I sure didn't enjoy my last visit here. We arrived there at 5:30 with a reservation for a group of 11. We let them know we all had tickets to the opera at 7:30 so it was our goal to be wrapping up by 6:45. By 6:35, my plate was still bare. By the time my food arrived, I had to just shovel it in and go to the opera with indigestion. My friend sitting beside me fared even worse. His food didn't arrive until we were all paying our bills and getting ready to depart so he just had to get his to go. There were nice aspects of the meal too. My food was hot and tasty, my Welcome To The Jungle drink was epic, and our server was pretty attentive. Supposed to have gotten rice with our meal. Rice was not brought until almost everything was eaten and this is after we had to remind them. 3. The card that ended up paying was double charged. Had to call to try and get it fixed and the person on the other end was incredibly non chalant and treated it like it wasn't an issue. $135 charged twice is most certainly an issue. Came in to grab a quick bite to eat this afternoon and when I got here after walking 15 minutes down the street sweating from the heat, I was informed that they were closing early due to a party. The restaurant was nice with light coming in through the front windows. I liked the mahjong tile wall. We both started with a cocktail. I ordered the Conblucius and she ordered the Tequila Mockingbird. Both drinks were good but I think I liked hers better even though I don't normally like tequila. We ordered vegetarian eggrolls, pork soup dumplings, the dry fried green beans and the Two-Faced Crispy Noodles with chicken and beef. The green beans were definitely my favorite. The egg rolls are rolled thin so it's hard to taste the veggies, but you did get some flavor. The soup dumplings hold their own but there are better options in Austin. I was divided on the noodles. We dined here for Valentine's Day. It is a Szechuan style Chinese restaraunt with a high end spin that caters towards a more Westernized crowd. The drinks taste nice but the prices are pretty outrageous. We had the Tequila Mockingbird ($24) and My-Tie ($17). Food: Recommend: The dumplings are amazing and taste super fresh. We tried the pork soup dumplings ($14) and beef pot stickers ($14). Singapore Noodles ($23) - choc full of 3 types of protein (chicken, shrimp, and char siu). Super flavorful and delicious! Green Beans ($16) - yummy, garlicky, lightly fried. Neutral: Chicken and Taro Eggrolls ($8) did not taste like much but were nice and crispy. Not good: The Hunan beef ($23) was too spicy. I have a pretty high spice tolerance, and to me the level of spice detracted heavily from the dish. To my boyfriend who does not have a high spice tolerance, it was inedible. So I think this is more of a 3.5 but ultimately rounded down cause to me, food and taste beats service. This is a more upscale Canto dimsum spot and walking in, I was probably the only person of Asian descent. That usually is a telling sign for food quality at an Asian establishment. Service was nice, staff was friendly and apologetic as we got there a little later in the day ~1PM and were out of a lot of food and drinks. Being a dimsum spot, we were able to try quite a few of their dishes. My favorite were the dry fried local green beans and the fried turnip cake. The green beans were super flavorful and I found them to be very reminiscent of what I grew up eating. The turnip cake was a fun twist where it was lightly battered and deep fried so the crisp was evenly distributed as opposed to the traditional way of just pan frying 2 sides. The other dishes were either not memorable or problematic to me. The dumplings had a very thick, tough skin and weren't even closed properly. The beef bao was very bland and dry to me. At the price point of these dishes, I was expecting more but they do wrap it in a nice aesthetic and make it more approachable for a more Western, upscale audience. We have come for their Sunday dim sum brunch for years (sprinkled with a few dinners here and there) but after moving north a few years ago, we only managed to hit it up every year or so. Wu Chow opened the North location and we gave it a try a few times but were severely disappointed! The north location didn't feature the famous Chrysanthemum mimosas (IYKYK), didn't quite execute properly on some of the most popular choices (dude, the foil chicken is something we call dream about) and just didn't have the great service we were used to. Well color us happy when we decided to grab a May the Fourth brunchtime with some friends and our teenage kiddos yesterday. Glorious. Amazing service from the get go, delicious Chrysanthemum mimosas, and all our most favorite dishes over and over again. Soup dumplings! Foil Chicken! All the Shumai! Scallion Pancakes! Tangerine Beef! Basil Chicken Dumplings! Pineapple Bao shaped like tiny turtles! Even a special Star Wars tiki drink served in Jawa or Boba Fett tiki cups. Just tremendous. But beyond the fabulous food and drinks was the amazing team service that kept our drinks full, our tummies singing with deliciousness and our small needs like a dropped spoon, extra chili crisp or napkins constantly attended to. I love Chinese / Asian food but my husband is gluten sensitive. Chinese / Asian restaurants are usually not accommodating gluten sensitive eaters. It gets tiring asking waiters/waitresses: which dishes are gluten free, they say they are not sure, let us check with the kitchen, and they get back minutes later usually telling us, very little dishes are gluten free. Wu Chow totally accommodates gluten sensitive eaters . I love going here. I don't have to worry about ordering special dishes for my husband. His favorite dish is the Cumin Lamb. Mine are the Fried Green Beans and the Salt and Pepper Squid. But really, I like all the ones we tried so far. We are sad when the Rosedale location was closed. But glad we still have the option to go to the downtown location. We'll be coming back! read more

