I decided to visit for lunch while in the neighborhood. And I have to say I was happy to be back. I decided to give a full sampling both because I was hungry and I missed buffets. There were a lot more vegetarian options on there, which were flavorful and spicy. They had a cabbage dish which was lovely The chicken was serviceable and the lamb meatballs were spot on. Awesome lunch buffet. Tons of options from veggie only to chicken to lamb. Plenty of sides like rice and naan as well. Food was well stocked, perfectly spiced and seasoned, and made hot and fresh. I wanted chicken tikka maaala which I guess they only serve certain days but they were so kind and got me some because I asked! Totally not necessary but much appreciated! I was excited to try this place since it's been around in Austin for a while. I got the chicken Tikka masala (spicy), garlic naan, and samosas The chicken tikka masala was OK. It was lacking the bold flavors and it wasn't spicy at all. I've had Indian food in London, Houston, NYC, and I think it missed the mark. It tasted almost like watered down butter chicken. The garlic naan was good and the samosas were good (an order comes with 3). The portions are good too. I got this delivered so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I don't think I'll try this place again. There's a few Indian restaurants in Austin and I think this one falls on the lower end. But if you don't like the bold flavors and want something more mild, maybe you will like this place. read more

Delicious food, small buffet selections however the flavors are there in all the dishes and the people that work there are very welcoming. They also offer food on Too Good To Go! The environment makes you feel like your in India and not Austin no more. My favorite dish is always chicken tandoori or butter chicken! Love a good garlic pita bread too which they do have including a delicious smooth mango lassi/smoothie definitely recommend trying it as they have a special offer for it during summer time as I only been there once... Upon arrival we were immediately greeted and given a table at the window. Early dinner for us, 6:30 and the crowd was light. Our waitperson was highly attentive but demure. We splurged and ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir, I know the markup on restaurant wine is very high but this was a special occasion and I needed it. My son and I decided on the Buffett even though we looked at the menu. Curry, Masala, Tandoori Chicken all plentiful and fresh. Great flavors. They also have plenty of vegetarian options and some Gluten-free. There was no lamb on the Buffett but that was okay for me. Appetizers, Soups, Salad bar too. Along with a small area of desserts to include banana pudding. This was a nice splurge and overall cost of dinner was $80.71 for two. This includes the credit card surcharge. Ugh. Unfortunately I was super hyped to go to this restaurant only to get severely sick. The staff were super friendly and made sure we were well taken care of. The bussers might take your plate if you leave the table! The atmosphere transports you to a different era almost...it's so unique. I tried the fried broccoli, the Chana masala, the samosas (as everyone had suggested), the tikka masala, lamb, and the chicken biryani. It was all delicious! However, I did get very sick immediately after eating. I actually had to skip work to go upchuck at home. I would recommend this place for those with iron stomachs. It have been a while since I had Indian food. Star of India provided a variety of Indian delicacies from tandoori chicken to somosas. They offer a $15.95 all you can eat buffet which includes entrees, salads, soup and desserts. Star of India also offers ala carte choices as well. Some of my favs were the lentil soup, somosas and lamb meatballs. My server was friendly and attentive. In addition, the restaurant manager came by to check on me, which I appreciated. The decor had an arabian feel to it with light, calming colors. There is also an abundance of free parking, The only feedback I will share is that the food could have been better heated. we ordered from Star for 20 people. we had at least 10 different dishes. Everyone raved about how delicious everyone of the dishes were. Our order was neatly placed in a heated cube food warmer. We were able to let the food sit for about 2 hours before we set it out. it was so easy to get it ready to serve. I will definitely order again. read more

Tried the lunch buffet for the first time and it was great. Lots of variety. I have a coconut allergy so I asked what dishes had coconut and the host walked me through the buffet pointing things out and double checked with the chef so that I knew what I could eat. We were a party of 4, a Friday lunch. We were immediately sat and beverages were ordered. We went to browse the buffet to decide if we wanted that or order from the menu. Which we all chose the buffet with many popular selections. Majority of the items were tasty, some were very dry such as the tandoori chicken, and chicken tikka masala, their rice was dry and tasteless. Everything else were decent. Overall, was good. The steam tables did not keep all hot entrees hot, just warm. Coincidentally, I was here several months ago and recall the same problem. I enjoyed the rice dessert. The saag paneer--spiced spinach with cubes of paneer cheese--was good but the cubes of cheese were elusive. Be sure to stir up from the bottom! Next time I'm going to ask for a few cubes on the side. The chicken tika masala was excellent. Spicy sauce with chunks of white meat. Same for the beef meatballs. They were tender with plenty of tasty sauce that went well on the basmati rice. Finished off with mango pudding--not great. Had an artificial flavor. The rice pudding was much better. The traditional Indian decor is nice, as usual for this long-standing restaurant. This review is specifically for Star of India's buffet, which is an incredible value at $18 with a delicious and wide variety of curries, salads, dishes, soups, and desserts. The food is legitimately good Indian food with really rich flavors and thick curries. They have some of the most popular dishes like chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, samosas, and to my surprise lamb meatballs and goat curry. It's great to be able to have all of these rather than have to pick one dish and they change it up. For an Indian buffet, I feel this really as good as you can get. Replacing my previous 5-star review with 3-star, because of tip inflation. The standard tip for buffet service is 10%, but the default on the payment terminal is 15%. Also, while the host says that there are vegan items on the buffet, absolutely nothing on the buffet is actually marked as such. My previous review: ---------------------------------- After just walking through the door, something about the ambience made me feel like I was back in India. We went for the buffet. The staff pointed out the vegan items for us, and explained that the roti wasn't (which is unusual, because roti is usually made without butter, unlike naan), but he actually had the kitchen make us some butter-free roti and brought it to us.
