The experience I had here was terrible. One waitress was very obviously having a bad day and made no attempt to hide it. The other waitress brought us the wrong food twice. As for the meal itself, it was about as bad as the service. The Teriyaki Chicken was lacking flavor and filled with onions. The shrimp tempura and the california roll was okay. I love Star Sushi, especially lately. My favorite sushi roll includes seared tuna on top. Star Sushi actually sears the tuna, not take a butane torch to the outside like most if not all other places in the valley. I have even had 3-4" holes in the plastic to-go container (on the bottom) from Hiro and others that torch the sushi in the to-go box. It's happening more than you think. Star Sushi actually sears their meat with distinct sear lines. I'm sick of having every single other sushi place take a torch to their food. I have one at home and dislike using it. It tastes much better being seared. I loved Hiro, but the last 2 times I had sushi to-go with seared tuna a top, I had a MINIMUM of a 2" hole in the plastic on the bottom. read more

The sushi is arranged beautifully and the amount is perfect. They let you sit wherever you'd like and offer bottomless soda/water/tea. The food was good!! That's about the only thing good about this restraint. If I go again, I'll order it to go. My boyfriend and I sat at the sushi bar. There was a guy making sushi (very nice) and then a girl making sushi as well. The girl is the daughters owner which you could definitely tell. Then you have another girl who is taking your order (friendly) and another girl who makes sure the food is correct for customers and gets out to the tables. There is no one at the table to ring up. If you walk in with a Togo order they holler at you from across the room to ask if it's pick up or to find a seat. The owners daughter was shouting about changing the channel to a sport channel to watch a game. She was trying to figure out what chanel it was and where the remote was. She was SO loud. When she took her lunch she sat at the bar on the other end of us and was face timing with someone, while changing the channel to the game. Very annoying. When the guy making sushi made a roll wrong, the lady that checks the rolls was freaking out, very loudly that he needs to remake it. This is the roll that the owners daughter had for lunch. The owner stepped outside with one of the workers to take a smoke break. Overall, I felt like I was at someone else's house. It was extremely unprofessional. The daughter was very unprofessional. The environment is weird, there's no order. It's like chaos in here. The service is bad. I go to sushi restaurants all over the USA. The operations side of this restaurant are horrible. They need to have 1 designated server to take care of tables. When you order, you will often have 2-3 more ppl delivery food, and never at the same time. My wife got her meal 30 minutes before me, and my daughter got hers 20 minutes before me. If one server was involved less issues would arise. Here's the worst part, servers don't get their tips. If I tip my waiter, I expect it to go to my waiter, then he/she can tip the chef and others as he/she sees fit ‍. Why should the owner get part of the tip? This sickens me. "Real Crab" We ordered two sushi rolls that both said they had "real crab" in them. No, they did not. We told our server that the crab was imitation, she went back to talk to the chef in hushed tones and then came back and told us that the crab was real but mixed with mayonnaise. It was clearly imitation crab, we know the difference. My husband pulled some "crab" out and gave it to her and said "this is not real". She took it back again and then came out with the same story of "real crab". Also, the cold soba noodles sucked. The dipping sauce was horrible. To make a long story short, this place sucks. There are three other sushi restaurant options in Ashland all of which are leaps and bounds above Star Sushi in terms of quality and authenticity. I'm never getting sushi from here again. It's the closest to my house, so I used to order here because it was convenient. However, the last time I showed up it was about 30-45 mins before close... The server told me "Let me check and see if we're still serving"... I overheard their conversation and they were about deny me service, except one of their friends came in right behind me - so they decided to seat me. I came in 1/2 hr before close tonight and even tho their open sign was on and they were obviously open for another half hour... they told me they were closed. The sushi isn't even that great anyways; probably the worst in the valley. The service had normally been pretty good, but the management closing the restaurant way before the posted closing time is a deal breaker for me. I'll be making the extra drive to get food from Hiro Sushi from now on; much better sushi and I don't have to worry if I'll be denied service or not. read more

The food is excellent. Miso soup is the best Ive had in the Valley. However the waitress was unimpressive. I think she was new but when she refilled our drinks, she gave us the wrong ones back. She also mistook my order but I was satisfied with what came out any way. In addition she gave a customer the wrong take out order and she had to run out of the store to catch him. "Meh. I've experienced better" Sums up how I feel about this place. The restaurant itself is uncomfortable, it's too open without anything to block the noise. We stopped in for dinner around 6pm, it wasn't very busy but it quickly filled up. They had hardly any vegetarian dishes, which is a deal breaker for my boyfriend and often for myself. All amongst some of the best sushi I've ever had. Ingredients were fresh, presentation was beautiful, and the environment was clean and welcoming. The staff were hustling and very busy. They were pilot and professional, but not super friendly- I'm thinking because they were busy and looked to be short staffed. Ordered a few items from the menu. First timer. I ordered the deep fried tofu appetizer and udon noodles with vegetables. The udon noodles didn't come with any vegetables besides onions and cabbage. Very little seaweed (maybe 3 pieces) and 5 pieces of slivered carrots. Zero mushrooms and green onions like the menu states. The food was good but definitely not worth the price I paid for it all. Because of some dietary restrictions, I asked for my food to be made gluten-free, which they did a good job of. The only things the waitress told me that would be left off if an item was made gluten free would be tempura, soy sauce and eel sauce, but my dish came without two items that had not been mentioned. When asked about the items, the waitress was extremely impatient and condescending. I have been to sushi restaurants before and the fish eggs and sweet sauce were safe for me to eat, which is why I asked about them being missing from my dish. I didn't mind that they were left off to meet my dietary needs, I just didn't realize those things were not gluten free at this restaurant. When I let her know that's why I asked, she interrupted asking if there was anything else. The person I was with had some concerns with their dish as well and before the waitress left I said "excuse me, I was just wondering if you guys..." (asking if they had any gluten free soy sauce) at this point she started walking away. She came back to give my friend something, without acknowledging us, then went to check on the table next to us. As she was leaving the table next to us, I again spoke up saying "Excuse me, could I just..." she looked over her shoulder at me then continued walking. Nobody came to check on us after that, nor did they walk near enough for us to ask for refills on our water. I have never experienced such poor service. For a waitress to interrupt a customer while they're explaining their reason to check on something is just rude, let alone for them walk away twice as a customer is trying to talk to them. This is not the first time I've eating here, but it is likely the last time I'll do anything other than take out. read more
