I went to Starbase after going to FOUR other repair stores, including the Apple Store in Pasadena. Every one of them said my graphics card issue could only be replaced with a new logic board, costing $600 +. Starbase was my last ditch effort, and they were fantastic. They repaired the graphics card for $125 and now it's good as new, and it took them less than a day. Couldn't be happier. read more

We've gone to Starbase several times over the last decade. One particular sour experience led to this low rating that I think would have otherwise earned them some where in the 3-4 star range. My father, of blessed memory, purchased a used computer here when our old computer fried on a bad surge protector in those windstorms of 2011. Computer worked fine for a few months and then crapped out. Took it in to the shop where they were unable to find a receipt for the sale, and said they rarely offer warranties on used computers, even though I am quite sure I heard them offer my father one when he purchased the computer. The power on the hard drive had died. Admittedly, I blame myself for not taking apart the computer and checking, but find it absolutely ridiculous that they sold my parents a 2-year old computer with an 8-year old hard drive. Hard drives are not supposed to last that long, the technician at Starbase tells me. Seems to me like selling a lemon. I paid for the repair so my mom could have a computer again. Probably the last of our business (I know enough about computers and enough people who know more than I, to never need to come back and overpay for cruddy service). Been there a few times, I have a used computer from them that is working great, I brought it in for some updates and as I was talking to him asking some question on how to back-up picture and which is the best way, I get my bill and the son of a B* charged me for talking. I am giving them 5 stars although they could not solve my problem. I had managed to lose 19 files out of my email - my personal files I had set up to drag and drop emails. I had spent hours with Outlook and Charter trying to recover my files or at least understand what had happened. No recovery and no explanation because they had never experienced this with a client before. Upon a friend's recommendation, I took my computer to Starbase to see if they could recover anything. These were VERY important files to me. I was cordially greeted, explained my dilemma and left it with them. They seemed very professional and hopeful that they could resolve my problem. They called me several times with updates and questions. Three different people tried their best, but I had set the files up so that they could be deleted if I accidentally clicked here instead of there. And I clicked here. I lost them all, never to be seen again because they were not on my computer anywhere, or Outlook or Charter. When I picked up my computer, it was explained with MUCH patience what I had done. They had tried their best but it was not to be restored. They also found about 10 Trojan viruses and malware even though we have updated Norton. They cleaned my computer thoroughly. I applaud them for their patience with me because I was upset and desperately needed to know what they thought happened so it wouldn't happen again. They took me through all steps at least 3 times. Neither Outlook, Charter or Starbase had had a client that had lost so many email files that could not be recovered. I appreciate their honesty and how well they explained the results. They said I could call at any time with questions if I wasn't sure of what I was doing with files or any other questions I had. I couldn't had a better experience overall. Their prices were very fair and did not continue with any further costs without approval. They also took time to explain other steps to be taken to protect and preserve files to my husband as well as to me. I will definitely return to them if I ever have a problem again and recommend them to my friends. read more

My PC died. The Starbase Net Computer shop is nearby, so I took it there. The techs told me it needed a new power supply. My PC was equipped with 2 internal hard drives. The tech told me one was bad. Okay. So, I requested that they replace it with a new hard drive and max out all the memory slots. Okay. So, I was also told the PC hard drive would be re-formatted and Windows 7 Professional installed. Okay. Week later, I pick up my PC, pay the $300 odd bucks for the labor and parts. Get home. Weeks go by and I get curious b/c my PC just wasn't up to her old performance. I open the "box". What do I discover? Not 2 but one hard drive, and 2 of the 4 memory slots are empty. Busy with work, I didn't have time to go back and complain to Starbase. Gets worse. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10. During the installation process, Windows 10 install tells me that the Windows 7 Professional on my PC is not a "genuine" copy. To get out of that snafu, I had to buy Windows 7. $100 bucks, adios. Lessons: 1. Never do business with Starbase Net COmputers again. 2. Fix PC myself. 3. If I can't fix it, take it to a company like The Geek Guys where you get a bona fide warranty. 4. If you go into a store -- especially a PC repair shop -- and it's messy, turn around and walk out. read more

