These subpar reviews must be from before they renovated this location because definitely think this is now one of the best Starbucks on the island. Ever since they renovated it, it's beautiful! Looks like a hotel lobby. One of the best places to study/read in my opinion. There's a variety of couch, bar, and table seating and there seems to always have open seats and never gets too crowded. They have floor to ceiling windows so it gets quite a bit of natural light. Not too loud and a few outlets around if you need them. Parking is also pretty easy since it's in the shopping center. The food and coffee is pretty similar to your average Starbucks, nothing new here. But for a study/read/hangout spot, I think this is probably one of the best places on the east side of the island now. read more

After doing a sunrise hike at Makapu'u stopped for celebratory coffee on the way home at this Starbucks location. Ordered two coffees and fruit and cheese box. The server was friendly and our coffees came out quickly. We chose to sit outside at the small metal tables. It was a little noisy outside because of the car wash close by. First visit since they renovated the Hawaii Kai Towne Center store. Nice modern casual look. I sat at the picture window counter where I could see the outdoor seating. Drinks are corporate coffee...consistent, decent beverages. I like a milkshake and frappuccinos are pretty good. They haven't been charging extra for alternative milks for a while now and their proprietary app is user friendly. Rewards are a nice marketing ploy...but it works. Service is good...as per usual at Starbucks locales...and the ambiance is improved. read more

I was here two weekends ago while they were having their free hot chocolate promotion. If you buy any grande drink they'll give you free short hot chocolate from 12pm-6pm on the weekends in December. I was into their Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai and was ordering it all the time the past two months. They told me that they were out of Chai and that I could get the Gingerbread Latte. I guess it would do, but it was nowhere as good as the Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai. The free hot chocolate was so watered down. It tasted like I was drinking chalky brown water. My first time here. The place is empty, but very clean. You're greeted as you enter the door. There are partitions like all other Starbucks. The floor is set up for social distancing. There's this sign, do not grab straws, stirring sticks behind partition. barista will give it to you. There are no signs at other Starbucks, but very wise in terms of sanitation. Everyone wears a mask as well as customers. Manager is young and sharp. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating which makes me feel comfortable in their establishment. Fed up. This location, compared to the other 2 in this area (Hawaii Kai Towne Center & Safeway) is the worst. For the past 2 years that I've been getting coffee here, it's been inconsistent. He used his Gold Card (which has a monetary value on it) before lunch and later, got a FREE refill after lunch! Before we left Hawaii Kai, he scored ANOTHER free refill! Whoa! Another example is the Rewards that build up after a certain amount of purchases. Randy had THREE rewards and he wanted help to use them before they expired. Sheryl and I were willing assistants! Sheryl and Randy ordered Matcha drinks and I got an Iced Coconut milk Mocha Macchiato with Crystal Ball sprinkles on the top! There were pretty purple, green, and blue sugar crystals... I was so happy! My beverage tasted great and it looked good! Next time, I'll get whipped cream between the drink and the colorful crystals so that they show up better for photos... haha! Stopped by to pick up a mobile order, ordered a Carmel macchiato, which I had better at other locations. Everyone appeared to be friendly expect for "Liz", I had a question and spoke with Liz, her attitude was just terrible, she rolls her eyes and says "YES??" And spoke incredibly fast with an attitude. We're not usually in the Hawai'i Kai neighborhood but on this day, we stopped in because we had just dropped off our visiting friends at the Koko Head Railway Trail and told them we'd wait for them nearby. Well, it started to rain so we were happy to find a warm dry place to sip and sit. When we entered, we noticed that there were plenty of seating options and how clean (well-maintained) this Starbucks was. Although a good number of tables were occupied, there was only one person ahead of me who was already placing her order with the cashier/barista and no one else followed me. As I stepped up to place my order, the barista greeted me with a great smile and cheerfully asked "What can I get for you today?" I ordered a Grande Macchiato with almond milk and a Grande Peppermint Mocha with almond milk, paid and went to take a seat nearby with my husband. Within a few minutes, our first order came up but unfortunately, I MAY have not specified that I wanted a Macchiato Latte because the beverage that came out was a Caramel Macchiato. I apologized since it may have been my ordering error but the barista nicely took the responsibility of saying she'd happily re-make the beverage as a Macchiato Latte and the erroneous order would just be trashed. Now, call it luck, but because there wasn't anyone else behind me, the barista had time to remake the Macchiato Latte just after she gave me my Peppermint Mocha. I would've hated to have held up a anyone else's order or a line of customers. Our coffee beverages were tasty, prepared well and warmed us as we sat in the café. This Starbucks has such a great team of baristas rocking out the work week. And they do it with flare! I love stepping foot in here before my 11-hour day to see the familiar, friendly faces: Dane, Trey, Didi, Jiji, Jim, and so many others. Baristas have a tough job. They need to work fast. They need to memorize every little nuance, abbreviation, allergy, and food item. Their job will directly affect the rest of their customer's work day in a good or bad way. And they ALWAYS have to sound chipper no matter how long their day is. I have a secret soft spot in my heart when people remember me by first name. Sure, it's written on my scrub so if one were to "cheat" and take a millisecond glance, I wouldn't hold it against them! But remembering what I like to order takes my affections to a whole 'nother level! How do they do it?? They see hundreds, if not thousands of faces every week and can remember my tall mocha and everything bagel like clockwork! Jiji impressed me yesterday when my unspoken order rolled right off her tongue like we were long lost sisters. I wanted to jump the counter and give her a BEAR HUG! Dane always has the best responses to my salutations. His above-and-beyond customer service attitude is most commendable and will enthusiastically bring my food order to me in the waiting area no matter how long the line is. High five Dane! Didi and I go way back when we worked together at Alan Wong's so we always have a few laughs to go around. I have nothing but love for this team. One word of advice would be to give ample time for pre-work coffee runs when there is a new barista manning the front. Sometimes, the line can get insanely long and it's best to just come back at a later time or give at least 7-10 minutes before you start your shift. Their food items are yummy. I usually order the steel-cut oatmeal with agave syrup, fresh blueberries, and fruit-n-nut medley. After giving up coffee for about 7 years (by choice), I visited my buddy in Long Beach and he and his family are hardcore coffee addicts. I did my best to handle the wonderful aroma when around them drinking coffee and did very well. But, on one day trip his sister kept on telling me how good this particular roast was and for me to take a sip. I politely declined but they egged me on by saying "It's only a sip." I took a sip and realized how wrong that move was... I do enjoy my coffee and will stop by Starbucks every so often. This past weekend after hiking Koko Head, I was supposed to meet a friend from out-of-town to try CrossFit but had about an hour to kill. So I called a friend who lives in Hawaii Kai to meet up for coffee here. It was my first time at this location and it was your typical Starbucks - - very upbeat and just LOVE the aroma as you walk in. The staff here were in great spirits and greeted us with smiles. It was a muggy morning so I opted for the iced coffee this time and was asked how many squirts of simple syrup I wanted. I didn't know how to answer this question so the staff explained for the venti size it's usually 6 squirts. I like my coffee on the bitter side so I requested for 2. The baristas behind the counter were cranking out the drinks quickly and it didn't take too long to get ours. My drink was great but I'm an extreme person as I like my food and drinks how it should be temperature-wise. I understand that if they put too much ice it'll be watered down so after drinking about 1/2 of my cup I went back up to ask for more ice. The only problem I noticed at this location - - the air conditioning was too high!!! My clothes were still soaking wet from my double Koko Head hike and I was freezing so we sat outside instead.
