The food was excellent. We ordered Malabar Paratha and Chilli Garlic Naan alongside Malai Kofta. The breads were exceptional, and the Malai Kofta was delicious--I especially appreciated that it didn't contain artificial food coloring. The curry portion was good, though a slightly larger serving would have been welcome. What really stood out to me was the ambiance. The space is contemporary, clean, and thoughtfully designed. This is refreshing among Indian restaurants in Austin, where the food is often outstanding but the dining atmosphere can vary. In India, restaurants frequently combine excellent cuisine with sophisticated ambiance, and this place comes impressively close to capturing that same balance. The service was solid--our servers were friendly and attentive, and we appreciated the chef taking time to greet us at our table, which added a nice personal touch to the experience.

Located in Riata Trace Parkway, this unassuming Indian restaurant is serving some delicious regional Indian cuisine. Normally my husband and I love Sangam and Bay's Biriyani, but were feeling up to trying something different and try different Indian dishes outside of the typical tikka masala, dosa, etc that everyone knows. India is such a vast beautiful country with hundreds of different of states and we feel we haven't touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of cuisine. For appetizer we started with Pazham Pori Chaat, which consists of banana and fig fritters drizzled with chutney, covered in a payyoli mixture with spiced peanuts. I normally love samosa chaat, so wanted to try something similar to it and this was delicious. The fritters were nice and crispy without being too doughy/sweet and the mixture on top encompassed sweet/spicy/sour with a nice crispy crunch from the peanuts and payyoli mixture. It had just the right amount of spice though if you're sensitive to spice you might find it just a tad spicy. As I am a vegetarian (and thankful there were a lot of vegetarian choices for me), I asked recommendation from the chef who came up himself for a curry that I likely wouldn't be able to get at an Indian restaurant and he suggested Ennai Kathrikai, a non cream based curry. And oh man was it delicious! The curry was thick and rich even with no cream, a nice spice (to me not too spicy at all which shocked the chef haha), with silky soft eggplant. It came with a side of rice which is nice. I was so impressed - I normally love cream style curries and often find non cream curries lacking in flavor and spice but this one wasn't at all. My husband got the malavani mutton chukka which though descriptions says goat meat it's really lamb meat and he found it to be nice and tender and spicy - my husband can handle spice usually but with this dish he needed some yogurt haha. Parking is easy and free as it's in a strip mall. We came on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty but likely due to the restaurant being newer. We enjoyed getting to meet the chef and hearing his vision for the restaurant - he said for example in future going to do breakfast buffet with each buffet showcasing a different region of India (Kerala, etc). This restaurant would be great for large groups as there were plenty of big tables available and set up.

Pazham Pori Chaat Appetizer. Order it!

As an Indian person myself, I can confidently say the food here is very authentic and reminds me of the flavors my mom cooks with. It's also filled with Indian families and customers, which is always a good sign that the food is the real deal! On my visit, I ordered the egg curry and a dosa, and both were excellent. The egg curry was rich, flavorful, and perfectly spiced, while the dosa was fresh, crispy, and delicious. They also have a wide variety of vegetarian options, so there's something for everyone. The food tasted fresh, the portions were satisfying, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, this is one of the better places in Austin for authentic Indian food. If you're looking for tasty, freshly made dishes and a genuine Indian dining experience, I highly recommend checking it out.

Talked us out of getting the paratha because he said it's frozen. Super grateful to him. He helped us order for us and we got chicken and goat pulaos. The naans were very crispy and we weren't a fan of that. Everything was tasting good. We got a ton of Togo. This morning we heated the pulao and it already had gone bad. What a bummer! They have an overwhelming selection of biryanis with no description, so we consulted ChatGPT for advice. I did ask the server, but he didn't really explain any of the options and just recommended one. It would've been helpful for the menu to have just a little description of each type of biryani for those unfamiliar with it. I got the chicken dum biryani because it seemed like a simple, basic option. It was delicious. I asked for it less spicy, which just means they add more rice, and it was great for my wimpy tasty buds. My friend got the goat dum biryani. The portion was huge and great for two meals for me, while it was three meals for my slender friend. We also got the garlic naan, which was really cripsy and tasty. I prefer softer naan, but my friend loved the crisp. They gave us room temperature water, and I eventually asked if they had ice because my mouth was on fire. They brought me a small cup of ice. I think I really needed a whole pitcher of ice water to help temporarily cool my mouth (I know it doesn't actually help with the spice, but it feels like it does). The server was okay but didn't help us with explaining the dishes after we asked. We were also so confused if we were supposed to go up to pay at the counter or not, and we waited at least 15 minutes before finally going up there. The server instantly followed us and asked what we needed. Turns out they are supposed to come to your table when you pay.

There was one customer waiting, and not another person. I waited about ten minutes. My son loves chicken Tikka masala, so we ordered him some. It is spicy. I'm into a moderate spice, and this is burning my lips as I type. There was no option when ordering online to determine level of spice so we weren't ready for that. Beyond the spice the chicken was tough, so even if the spice was toned down the chicken wasn't great. The tandoori chicken is nice and flavorful and tender. $17 for three drumsticks and two thighs might be a bit steep. Overall not an overwhelmingly good experience.

I tried the Ulavacharu soup--absolutely delicious. It's main ingredient is horse gram, which apparently is in the legume family. It wasn't like any soup I've had before, so description is a bit tough. It was fairly spicy to start with, but less so as I kept eating it. The only things I could identify was ground up horse gram, some sweet onions, and some thinly shaved ginger, but it had a lot of complexity. Highly recommend that and the rose milk (especially if you need some relief from the spiciness when you start out.) I had a little bit of my friend's butter chicken sauce, and that was excellent too. More heavily tomato-based than I'm used to, but a lot of depth of flavor. I'd happily order that in the future. I can't wait to come back and try their buffet when my diet restrictions are over :) Service was great. I asked if a few of the menu items have coconut in them since I'm allergic, and our server double checked with the kitchen for me and was very nice about it. Really pretty dining room as well. One of the most memorable dishes we had was a special that our server highly recommended--and it was truly a showstopper. I wish I had gotten the exact name because I can't find it on their online menu, but visually and flavor-wise it was stunning. It came wrapped and cooked in a banana leaf, layered with rich, velvety saag, what tasted like thin dosa or chapati layers, egg, aromatic spices, tender chunks of meat, and curry, all melded together into this beautifully perfumed, steamy package. It was served with a cooling yogurt sauce and a chili sauce that balanced the heat perfectly. The presentation alone was gorgeous, and the flavors were deep, earthy, and incredibly comforting. We also ordered the curry goat, which was delicately spiced with a wonderful, slow-building heat. The meat was tender, the gravy rich without being heavy, and it paired perfectly with the simple white rice that let the complex spices shine. The tandoori goat chops were the family favorite by far. Everyone loved the smoky char and bold marinade. Personally, I found them a bit softer than I prefer, but the flavor was outstanding--robust, well-seasoned, and unmistakably tandoori. Finally, we ordered the Tandoori Pomfret to go, and I had it later with rice porridge. It was absolutely scrumptious. The fish was fragrant, beautifully spiced, and still juicy, making it the perfect comfort meal with the warm, soothing porridge. Overall, Subham Chettinad Grill delivers authentic, soulful Indian cooking with layers of spice, heat, and aroma that feel both traditional and thoughtfully prepared. If you're looking for real South Indian and Chettinad-style flavors in Austin, this place is a must-try.
