the sake of time, but I prefer when it's done separately so I can veg out on my phone while getting a pedicure. I was also there with a friend but they did not do the same to her, so that was kind of annoying. I got the gel manicure also and I liked how careful he was when doing it. I still didn't like having it done while I was in the chair; he had to keep moving the nail dryer back and forth, which was just slightly annoying as it's supposed to be a relaxing experience. I felt like I had to help coordinate what he was doing in the small space of the pedi chair. I had an appointment scheduled for 9:30 a.m., but the owner (cigarette lit in mouth!) did not show up to unlock the doors until 9:50 a.m. To her credit, the employee was sitting there waiting for him on time. When I walked in, there was a soaked towel on the floor near the water cooler. At that point, I should have bailed. The worst part was that THIS SALON DOES NOT AUTOCLAVE ITS INSTRUMENTS. I don't know if this is even legal in Washington, but it is certainly disgusting. Their "sanitation" involves spraying the nail instruments with alcohol, leaving it on for 4 seconds, then wiping it off. The manicurist sometimes did this, sometimes not. The apex of my pedicure was that I wanted custom nail art -- a skull in particular. The manicurist started screaming at me that "It is not Halloween time!" but did it anyway. It looks awful, and she offered to take it off for me, but I didn't have the heart to have her remove it. Besides, at that point I was just eager to leave. This place seriously gave me the creeps. I came here the day before my wedding with one of my bridesmaids and the flower girl (her daughter). We were all getting manicures and pedicures and had such a good experience. We made an appointment ahead of time, and when we arrived there were more than enough people working; I don't know if that's because we made an appointment or because they're always well-staffed, but it was great. We didn't have to wait at all and our nails were done at the same time, rather than us having to go separately. They were also great with the flower girl and thought she was adorable; one of the women working even took a selfie with her. As we were getting ready to leave, the aforementioned flower girl accidentally stepped on my foot, smudging my pedicure, and they happily fixed it for me when I asked. Immediately after that, I realized one of my fingernails was needing to be filed or cut because it was a bit sharp (and I'm apparently annoying) and they gladly took care of that, too. They didn't even seem annoyed, which most people probably would have been (I was annoying myself, let's be real). My bridesmaid ended up making a last-minute decision to get her eyebrows waxed, which only cost $12. It looked great and I'd definitely consider coming here for that as well if I ever decide to start getting my brows waxed again. This is a great place! It's the little things that set it apart. For instance, the foot rests on the chairs flip up to prop legs up while the bottom of the feet are being scrubbed. This makes the whole process even more comfortable. I gotta say, I don't think I've ever had a more thorough job done on my toes. She took extra time to assure cleanliness as well. There were lots of chairs here so I didn't feel rushed at all. As a matter of fact, I was in the chair for well over an hour. Went in here the other day with a friend for shellac manicures. We were acknowledged and seated right away (which was nice because we did not make any appointments). Don't let the exterior of the building fool you like it did me - it is huge inside! The interior is incredibly nice and organized, and gives a great relaxing aura. I greatly enjoyed my manicure; the nail tech, Hannah, was precise and took her time and she was extremely friendly. She also gave me a small back/shoulder/arm massage while waiting for the shellac top coat to dry followed by a hand rub and a hot towel. I've tried at least 10 different nail salons within the past year and have have not found "my" nail salon quite yet. I have a very good feeling that this may be the place! Every single one of the staff members is an absolute pleasure. They were incredibly accommodating and personable. I would also pull my hand back because it hurt but instead of stopping he would just continue to rip my acrylic off of my nails. By the time he was done my thumb was bleeding and my nails were all torn up. The girl who cut and filed my nails knew it was bleeding and kept asking me if it hurt because it looked so painful.
