The Sankalp is a restaurant group with ventures in hospitality, real estate, packaged foods, and more; and this particular location in Tech Ridge on the north side of the strip mall at I-35 and Center Ridge Dr is likely one of the many franchised locations; this one serves both veggie and meat dishes. They have a standard strip mall storefront; but the design inside is actually quite nice. The booths, while comfortable, can easily be moved when getting in or out of them. Each time I've gone to this restaurant, there has always been someone to greet patrons and help with pickups. I've both gotten takeout and dined in with them once each so far. Interestingly, I found my experience between the two slightly inconsistent. When ordering through their Toast Tab page online, most dishes offer four spice levels: mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy. The default level appears to be medium which I would recommend based, compared with spicy, given my testing so far; the difference as far as I can tell is that yes, spicy will be spicy, but the base flavor will change from something that is fragrant to something that tastes mostly of straight chili peppers (and not the fruity type of chilies); the chilies cover up the base flavors. However, when ordering inside the restaurant, they did not mention spice levels, so I'm not sure of what spice levels were utilized. For takeout, I've ordered the following and also noticed that estimated pickup time on their to-go orders are not very accurate; I arrived 20 minutes after the promised ready time, and I still had to wait about 10 minutes before the order was ready. They have a pretty comfortable sofa to sit on while waiting and writing Yelp review drafts. Kohzi Sukka (medium) -- the chicken was tender; the seasoning on it was decently flavorful; there were bits of coconut shavings I found, but overall it was not as flavorful as it could have been. Corn Methi Malai (medium) -- the corn flavor came through quite nicely, and I was able to taste most of the spices. Malai Kofta (spicy) -- the kofta was soft and fragrant; but the base flavor was covered by chili flavor, no doubt because I selected the spicy option. I'm really not a fan of the chili that they use, especially since it is not a fragrant type of chili. It is possible to obtain spicy food that does not cover up the base flavors; this particular preparation is not it. Chaas -- I enjoyed this drink. It is watery, yogurty, with spices, and it has a strong cumin flavor. For dine-in: Pav Bahji -- I suppose this came as "spicy" by default. The curry was mostly chili flavored, leading to the impression that this was a bland, tasteless curry (when eaten alone). In other words, the flavor had been cooked out of it, and only the chili flavor remained. However, when coupled with the toasted buns the combo yielded more enjoyable bites. Adding the onions and lime juice to the curry did not appreciable assist the bland base. I think the version I received was poorly executed. Cheese Dosa -- it should be noted that all their dosas come with potato masala (whether inside, on the side, or simply excluded). The provided chutneys were fine, though a bit on the lighter side. Chicken 65 -- I tasted mostly chili flavor; the underlying flavors which make chicken 65 iconic were quite muted. Also, the signature crispness was absent. There was a lack of tang in the flavor profile. This rendition was poorly executed. Overall, some common themes I noticed were that their spicy dishes are unbalanced and bland, since the non-fragrant chili flavor dominates. Their "medium" dishes have a decent amount of flavor, but the flavors are not as pronounced as they could be. I suspect if they utilize a different type of chilies, or if they increase the quantity of spices incorporated in their "spicy" dishes, they'll be able to correct for the current defects. read more

I'm really picky when it comes to Indian food and I've grown up eating Indian food my entire life. It is safe to say that this is one of the best restaurants I've eaten in Austin!!! I wish their tables were a bit bigger because it wasn't able to fit all the food we ordered but everything was so delicious. We ordered the butter chicken, it wasn't sweet like most restaurants tend to make it and it carried its spices well, the vadas were super fresh and light (i hate vadas but it was well made) their sambar was not watery and packed with flavor not just masala and spicyness that hinders the under layers of it, the pani puris were packed with flavor, and the paneer 65 was one of our favorites. The other was their Paneer Momos!! I've only had momos in India, but it brought those memories back. Honestly a 10/10 on every food item we ordered. For dessert, we ordered the kulfi falooda, which could've been less sweet. They added the roofsa syrup I believe which wasn't needed and personally I found it way too sweet. Nonetheless it was still enjoyable after adding some milk at home! I'd come back here again and again. Our server was super nice to us. She checked in on us and they even dragged out another table to add onto ours because we ordered so much! She repeated our order too. The inside is roomy but the music was throwing me off. THE BIG: Indian restaurant serving up giant dosas in the Tech Ridge area of Austin. Modern interior feel and plenty of parking in the lot outside. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with a friend and we got to work with eating. We first ordered the vaghar idli which is a steamy rice cake with curry spices. It was alright, I tasted more of the starch than the flavors itself. For our entrees, we got the veggie dosa which was gigantic. Probably 1.5 feet long. The curries we got were the paneer tikka masala and the butter chicken. Alongside that was the garlic naan. To be honest, the naan and dosa was alright. The entrees were great! Also in the middle of eating, the power went out, so we had to zelle our bill rather than using their POS system. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall damage done was around $74 for a bunch of food. Had heard a lot about this place specially from influencer's ! But I think the food was just decent / good hit or miss. We tried masala papad , Sizzler 65 , Kadhai paneer , soup . The soup and sizzler was good , curry was decent too ! But the lachha paratha was 1/10 . The menu is quite great and extensive . We went on a Monday evening and the restaurant was almost empty . We were a party of 4 adults and 1 toddler . The tables that sits 4 are quit small and get cramped leaving no place to keep water glasses as well ! Service was just ok ! 