Kevin at Starbase is my hero!! Thank you for saving my computer! My husband and I have been coming to Starbase for all of our IT needs for 15 years. They have always been fair, honest and knowledgeable. My computer was recently corrupted and nothing I did worked. I do 95% of my work on this computer so I was desperate. I brought it in to Henry and Kevin and they assured me it could be fixed. It ended up being quite involved but Kevin kept me abreast of what was happening and got everything fully restored and updated. I bought a new external hard drive for a very reasonable cost which gives me a lot more room for my copious amounts of data! Yet another conundrum with a moral...Blue screen of death..Local South Pas. computer shop goes belly up, and their secondary shop is in Monrovia. Drive. Virus/Malware is the diagnosis, you pay for a "cleansing," You add memory, & a back up hard drive. You bring the computer home, things go well- for a while. (Good help is hard to find.) History repeats itself. Blue screen of death. Enter Starbase Net Computer. Virus/Malware is the diagnosis, and 4 capacitors are "leaking.?" Virtual memory issue is attributed to your hard drive, and you'd think that after spending $300.00, for a new hard drive having beaucoup memory, and another "cleansing," that would be the end of it. Nope. Same ol' same ol'. But you're busy, you don't use the computer often, months go by, and by the time you take it back- Starbase dude sez NEW hard drive probably has a virus, and/or it is defective. $80.00 more bucks, since he's a "nice guy," yet another "cleansing," and you're "on the road, again." Blue screen of death- again. But you're busy, months go by, (deja vu) you take it back. Starbase dude sez "probably a virus," he runs a "quick" diagnostic, it appears to be a virus. (déjà vu) He questions your browsing habits, you answer that you've used ITunes, & you've chatted with AT&T tech support to request a new Yahoo email password- because it's been so long since you've had to "log on" - you forgot your password, and where you wrote it down. There's been no browsing. He offers a solution, a quick diagnostic. A virus is the suspicion, & $45.00 / hour is the quote. 7 days pass, you drop by (cuz no one called you with status) you're told your computer had multiple infections" and previous NEW hard drive had to be replaced. You remind the Starbase dude that, previously, he had suspected,out loud, that the previously NEW hard drive might be defective. $220.00 later, 2nd "NEW" hard drive and "you're on the road again." The moral of the story- buy an Mac. read more

Again. Starbase excels: went in to see about a new motherboard/processor for an old server that had been shaking around out in the woodshed for 10 years. Turned out they had a nice server in the back room they sold me for only $100. I was so pleased. Next project: I'm going to have them retrofit a new UEFI motherboard into my main desktop computer so I can dual boot Win10 and Ubuntu (Linux) so I can begin to depart that insanely invasive Win10 environment without giving up 1Tb to 3Tb on each of my large hard drives... read more

Sorry, but after what I experienced at Starbase, I will never go there again. My laptop was acting up -- vibrating and making a loud noise. I took it in and, after inspecting it, they agreed with me that it was a bad fan. Knowing that replacing the fan is a relatively easy and inexpensive task, I asked them if they could replace the fan. The man behind the counter said that since it's an older laptop, its not really worth fixing because he would have to charge me $140.00 to replace the fan. Instead, he suggested (in fact, practically insisting) that I buy some old used laptop he had for sale in his shop for $199.00. I passed on his used laptop (condition unknown), took my laptop (which worked perfectly except for the bad fan) home and ordered a brand new replacement fan for $9.00. When I received it a few days later, installed it myself in less than 10 minutes. At Starbase, I guess their policy is that you must buy what they want to sell you or they will overcharge you for very basic repairs. They wanted to charge me $140.00 for a minor repair that any reputable computer shop would charge $25 to $35. Let this serve as a tip-off to a rip-off. read more

