After a long, tiring day, all we craved was something simple with chicken. This was the only place open, so we called and placed an order for pickup. I asked for a recommendation, and the staff member on the phone suggested chicken pakora. I requested something tandoori-style instead, and she suggested the chicken tikka and tandoori chicken, saying it would be ready in 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the food was a letdown. The chicken had a very strong, unpleasant smell, was heavily dyed with artificial coloring, and didn't look or taste appetizing at all. The chicken tikka came in surprisingly small portions, which didn't feel worth the price. Sadly, we couldn't even get through a bite, we ended up throwing the whole thing away! We had ordered based on the great reviews and high ratings, so it's hard to understand what went wrong. Maybe it was an off day, but we left very disappointed. Not likely to return. read more

Star of India is the only Indian restaurant in Athens. It's been here for awhile. They don't usually seem busy even during the school year. Even so they stay in business. With no other competition they know people craving Indian will come here. It has a lunch buffet. It's about $10 which is a pretty decent price. You get all you can eat, and there's a good variety. It also has a regular dinner menu. The buffet is the right time to go though. It's much more cost friendly. The buffet has many of the typical Indian items. You can get some great Indian food here. It also has a location in Marietta. These are the only Indian restaurants in this area, so they have a monopoly on the market but they don't slack, they make real good stuff. read more

This place was great! I was helping my friend moving to Athens that day and we stopped by this place for dinner. The gentleman was awesome! He overheard us talking about a special tea that was not in the menu, and he made some for us. He checked on us and asked if we need more rice, how's the food, was the spicy level okay...The food was fantastic! I finished the whole bowl. I can say this, I was very happy after this dinner. Pretty good Indian restaurant. Honestly haven't had Indian food in a long time before trying this place. I ordered the chicken tikki masala and garlic naan bread. It is a little pricey (over $17). The garlic naan bread was very good and I really liked the sauce for the chicken dish. I got medium spice level which was not too spicy. This is one of my go to places in Athens. The food here is so good and well-worth the price. I particularly love the onion kulcha, makhni chicken, and garlic naan. Seriously, if you're craving naan that's not frozen from Trader Joe's, this is the place. My husband also loves their kheer (rice pudding). We had eaten here once before and enjoyed it. Last week we ate again & everything was fine except for the Kheer. My wife got very sick after eating 3 servings. She had food poisoning all night and most of the next day and was unable to work. DoorDash gave us a measly $20 for it and Star of India never even replied even though I sent them the message in private and out of respect to give them a chance to take care of this situation. I stopped for lunch the day before Christmas and although the restaurant was relatively empty, the man working was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, which comes with rice. It only took about 8 minutes to come, and the presentation was generous and looked delicious. I had the option of mild, medium, or spicy and I had chosen mild/medium. Flavoring was delicious. It looked like the rice had caraway seeds in it, which I had never really had in my rice before. The food at Star of India has really improved this last year. A couple years ago when I first tried this place, it was hit and miss. Average at best. The korma, I remember, had an off-putting Campbell's cream of something taste. But they've come a long way with these recipes! It's now as good as any Indian food you'd find in a big city.