1 person on the floor and 1 server . Had to ask for all small things for the table like salt or vinegar etc for soup ! Service could had been better! I recently tried the South Thali, which included idli, dosa, and vada. The vada was decent, but the idli count was reduced to 4 instead of the 6 listed. The dosa, unfortunately, was overly crisp--more like a papad--and even after they courteously replaced it, it still wasn't enjoyable. What concerned me most was the hygiene -- the half-eaten curry was taken inside to reheat and then served back, which is not a safe practice. Tiny portions and high prices. The goat biriyani was dry as a bone and upset my stomach. There was an issue with communicating while ordering the food. I ordered a traditional masala dosa and the lady taking the call didn't know what dosas are available and then said they don't have it and offered the 3 barrel dosa which was dry and had at best 1 tablespoon of potato in two and the third was an empty shell with chili powder. Another mega indian restaurant chain with a location in Austin. The menu is huge; so the other review that says this is the Indian Cheescake factory is true on many accounts. I think it's still early days for this place and it hasn't gained the following as Sangman Chettinad has. So it wasn't that hard to snatch a table here during lunch time and I went with a bunch of co-workers so even a group of 10 was seated easily. Since i wanted something light for lunch went with a dosa. I got the three dosa special and got to try 3. All had pretty good fillings and they were pretty crunchy as expected. The dipping sauces were good; though could be more spicier. They even have the 3 foot dosa. They also have curries and other typical indian fair (a mixture of north and south dishes). The service was terrible. After we were seated it took forever without anyone coming back to check on us. After much failed attempts at catching someone's eyes I finally got hold of someone not responsible for table service to see if we can get our orders in (although we were tempted to leave already). Some time later our server sauntered over without apology and took our orders simply then left. After food came out and we finished, without anyone ever checking back with us if everything was okay or if we wanted anything else, again we sat waiting and waiting. Eventually I had to grab someone not responsible for our table again to ask about paying so we can leave. Then a little later our server slowly came over again and without a word held out the POS for us to pay. Nothing about sorry for delay, how's anything etc. If they can fix the service, I mean they don't even ne e to be that nice just come take order and take payment lol that would be great. Tried their south Indian menu and it was disappointing for sure. Not a fan of their cocktail, they def need to get better at it. Food was not very flavorful had some spicy-ness but not much else. Like there was no salt or seasoning other than gram masala. The chili momo was probably the only thing that was good. Ground chicken inside a pastry fried and than tossed in a sweet chili sauce. Dosa came out very dark had a burnt taste, it crumbled like chips when we try to rip the pieces. When I ask the waiter he said that how that one is made. But every other dosa coming out is a light brown color. We got the medium spice level which was not hot, both the goat and shrimp curry had the same flavor profile. It was my first visit to Sankalp Austin and I don't want to visit again this place, because of their food quality. Starting with soup, my wife ordered hot and sour soup, which she was not happy, even I tasted, it was not good. About starters, we ordered Chicken Malai Tikka. My expectation was some marinated chicken cooked in a tandoori oven with a coating of some malai, but what they served was some PLAIN BOILED CHICKEN, WITH NO TRACES OF ANY MALAI, served on a sizzler. As for main side dish, we ordered chicken tikka masala. Again my expectation was they will prep some gravy with some tandoor cooked chicken tikkas. But instead, again with PLAIN BOILED CHICKEN they made a gravy and served. (Minus the plain boiled chicken, the gravy was good) If people have this kind of attitude towards their customers and their orders, then it's a BIG NO for me. read more

Oh man, this place really needs to improve their service! We went around 8:30 PM on a Saturday. There were three of us, and we got a table easily. However, we waited about 15 minutes for someone to take our order, and the staff seemed confused about their responsibilities. Eventually, we had to call someone over, and a server came to our table reluctantly. We placed our order for the following: - Chicken 65 - Veg Sizzler - Awadhi Biryani - Chicken Fried Rice (To go) - 2 drinks We got our drinks after 15 minutes, which was fine considering the restaurant was busy. But we waited nearly 45 minutes for our food, and had to remind the staff multiple times for an update. They seemed very careless, repeatedly assuring us that our order would be ready in '5 minutes,' but it never arrived. Frustrated, we asked for the check for the two drinks we had received. Right then, the Awadhi Biryani finally arrived--still no sign of the appetizers. We ate the Biryani, which was just okay, and waited another 10 minutes for the appetizers. When we asked for an update again, one of the staff members pretended to check in the kitchen but completely avoided our table afterward. At this point, we were fed up and demanded the check for what we had received so far. The staff member didn't even apologize for the wait. Overall, it was a poor experience and a waste of time. This is by far the best Indian food we have had in Austin. We order Paneer butter masala, veg Handi, veg dum biryani and everything was excellent. My 2 yo had the biryani for the very first time and loved it. Everything was mild so the kiddos could also enjoy. I didn't like the filter coffee and could have been better. So far I have a good experience. We have ordred several different items from the menu. Most of the items were good in taste and their Dosa is as good as it used to be in their Mother ship in Ahmedabad. Taste of dosa and chutney same like ahmedabad.
