Today was our first visit to this restaurant. I've been wanting to go for a long time because I had…read moreheard such good things about it. First of all I love that it is in a up and coming neighborhood of Winchester in a historic building that has been turned into something useful and not just torn down. The service was excellent! No issues there. Attentive and accommodating. The food was mostly good with a few issues. The homemade French fries with sea salt would have been so much better if they had been hot. I had the half chicken sandwich and cup of kale and white bean soup. It came with fries also. The half chicken sandwich turned out to be a chicken tender on a brioche slider bun. Good but a small serving. Fortunately I am a small eater. The soup was full of veggies but the broth was bland and flavorless. Not at all what I was expecting. I think there was supposed to be sausage but not one piece made it into my cup. But I could be wrong. Maybe I wanted there to be sausage in it! My husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich. It was a very generous serving of delicious fried chicken. It also came with the cold fries. I will definitely go again because I think this place could be great and I'm going to try it again and find out. The menu has lots of wonderful choices. They are only open Monday thru Friday for breakfast and lunch. There were lots of people having lunch there today on a rainy snowy day. Hopefully the management reads their reviews and will make improvements accordingly. I believe the restaurant is run by a nonprofit and I would love to see them thrive!

I ordered the Steam Engine Pot Pie. It was okay overall, but it had a noticeable lemony flavor, which is unusual for a pot pie and not a taste I personally enjoyed.

The menu tracks the meals served to patients (with some exceptions that are always available) and the portions and taste are healthy and satisfying. The staff eat here often, and it's really nice to have a place where they can put it all aside for a moment and just be normal humans. Drawbacks: it's a hospital cafeteria, and it's really clear that that's the case. Portion sizes are controlled by restaurant standards, but in their defense, it's actually a good amount that is what we're supposed to be taking in, so YMMV. Positives: the menu is nicely varied, and has stuff that appeals to everyone, as well as the special diet foods (heart-heathy, low carb, etc.) that are intended to treat various conditions. Vegetarian options are available, and are pretty good, even from a carnivore perspective. Kids will find the usual pizza/burger/hot dog/mac and cheese options and a pretty good selection of ice cream and fruit. Prices average around $8-10 a person (dinner is a bit more expensive, but still not out of reach). Overall, it's a quiet place to get a break away from whatever else is going on. If they had meal plans, I'd seriously consider eating here more often.

Wonderful pancakes, egg sandwich, and avocado toast. My eggs were a little past over-easy but it was the only thing that wasn't perfect (and the host offered to have them redone but I said it was fine). We got a blueberry cream cookie and a lemon bar as an appetizer because sometimes we're a little extra and they were SO GOOD! I love a good pastry case and theirs was top notch. There were plentiful refills on the coffee (nice and hearty brew). Our server was so attentive and nice that we tipped extra. Just an all-around surprisingly excellent experience here.

That tells me I've discovered something, since locals know the best places to go. I changed my plan from a soup and sandwich to a sandwich with a side based on my (outstanding) servers' recommendation. I selected the 'Monaco' but all the options looked good (and I love the names). Since it's a coffee shop I stayed for a cappuccino, which was served in an adorable tiny cup Great service. Not a fancy place but doesn't pretend or need to be.

In the 2010's, about a few times a year on average, I'd have work travel to Leesburg. I'd often be coming from my office at companies in Howard County or Halethorpe (Baltimore County), MD , so I almost took the less traffic northern route down I-70 to Frederick & down US 15 to avoid often times traffic somewhere on 495, avoiding toll on Dulles Toll Road & Green Way or slow of VA-7 all the way to Leesburg. The multiple times I was going down US 15, I was thinking it was a cute place, but left turn in and left turn out with sometimes a lot of traffic to make the left back onto US 15 wasn't worth it. And sometimes wouldn't be going back the same way as until 2017 lived in NoVA And even 2017-2020 Wheaton, MD, I'd still often tough it out take VA-7 to 495 and deal with nasty traffic to get back home. On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, I happened to have not eaten lunch, took US 15 back into MD, and decided to eat a late lunch here at Roots 657 on the southside of the small hamlet of Lucketts, VA. The outside of this place looks like a large barn. Inside the store, there's a gift shop like what you might see at Cracker Barrel, but less cramped and nicer. Ordering was at a counter with a chalk-written menu above. Staff was cordial. And the burger was big quite possibly the best burger I had in 2018 and a lot of fries too. Although work travel to Leesburg is highly unlikely these days, if I'm ever out there for work or other reason, I'd definitely want to revisit this gem.