I've heard great things about this restaurant and after so many recommendations from friends, my boyfriend and I finally decided to try it out on our Anniversary! The inside seating is cute and they have plenty of seating outside as well. We began with Spicy Wontons since our server let us know the dumplings would take closer to 20 minutes, and we were both too hungry to wait. The wontons were good, but nothing special. My boyfriend ordered a Kirin Beer and I ordered a Mexican Martini with extra olives. Unfortunately, the drinks did not arrive until after we got our main course. Although I was unhappy with the time it took for them to get to us, the Mexican Martini was delicious! For our main course we ordered the Chicken and Beef Noodles. The plate is bigger than it seems in pictures! It tasted alright, however, most of the sauce for the meat pooled at the bottom of the plate which left the meat less seasoned. Disappointing experience overall. I had been gifted a $100 gift card and chose to dine at Wu Chow because I've heard some good things. Definitely a mistake I'll learn from. Manager sat us at the table, (I'm assuming she was the manager because she was wearing a blazer and was on her laptop at the the whole time we were there) and gave us a very lukewarm "greeting." Server was underwhelming, no personality or charm or any warmth whatsoever. He seemed annoyed with us from the beginning, only replying with "Yup." Didn't offer any food recommendations. We told him we had limited time to dine, so you'd expect he'd check on us here and there, but he RARELY ever came to the table and took forever to get our order in. The most service we got was from the busser/food runner, who was actually cool but far from made up for the lackluster service we got from everyone else. And the crazy part is the manager (again, I'm assuming) served us diet coke that was extremely flat, and we had to send it back. They served us a plate of dumplings that we didn't even order, clarified that it was a mistake and were preparing our correct order, so that only added time onto the limited time we had. We ended up overstaying a whole 30 minutes and running late to our next meeting. At the end, after sitting for 5 minutes trying to make eye contact anyone from the staff we were growing so impatient that we actually had to GET UP from our table to find our server just to ask for the check. Wu Chow in Austin serves up some seriously delicious Chinese food with a modern twist. The service was great, everyone was friendly and attentive. It is family-style, which is how the menu is designed, but I was dining with teenagers and honestly... I wouldn't bring them again next time! They are too picky! The portions are definitely on the smaller side, especially when sharing with big appetites. We tried the foil wrapped chicken, chicken & ube egg rolls, chicken pan-fried siao pao, and mixed fried rice and in the pics you will see the other dishes we had as well. All were solid and flavorful. But the real standout for me was the honey pecan Gulf prawns, absolutely amazing! Sweet, crunchy, and perfectly cooked. I knew I would really like this place, and I got lucky to come for a work event where food was covered so we got to try a lot. I was not disappointed! Our server was so peppy, helpful, and friendly, and he gave us lots of recs. The dry green beans and whole roast duck were my favorites, but the dumplings were quite good too! We had a few sichuan style dishes which were sooo good but just beware they are decently salty/oily so they hit heavy once you've eaten quite a bit. The dessert menu is a bit limited but they had coconut ice cream which I actually LOVED, and a lemon sorbet that everyone else said was good. And I had a cocktail called the purple rain -- it was a purple drink with crème de violette in it, had a floral flavor and was sweet but not too sweet which is right up my alley!! The thyme based cocktail was also super lovely, my friend got it and let me try it (had a more citrusy flavor but you def got thyme flavor). TLDR: bugs crawling on booth as we were eating, hostile staff One of my favorite restaurants in Austin at one point, totally ruined. This restaurant has gone downhill in more ways then one and I would recommend dining elsewhere. When a member of our party asked which beef was GF/which was non-GF, the response was curt as though we should have known. Usually I would add pepper to this when I order it elsewhere but the way it's prepared was perfect and I didn't need to add any more to it. - Shanghai Pork Soup Dumpling (5/5) - there's only 5 dumplings in this order. Dumplings were super flavorful and delicious. I only wished they gave an even amount of these per order. - Homestyle Tofu with Minced Pork (4.5/5) - this came with leeks and mushrooms as well. There were barely any minced pork in the dish but overall it wasn't bad. I enjoyed how the tofu tasted. - Dry Fried Local Green Beans (4/5) - I absolutely love green beans, especially at Chinese restaurants. Two different servers asked if I had any allergies or dietary restrictions before ordering - impressive! I ordered the seafood bird nest. Here, it's a taro root nest and it's served with a side of rice -- interesting! I also received a pair of metal tongs, which I used to break apart the nest for consumption. Tools were definitely required, as the nest was thicker and crunchier than I've previously experienced. Still very good! Flavors were pretty authentic. They have a killer Happy hour where you can sit at the bar. Food was really good. My only issue is that two of our dishes (Crispy Sesame Beef and Spicy Sichuan Deep Fried Chicken) were overcooked. Both were very tasty. My wife asked to have the beef refine, which they did so right away and it came back perfect. I regret not having asked for the Fried chicken to be redone because they were both very tasty. Dumplings were all very good, as were the spicy wontons. I kept sucking those down because they were smaller and so good (had some heat ... awesome). Don't let the size fool you, as they packed a punch. Service was fantastic. You don't get just one server, but a team of guys that kept coming by to ensure we were taken care of. Service is 5 stars for sure. So, the only reason I gave Wu Chow 4 stars out of 5 overall is because of the two overcooked dishes. I hate asking for redo's, regardless of how polite and attentive they are when you ask.