I won't judge these guys. I will leave it to you. Here is the story. I was doing a good deed for my friend in Germany who is a student and is in a pretty bad shape financially. I bought this Laptop off ebay. It is a clean laptop , not old but not top model. I cleaned it up and before I go to U.S. postal office to ship it out I noticed that it is missing 3 screws! I googled this guy in Pasadena where at the time I was there and read reviews here. I went there and kindly asked him to give me 3 small screws. He noticed that I am in rush and he said I charge $5!!! I wanted to argue that this could be a small favor. 3 screw worth nothing. I ended up paying because I needed to ship the laptop out today. I should have placed a review long ago.....I've been going to this shop for many years...there is NOTHING like having a good auto shop, lawyer, doctor and of course, computer tech/repair shop that know you by name.....Henry, the owner, is patient, kind, and knows his stuff....over the years my kids have dropped computers, spilled liquid, etc....I've had troubles w/my past laptops, .....and he and his staff are the most professional and knowledgeable guys out there. I read "Russell G."'s not so nice review....all I would say to anyone reading this ..is this....if once you got home and realized that something was wrong....DON'T DO ANOTHER THING to your computer, as "Russell G." did, take it back, with your receipt .....Henry is a man of integrity. Brought in my HP Elitebook laptop in for service. My computer has been slowing down and sometimes it would freeze and lock up. As soon as I walked in, I was talked to and asked how they can help. I explained the situation with my computer, how it would lock up and freeze. They immediately had an idea what the problem could be. I was told it could be a possible hard drive failure. I was given a quote for the part and labor that will be needed to fix my laptop. The tech Kevin informed me I should get my laptop back within 2 days. I was happy to finally get my laptop checked out. The very next day I get a call on my cell around 11am from Starbase saying they got my computer ready for pickup. I was truly amazed by the turn around time. When I go pick up my laptop, I was informed they managed to mirror my old hard drive to the new one, keeping all of my files and pictures! Henry at Starbase is not only very knowledgeable but is fair in his service and pricing. I bought a used computer (!) from him because the bill was being paid by a volunteer service organization. He sold me a very competent machine with all the programs I needed at a very, very reasonable price. Then, when I had a problem with MS Word in which I had screwed up the settings and couldn't fix them, I took it to Henry and he got me out of trouble in minutes. This he did totally without charge. Another satisfied customer. I had a unique computer problem with my LG Blu-ray writer combo I purchase from Starbase Net Computer. Bottom line is, It would read ok but when it came to writing it would only write to +- 30 - 50% and I would get an error. I explained that the error message did not occur every time I burned a disc so what I meant is that it was "SOMETIMEY" I took my computer in for Starbase Net Computer for analysis. Kevin (one of Starbase's Technician) for a virus that had attacked my internal LG Blu-ray writer. Kevin purged and cleaned my PC and I brought it back home. 2 -- 3 weeks later off and on the problem. i called Henry (owner) and told him I was very frustrated with my disc drive and he told me to bring it back it. My computer had no virus but when Starbase would test it, it worked fine. Though the LG Blu-ray was still under warranty (barely) Henry instructed David (Starbase Tech) to replaced it with no hassle. jAnd I mean "NO HASSLE"! The drive works perfectly now. Starbase computers are the best! I'am a retired LAFD firefighter and I never do this but they are the exception. They were in my fire station district and I went in on a fire inspection and was impressed by there knowleage of computers. I was tired of going to best buy for computer service and problems. I bought a used computer from Henry and have been buying all my computers for my family ever since. I have had small technical problems and I can just call on the phone and they give me direction and help. Never got that help at best buys they take 30 mins just for someone to pick up the phone and charge for every question. I have been going to Starbase for 9 years now and will never go to a best buys or any big computer store ever again. They always pick up the phone and are good honest people. They are very fair as prices go and a lot of times don't even charge me for small problems! read more
